Session 1 – Transitioning to Leadership
PRESENTERS
Team Presenters: Alan Feirer & Henry Norman
Mike Doucette Russell Davenport, IA
In this high energy and interactive session, we will explore some of the most commonly found hurdles when individuals transition from being a member of the crew to leading the crew in the commercial construction industry. We will explore the traits that professionals adopt that is expected when roles change and you are the chosen leader, including motivating people, setting and meeting expectations, and the potential effects of what you say and do on and off of the job site.
Session 2 – Safety Leadership & Risk Management Team Presenters: Mike Doucette, Joe Melton & Henry Norman This session will combine four different concepts centered on the topics of safety and risk management for commercial construction companies. The Evolution of Safety will review how and why safety became so important and we will discuss some basic safety & risk management principles and how they evolved over the years. Truth or Dare? – The Truth About Safety Management and Dare to be Excellent will expose and explore the many long-standing, unquestioned ‘myth-conceptions’ concerning traditional safety which impedes organizations from attaining safety excellence. Dazed & Confused – Why Do We Do the Things We Do? will review aspects of behavior safety and explain how to stop the cycle of risky behavior and improve your safety performance. Power of Positive Reinforcement will discuss the critical conversations that occur each day, and lessons learned in navigating these critical moments. When influencing behavior change while not present is the art, skill and craft of mastering operant conditioning techniques such as reinforcement in a positive manner.
Session 3 – Communication for Connection & Cooperation Team Presenters: Alan Feirer & Henry Norman Arguably one of the most significant changes that we have witnessed in our lives is how we communicate with one another, and in this session, we will give you the tools to be a better and more effective communicator. We will explore written, electronic, verbal, and non-verbal communication in the commercial construction industry and give examples of pitfalls that may be encountered when communicating with employees, owners, sub-contractors, etc. Finally, and possibly the most important aspect of communication as a leader, we will address listening and the habits that you should try to avoid to become better at listening and interpreting what is being said.
Session 4 – Personal Effectiveness Team Presenters: Alan Feirer & Henry Norman In this session, we will address the individual skills that are critical to becoming a great leader in the ever-changing and constantly moving commercial construction environment. We will explore goal setting and how to best set, track, and reach your goals, as well as prioritizing the multitude of tasks and meetings that take place on projects. Next, we will focus on one of the biggest hurdles to individual productivity by teaching attendees how to identify and reduce wasted time in their schedule by controlling the amount of time spent on specific activities. Finally, we will address work / life balance and help attendees better understand how to prioritize between home and career, while being at their best in each environment. While we will be exploring these topics from an individual approach, these are all skills that can be applied in a group setting to make your construction team more successful in the field. The Master Builder designation program will offer the following credit hours for completion of this course.
