Problems found in the Diagonal Avenue, the following scenarios were identified: _ Section and the mix of activities in the same space. _The different flow speeds (pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle). _The pedestrian needs more security in their environment and living spaces. _ Bicycles threaten pedestrians, creates insecurity to be surrounded by such users. _Vehicles with rails high and low speeds, and amid this pedestrians and bicycle users. _The monotony of the trees in this part of the diagonal. _Bananas are on the verge of death, so we propose to substitute Western bananas. Concept 1_New section for the Diagonal _propose improvement different rates of use of the route (Tourist, pedestrian and cyclist). 2_Create a route for tourist, called “Gaudí route”, marked by unique elements located on the Diagonal, between Passeig de Gracia and Carrer de Lepan. 3_Create a new shade pattern: 5 years: 40% 20-30 years: 80% 4_Generate a Water Retaining Surface system thru all the Diagonal 11% non-permeable (27.630m2) 89% permeable (149.370m2)

And enlarged the sidewalk areas. This is divided into two sections : _Flow This section is for the constant movement of the user. Without any interference by another user. This is going to have a non-permeable soil type. _To be In this section we crete a more habitable space for the user where you can stay and rest. This has different uses and activities along the diagonal. Its soils are permeable ( mainly grass and bricks on saulo ) . In which has trees planted along the diagonal. in this case ( Platanos and Quercus ilex) . And some herbaceous edge to collect and clean the water coming from the diagonal avenue . All Street worked with pervious concrete to miss all this ground water. this consists of 4 lanes each side (one for bus and 3 for vehicles ) . With a bike path on the middle.

The triangular areas work as an unifier of the project, in which we use Sauló and permeable floor which allows to absorb more water into the subsoil in these spaces. The same happens with the permeable sitting spaces. The system is based in recollecting the water from the buildings. This water is going to be recycle for irrigating the bushes, grasses and trees that are planted in the sidewalk. The rain water falling on the street is directed to permeable areas, like the water of the buildings will be used for watering plants.

The bike path is located in the middle of the diagonal avenue, which is limited by herbaceous vegetation at the edges of the central axis and a plantation of Albizia every 20m for shade protection bicycle user. “LAS GLORIAS” EVA CARRIÓN, Ingeniero forestal, España CAROLINA CHICAIZA, Arquitecta, Ecuador FIORELLA SCHIAVO, Arquitecta, Italia

The studied area is located between Carrer Lepant and Poblenou Avenue where there is Glorias Square, which is a breaking point because of confluence of three of the main axes of Barcelona. In the area we can find different characters in social and architectural terms. In addition, due at the fact that these elements interrupt the regularity of the urban tissue of Barcelona, in this area we can find many residual spaces that we considered as opportunities spaces in order to create a new centrality. So that, we define an area of intervencion of 3x4 blocks. We decided to take off the roundabout connection in the middle of this area considering that this is a bad infrastructure in visual terms. We propose that Gran Via Avenue goes underneath and the traffico coming from Diagonal and Meridiana Avenues goes around the new central park of Barcelona. The materials taked out during the excavation of the tunnel will be used in the projecto to change the topography where needed. Nevertheless public transport remains where it is.

We want to establish a very clear continuity along the Diagonal Avenue, but in the case of the park is goingo to be just for pedestrians and bike users. This path is going to be connected also with other track typologies such as mixted use pavement areas and only peatonal paths.

Due at the topography of the place we found that we have collecting areas in the north part and runoff areas in the south part.

According to the solar chart we take into account that we have a south part with more solar exposition but also with more shadows from the buildings, and a noth part that during the summer could have some problems due at the lack of shadow.

We identified that we have in the northern part a smaller pattern than in the south part because the nort is mainly a residential area and the south is more an institutional area with big scale buildings. The idea that came out from this is that also the park in some way has to reflect on this duality of scale, the most residencial and intimate one and the public, cultural and touristic one.

With the aim of reflect the scale of the surroundings areas into the park, we look at the grid of the blocks and we found out someones that still have as singluar trace due at the presence of “rec comptal, which is an historic irrigation system in Barcelona. We took some of this blocks with different combinations of grids and reinterpretate them into the project area according to the density criteria founded before, so in the northern part the pattern is more divided than in the southern one, and taking from the block the lines used for the construction of the project.

Result of the definition of different kinds of patterns

Water system

Urban agriculture

Vegetation

Pavements

Final concept: pattern + water + urban agriculture + vegetation + pavements + grass

In the project we are also using water in different scales. In the northern part of the Diagonal we collect water for the irrigation of the agricultural gardens, then the water goes into a phytodepuration process in order to be re-used again in the gardens. In the southern part the scale of water elements is bigger, even if not always in form of visible water surface. In this part we have a different kind of phytodepuration, with more presence of trees, that, thanks to some modifications in the topography, is collecting water from both sides and a water visible element (already existing) that is part of DHUB project.

According to our idea of different scales we have a big scale interventions with trees (one with biggest trees and more density and one with a very strong regularity) in the south.

We used in the project a palette of trees that is considering the adptability of species in this city also according with the possible increase of temperature in the following years. So we pick trees fitting to the current climatic situation but also with an hotter one.
