Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi kusama was born on 22 March 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano. She is a Japanese contemporary artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation, but is also active in painting, performance, video art, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other arts. Her work is based in conceptual art with a mixture of attributes from feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. She has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan. Yayoi Kusama was raised in Matsumoto, and trained at the Kyoto City University of Arts in a traditional Japanese painting style called Nihonga. Kusama was inspired, however, by American Abstract impressionism. She moved to New York City in 1958 and was a part of the New York avant-garde scene throughout the 1960s, especially in the pop-art movement. Embracing the rise of the hippie counterculture of the late 1960s, she came to public attention when she organized a series of happenings in which naked participants were painted with brightly coloured polka dots. Since the 1970s, Kusama has continued to create art, most notably installations in various museums around the world. MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Kusama has been open about her mental health. She says that art has become her way to express her mental problems. She explained in an interview she did with Infinity Net, "I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieved my illness is to keep creating art. I followed the thread of art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live.” Kusama’s works are influenced deeply by her experiences. In her flower series, Yayoi often painted the background with full black or dark colors. This characteristic is influenced by her adolescent years particularly during World War II. During that time, she worked at a military factory and due to the ongoing war, the factory are often covered in darkness to avoid bombing and attack. In the midst of this darkness, she often painted flowers with a dark background. Yayoi symbolizes flowers as love, vitality, life and death. She depicted these flowers with strong and vibrant colors, creating a contrast and dimension to the work. Moreover, Yayoi is well known to be the master of repetition, where she sees the world full of polka dots and lines, here we see her signature infinity net in the background and on the flowers, and her signature polka dot along the flower’s stems and leaves. To complete the painting, Yayoi used small repetitive lines to add detail on the flowers leaves and the middle stem. This original hand-drawn one-of-one painting of Yayoi Kusama is signed, dated, and titled on the back side with Yayoi’s handwriting, and is accompanied with a certificate from Yayoi Kusama Studio in Japan.

Qi Baishi

He was one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese painters. His original name is Qi Huang and courtesy name Weiqing . Baishi (“white stone”) is one of his pseudonyms. Some of Qi’s major influences include the Ming dynasty artist Xu Wei and the early Qing dynasty painter Zhu Da . The subjects of his paintings include almost everything, commonly animals, scenery, figures, vegetables, and so on. In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimps, or birds. Qi Baishi is particularly known for painting shrimps. Born to a peasant from Xiangtan , Hunan, Qi Baishi became a carpenter at fourteen, and it was largely through his own efforts that he became adept at the arts of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal-carving. In his forties, Qi Baishi began traveling and looking for more inspiration. He came upon the Shanghai School, which was very popular at the time, and met Wu Changshuo who then became another mentor to him and inspired a lot of his works. Another influence of Qi Baishi came about fifteen years later, as Qi became close to Chen Shizeng after he settled down in Beijing. What is unique about Qi is that his works show no western influences, unlike most other artists at this time. Other artists praised Qi for the “freshness and spontaneity that he brought to the familiar genres of birds and flowers, insects and grasses, hermit-scholars and landscapes” His prodigious output reflects a diversity of interests and experience, generally focusing on the smaller things of the world rather than the large landscape. Shrimps, fish, crabs, frogs, insects, and peaches were his favorite subjects. Using heavy ink, bright colors, and vigorous strokes, he created works of a fresh and lively manner that expressed his love of nature and life. In 1953 Qi Baishi was elected to the president of the Association of Chinese Artists. He was active to the end of his long life and served briefly as the honorary president of the Beijing Academy of Chinese Painting, which was founded in May, 1957. He died in Beijing on September 16, 1957.

Zhang Daqian

In the early 1920s, Zhang started pursuing professional studies in Shanghai, where he studied with two famous artist, Zeng Xi and Li Ruiqing . His elder brother Zhang Shanzi, who was a famous painter at the time, brought him to a literary salon in 1924 where his appearance impressed the attendants. His first exhibition of 100 paintings was in 1925 at Ningbo Association in Shanghai. In the late 1920s and 1930s, Zhang moved to Beijing where he befriended other famous artists, including Yu Feian, Wang Sensheng, Ye Qianyu, Chen Banding, Qi Baishi, and Pu Xinyu ,. Zhang had collaborated with Pu on painting and calligraphy. At the time, there was an idiom “Zhang from the south, Pu from the north ”for those two of the most renowned artist in China. There was also a saying that Zhang was “southern counterpart of Pu Xinyu in shan-shui painting, Qi Baishi in flower-and-bird painting, and Xu Cao in figure painting” In the 1930s he worked out of a studio on the grounds of the Master of the Nets Garden in Suzhou. In 1933, while an exhibition of modern Chinese paintings organized by Xu Beihong was held in Paris, France, and Zhang's exhibited painting "Golden Lotus " was purchased by the French government. In 1935, he accepted the invitation from Xu Beihong to be a professor at National Central University Art Department in Nanjing. In the same year, his portfolio was published in Shanghai. In 1936, his personal exhibition was held in the United Kingdom. In the early 1940s, Zhang led a group of artists in copying the Buddhist wall paintings in the Mogao and Yulin caves. In order to copy the inner layer of the multilayered murals in the Mogao Caves, Zhang removed and damaged several outer layers of the paintings in Cave 108, 130 and 454. In 1943, he exhibited his copies of murals and supported the establishment of the Dunhuang Art Institute, the predecessor of the Dunhuang Research Academy. In 1945, Zhang's works, as a part of a UNESCO's touring contemporary art exhibition, were shown in Paris, London, Prague and Geneva. In the late 1950s, his deteriorating eyesight led him to develop his splashed color, or pocai, style, which combines abstract expressionism with traditional Chinese styles of painting. In the 1970s, he mentored painter Minol Araki. In 1957, Zhang Daqian was invited to hold exhibitions in The Louvre and Musée Guimet in Paris, where Picasso was also holding a show. Zhang seized this opportunity to meet him. Picasso was delighted to meet Zhang and even asked him to criticize his Chinese paintings. Zhang directly told Picasso that he did not have the right brushes to do Chinese art. Ten years later, Picasso received a gift from Zhang– two Chinese writing brushes made from the hair of 2500 threeyear-old cows. In 1978 the artist settled in Taipei, Taiwan. His residence, Moye Jingshe , next to the National Palace Museum, is now the Memorial Museum of Zhang Daqian. MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Wen Hsi was an artist, an academician and a gallerist. He studied art at the Shanghai College of Art in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and became an art teacher at The Chinese High School and taught there from 1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observant of nature. Almost everything can be the master’s inspiration to create exciting work namely, landscapes, human figures and animals. Chicken, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen His’s constant eagerness to strike for something new led him to learn finger painting – a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has enabled him to produce unpredictable broken stroke on paper. Besides Chinese brush painting, Wen Hsi also produced abstract compositions in oils and Chinese inks of which his paintings showed a strong influence of analytical Cubism and Fauvism with non-naturalistic and exuberant colours. This style has heightened the vividly expression and exoticism of Southeast Asia. Chen painted ceaselessly through his life. Numerous solo and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognised. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. 20

Affandi preferred to call himself a tukang gambar,, a drawer, as opposed to a Pelukis, or partner and approach paint as a form of drawing relinqushing the formal properties of the medium, and allowing the supremacy of the movement of the hand and the creation of a vibrant network of lines. Affandi's painting dominated with a strong and distinctive characther build in humanistic point of view. He was a very intuitive and emotional painter, and his work were heartfelt expressions. He only painted what he observed and never approached his work from any kind of philosophical or analytical starting point. Affandi's interest in humanity made him learned a lot about the anatomy of human body in the beginning of his career. He had developed his mature style of selfportraits by the early 1950s. The significant and distingushed works from Affandi was his strong lines, expressive gestural scribbles and spontaneous. He did not ornament figures, the lines were producent by his technique squeezing the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, using his fingers and palms to direct the medium over its surface and never mixed his colours. He approached paint as a medium in the same way that he did for pencil and charcoal, subduing the suble modalities of colour to the movement of the hand and the creation of line. Affandi ofter painted his self -portrait with people in his inner cicrle. He painted among others his families, his friends, his collectors, his house and his favorite objects. Affandi had close relationship with Sudjojono. After finishing his primary school. Affandi went to study at the MULO ( Junior High School ) in Bandung. He took his senior high school in Jakarta and stayed with the family of Joedhokoesoemo ( father of painter Kartono Joedhokoesoemo and step father of S. Sudjojono ). Sudjojono introduced oil painting to Affandi. Most Indonesian artist in the early Twentieth Century Were influenced by the concept of realism brought by Sudjojono or what we call "Sudjojono's Realism", and Affandi was not exception. Though Affandi was a Realist especially during 19301950, his painting were more clearly delineated and expresive. In 1933, Affandi married with Maryati in Jakarta, The married couple lived in the house of Sudjojono's parents in sunter where Affandi was abie to paint at ease. Since then, Affandi and S. Sudjojono become a close relatives. 30

Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of portraits of beautiful women, he is also noted for his natural beauty and sensuous landscape, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. Basoeki likes to paint anything beautiful. Flamboyant flowers, women, landscapes, flora and fauna, to the leading figures painted very nicely. He often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting and put it into sketch. Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man fong style”. Doves has become Lee Man Fong’s beloved and sought after works in spite of Goldfishes and other animals such as horses, cockatoos, tigers and dogs. Lee Man Fong’s painting of Doves is noteworthy. Since some forty years ago, his animal themes had made a far reaching accomplishment and recently eagerly sought after in Europe and America. A testimony to his mastery of technique and realization of theme, this painting depicts the world of the doves as peaceful and calm, but at the same time dynamic. The doves in pairs symbolize a good match, which may be further extended to mean “peaceful coexistence. MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

S. Sudjojono is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. His favourite subjects were ordinary Indonesians, depicted with piercing emotional realism, sometimes showing joy, pathos, dignity, and frustration.Quite often his figures inhabit dramatic urban or rural landscapes in an almost epic sense. S. Sudjojono used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes.Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from place that he had seen books or actually visited. Besides landscape, S. Sudjojono also enjoyed painting flowers. Whenever he saw an attractive floral arragement, he would paint it, usually capturing it in a fluid, impressionistic representation. Often he would present it as a more everlasting gift for his wife, Rose, in lieu of giving actual flowers.Sometimes he would immortalize the flowers that Rose received during concert by painting them as soon as they got home. 44

Since 1950s, Srihadi had produced dancing themes as his favorite objects. Among the dancing object comes from a variety of Balinese dances such as Legong, Pendet, Tambulilingan, Kenyar, Janger, Baris, Barong, Mask Dance, etc, and also the dance from Javanese like Bedoyo Ketawang. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers, look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes, but one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of the dancer and the artistic form of the dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of movement and type of costume, all of which imbued with philosophical meaning. Srihadi has explored other aspects of the inner nature of movement besides those of immobility and diffused dynamism. Some lie midway between these two tendencies. He has explored composed movement, such as that practiced in the traditional dance of the Javanese palaces, in particular the Bedoyo Ketawang, which is considered to be the epitome of Javanese refinement. In the paintings on this theme, the fuzzy atmosphere shrouding the figures are gone; rather, the head and limbs are suspended, almost immobile, and drawn with an extreme delicacy, otherwise found only in the artist’s work depicting wayang puppets. Only the cloth moves, slowly drifting along the ground, merging dark violet into black. There is a visual rhythm set up by the inert head and limbs, the color of the headdress, and the casual placement of the hanging white garlands. MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Irina & Andrea is a mother-and daughter duo who collaborates together to produce extraordinary works of art. As self-taught artists, Irina and Andrea explore the world and their ideas from her unique perspective with surrealistic figures and interesting colour expressions. Irina and Andrea’s artistic talents are inherited from Irina’s father, Paulus Suharto (Sie Hoat Ho), a multi-talented artist and a nephew of the late Peter Sie, one of the first Indonesian designers. Andrea went to Indonesian School of Design (Sekolah Tinggi Desain Indonesia) in Bandung, and quit to pursue her career as full-time artist with her mother.
