The project is situated in Poblenou, part of the first suburban belt of the city. The area has experienced many changes over the last three centuries, having developed from an area almost exclusively industrial to a mix of residences, services and few surviving industries. The project investigated a big void of this part of the city that hadn’t been filled since the first urbanization of the area and disclosed the different layers, which were the result of three hundred years of history and which were still recognisable, contrasting the perpendicular grid of Plan Cerdà and the irregular grid of the existing road network. Following the principle of an operating use of history, we interpreted and reinvented these signs. The strategy developed in two directions: we safeguarded the void, giving it meaning and mending the disjoint urban fabric; besides we preserved the existing structures, the urban order (or, better, DISorder) and the buildings (in the area there are two disused factories of the nineteenth century). Once we had detected the lack of services of the district, we consequently decided to build a market and an art school while a quite wide part of the lot was assigned to urban gardens, in order to boost and develop the sense of community. We also thought about a progressive process of construction of the entire complex, that was related to the growth of the social awareness among the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

THE MARKET The market is specialized on food products, fruits and vegetables in particular, and it is placed in an existing factory. The ground floor of the existing structure is renovated and transformed in a covered market with bars / restaurants, shops and stands while a pedestrian street, that occupies the middle nave, distributes people to the spaces. The existing building also houses craft workshops of food and items sold directly below, offices and a multipurpose space. The market consists also of an entirely new covered part of three floors: the first one, placed under the ground level, is used as an underground car park; the second one, the ground floor, is occupied by stands, arranged in such a way as to suggest the idea of an overcrowded maze, the archetypal image of the market; a mezzanine holds a small exhibition space; the last floor, the roof level, houses the open-air theater, the new meeting place for the community.

Master thesis | 9 RE USE OF THE EXSTING BUILDING The nineteenth-century factory in this area is an integral part of the project. The external image remains the same but the interiors are converted into new functions: market and craft workshops.
AN ARTIFICIAL LANDSCAPE The sloping roofs, the opportunity to travel the same and the choice of the green roof transform the building into an artificial landscape raised above the ground. In this case the flap provides the right angle in order to create a large slide.
SINUOUS PATHS The sinuous paths lead the user to discover different situations: introduce him to the new commercial space, the factory complex or through cultivated gardens.
SOLAR ENERGY The energy produced through the huge photovoltaic system on the roof makes the market almost energy self-sufficient.
NEW SPACES FOR THE COLLECTIVITY The residents of the neighborhood can use the small exhibition space and the huge open air theather above the market
URBAN GARDENS Much of the ground available is used for urban gardens. The plots can be cultivated both by the residents of the neighborhood and by the owners of the stalls in the market, so they can sell what they have produced there, fostering a type of responsible consumption.

The MACBA is the contemporary art museum of Barcelona, ​​designed by the architect Richard Meier. In front of the headquarters of the museum we can find a nineteenth-century church, without any architectural value which is nowadays desecrated. The objective of this project is the rehabilitation and the adaptation of this empty building as a new exhibition space for the MACBA. As for the functional program, the new museum areas, equipped with an independent entrance, is held in the high and narrow space of the old church (with the construction of new floors at different heights), while the new administrative offices are placed in a new structure, that wraps the existing facade. The store of the new exhibition spaces, connected to the MACBA warehouse through an underground corridor, is dug under the walls of the existing church, supported by a new steel structure. The formal idea that characterizes the entire project is the concept of wrapping the old structure with a thin layer of white perforated aluminum panels, which reproduces the curved shapes of the object a reaction poetique, designed by Meier for his museum.

A new residential neighborhood, aimed at saturating one of the last urban voids of Venice: this is the topic of this workshop. The new buildings rise in an area between the big church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the ensemble of the city hospital, which was once occupied by the gardens of a nowadays disused elderly residence. The project includes about seventy new flats for young couples and a residence for students, as well as a new public square, the new central core of the entire complex. While it maintains a distinctly modern image and a rigorous and unified urban structure, the new intervention tries to harmoniously insert itself in the existing urban fabric, through the creation of new public spaces that evoke traditional elements of the city: il campo, la calle. The complex is divided into two main rows of block of flats, mutually orthogonal, plus two small other blocks, partly independent. The ground floor of the rows is occupied by shops and a kindergarten while the three upper floors hold exclusively flats. All the residences have the entrance that overlooks a ballatoio, that could be compared to a raised public road. The student residence is an independent unit structured with a central community space and vertical connections while the flats are arranged on the sides.

The project focuses on the renovation of two buildings that have finished their life cycle. The towers are situated near the Porta Garibaldi railway station in Milan, above an artificial platform raised from the street level; built at the end of the eighties, the towers once housed the offices of the National Railways A project of architectural and energetic improvement for the towers already exists and it consists in a functional adaptation of the interior spaces, a structural reinforcement and a total renovation of the external image of the building. As consequence of the refurbishment, we even propose to change the original function of the building, from offices to residences, integrating original architectural-distributive solutions with new structural and technological solutions. The leading idea of the project for the internal distribution consists in the effort to eliminate the usual repetition of the same floor for all the extension of the tower, as it happens in almost all the tall buildings. We propose different combinations of various typologies of apartments for every level of the building and common areas developed in more than one floor, lit by natural rather than artificial light. The towers are divided into macro-groups of 4 floors of flats and one floor for the community spaces (restaurant, kindergarten, study rooms and library, senior centre, gym), each of them equipped with a winter garden and a terrace.
