Your Trusted Advisors

BY JOE MELTON DIRECTOR OF SAFETY SERVICES

CSSI has been the trusted advisor and preferred Safety Consultant services of MBI for over three decades, and recent additions in personnel have brought expanded knowledge, experience, and qualifications to the CSSI team. We are excited to broaden the scope of services and offerings in the pursuit of influencing and enhancing safety in Iowa beyond compliance.

WHY a consultant? The obvious answer is a different set of eyes that have not become conditioned to the environment. We strive to provide a skilled and focused set of eyes. With a third-party perspective, comes education, knowledge, experience, and a point of view that sees what others are doing in the industry. This can be extremely beneficial for a project. At CSSI, we pride ourselves in attracting consultants that have industry experience, are in service to others, are professionals, and have a passion for enhancing cultures through positive safety interactions.

WHO can benefit from a consultant? The traditional CSSI retainer has been those organizations that are too large to be small, but just small enough to not fully warrant a fully staffed professional safety department. In these situations, it is important to provide expert compliance, regulatory, and general safety advice to these retainer clients. WHAT can CSSI offer for organizations that are larger with fully staffed professional safety departments? This is the exciting trajectory of the CSSI team and the recent additions to the team in the last 6 months have been attracting individuals with complementary skill sets. These additions in staffing and other partnerships have positioned CSSI as a consulting service for any sized organization. Larger organizations that have unique and specific needs can utilize the on-demand training and safety services.

Here is just a sampling of the services CSSI can provide: • Vehicle/mobile trailer inspections • Rigging equipment inspections • Monthly crane inspections • Fire prevention assessment • General industry inspection • Safety manual development/assessment • Site orientation assessments • Equipment operations evaluations • Behavior-Based safety coaching observations • Competent person fall protection equipment inspections • Competent person confined space • Competent person trenching and excavation • First Aid/CPR and AED certified trainers

With the recent elevation of Brandon Black to Senior Safety Consultant, CSSI is well-positioned to maintain the quality product our clients expect while ensuring consistency among our evergrowing roster of 5 full-time consultants and one part-time consultant. The additional staff has been strategically placed throughout the state, that includes one consultant in the west-central portion of the state to help serve our clients on the western side of the state. We divided the eastern portion of the state into the Cedar Valley/Dubuque and Iowa City/Quad Cities with both consultants covering Cedar Rapids. That leaves three full-time consultants to cover central Iowa. CSSI has never been this well-positioned to cover all of our clients' needs and job sites while reducing time spent behind the windshield to get there. We can maximize a clients' time purchased in the expertise they desire, rather than excessive windshield time.

For those looking or didn’t know they were looking for specific skillset assistance, here is a quick historical breakdown of qualifications and experiences our staff now poses:

• Certified EMT • Qualified Crane Inspector • Qualified Rigger and Signal Person • Heavy Equipment Operators • Heavy Highway, Bridge, and Culvert Inspector • OSHA Compliance office (Washington state) • Competent Person Confined Space • Competent Person Trenching, Shoring and

Excavation • IVES Equipment Trainer • Competent Person Fall Protection Through partnerships, we now have access to specific task student simulation experience trailers: confined space, trenching and excavation, fall protection, and tower training.

All of these services and experiences are in addition to the job-site inspections, 10/30hr construction and general industry training, IVES ™ equipment training, safety committee meetings, monthly/quarterly safety workshops, and OSHA compliance assistance.

CSSI is excited to offer our summer safety service retainer specials starting May 1st for six months, 10 hours a month for $7,500. This is a great offer for those companies that have wanted to try the retainer but didn’t have the larger jobs until now, or due to their specific business type winter is a slower time and wasn’t sure on how they would utilize the hours. This can also be beneficial for those organizations with a full-time safety department looking for a different perspective and coverage in their more outward job site, or have recently seen a dramatic business growth and want added assistance in protecting your number one asset… your employees.
