Podcasting - A New World for MBI 4
In today’s headline-driven world, everybody decides how to get their news and information a little bit different. Some check Facebook or Twitter before they even get out of bed. Some still prefer the smell of that newspaper (albeit not as many…..).
Executive INSIGHTS with Bâton Global
BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT/CEOMBI’s most recent Strategic Plan calls for the creation and development of an exclusive forum tailored specifically to executives within our membership. MBI will strive to provide perspectives to leaders within our membership-base through a program we are calling “Executive Insights”. Here, company leaders will have an opportunity to participate in exclusive idea and thought leadership sessions. (Only executive leadership from MBI’s membership will be invited.)
To help with the facilitation of this series, MBI has enlisted the services of Bâton Global. This group provides strategy, leadership, innovation and research services across Iowa and around the world. Bâton Global has earned a name for itself as a research group that has helped start-ups to Fortune 100 companies with strategic and innovative ideas.
As part of our scope of services with Bâton Global, a series of focus groups were held to gather information and perspectives from a select group of MBI leaders. Representatives from Bâton Global facilitated these focus groups during the MBI Annual Winter Conference. The focus groups, at the request of Bâton Global, were made up of executives from general contractors, specialty contractors and design professionals from throughout Iowa, representing most every aspect of the industry. This is important to best capture perspectives and insights that will aid in Bâton Global’s findings, which will be presented as part of the Executive Insights program.
With information gathered from industry leaders via the focus groups, next Bâton Global will create a series of online surveys to garner additional thoughts from within the MBI membership.
While the surveying process continues, researchers from Bâton Global will also be collecting information from various local, regional, national and international sources with the goal of aggregating trends impacting not only the construction industry, but also the many sectors that MBI members target for market development opportunities.
Finally, Bâton Global will host two sessions in which the information will be shared with executives within the MBI membership. These invite only, exclusive programs will be held on May 4th and September 12th
MBI is excited to provide this program as a way to enhance member engagement and provide value for your membership investment.
We are pleased to partner with Merchants Bonding Company as the lead sponsor of the Executive Insights series.
MBI members will soon have a new resource available! We plan to attract people to the construction industry through a "reverse" job board concept. We are excited to add the reverse job board concept on IowaConstructionJobs.com. Our intent is to market this concept within the Iowa Workforce Development offices (IowaWORKS offices) along with other entities such as chambers of commerce within and outside of the state. There will be a bank of applicants that only MBI members will be able to reach out to once they are in the system. People seeking employment opportunities in the trades will be able to upload their resume on the user-friendly job board, which will allow MBI member companies to view them based on what they are looking for and if they are a good fit. An approval process is also in place for each application received. Once approved, the candidate's information will be uploaded in the bank of resumes. We are very excited to get this up and running, as we believe that this will be a vital resource for connecting people to the construction industry.
If you have family members that are seeking employment, and feel that the construction industry would be a great fit for them, please let them know about IowaConstructionJobs.com. They will be able to put their resume on display for many employers in the industry, which will likely result in meaningful employment in a rewarding career. We continue to market this resource to organizations that are connected to individuals that are seeking opportunities in the trades. The workforce shortage continues to be a struggle, and it is our duty to make sure that we are providing resources for our members to help them combat those struggles. We believe that the workforce is out there, and this will help connect them with amazing employers that could use their skillset. Our hope is that this resource will be another way that we can provide an impactful resource to our members.

PODCASTING – A New World for MBI
In today’s headlinedriven world, everybody decides how to get their news and information a little bit different. Some, check Facebook or Twitter before they even get out of bed. Some, still prefer the smell of that newspaper (albeit not as many…..).
But podcasting has been a driving force of distributing information for the last decade. We are hardly pioneers in the podcasting world. But one of the best features of our new headquarters building is having the ability to have our own podcast studio so we can bring that information right to your fingertips or in your vehicle.
That day is finally here.
We’re excited to tell you about The MBI EDGE Podcast – a platform that will help Educate, Develop, Grow and Enhance you and your company. Through the podcast, we’re going to be discussing the legislative session, talking with personalities who have stories to share, grabbing safety tips and sometimes make it random with tidbits of information that we think you can only get through The MBI EDGE. In fact, our first 3 episodes include an overview of our legislative priorities, an introduction to our CSSI team and even a segment with MBI’s travel consultant who will be advising members about the upcoming out of country excursion.
All of these episodes are now available wherever you get your podcasts including Apple, Spotify, Google and Amazon.
We couldn’t be more excited about this endeavor and hope that you’ll join us by listening in. And, if you have interest in being on the podcast, let Ben Hammes know by emailing him at BHammes@MBI.Build.

THE 8 CASH FLOW DRIVERS IN BUSINESS
BY MARK STANLEY THE WHY! COMPANYWHAT ARE THE EIGHT CASH FLOW DRIVERS?
Cash flow is essential for the success of any business. Without sufficient cash flow, a business may struggle to pay its bills, invest in new opportunities, or even survive in the long run. While there are several cash flow drivers, these eight cover a lot of ground.
By focusing on these eight cash flow drivers, businesses can identify opportunities to improve their cash flow and take action to implement changes that will help them achieve their financial goals.
1.Sales
Increasing sales volume and improving sales processes can improve cash flow by bringing in more revenue. To increase sales, businesses can invest in marketing and sales initiatives, optimize pricing strategies, and improve customer service to drive repeat business.
2. Gross Margin
Improving gross margins by reducing costs of goods sold can increase profitability and cash flow. To improve gross margins, businesses can negotiate better supplier contracts, optimize production processes, and introduce new products or services with higher margins.
3. Operating Expenses
Managing operating expenses can help control costs and improve cash flow. To manage operating expenses, businesses can reduce unnecessary costs, renegotiate supplier contracts, and optimize their core processes to increase efficiency.
4. Inventory
Managing inventory levels and turnover can improve cash flow by reducing the amount of capital tied up in inventory. To manage inventory, businesses can implement inventory management systems, negotiate better supplier contracts, and optimize production processes to reduce waste and improve turnover.
5. Accounts Receivable
Improving accounts receivable processes and reducing outstanding balances can improve cash flow by bringing in cash more quickly. To improve accounts receivable processes, businesses can implement automated billing and collection processes, establish clear payment terms, and monitor outstanding balances to identify and address issues.
6. Accounts Payable
Managing accounts payable can help control and improve cash flow. To manage accounts payable, businesses can negotiate better payment terms with suppliers, establish clear payment processes and prioritize payments to ensure that they are meeting their financial obligations while maintaining sufficient cash reserves.
7. Capital Expenditures:
Managing capital expenditures and investing in assets that generate income can help improve overall cash flow. To manage capital expenditures, businesses can prioritize investments in assets that generate cash flow, such as equipment or technology that improves efficiency and productivity.
8.
Owner Distributions:
Managing owner distributions can help ensure that the business has sufficient cash reserves to meet its ongoing needs. To manage owner distributions, businesses can establish clear guidelines for distributing profits.

YOUR BOARD WORKING FOR YOU!
BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT & CEOThe MBI Board of Directors selected its new executive committee members at the Annual Winter Conference. The Board elects a Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer to serve for a period of one year, or until their successors are elected and qualified. The MBI Bylaws require that the Treasurer shall automatically succeed to the Vice Chairman and then to Chairman of the Board. The 2023 Executive Committee shall be as follows: Randy Clarahan of Mortenson shall serve as Chairman of the Board; Mike Espeset of Story Construction Co. shall serve as Vice Chairman; Gordon Parker of Rinderknecht Associates, Inc. shall serve as Treasurer; Steve Ferguson of Breiholz Construction was elected to Secretary; and Paul Koester, Koester Construction Company, Inc. will serve his remaining year as the Immediate Past Chairman.
New additions to the Board as recommended by a Nominations Committee and approved at the membership meeting include Amy Fetters, McGough Construction – Des Moines; Katy Susong, Cardinal Construction, Inc. – Waterloo; and Brent Thompson, Elder Corporation (serves as the Associate Council representative) – Pleasant Hill.
Each year, the MB EYE on the Future class elects a graduating member to serve on the Board of Directors. New for 2023, the MBI Board is asking that the MB Eye on the Future representative serve a 2-year term, instead of a single year on the Board. This year, Nichole Schmidt of Turner Construction was selected as the 2023 class representative.
We also want to take the opportunity to thank our retiring Board members who have completed their term of service – Steve Lang, Lang Construction Group and Scott Turczynski, Heartland Companies. Also, we want to recognize Don Snyder of Dean Snyder Construction. Sadly, Don passed away February 15th. He was first appointed to the Board in 2019 and was nearing the completion of his term until his untimely passage.
MBI and the Iowa construction industry lost one of its leaders recently. Don Snyder of Dean Snyder Construction passed away unexpectedly on February 15th. He has served on the MBI Board of Directors since 2019 and had been active with MBI for many, many years. We appreciate Don’s service to the industry and he will be forever missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Don’s family and the entire DSC team.
The following is a statement provided by representatives from Dean Snyder Construction:
It is with great sadness and disbelief, we announce the unexpected passing of Don Snyder. Don and his brothers started working with Dean at a young age to help grow this company, and he had celebrated a milestone of 50 years with DSC in 2022. He helped expand our central Iowa reach by opening our Ankeny office in 2001 and was a leader in our relationship with Fareway. His legacy and commitment to the commercial construction industry can be seen in buildings across the state and beyond.
Don’s passion for DSC was unwavering; evident in the way our colleagues also love this company because of the work he and his brothers put into building it. His love and generosity touched the lives of many, including the numerous organizations he held relationships with, always wanting to improve the world for the next generation. Don’s leadership had a profound impact on all of us at DSC; we will never forgot the lessons learned and moments we shared with him. Don will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Let’s all do as Don would want, “treat each other like family and tell good stories.”

HOW RISK MANAGEMENT CAN HELP YOUR COMPANY
BY DAVE EATON CSSI SAFETY CONSULTANTConstruction, by its very nature, is full of risks. Few, if any, MBI members will disagree with this statement. This discussion aims to prompt a thought process that may help you decide how your organization chooses to deal with risks. Will risk be managed and controlled? Will your company rely solely on having experienced management, believing they should be able to handle any adverse outcomes from those risks when they happen?
RISK MANAGEMENT: A PROCESS AND A SYSTEM
Risk Management is the process of identifying, analyzing, and controlling financial, legal, strategic, and security risks to an organization's capital and earnings.
Risk Management is also a system. With a systems approach, management views the organization in terms of many interrelated connections, interactions, and processes, versus independently managed departments or silos that have separate management structures.
THE RISK MANAGEMENT PROCESS
1. Identify the risks to your business.
Example: Conduct a company risk assessment (not precisely the same as a project or safety risk assessment). Caution: Risk assessments ultimately search for potential variations from desired or expected outcomes. By itself, a risk assessment does not achieve its objectives. Having in place an effective communication framework is essential. Risks identified in risk assessments must be communicated to decision makers in a usable form. In other words, communicating “data” is not as good as communicating “information” and “knowledge”.
2. Analyze the probability and impact of each risk.
This involves considering the likelihood and quantifiable impact of occurrences that could cause variations from
expected or desired outcomes. They could affect such things as deadlines, employees, reputation, financial results, etc.
3. Prioritize risks based on the potential impact on the organization’s finances or business objectives.
List the risks in order, quantified based on preestablished criteria, then top management will determine which ones to focus on and devote resources.
4. Implement techniques for dealing with or managing the risks that can cause variations in expected or desired outcomes.
Eliminating or reducing variations from risks to key systems, i.e., by mitigating, financing or transferring risks.
5. Monitor the results of the techniques deployed, communicate them and adjust as necessary.
Establish good data sources, establish processes to convert data into information and knowledge, gathering and comparing input from all areas of the business and external sources, such as insurers, peer businesses and trade organizations.
Is the Risk Management Process Unique?
Risk Management is really just good management.
Most experts and business schools agree that the process of general business management involves four basic activities:
1. Planning and making decisions on courses of action.
2. Organizing and coordinating activities and resources.
3. Leading, including managing, motivating and directing people to action.
4. Controlling, by monitoring and evaluating results, modifying activities as needed.
•
• ANALYZE
• PRIORITIZE
• IMPLEMENT TECHNIQUES
• MONITOR AND ADJUST
The diagram above shows how similar the risk management and business management processes are.
RISK MANAGEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION
Common risks facing construction projects are natural disasters or acts of God, financial risks, legal risks, project risks, safety risks and reputation risks. A risk management plan, developed through the Risk Management Process, can provide your company with many benefits, including increased efficiency, enhanced safety, higher confidence in projects and increased profits. The ultimate goal is to reduce or control variations and to lower the Total Cost of Risk, which is the combined cost of insurance premiums, retained losses (deductibles/uninsured losses) and risk control costs (e.g. safety programs).
HOW CAN RISK MANAGEMENT HELP MBI MEMBERS?
There has been a trend among large companies to combine the entire range of traditional risk management functions (insurance, self-insurance, safety, loss control, etc.) together with all other risks in the business operating environment, like market conditions, supply chain, product offering strategies, etc., in an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Department under a risk manager. This is not necessarily wrong, depending on the company’s culture, but enterprise risk management can be accomplished without hiring a risk manager. By establishing an effective cross-functional committee with a membership of all business-critical functions, internal control compliance requirements can be met through good communication between these cross-functional committee members. This interaction among committee members is sometimes referred to as an “environmental scan”. The findings of the business risk environmental scan are then published and made available to auditors, regulators, the public or customers as needed.
•
• CONTROL AND MODIFY ACTIVITIES
HOW CAN I START MY COMPANY ON THE PATH TO EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT?
With my background as a risk manager in both the public and private sectors, MBI is now able to explore the capability of helping its members who do not have risk managers to address the discipline of risk management and how it can be integrated with their other internal controls and business processes. Let’s have a conversation about how organizing and improving your company’s approach to risk management can lower your project risks and lower the Total Cost of Risk for your organization, without adding a risk manager position.

2023 Legislative Session Report
BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRSAs of the publishing of this article, the 2023 Legislative Session will likely still be ongoing. While MBI has had a narrower agenda this year in relation to the past, we have still maintained an active presence at the Iowa Capitol since January.
The 2023 MBI Legislative Agenda, as approved by the Board of Directors, is as follows:
Property Tax/Tax Reforms
MBI Position: Iowa should take a holistic look at the property tax system in Iowa – both residential and commercial – while ensuring that local governments are property funded for their economic development needs. If TIF is addressed, reforms should be made to strengthen the tool rather than diminish its effectiveness.
Update: Many different proposals are working their way through the Capitol as we speak. It is unclear if there is a pattern or consensus amongst both the House and Senate on any meaningful reforms.
Sales Tax for Sister Companies
MBI Position: MBI supports legislation that would ensure continuity in treating controlled entity groups avoiding instances of being double taxed.
Update: MBI has HSB 68 filed and is expected to be moving through the House after the 1st funnel deadline on March 3rd.
Economic Development Programs
MBI Position: Support the State of Iowa’s efforts to build our communities with effective economic development tools while looking at ways to inject private investment into vertical public infrastructure needs.
Update: MBI has registered in support of the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s “MEGA” site bill. That bill is HSB 147. It is important to know that this bill would not allow for foreign state owned entities to purchase farmland, but foreign privately owned companies.
RIIF Funding
MBI Position: RIIF monies are needed for infrastructure purposes and should not be diverted for non-infrastructure related needs.
Update: The RIIF bill will be released at a later date and negotiated.

2023 MBI-WORKS ENDOWMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS
BY ADAM DOBRASKA MEMBER SERVICES ASSOCIATEThe MBI-WORKS Endowment was created to offer resources to complement career education and workforce recruitment into the Iowa commercial construction industry. Many people don’t know just how many opportunities there are within the industry, and it is our hope that we can help shine a spotlight through this Endowment. We are very impressed by the 2023 MBI-WORKS Endowment award winning proposals. The Endowment Board reviewed and scored each proposal diligently, and have concluded that five of the six projects submitted will be funded in 2023. The first round of funding went out to each award recipient in January 2023. The funding will be sent quarterly.
The top-rated proposal was submitted by Southeast Polk School District in Pleasant Hill, who partnered with Elder Corporation, Price Electric, CTI Ready Mix, Ryan Companies, and A King’s Throne. The funds for this project will be used to renovate a district owned pole barn into the skilled trade extension near the high school. The impact that this project will have will be long lasting, as many students will be able to utilize this facility for hands on projects year after year. The funding awarded for this project from the Endowment is $86,123. In addition, the school district has committed $95,427 in cash match and in-kind contributions.
The next award-winning proposal was submitted by North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), who partnered with Kingland Construction Services in Forest City. This project will utilize a hook lift truck system that transports containers with tools, equipment and supplies to job sites by NIACC Construction Trades dual enrollment students. The grant funds will purchase three containers to be outfitted with equipment specific to job needs, including concrete work, framing and wall construction, hand tools, equipment, scaffolding and safety equipment. The funding awarded for this project from the Endowment is $30,000 In addition, the community college has committed $196,878 in cash match and in-kind contributions.
The third project funded was the Cedar Falls Community School District, who partnered with Cardinal Construction & Invision Architecture. They plan to purchase and install a wet spray booth in the new High School, specifically for the carpentry classes. Students will be able to learn trade skills of painting, staining, and applying finish on doors, cabinets, wood trim, and other surfaces prior to installation. The funding awarded for this project is $38,675.
Siouxland Construction Alliance out of Sioux City has partnered with several MBI members such as L&L Builders, W.A. Klinger, Tri-State Drywall, Thompson, CMBA Architects, C.W. Suter & Sons, Certified Testing Services, Nelson Engineering Const., Trinity Electric, Van Osdel Plastering, and Nystrom for their project. We are thrilled with the amount of MBI support this project received! This proposal centers around a handson day for high school students. The event will bring construction industry and high school students together in hopes that the construction industry can promote the trades. The goal is to keep growing this event over time. The primary objective for them is to introduce students to the construction trades. The funding awarded for this project is $12,000. In addition, the school district has committed $18,000 in cash match and in-kind contributions.
Lastly, the Ankeny Community School District (ORBIS Program) has partnered with ISG, Baker Group, Iowa Skilled Trades, and Dean Snyder Construction for their proposal. Ankeny will use this grant for skilled trades materials and tools for innovator projects, and expansion of career camps for students and educator professional development. The funding awarded for this project is $10,500.
MBI is proud of the large level of community involvement through in-kind and matching support that many of these projects received. We are very honored to award these projects with these funds from the MBI-WORKS Endowment to the tune of $177,298. We always like to see community support with each proposal that is submitted, because it shows that the community can see the potential that the MBI-WORKS Board members see as well.
We are also in our second year of committing $62,500 to the UNI Applied Engineering Project in Cedar Falls. You may recall that the Board decided to make a $250,000 contribution to the project over a fouryear time period that will end in 2025.
Please keep the MBI-WORKS Endowment in mind this spring if you have any projects that you could partner with a non-profit on, or if you know of a non-profit that might be able to utilize the Endowment in the future. After all, the Endowment is focused on providing funds for project and programs that will have a long-term impact on the future of workforce in the construction industry.
For any questions regarding the MBI-WORKS Endowment, please direct those to Adam DoBraska at ADoBraska@MBI.Build, or 515-777-5054.

MBI is Shining a Light on MENTAL HEALTH and WELLBEING in the Construction Industry
BY CAL BEYER VICE PRESIDENT, WORKFORCE RISK & WORKER WELL BEING - HOLMES MURPHYMBI is continuing to emphasize workplace and jobsite mental health and wellbeing as a strategic issue for 2023 and beyond. These issues are of importance to all construction stakeholders throughout Iowa. MBI scheduled two workshops in February and May 2023 pertaining to worker wellbeing being facilitated by Cal Beyer, the Vice President of Workforce Risk and Worker Wellbeing for Holmes Murphy & Associates.
The February 2nd workshop was a hybrid session and had thirty-two attendees learning about How and When to Talk to Workers About Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. On May 2nd Beyer will be facilitating and moderating a 6-hour workshop on Strategies for Building a Mentally Healthy Workforce. This session will include guest speakers from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. A panel of MBI member contractors will share best practices from their workplace mental health initiatives. Brad Churchill, CEO of US Erectors in Pleasant Hill (IA) will share lessons learned from the lens of lived experience of his family’s grief journey losing a teenage son to suicide.
Beyer is a nationally recognized subject matter expert on workplace mental health. Beyer has been working on workplace mental health since post-Hurricane Katrina. He was appointed to the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention in 2010 and started a construction subcommittee by 2012. He launched a mental health and suicide prevention campaign in 2014 while working at director of risk management for a hot mix asphalt producer and paving contractor in the Pacific Northwest. He was recognized by EngineeringNews Record magazine as a Top 25 Newsmaker in the global construction industry for his work with suicide prevention.
MBI asked Beyer to share practical pointers on how to talk to office employees and field workers about mental health and suicide prevention in the workplace:
What are simple resources employers can share with employees and family members?
1. 988 is the nation’s new 3-digit hotline for crisis and suicide prevention. It is free, confidential, and available 24/7-365 days per year. It is new since July 2022. Since it launched, it is working very well with call volume doubling and response times being cut in half. Workers and families seeking help and resources can call or text for any crisis including, but not limited to suicide prevention.
2. Crisis Text Line is a free and confidential service available 24/7-365 days per year. Workers and family members can text HELP or CONNECT to 741741.
3. Your Life Iowa is a service offered by the Iowa Department of Public Health. This service is available 24/7-365 and can be accessed via phone at 855/581-8111, text at 855/895-8398 or via live chat. Resources for employers may be obtained at https://yourlifeiowa.org/resources, including posters and wallet cards.
4. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are frequently available in employer- and unionsponsored health benefit plans. EAPs offer a range of services based on the contract of the provider with the sponsoring employer of union. Employers can ask their Employee Benefit advisor or union health benefit coordinators for more information on available EAP resources.
How can employers help their workforce address wellbeing to promote mental health?
• Adopt a culture of wellbeing to combine physical health and emotional health.
• Communicate to all employees that “it is ok to not be ok.”
• Acknowledge that these are trying times and that the company cares about them and their families.
• Share information about mental health support services for employees to share with their loved ones.
• Encourage leaders to be intentional in demonstrating care for workers by being visible and vocal about mental health and to be vulnerable about seeking help themselves or for family members.
What can be done to encourage construction workers to consider their mental health and wellness and seek help?
• Double-down on physical health and safety to promote wellbeing, including warmup exercise programs, nutrition, hydration, and stress management skills, like deep breathing.
• Reduce barriers to care seeking by promoting onsite wellness and health services.
• Actively communicating about the importance of mental health reinforces that seeking help is a sign of strength and not a sign of weakness.
• Provide training to teach peer leaders to be mental health and wellbeing champions and peer coaches.
• Educate workers on their employee health and welfare benefits available in either the employeror union-sponsored health plan.
What can companies do to reduce the elevated risk of suicide among construction workers?
• Incorporate mental health and wellbeing into apprenticeship programs.
• Focus on reducing the frequency and severity of musculoskeletal injuries which creates chronic pain, disrupts sleep, contributes to fatigue, and leads to unnecessary opioid pain management prescriptions.
• Aggressively promote the Employee Assistance Programs, as well as 988 (3-digit Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) and Crisis Text Line.
• Conduct Toolbox Talks on assorted topics relating to physical health and mental wellbeing topics.
• Create a custom hardhat sticker to show support for mental health.
How can workers help colleagues?
Make a personal commitment to be a quality teammate
• Be observant and go to a crewmate to ask if they are ok when you see changes in their behavior.
• If the crewmate says they are fine, it is ok to say “you do not seem fine. I care about you. I have rough times too, let me know if I can help. I am here for you if you want to talk or need support.”
• Commit to being your brother’s and sister’s crew and adopt a mindset of no person left behind and being there for every crew mate.

THE LETTERMAN
BY JOE MELTON DIRECTOR OF SAFETY SERVICESPartly for what the letters and pins mean. They stand for the efforts, hard work, determination, and execution required to earn such designations. These same principles can be applied to safety and how we perceive the many different certifications and credentials.
Some designations may not make sense and be daunting to decipher for those not in the safety world. Here is a quick guide that can be helpful when navigating qualified personnel or when owners and bids require specific designations to be awarded a project.
Abbreviation
CSP ASP
CIH
CHMM
Qualification
Certified Safety Professional
Associate Safety Professional
Certified Industrial Hygienist
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager
Associate in Risk Management
Certified Professional Ergonomist
an individual successfully passing the ASP Exam or acquiring the GSP (Graduate Safety Practitioner) for those that graduate college with a degree in Safety, Health, and Environmental fields. The CSP also requires, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of working experience with at least 50% in a safety-related field. The CSP also represents that an individual has remained current by obtaining the necessary CEUs in the 5-year recertification window.
CSHO SHEP
Construction Health and Safety Technician
Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician
Certificate of Safety and Health Official Safety, Health & Environmental Professional
The CSP provides safety practitioners a path to greater recognition and career opportunities, offering a certification that demonstrates you have met the requirements for the gold standard of SH&E credentials and have achieved the industry’s most-recognized SH&E certification. – Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
For those looking to advance their career, working knowledge, and competency, other certifications are available for those without a bachelor’s degree. The CHST in the Construction industry is a highly regarded and equally difficult exam to pass, with CEU requirements. The CSHO and SHEP are commonly regarded certifications through the OSHA Education Outreach Institutions. The CSHO and SHEP represent an individual who has accomplished many of the 500-level OSHA classes required to become OSHA 10 and 30-hour instructor for their respective industries.
Why is it important to understand what is behind the safety letters? The owners and phases of specific projects may require full-time safety professionals onsite. In some cases, it may be designated what qualifications these individuals will need. There are also scenarios where they may only require the supervisor of the onsite safety professionals to be credentialed; commonly, they will require a CSP. Other times they may only require a qualified safety professional”. In this instance, a CHST or CSHO would suffice and meet/exceed the requirement.
For those individuals responsible for estimating, bidding, and developing business, knowing how to interpret these letters can provide a step up over your competition while also potentially preventing you from sourcing a skill set that might not be fully necessary. At CSSI, full-time and part-time staff hold many of these designations, including multiple CSPs, ARM, CHST, and several CSHOs. These designations offer a professional-level of service to the MBI Membership that not only can assist in providing a safe worksite but also provide a competitive edge in specific situations in which these designations might be required.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ATTENDEES
Leadership Development Program Attendees
CONGRATULATIONS
BY TOM FULCHER DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONMBI has a proud tradition of helping mold motivated industry professionals into industry leaders through our professional development series that are held annually. Whether it be leadership in the field, the board room, or anywhere in between, MBI has the tools to elevate industry leaders.
Each of MBI’s leadership development programs focus on a host of different industry related topics with some being addressed from the 30,000 feet view and others really getting down “in the weeds”. In each case the attendees are educated and challenged toward becoming the best version of themselves to the benefit of their company, industry, family, and community.
MBI would like to thank the employers of each of the attendees listed on the next few pages for providing the time, support, and resources for each of them to be successful.
Finally, congratulations to the attendees of these leadership development programs! Throughout your respective program, you remained focused and professional with your education while running projects, raising families, and being involved in your communities. We are confident in saying that these are the future leaders of many MBI member firms and as a result, Iowa’s commercial construction industry is in great hands for years to come!
LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Since early December, a dedicated group of 22 industry professionals have met a couple times a month as part of MBI’s The Leadership Experience program with Executive Coach, David Rabiner.
These individuals were engaged throughout the series that included discussion, small group activities, and a group project dedicated to the area of communication, collaboration, culture, and customer. In addition, each attendee participated in a one-on-one private coaching session with David.
We want to congratulate and commend these professionals for their time, effort, and dedication toward personal growth as well as applaud the member firms who afforded each attendee the time and resources to participate.

This five-part series helps your interns gain valuable exposure to our association, practice their networking skills, and get a taste of our educational and professional development offerings. It is our hope that by connecting with these students before graduation, we are expanding our association’s reach to the next generation and strengthening the workforce efforts of Iowa’s commercial construction industry.
Registration for this series will open soon. All MBI members are eligible to enroll their interns, with a maximum of two interns per company. We do ask that all participants attend all five sessions; upon completion of the series, interns will be presented with a certificate and an MBI gift.

MBI HONORS THE BEST OF THE BEST!
Build Iowa Award
MIKE SIMPSON Neumann Brothers, Inc.
Since its inception in 1989, there have been 37 individuals bestowed with the Build Iowa Award. These individuals symbolize the leaders of not only MBI, but Iowa’s construction industry and the communities in which they do business. The Build Iowa Award recipient exemplifies the tenets of our organization…skill, integrity and responsibility.
The Build Iowa Award is the industry’s highest individual achievement and it is presented each year to a builder in Iowa. From a perspective of contributions to the industry, Mike Simpson has certainly excelled. He has served as the Chair on the MBI Board of Directors; President of the Des Moines Construction Council; Board Chair of the Construction Financial Management Association, while also serving on the ACE Mentoring Board and a Trustee on the Carpenters Local 106 Retirement Fund. Equally as impressive has been his involvement in the community.
Mike has served on the Des Moines Redevelopment Company Board; the Greater Des Moines Committee; The Greater Des Moines Partnership’s CEO Commitment to Racial Equity in DSM; and the Central Place Business Association. His business dealings show that he is very fair in labor negotiations, and very thorough in contract review, risk management and resource allocations.
Some of his favorite projects include the Iowa Speedway in Newton; the Farm Bureau Financial Services campus; and the EMC Building in downtown Des Moines.

Three MBI general contractors and their respective project teams received the coveted Masters Award, which is given annually to recognize the exceptional efforts of a construction team in executing the process of completing a project.
