Shalom, Chaverim (Hello, Friends), As President of CRJ, I want to welcome you to the Fall 2018 CRJ Program Guide, your guide to all of the exciting programming, events, and activities planned for August through December of 2018! Thank you to Nikki Mastando, Lauren Oback and Julie Begani for working so hard to create this helpful guide. MARK E. LEVITT It really shows how we are Orlando’s most CRJ BOARD PRESIDENT diverse and exciting Jewish congregation. Whether you are new to CRJ or have been a member for decades, this program guide will show you the many ways to get involved. Many programs in this guide relate to youth groups and youth programming. Today, our middle school and high school youth groups, Jr. GORFTY and GORFTY, are vibrant and flourishing, with more than 60 active participants. There are five youth groups in place for children and teens, Pre-K through 12th grade; these opportunities have become a huge part of our kids’ social lives. Our staff continues to create new and innovative outlets for engagement, enthusiasm and connections, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of the strong foundation created by Youth Engagement Director Lauren Oback, a foundation upon which CRJ’s youth involvement will surely grow through the years ahead. CRJ has expanded the Kids Kehillah (Kids Community) programming, offering monthly Tot Shabbats and various early Jewish learning educational experiences for ages newborn to 4 beginning this fall. Kaitlyn Dunn is joining CRJ as our Kids Kehillah Coordinator. Kaitlyn is a great asset and is excited to bring her experience with education, Judaism and theatre to CRJ. As programming at CRJ continues to grow, we have made enhancements to our staff at CRJ. Blaine Smith, who has spent the last two years working as one of our youth advisors, will be taking on the role of Youth Director. Blaine has proven himself to be a great asset to our youth program and is ready to take on increased responsibility. Lauren Oback will continue to oversee, advise and have an active role in the planning and implementation of our youth engagement program. As important as our youth programs are, we strive to promote programs for all ages and all interests. Take the time to look through this program guide to see what programs may interest you. There is surely something for everyone.
CRJ is YOUR connection to your faith, family and friends. Let’s ALL get involved. B’ahava (with love), Mark

Life Cycle Events at CRJ When our Clergy are there with you during a lifecycle event you will receive a personal touch and a meaningful moment for you and your family. They will be there for you before, during and after the life cycle event. Each baby naming or wedding is personalized and brings in the whole family. Every funeral or unveiling reflects the beauty and comfort that comes from our Jewish tradition. Being part of a congregational family means celebrations are elevated and difficult times are made more bearable. These life cycle events are all included with your membership.
Baby Namings
Congregants are welcome to present their child of any age before the Congregation at a Friday night service for a formal public naming ceremony. We personalize each ceremony, as every individual is unique and special. Parents are welcome to consult with Rabbi Engel on the selection of an appropriate Hebrew name for a child whenever this information is required, either pending a birth or any time thereafter. All CRJ members receive this service as part of their membership.
Weddings & Anniversaries
Members of the Congregation may invite Rabbi Engel or Cantor Jacki to officiate (or co-officiate) at their Jewish wedding ceremonies, in a venue selected by the celebrants and their families (subject to the Clergy availability). We invite members celebrating their wedding anniversary to come to the bima in the course of our monthly first-Friday “Celebration Shabbat” to receive the Congregation’s congratulatory blessings.
Conversion
Everyone in the community is welcome to consult with Rabbi Engel for information about giyur (conversion) or to undertake a course of study leading to formal entry into the Jewish faith community.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Members’ children who are near their 13th birthday (by either the Jewish or civil calendar), and who have completed the requisite educational requirements, may present themselves to the Congregation as B’nai Mitzvah at services on an assigned Shabbat. CRJ’s B’nai Mitzvah program is an intensive and supportive year-long program led by Cantor Jacki.
Death and Funeral
Members of the Congregation impacted by the catastrophic illness and possibly impending death of a parent, sibling, child or spouse may call upon CRJ Clergy or the Hospital Team for visitation in the hospital, hospice, or nursing home, and to administer vidu’i sh’chiv mei-ra (deathbed prayer). When impacted by the death of a parent, sibling, child or spouse, our Clergy will help our members plan for, and to officiate at, funeral or memorial services and guide your family through the grieving process.
Memorialization
Everyone in the community is welcome to memorialize their loved ones by sponsoring a tribute page in each year’s Congregational “Yizkor” book and/or a permanent memorial plaque in the Sanctuary. For more information contact Executive Director, Michael Kancher, mkancher@crjorlando.org or 407-645-0444.

Yala (Let’s Go!) An experiential education and social program for 7th-12th graders.
Yala, Hebrew for “let’s go,” combines experiential education and social experiences in a cohesive program that fosters Jewish identity development, community-building, leadership skills and deep connection to Jewish life. Yala is included in pricing for 7th grade Bar/Bat Mitzvah participants as well as the all-inclusive Jr. GORFTY and GORFTY pricing. If you do not fall under those categories, you can still participate in Yala for $150 per participant as a CRJ member and $199 per participant as a Community member.
Katan-Gadol (Little/Big) provides 7th-12th graders with a framework to develop and sustain mentoring relationships. Jr. GORFTY members are matched with GORFTY members and new GORFTY members are paired with seasoned GORFTY members. “Littles” receive advice, encouragement, information about youth group, and insight from older peers. “Bigs”, in turn, gain satisfaction and knowledge from guiding younger peers while fostering a sense of community. Held on Monday nights from 5:30pm-8:00pm, YALA YOUniversity is the core of the YALA program. Teens will grow socially, spiritually and Judaically through a variety of diverse experiences including chuggim (electives), chavurot (interest-based groups) and learning sessions designed for each individual group of participants. Teens come together for dinner, programming and youth group activities in the youth lounge with advisors.
Atid (Hebrew for “future”) participants support the CRJ Youth Program by serving as Jr. Youth Advisors. Our Atid program offers 8th-12th grade teens the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, to increase self-confidence, express Jewish values, and learn group leading techniques by assisting Youth Advisors during youth programs. SPACE IS LIMITED! Applications must be submitted online by August 12th
Held on Wednesdays twice per month – JEWman Group is designed to provide a relaxed setting where guys can come together informally. Meet-ups include a mix of basketball, informal discussions in the youth lounge, pool/darts, snacks and more!
Held on Thursdays once per month – GIRLSPACE is designed to provide a celebratory, empowering setting where girls can support each other in growing and learning while having lots of fun. Group meet-ups include a mix of discussion, socializing, cooking, making crafts, and enjoying snacks!

Confirmation represents the capstone of the Yala program of formal religious education at CRJ. Yala’s curriculum begins in 7th grade and culminates in a special 12th grade Confirmation experience. Confirmation is a recent addition to the cycle of Jewish observance and celebration. In the middle of the 19th century, the founders of the Reform movement felt that the ritual of Bar and Bat Mitzvah did not speak to the social and spiritual realities of an enlightened, non‑Orthodox European Jewry. They also were dedicated to a level of Jewish education for young people which required study beyond the age of thirteen. Consequently, many of these congregations created an extended and sophisticated program of study and a celebration of its conclusion. Today, Confirmation has become an integral part of the life of Reform congregations and of many Conservative congregations, as well.
The Yala curriculum for 8th-11th graders is designed to allow our teens to create their own journeys. Teens choose from a variety of chuggim, Hebrew for “electives” that appeal to them. Teens will take part in as many as 4 different chuggim each school year. From Judaism and Pop Culture to Today’s Hot Topics, Song Leading & Exploring Jewish Texts, Cooking Jewishly or our Jewish Actors Workshop (JAWs)… we strive to provide chuggim that are innovative, interesting and meaningful.

The Steinmetz Family School of Chai will nurture and strengthen our learners’ foundation for developing a strong sense of self, a caring sense of community, and a solid relationship with God. We will create an enduring partnership between our school and our families in order to plant the seeds for a rich tradition of lifelong Jewish learning. Our acclaimed Teen Ensemble, Shir Joy, is a select group of current post B’nai students from 8th-12 grade. Teen Ensemble members help lead Shabbat and High Holy Day Family service and perform throughout the greater Orlando area at community events.
This group of adult musicians is more than a synagogue band. They help enrich our worship experience through regular participation at Shabbat and festival services throughout the year. Congregational musicians with good sight reading and improvisational skills are encouraged to participate. Rehearsals are held several times throughout the year. Members of this Cultural Arts Collective will help inspire performances we give and activities in which we participate, including arts-related field trips.
The Temple Choir
Our congregational volunteer choir is open to adults of all ages, including post B’nai Mitzvah students. It is a group of dedicated singers who provide high quality Jewish music in a variety of settings. The choir meets monthly from November to June and more frequently in August and September. The Temple Choir participates every month during Shabbat Shirah – our special music service on the third Friday of every month.
Kol Tikvah is the young voice of our congregation comprised of students from K-6th grade. We meet during religious school and occasionally after school in preparation for special services and events.
