Welcome to ALL members of the Youth Soccer Community! Bob Trudeau, President Massachusetts Youth Soccer Welcome to Mass Youth Soccer’s 2018 Workshop Weekend! Starting Friday evening with the Annual Awards Appreciation Night, Saturday’s Soccer Workshop and Sunday’s inaugural Breaking Barriers Workshop for Urban and Underserved Soccer Communities, the weekend offers a wide variety of activities for our youth soccer community. The Appreciation Night for our Annual Award Winners on Friday, January 26th is a wonderful opportunity for our community to honor and celebrate the efforts and commitment of numerous individuals to our sport. The annual awards recognizes those who stand out in their youth soccer programs, in their clubs and their communities for their selfless dedication to the game and to our children who play it. Every aspect of our great sport is recognized: the Young Female and Young Male Referees of the Year, the GOALS Program Coaches of the Year, the TOPSoccer Coach of the Year, the TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year, the Volunteer of the Year, the Administrator of the Year, the Girls and Boys Recreational Coaches of the Year, the Girls and Boys Competitive Coaches of the Year, along with recognizing our Male and Female Student-Athlete Scholarship recipients. We will also recognize the 2017 Olympic Development Program Regional Pool Players. Finally, we will conduct a posthumous induction into the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. All of us at Mass Youth Soccer appreciate our members’ attendance and recognition of our 2017 honorees. The Saturday, January 27th Soccer Workshop provides a wide variety of informational and educational opportunities for coaches, administrators and parents. Our staff has gathered an impressive list of speakers, presenters and instructors to assist our membership in advancing their soccer skills and knowledge.

Sunday, January 28th inaugural Breaking Barriers Workshop for Urban and Underserved Soccer Communities reflects Mass Youth Soccer’s focus on assisting inner-city soccer programs to grow and flourish. Our Association’s commitment to this initiative is unwavering as we seek to improve the youth soccer environment throughout our state. None of these activities would be possible without the support of our corporate partners and sponsors, who are an integral part of Mass Youth Soccer community. Without their sponsorship, our programs would not be as effective and respected as they are today. Our thanks to the following corporate partners: Boston Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine, Coca-Cola, TD Bank, Ron Bouchard Auto Stores, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. A very special Thank You for the host of our events, Boston Marriott Hotel - Newton. Please enjoy yourselves this weekend as we celebrate the special people amongst us and connect as enthusiastic youth soccer advocates to learn, share ideas and improve the soccer environment in our Association. It is our hope you return home from this weekend with fond memories and renewed energy for our soccer community. Sincerely, Bob Trudeau, President

Appreciation Night Speakers Becky Burleigh - What Drives Winning Few college coaches can match Becky Burleigh’s ability to bring a team ready to challenge for each season’s conference and national titles on such a consistent basis. There is no question that Burleigh stunned the soccer community when the Florida program she started in 1995 claimed the 1998 NCAA crown in just its fourth season of play. In 22 seasons at the helm of the UF soccer team, Burleigh, has led UF to a NCAA Championship, two NCAA College Cup appearances, 14 Southeastern Conference titles and 20 NCAA Championships berths. Her career winning percentage of 77.2 (472-126-38) ranks No. 4 among the NCAA Division I Active Coaches. In 2015, Becky Burleigh (Alongside Brett Ledbetter) co-created a conference to start a conversation with championship coaches on What Drives Winning. It has evolved to become a movement that transcends sports and has created a community of coaches who want to increase awareness beyond the X’s and O’s.

Skye Eddy Bruce - Soccer Parenting Skye is the founder of the Soccer Parenting Association (SoccerParenting.com), with a mission of elevating the game by engaging, educating, supporting and advocating for youth soccer parents. Skye is a sought after speaker for parents, coaches, clubs and players. A former professional player, Skye was a collegiate and youth All-American goalkeeper, Defensive MVP of the Final Four (1993) and State Champion track athlete. Mass Youth Soccer Annual Awards Every year Massachusetts Youth Soccer accepts nominations for awards to recognize people who give their time and energy to make youth soccer better. Each year, the recipients of the awards are chosen by a committee from Massachusetts Youth Soccer. We thank you for joining us at the Mass Youth Soccer Appreciation Night as we honor these incredible individuals and congratulate them on their achievements as Coaches, Volunteers, Referees and Administrators!

Hall of Fame - Skip Gorman Skip Gorman spent 25 years of his life devoted to the beautiful game of soccer and lived “For The Good of The Game” by serving the youth of Holbrook, South Shore Soccer League and Mass Youth Soccer. He served as President and VP of Mass YouthSoccer; President and Referee Assignor for SSSL; President for HAYSA. He also coached HAYSA for 25 years. Skip lived the principles of fair play, sportsmanship and respect, and he expected the same from his players and their parents. Skip Gorman served right up until his passing in 2010, after a 7 year battle with cancer. His work and service to youth soccer impacted tens of thousands of players. His headstone reads “For The Good of The Game”.

Dana-Farber Kick It Forward Award Mark Augustyniak / Brian Abruzi - Tewksbury Kick for Dana-Farber gives soccer players the opportunity to raise vital funds for cancer care and research at DanaFarber Cancer Institute, while learning the importance of philanthropy and volunteerism. Massachusetts Youth Soccer is delighted to honor Mark Augustyniak, Brian Abruzi and members of the Tewksbury Redmen as we recognize their efforts in raising thousands of dollars for the Dana Farber Kick it forward campaign.

US Youth Soccer National Award Winner Volunteer of the Year - Kevin Brothers

As the President and a coach of Woburn Youth Soccer, Brothers wants every child to have the opportunity to play, and he motivates countless other volunteers to help make it happen. In addition to spreading awareness and growing the WYS program, Brothers is involved with various logistical tasks, including managing registration, clinics, coaches, uniforms, field maintenance, schedules, concessions and volunteers. His promotion of fundraisers, food drives, high school car washes and many other events shows his involvement and commitment to the community. Brothers has dedicated a significant amount of time to building youth soccer in the Woburn area, all because of his passion for the game.

US Youth Soccer National Award Winner TOPSoccer Coach of the Year - Caryn Goulet

As a former player who married a former player and was lucky enough to have two children who are successful in their different paths of the game, Caryn has found many ways to keep soccer part of her life: adult league play, coaching, officiating, and becoming an administrator on town, league and state boards. Caryn has also spent 30+ years in the company of special needs children and adults finally combining the two avocations more than 15 years ago by joining the TOPSoccer community in Wilmington, MA. Caryn helped the program become the largest town-based program in the nation, and in 2012 applied for and received a grant from the Cummings Foundation to take the program to new levels. She founded BeyondTOPS, a non-profit organization modeled after TOPSoccer and serving 125+ children with special needs from 22+ surrounding communities. Today, BeyondTOPS and TOPSoccer are synonymous in Caryn’s area and provide sport-specific sessions every Saturday during nine months of the year. As part of her role with Mass Youth Soccer, Caryn looks for 2018 to be a year of reconnection and unification – quite literally. It is Caryn’s hope to establish the first state-wide Unified TOPSoccer league in the nation by collaborating with other programs across the state. If you or someone you know wants to join the effort, contact Caryn via phone at 617-501-3959 or via email at tops@ mayouthsoccer.org.
