CONNECTED MANUFACTURING AND PARTS SOURCING Automation at the single machine and production line level has been around for decades. Sensors, microprocessors, relays, actuators and software have long managed individual machine functions on the shop floor. With increases in processing power, memory, bandwidth, and software functionality, however, digital technologies have allowed for a new vision of the manufacturing process which is rapidly coming into focus. Simply put, connected manufacturing, also called Industry 4.0 (or 4IR for Fourth Industrial Revolution), is the efficient integration of business and manufacturing systems throughout the factory and beyond using automation technology. That’s a very broad definition of a complex engineering undertaking which, at its ultimate would range beyond the single factory to a network of manufacturing locations, suppliers, shipping and even billing resources. Across industry, individual components of connected manufacturing technology have been embraced by some larger suppliers, enabling them to operate more efficiently using data to drive problem identification, solution development, implementation and outcome assessment. This ultimately reduces costs, improves product quality and delivery, increases customer satisfaction, and improves profits.
THE POTENTIAL OF BIG DATA It is estimated that adoption of smart manufacturing and machine learning systems will enable companies to increase production capacity up to 20% and lower material consumption by 4%. However, according to the recent PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) Global Industry 4.0 Survey, only 50% of respondents in 2015 said that data had any significant impact on their decisions. By 2020, according to the survey of over 2,000 companies, that figure is expected to reach 83%. The promise of fully connected manufacturing will require a leap forward from the individual factory floor to a fully connected system that will use a constant stream of data to learn, adapt and be flexible in its response to a rapidly changing manufacturing and business marketplace. All with minimal outside oversight.
1-800-56-SONIC www.e-sonic.com
8
SOURCING, A CRITICAL FACTOR IN SUCCESS A fully integrated connected manufacturing system will span the enterprise, all the way from initial sales order entry to final delivery confirmation and billing. Crucial to its success is strategic sourcing, or the identification and qualification of suppliers who can fit into the model, deliver quality product at a fair price, and do it either on-time or as the system demands due to changing parameters. This “digital supply network” must be able to share information with its customers on a real-time basis, predict or anticipate product need based on production data and customer demand forecasts, and offer automated stocking and replenishment. From an MRO standpoint, the network would also be able to anticipate downtime for repair, schedule and track preventative maintenance, address refit or safety issues, implement changes, and adjust to minimize production disturbances. The digital supply network would act accordingly, delivering needed components and materials to the appropriate locations exactly when needed to minimize confusion and part loss due to storage. This ability to predict future results would lead to improvements in uptime, quality, safety and product yield – and ultimately to bottom line profits. From a supplier perspective, integration into a connected manufacturing network would require an embrace of the technology for its own operations and sources and tying into the broader network on a 24/7 basis. The ultimate outcome would be replication across the manufacturing universe, as suppliers tie-into their customer’s networks and develop networks of their own.
THE CHALLENGES Connected manufacturing does not come without challenges and problems, not the least of which may be an inability to think big in the development stages. Other issues include: stable data networks, standardized process steps, management of complexity, IT security, and training of qualified employees to manage the network. Each company will assess its own strategy and needs in order to remain competitive in its environment and unlock value through connected manufacturing solutions. In the end, individual creativity and flexibility will bring the possibilities to life.

MANAGING YOUR MRO SOURCING PROCESS Maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) is the commonly used term for the process of keeping your production line and related equipment up and running efficiently to supply the demands of your customers. Whether your company is large or small, new or old, MRO is a significant issue. In fact, it is estimated that spending on MRO by manufacturing companies worldwide totals more than $30 billion per year and can range from 0.5% to 4.5% of a company’s total revenue. The management (or mismanagement) of MRO processes and parts procurement can mean significant risks to a company, including:
CONTROL OF PURCHASING ACROSS SINGLE OR MULTIPLE BUSINESS UNITS INVENTORY CONTROL & COST INEFFECTIVE BARGAINING POWER (LACK OF VOLUME PURCHASING) STOCK OUT OF CRITICAL PARTS PROPRIETARY SOURCING RELATIONSHIPS HIGH FREIGHT COSTS FOR UNPLANNED SOURCING
Many of these issues can be addressed through an effective review and forecast of operational needs and an intelligent sourcing strategy that takes advantage of suppliers who are willing to adapt and partner to simplify processes and prevent problems. Industrial MRO distributors who stock or source a large number and variety of parts, from connectors and fasteners, to switches, instrumentation, cables and fans, for example, can help companies consolidate their suppliers, simplify ordering, consolidate shipping, and streamline invoicing. They can also be a one-stop shop to address the service and repair complexity of modern production equipment. And their trained personnel can often offer alternate part solutions that meet OEM specifications.

18
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A DISTRIBUTOR PARTNER In order to realize the full benefits of an effective MRO sourcing relationship, you should be working with distributors who offer services like the following:
ALL THE PRODUCTS AND SOLUTIONS YOU NEED SAME DAY SHIPPING LOW MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITIES COMPETITIVE PRICING EASY TO NAVIGATE AND USE WEBSITE TECHNICAL SUPPORT
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PROGRESS None of this makes sense, or will offer the best results, if you don’t track your own internal MRO sourcing process along with your vendors. Your “dashboard” of data should include metrics that make sense, like MRO spend as a percentage of your procurement budget, age of MRO part inventory, percentage of rush orders, or on-time delivery performance, etc. The bottom line is, if you are going to have an MRO program that works effectively, you need to measure, plan, and implement procedures both internally and externally. It makes sense to get the most help you can from vendors who are capable and ready to partner to help move your business forward. Only then will you be able to forecast, spend wisely, and realize the positive impact on your business.

Hammond offers a broad line of enclosures designed to protect electronics from the harmful effects of water and dust in industrial environments. Enclosures rated UL Type 4X have the added benefit of corrosion resistance and are widely used across industry in general. Two markets where corrosion resistance is critical are oil & gas and food & beverage.
WHY CHOOSE HAMMOND? Hammond offers enclosures and accessories adaptable to nearly unlimited applications. They excel at protecting equipment from the ingress of water and dust, and different enclosure materials satisfy different chemical resistance requirements: • Polycarbonate enclosures offer resistance against chemicals such as acetic acid, ammonium phosphate, and citric acid. • Glass reinforced polyester offers resistance against chemicals as ammonium nitrate, axle grease, and butyric acid. • Aluminum enclosures offer resistance against chemicals such as acetone, ammonium sulfate, and gasoline.
ADAPTABILITY Hammond enclosures are not tailored to a few vertical markets. Instead, they are used broadly across industry. In part, this is due to adaptability. On their own, they can be used to house hand-held instruments or mounted to a wall. With accessory kits they can also be mounted to a pole.
