CEO Message: Focusing on the future
HAVING STEPPED INTO THE ROLE OF CEO, MY FOCUS IS FIRMLY ON MEMBERS AND OUR ROLE AS THE VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY.
Since being officially appointed as CEO in May, I’ve had my ear to the ground, checking with members to ensure we continue to have your back on the issues that are important to you. As I’ve criss-crossed the state at Roadshow, our Housing & Construction Awards and touching base with Committees of Management, hearing first-hand what is happening in the industry – there’s no doubt it’s a tough market out there. To ensure that we can effectively respond to the challenges members are facing I’m delighted that we have made two new appointments, giving us some additional firepower when it comes to representing members’ interests. We’ve welcomed Craig Dearling, General Manager - Workforce Services; and Kate Raymond – General Manager Advocacy & Policy – who will complement the great work of our existing team. Some of the current issues we are grappling with include the recent ABCC changes, changes to the project trust account framework, and the recent QBCC review. The QBCC review made 17 recommendations for reform – some in line with our own review submission – that we believe will generate positive changes and generally improve the QBCC’s capability and capacity to properly regulate the industry. A key reform to be implemented, that was also recommended by us, was the separation of the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme from the QBCC. The QBCC being both the regulator and industry insurer has been an issue for members for many years. While the review did not recommend disbanding the QBCC Board and folding the QBCC back into the department as we recommended, it has supported reducing the size of the Board and introducing greater integrity controls. An industry advisory body will also be established to allow industry to directly engage with the Board. Other recommendations in the report are targeted at improving the QBCC’s culture, capability, service practices and skill levels. These initiatives go some way to addressing the many performance issues, as raised in our submission. Our response to the review and original submission are available in full on our website. All in all, the review and action plan include some positive steps forward, but the fight is certainly not over. We will continue to be involved and ensure the industry’s voice is heard. PAUL BIDWELL, CEO
Don’t let mould put your project on hold!
Mould is a serious concern for builders. It results in costly delays while waiting for structures to dry and cleaning the mould further adds to the time and cost. Siniat’s Interhome is a popular separating wall system suitable for duplexes and townhouses, and is well-known for its ease of installation.
Interhome can now offer mould resistance.
By incorporating Siniat’s mould resistant Intershield in the central fire barrier, and mould resistant Multishield in the lamination of the barrier, mould does not have to put your project on hold.
