Is Regional Meeting Season! FALL SEASON

Each year as the fall season rolls around, MBI invites all members to join in on its Regional Meeting listen and learn tour. Spanning every corner of the state and many places in between, the MBI Regional Meetings are a fantastic way for members to witness first-hand the wide array of programs and services offered through an affiliation with MBI. All employees of member-companies are invited – and encouraged – to attend either the breakfast or lunch programs.

This year’s program will take a closer look at the array of exclusive member benefits and offerings as attendees will gain a better appreciation on how best to utilize their membership investment. For instance, the Regional Meeting agenda will take a closer look at the expansive list of programs offered as part of MBILive. Through the direction of our member-led education advocacy committee, the MBI-Live series was developed to offer on a weekly basis (specifically Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) programming – delivered conveniently via a virtual format – focusing on the entire Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, and Teams) as well as a training series on Procore that includes a focus on PMs and Superintendents. Finally, as part of MBI-Live we will be providing training on Basic QuickBooks for Construction. All these programs are again part of MBI’s exclusive member benefit package (i.e. free to members!)

Other items that fall in the MBI exclusive member benefit category and will be shared with members during these Regional Meeting events include details on The Source service that offers information on projects bidding throughout Iowa; the Executive Insights series that is exclusive to the C-suite individuals within member companies; and the introduction of the Lunch Club. Since we started the bi-monthly Breakfast Club networking sessions last year at the MBI Headquarters, we are now taking a similar program (i.e. Lunch Club) throughout the state to allow for more in-person networking opportunities.

In addition, the Regional Meetings will offer MBI staff the opportunity to share the new and innovative education and training programming that will be part of the overall curriculum as well as other aspects of MBI’s entire service offering. As part of the program, you will learn more about ways to enhance the development of your team through the following programs:

• MBI BuildHer

• Working Genius

• Dimensions of Wellness

• MBI REELZ

• Education & Training Schedule

• AGC (Associated General Contractors of America’s) Complement of Services

On behalf of all of us at MBI, we are excited to have this opportunity to share with you the entire complement of services that comes with your membership. See you this fall at a location near you!

EMPOWER. UPLIFT.

In the traditionally male-dominated field of commercial construction, women are breaking barriers and driving significant innovations. From project management to engineering and design, female leaders are reshaping the industry's landscape with their creativity, expertise, and determination.

Historically, construction has been perceived as a challenging industry for women to penetrate, with stereotypes and systemic barriers often discouraging female participation. However, a growing number of women are not only entering the field but also thriving and pioneering change. Their contributions are not only transforming construction practices but also fostering a more inclusive and dynamic work environment.

Looking ahead, the continued empowerment and recognition of women in construction will be crucial in addressing industry challenges and seizing new opportunities. At MBI, we have begun the ideation phase of building something to do just that. After digging deep into research, holding focus groups, and listening to our members, MBI will provide a space for female members beginning in April of 2025 titled MBI BuildHer. The MBI BuildHer initiative is a proactive response to the challenges and opportunities identified for women in the commercial construction industry. By focusing on professional learning, sponsorship, and service, the program aims to create a supportive environment where women can thrive personally and professionally. Providing the exposure to unleash the potential of women in our industry is a team effort – meaning men and women must create the environment for this to take place.

MBI BUILD

Here are some key points and strategies highlighted in the initiative:

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

MBI BuildHer is about strengthening and uplifting women connected to the Commercial Construction Industry. Bringing together aspiring, emerging and experienced women with everyday influence, to know and activate their purpose, to gain benefit from the learning and sponsorship of others, and to create strong relationships and connections.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

MBI BuildHer includes curated experiences and training sessions designed to develop essential skills like communication, negotiation, and navigating workplace challenges unique to women. This training also emphasizes work-life integration and personal wellbeing.

CULTURAL CHANGE

The initiative acknowledges the need for a supportive culture within the industry, encouraging both men and women to play active roles in creating an environment conducive to women's success. This cultural shift is seen as essential for attracting and retaining a diverse and skilled workforce.

COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT

MBI BuildHer offers both in-person and virtual opportunities for female members, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity across all of Iowa. This communityfocused approach aims to build solidarity and support among women in the industry.

"I'm so excited for MBI's new BuildHer program! This initiative brings essential education to women in construction, empowering more women to join and thrive in the industry. I appreciate MBI's passion and voice in driving this effort forward. "

"I am most excited about how MBI is going to help our industry determine barriers by engaging the right people, creating solutions to break down those barriers and have the confluence to accomplish the goal of creating a more inclusive culture in our industry that will be THE gamechanger."

In conclusion, the contributions of women in construction are not only reshaping the physical landscape but also inspiring a cultural shift towards greater inclusivity and innovation. The MBI BuildHer initiative represents a proactive step towards fostering inclusion, and professional growth within the commercial construction sector. By addressing systemic challenges and offering targeted support, MBI BuildHer aims to create lasting impact and opportunities for women in construction.

Winter is Right Around the Corner!

Prepare Now!

We cannot avoid winter, no matter how hard we try. Slips and falls, driving accidents, mental stress brought on by wintry conditions, and illnesses at construction sites all require a different approach.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, during the winter of 2020 there were 55 fatal work injuries caused by weather or atmospheric conditions. Data from the Cleveland Clinic noted approximately 11,000 people seek medical treatment yearly from shoveling snow. Injuries accounted for 93% of the visits, while 7% of those needing medical help where cardiac-related issues. Cold temperatures can constrict arteries, increase blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. Workers should not shovel snow if they have any heart issues, including coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, inactivity, diabetes, obesity, or tobacco use.

Dress Appropriately for Cold Weather

When did you last see a worker not wearing the appropriate clothing for the job site? Worker exposure to freezing temperatures should be reduced to the lowest possible level. Moreover, over-exposure can substantially contribute to stress and illnesses on the construction site.

Here are some tips on how to best bundle up:

• Properly fitted outer wear provides good insulation. However, tight-fitting clothing can have the opposite effect by decreasing blood circulation, which is critical to regulating body temperature.

• Your base layer should be made of moisture-wicking fabric to draw sweat away from your body. A good base layer helps ensure that none of your body's heat escapes. Proper base layer maintenance can also aid the outer layer of clothing in protecting a worker from the weather's direct effects. Also, a typical outer layer shell is waterproof and windproof.

• Cover your head, hands and feet! Obviously, wearing stocking caps, gloves, and proper footwear helps keep you warm, but more importantly this sort of clothing will help protect against frostbite of the outer extremities.

Mental Stress is Heightened During the Winter

The winter season is another stress factor on worker’s mental state, and we must be vigilant as an industry. During the winter months and the holidays, male construction workers are almost four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average.

Check Your Local Weather Forecasts

Monitoring the weather is crucial. If severe weather is approaching, be sure to check your jobsites before it arrives. It is important to identify what could eventually be buried under six inches of snow and our sites are much safer if we

clean up our yards or inspect our work sites the day before the snow hits. This would also be the time to fix those holes everyone knows about and pick up the tools lying on the ground and return them to their rightful place.

Likewise, be aware of icy conditions that result from snow, ice or re-freeze. Rather than slipping on the ice, plan to get the ice-melt down as soon as possible. After the weather hits, inspect the site to see if any damage was caused to the site or equipment that could delay work.

Equipment Gets Cold Too!

Ensuring the proper functioning of heavy equipment in winter is a multi-step process. Start by warming up the equipment adequately as per the manufacturer's instructions. This is crucial to avoid any potential damage. Next, allow electrical wires and hoses to heat up properly in cold temperatures. This step is often overlooked but can prevent significant equipment damage. Check that your equipment's fluids, such as engine and hydraulic oils, are rated for the temperatures in your area and replace them if necessary. (This simple check can save you from costly repairs.) Ensure the cab heaters are functioning properly and clear the windshields and steps of ice and snow. These small actions can go a long way towards ensuring the safety of your workers.

Extra precautions should be taken when working with air compressors and pneumatic tools. Air compressor tanks should be drained after each use to prevent accumulated moisture from freezing and damaging them. Ensure your compressors and air hoses are protected from the cold with antifreeze tool oil. Warm up empty nail guns at 40 PSI in freezing temperatures before using them.

According to OSHA, all vehicle and equipment operators should be properly licensed and trained for winter driving. In addition, the agency suggests using spaces like empty parking lots to practice navigating icy surfaces and keeping vehicles properly maintained and stocked with emergency items like flashlights, flares, jumper cables, blankets, nonperishable food, and water. We also need to ensure that our fuel has additives and that vehicles are plugged in, so we do not have hard start-ups.

Use all these tips to create weather-ready jobsites and crews before the winter weather hits. Should you or your team need additional information on cold weather safety, please contact Chris Pankow at Chris@IowaCSSI.com.

MASTER BUILDER DESIGNATION

Are You A Lifelong Learner?

Lifelong learning is an approach to learning, whether personal or professional, that is continuous, selfmotivated, and takes place throughout an individual’s life. A lifelong learner is open to new experiences and is enthusiastic about continuing to grow.

Professional development is gaining new skills and knowledge through continuing education and career training after entering the workforce. It is not limited to gaining new technical skills but also includes working on soft skills like communication, critical thinking, and leadership. It can open the door to career advancement and promotions.

The Master Builder Designation (MBD) Program was established to recognize those lifelong learners in the commercial construction industry that have been, or will be, active participants in the education and training offerings of MBI.

Those who enroll in the MBD Program will need to meet or exceed 150 education and training credits in the following categories:

• Leadership

• Project Management

• Ecological Construction

• Safety

• Ethics

• Elective

MBI provides many opportunities throughout the year for individuals to attain the required designation credits. This program has no cost to enroll, no specific timeline that it must be finished in, and no pressure. You can work through the program at your own pace. Access and track credits through the Training Vault or through the MBI App. Notifications regarding upcoming training events where Master Builder Designation credits will be awarded are sent to MBD

participants. If you are taking training classes anyway, why not earn credit for doing so?

Upon completion of the required 150 credits, you will be recognized at the next MBI Winter Conference and will be presented with a remarkable award! MBI worked with designers and artists to create a unique Master Builder Achievement Award specifically designed for those individuals who accomplish the goal of 150 Master Builder Designation credits. This award is a prestigious achievement and should be displayed proudly.

We encourage MBI member companies to showcase their employees who earn the Master Builder Designation by posting on company websites and social media platforms. Workplace recognition motivates, provides a sense of accomplishment, and makes employees feel valued. Recognizing and rewarding hard work, effort, and a culture dedication to training and education creates a supportive work environment where people will thrive and grow.

MBI members have long understood the value of making sure that they and their employees are continually engaged in learning to remain high performing organizations.

Employers:

We encourage you to promote the Master Builder Designation Program to your employees. Offering growth and learning opportunities demonstrates a commitment to your employees’ success. It creates motivated employees with clear, measurable goals, boosts productivity and enhances engagement and loyalty.

Employees:

Working towards a goal can give a sense of purpose, personal fulfillment, and accomplishment while improving your morale and happiness on the job. The awesome award you will earn when completing your MBD is the icing on the cake!

The Leadership Experience stresses to attendees that the most important person they will ever lead is themselves.

In addition to the classroom training, attendees receive one-on-one executive leadership coaching from our Executive Coach, David Rabiner. Becoming a great construction leader does not boil down to what you know technically, nor is it about who you know. It is about you, your character; your ability to lead yourself and others; your influence in good times and bad; and your individual career journey. Sales and Use Tax Updates

The sales and use tax rules for builders and contractors in Iowa are among the most complex in the United States. This webinar will address the sales and use tax issues related to new construction, renovation, repair and installation of tangible personal property. Depending on the type of construction project, we will provide guidance on the taxation on the purchase side and the sales side. In certain cases, the entire project cost could be subject to sales tax on the retail selling price or sales/use tax may only be due on the purchase price of the materials. Understanding this flow will prevent double taxation. Other states have more straightforward rules for contactors and most states do not tax construction labor. However, Iowa presents a risk to contractors. If sales tax is not built into a contract upfront, it is hard to go back and collect sales tax from the end customer. There are also favorable exemptions for contractors and we will discuss how to qualify for those exemptions.

Knowing you can be confident in your leadership team and peers, and that they can also trust you in return, can boost motivation and engagement in your work. Join us for this webinar where you will learn why trust is essential in the workplace, steps you can take to cultivate it, things to avoid so trust is not broken, and methods to repair trust once it has been compromised.

Did You Know?

WE MEASURE OUR "ENGAGEMENTS"

Engagements are the touch points we make with our members and are our leading indicators of customer success and satisfaction. How many people are we able to connect with each year? How many industry personnel are trained throughout education & training programs? How many of our members attended our networking sessions? How many safety consultations did we conduct? How many PAC participants did we gain? These types of questions are asked and measured throughout the year.

We believe in the value proposition of membership with us. But the proof is in the pudding. If our engagement numbers continue to climb as they have for the past few years, we believe that there is something driving attendance. However, if attendance begins to slip each year, it is time for self-reflection.

GOAL OF ENGAGEMENTS FOR 2024

40,000

Our goal in 2024 is to eclipse the 40,000 engagement number. We believe that as we continue to enhance the member exclusive benefits and offerings, that number will continue to grow each and every year.

And here is how you can get yourself and your people involved:

CONSTRUCTION

The construction industry continues to thrive, and one of the main reasons for that is the people that do the work. The people that make the industry what it is are the ones that deserve all the praise. Start the preparation for how you and your employees will celebrate Construction Week 2024.

CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2024

Any help you can provide in ramping up Construction Week 2024 would be helpful!

• Shine a spotlight on your exceptional field workers.

• Hold a company celebration (breakfast, lunch, break or outing).

• Contact a local media outlet to speak about the importance of Construction Week.

• Get into a classroom and speak about the rewarding careers.

This year, Construction Week will be celebrated on October 7th-11th. As we have done in previous years, we are planning to hold two different appreciation lunches and two different breakfasts on job sites yet to be determined. This will allow us to gather some press afterwards, and to show appreciation for the extremely valuable individuals in the construction industry.

As an MBI member, we are asking for your help to promote the men and women in your companies and the safe and effective job that they perform! Construction Week would honestly not be possible without the dedication and effort of hardworking members like you. We have done a lot of work on the workforce front in the past couple of years including the creation of our “Career Day/WorkBased Learning Days,” establishing our MBI-WORKS Fund, and taking every opportunity we can with stakeholders to promote the industry. Growing the industry is a main focal point for us, but it is equally important to take some time to shine a spotlight on those that make this industry stronger through the work that they do.

Any help you can provide in ramping up Construction Week 2024 would be helpful!

There are countless ways for you and your company to get involved in celebrating Construction Week. All our Construction Week resources can be found on the MBI website at www.MBI.Build/constructionweek, which will be updated regularly as more resources become available.

• Request that Construction Week be added to everyone’s calendar in the office.

• Promote Construction Week on all your social media channels by using #ConstructionWeek24.

We would love for you to share any additional promotion ideas you might have for Construction Week! Let us know how you plan to celebrate so we can continue to build off the successes of the past. We love hearing the new and innovative ways that you celebrate Construction Week. Have fun, get creative, and show our state that this is the best industry to be a part of! Construction Week is a culmination of all the demanding work that these individuals put in year-round, so let’s take the time to celebrate these amazing people!

We’re approaching the time of year when you might set a resolution or intention. For the past ten years, I’ve set an intention and will do so again next year! But I’ll also be setting an intention with two of my favorite teams: my leadership team at Darcy Luoma Coaching & Consulting and my girls.

Like individual intentions, a team intention can be used as a touchstone throughout the year. Having one word or phrase can serve as a reminder of how a team wants to act with each other — especially when distractions, crises, or opportunities pop up.

If you’d like your team to be more Thoughtfully Fit next year, it starts with getting aligned on how you want to be as a team. Start by thinking about these two questions:

• What three words would you use to describe your team in this past year?

• What three words would you like to describe your team next year?

After you have your list, consider the following:

• How different or similar are the words in each of your lists?

• What would need to happen to make the words for next year be an accurate description of your team?

Choosing an intention creates an opportunity to hear the different perspectives of each team member. It’s also good practice in working to get aligned, making a decision, and committing to a direction. These are all essential skills necessary to be a high-performing team.

Next, ask your team members the exact same questions! Pro tip: send the questions in advance so they have time to think about them, rather than just springing it on them in a meeting (this will especially help those who are more internal processors and need time to reflect).

DARCY LUOMA

After everyone has come up with their lists, meet as a team to share your words and get aligned on your intention for the year (which is different than outlining your goals). The process of agreeing on your intention will prove beneficial throughout the year, even if it’s hard to narrow it down to one you all can get behind.

Choosing an intention creates an opportunity to hear the different perspectives of each team member. It’s also good practice in working to get aligned, making a decision, and committing to a direction. These are all essential skills necessary to be a high-performing team.

Let us know your team’s intention by filling out this survey. We’ll send you extra information throughout the year on how you can keep your team intention front and center.

How to Leverage Sunday to Win Your Week

Blog Post by: Jake Thompson Compete Every Day

Sundays can be the launchpad for a strong week – and it doesn’t take much. Here’s my weekly 10 min routine to ensure I attack the week instead of wasting it by just going through the motions:

1. Review my calendar & what I’m committed to for the next 6 days.

(Side note: if I notice my schedule is packed, I make a sticky note on my desk to clear space in a week or two after & create more bandwidth vs hoping it doesn’t happen again.)

2. I set my intention of who I want to show up as. What identity do I want to reinforce and what traits do I want to embody this week?

3. Review my annual, quarterly, & monthly goals on my whiteboard, then set my 5 priorities for the week ahead. What do I need to hit to consider my week won?

4. Block time in my calendar to work on those five priorities.

5. Block time in my calendar for my workouts this week and which group classes I’ll attend.

6. Review pending tasks leftover from last week incomplete. Block small 20-minute windows throughout my week to continue working on them this week so I don’t hope I “find the time” for them.

7. Review my Start / Stop / Continue from Friday afternoon so it’s top of mind this week.

8. Enjoy the rest of my Sunday knowing I’m ready to attack Monday.

It doesn’t take much time to give yourself an advantage each week – simply 10 minutes of intentional focus when it’s more convenient to ‘roll into the week & figure it out then.’

Set yourself up to win this week by using Sunday to launch you toward a “W.” Do what most won’t to get what most want.

I’m cheering for you. ~Jake

WORK - LIFE HARMONY

Redefining the Relationship Between Work & Life

In today's dynamic work environment, the traditional concept of worklife balance has evolved into a more holistic approach known as work-life harmony. Unlike the notion of balance, which implies an equal distribution of time and energy between work and personal life, work-life harmony emphasizes integration, flexibility, and fulfillment across all aspects of life. It acknowledges that work is an essential aspect of life but emphasizes the importance of aligning work commitments with personal values, passions, and priorities. Rather than striving for a perfect balance, work-life harmony seeks to create a connection between professional aspirations and personal fulfillment.

Practical Strategies for Achieving Work-Life Harmony:

1.

2.

Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a priority by incorporating activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being into your daily routine. This may include exercise, meditation, hobbies, and spending quality time with loved ones.

Establish Clear Priorities: Identify your core values, goals, and priorities in both professional and personal domains. Use these priorities as a guide for decisionmaking and resource allocation, focusing on activities that align with your overarching vision for a hormonious life.

3.

4.

Embrace Technology Wisely: Leverage technology to enhance flexibility and productivity in both work and personal life. Use communication tools, project management software, and scheduling apps to streamline workflows, collaborate effectively, and maintain connectivity without being tethered to a traditional office environment.

Communicate Effectively: Open and honest communication is key to maintaining worklife harmony. Clearly communicate your needs, boundaries, and expectations with colleagues, supervisors, and loved onces to ensure mutual understanding & support.

BENEFITS OF WORK-LIFE HARMONY:

• Greater Fulfillment and Satisfaction: Work-life harmony enables individuals to pursue meaningful work while nurturing personal interests and relationships, leading to greater overall fulfillment and satisfaction.

• Improved Wellness: By prioritizing self-care and balance, individuals experience reduced stress, improved mental health, and enhanced resilience in the face of challenges.

• Enhanced Productivity and Creativity: A harmonious integration of work and personal life fosters a conducive environment for creativity, innovation, and productivity, resulting in greater success and achievement in both domains.

• Stronger Relationships: Work-life harmony facilitates stronger connections and deeper relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, as individuals have the time and energy to invest in meaningful interactions and shared experiences.

Work-life harmony represents a change in thinking towards a more integrated, flexible, and fulfilling approach to managing the complexities of modern life. By prioritizing alignment with personal values, flexibility, and self-care, individuals can achieve greater fulfillment, well-being, and success in both their professional and personal endeavors. Embracing the principles of work-life harmony fosters a more holistic and sustainable approach to life, where individuals can thrive and flourish in all aspects of their lives. communication is key to maintaining work-life harmony. Clearly communicate your needs, boundaries, and expectations with colleagues, supervisors, and loved ones to ensure mutual understanding and support.

A Sneak Peak At The

2025 Annual Winter

The 2025 Winter Conference will be held on February 25-26, 2025, at the Iowa Events Center in beautiful downtown Des Moines. During the two-day program, attendees will have access to over 25 different sessions and breakouts. We will have a variety of leadership and technical sessions throughout the two days. A highlight of the gathering is the coveted Industry Reception, where you can catch up with colleagues over a beverage and see the latest and greatest from our huge array of vendors. Highlighting the conference this year will be four dynamic keynote speakers who will cover an array of timely and thought-provoking topics. Jess Ekstrom will kick things off at the Build Iowa Breakfast by sharing her thoughts on Chasing the Bright Side: PurposeDriven Thinking Leads to Unstoppable Growth.

She will leave you feeling empowered to take on any challenge through her candidness about her own journey. A special part of this year’s event will feature her very first entrepreneurial endeavor, Headbands of Hope. Join us in providing headbands to the children at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and UnityPoint Health Blank Children’s Hospital. Also on Tuesday, Kevin Brown will discuss the Hero Effect during the Masters Award Luncheon. He is on a mission to help people and organizations embrace a simple philosophy that separates world class organizations and high-performance people from everybody else. He is passionate about helping people expand their vision, develop their potential, and

Conference

grow their results. Kevin challenges people to show up every day and make a positive difference at work and in life! On Wednesday, we begin the morning program with Allan Kehler who will get you thinking about how to prioritize your wellness and the wellness of our industry. The keynote roster is rounded off with Patrick Nelson who will give your safety and operational leaders a playbook to make safety personal and a driver of workplace excellence during the highly anticipated Safety Awards Luncheon. A popular feature at last year’s conference was the

newly added Project Management Boot Camp. We will be continuing this structure with a brand-new audience in 2025 that will be held throughout the two days of the conference totaling 10 hours of interactive and engaging content and workshops. The featured speakers who are scheduled to deliver a breakout session in addition to their keynote message are always a focal point of the Winter Conference, and we are extremely excited about the lineup for 2025.
