Founded in 1791, the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) is the first organization in the United States devoted to collecting and sharing materials and resources that foster historical knowledge.
Today, we promote historical understanding through our collections, exhibitions, and programs. Our extensive collection tells the story of America through more than 14 million documents, artifacts, and national treasures. From the letters of John and Abigail Adams, diaries written during the Civil War, and firstperson accounts of daily life during COVID19 to photographs, works of art, and historical artifacts, we collect materials from all segments of the population and all time periods.
Our vision is a world where historical understanding is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy.
At the MHS, we welcome everyone to draw upon our collections to encourage a richer appreciation of our past. We use our resources to educate, connect, and inspire in order to build historical empathy, foster civic responsibility, and generate an awareness of and respect for our shared humanity.
Members and the MHS Fund make it possible for us to fulfill our mission and expand access to historical knowledge. Thanks to our Members, we
• Offer free admission to our research library and exhibitions
• Provide history and civics education resources to students and teachers
• Serve as the Massachusetts sponsor of National History Day for students in grades 6–12
• Digitize collection items for increased accessibility
• Support leading historical research through fellowships and publications
• Offer unique and engaging public programs and events
• Share fascinating and inspiring stories from our collection on our podcast, The Object of History
