Master Builders – Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S FOREWORD

Achievements deserve celebration in this tumultuous year of extraordinary challenges, so we are prouder than ever to present the Excellence in Construction Awards magazine. COVID19 has had a major impact on the world and the way we live but our industry has continued to operate and has been backed by state and commonwealth governments to lead the economic recovery. Master Builders members are proud of the wonderful workmanship they display and continue to enter these awards to showcase their talents and give recognition to the fine contribution of associated trades. Each of our 100 entries has been individually inspected and judged by a panel of experienced master builders. The entries in this year’s Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards display first class workmanship and the highest construction standards of West Australian builders. Many thanks to our judging panel of eight experienced builders, one architect and three engineers for their commitment and dedication. They contributed their valuable time and, in some cases, travelled great distances to judge this year’s diverse range of projects. The Master Builders awards are open to all builder members and focus on the quality of workmanship and craftsmanship. The diversity and quality of Western Australian homes is world class, which characterises our high standard of living and lifestyle. Inside this publication is an amazing range of homes with many unique features catering for all budgets and tastes. These prestigious awards attracted a diverse range of entries including office buildings, aged care and educational facilities, including the Newman College Student Hub, Warders Hotel and NEXTDC P2. Some challenges encountered on the site included access constraints, maintaining a safe and clean site, deliveries, waste management, scaffolding and limited space onsite for site amenities. To overcome the limited space onsite, several of the ground floor cottages were fitted out as a temporary site office and lunchrooms, which were progressively relocated and rotated as works to the cottages were undertaken. Thomas Building’s Tambrey Village Shopping Centre Project was awarded the 2021 Building Excellence Award, Kimberley – Pilbara, one of the highest accolades within the commercial construction sector. Specialising in commercial and residential projects across Western Australia, Thomas Building is a grounded and well-rounded construction company with more than three decades of experience in the business. Personalised service and strong relationships form the core of the company’s foundation, offering full end-to-end project management from concept to completion. It is one of the few builders in WA to manage and deliver regional projects across the whole state, tackling distinctly regional challenges and delivering award-winning solutions and projects. Thomas Building also prides itself on thinking outside the box – adapting to change and challenges by thinking creatively, accepting possibilities and championing new innovations.

When all of these qualities combine, incredible achievements follow. A perfect example is the Tambrey Village Shopping Centre – Karratha’s first major new retail project in two decades. The strikingly modern hub was constructed to a superior standard by Thomas Building, who reached completion on time despite the double-whammy of COVID-19 and the cyclone season. The Tambrey Village development centres around an IGA and includes a cafe, tavern, pharmacy, kids’ play centre and other commercial and retail offerings. As a large-scale building in the Pilbara region of WA, there was already a degree of difficulty due to the remote location and cyclone season. The pandemic added the complexity of sourcing materials and skilled labour, but Thomas Building was in a position to use existing relationships with local trades to ensure no interruption to the construction. These logistical and environmental challenges required originality, problem solving, industry expertise and skilled workmanship – and the Thomas Building team delivered on schedule, to full client satisfaction.
