Spring 2017 Updates Keeping our players safe!

This Spring will commence the first season of play by which all registered, affiliated and CORI approved adults will be required to have a Mass Youth Soccer Adult Credential. The primary purpose of the Adult Credential is for all parents of children to feel comfortable that all adults involved with their training, safety, well-being, coaching, etc. have been properly CORI checked and are in good standing (registered and affiliated, thus insured) by Mass Youth Soccer. Initially when arriving at the field the adult should have their credential worn around their neck. Then, in order not to hamper their activities (coaching, lining fields, running, etc.) they may, if necessary, store the credential with their personal belongings. If you will be coaching or volunteering in any capacity with your local soccer organization this Spring, please make sure you have your Adult credential with you at all times!

Realistic Expectations Tommy Geis

U

Assistant Technical Director

sually, around mid-March through the end of the spring season, parents, players and soccer providers are preparing for the busy camp season. Which camp should my child attend or whose camp is the best? These questions are never easy to answer. Some providers even offer individual training throughout the offseason. The difficulty is identifying what the family is hoping to achieve through these different programs. Are you looking for a program for your child’s team? Would you simply like some additional training for your child? For some families, it may be a way to occupy some free time. Whatever the reason, here are some thoughts to consider when choosing a program.

the rest of their team. By giving players time to develop outside of the group, they improve as individuals which ultimately improve the team. Even though it is a team camp, some programs focus so much on the team that the individual is neglected. Make sure any team camp can provide you with a curriculum which develops both the team and your child as an individual player. Sometimes, attending a camp without your team or with a small group of friends is a better opportunity for individual growth. Even though kids are not always at ease being out of their “comfort zone”, they tend to adapt pretty quickly and make new friends in the process. Equally important, they can

Camps do not develop elite players!

F

irst and foremost, whether you chose a camp or individual training, neither is designed to make your child an elite player. Additional training is meant to compliment training which is already provided through your town or club program. To get the most out of a program, the program must be able to provide continuous technical challenges and the opportunity for the players to make soccer decisions. Camps can provide this however, individual training cannot. Individual training is meant to help a player improve upon a specific technique through repetition and shouldn’t last for more than 20-30 minutes per session over 6-10 sessions. If it goes beyond that, it turns into your primary training instead of supplemental training. If your child would like to attend a summer program with his/her team, this too has benefits as well as restraints. Team programs can be a great way for players to spend time together and build bonds for the upcoming season. The training can be concentrated on a specific area of improvement for the team and allows the team time to address it without outside interference. Players find out more about what their teammates like to do off the field, their habits (both good and bad) and what their teammates’ game tendencies may be. It is a controlled training environment for the length of the camp. On the flip side, players need time to escape the team environment so they can grow as an individual. Players tend to know where they rank amongst

try new challenges in training and in games which allows for their freedom of expression. If they are one of the better players on their town or club team, they can encounter new players who can provide a higher test of their abilities. If a player is not as strong of a player, a different environment may be what is needed to allow freedom to experiment in a non-threating setting. If the player’s goal is just to have something to occupy time during the summer months, usually you can find a program which provides for this too. Players do not have to be elite to enjoy a program in the summer. Some kids just like the idea of going to a field and playing soccer. Camps and/or training can be the pastime which meets this need. As in all programs though, you can only get out what you are willing to put in and not all programs are designed to cater to this type of player. If you know of a player(s) who has signed up for a program who is more focused on training than your child is, one of the two families will be disappointed with the results.

for Summer Camp Looking at the camp’s website should help to place your child in the best program for their needs.

Always remember the memories you had growing up. Hopefully they are more diverse than only on the pitch. These are impartial thoughts for you to consider. As we progress through the soccer year, please share your experiences with MA Youth Soccer on our facebook, twitter or Instagram sites! Have a safe and enjoyable season and please check out our Coach Education webpage for session plans, coaching blogs and a whole host of coaching material from our partners! TG

Rest and Recovery

ummer should be a time of rest and recovery. Enjoy the things that kids like to do. Go to the beach, play with friends, vacation with your family or just relax under a tree. Enjoy the times in life when you do not have to do anything or be anywhere. All the research would suggest that young athletes need this time to help their bodies grow, heal and rejuvenate their desire to play. Even when players say they can’t get enough soccer, I have yet to meet a player, who after an extended break, did not come back with a new zest for game. When making your plans for the soccer year, remember to include time away from the game. If a camp or some extra training is a part of the plan, try to limit the number of programs your child attends. Ultimately, each family has to do what is best for their children.
