The Point Defiance-‐Tahlequah ferry is a ferry route across south Puget Sound between the Point Defiance ferry terminal in Tacoma and Tahlequah, Washington on the southern >p of Vashon Island. Since 1951 the only ferries employed on the route have belonged to the Washington state ferry system, currently the largest ferry system in the United States. Point Defiance-‐Tahlequah is the shortest route in the system.

Gig Harbor ~ Thumbnail History Gig Harbor is located on a picturesque Puget Sound bay across Tacoma Narrows from Tacoma. For centuries, the Twa-‐Wal-‐Kut band of the Puyallup Tribe had a longhouse and permanent camp at the head of the harbor. Explorers from the Wilkes Expedi>on discovered the harbor's well-‐hidden opening in 1841 and named it Gig Harbor because they had entered the bay in a small captain's gig.

Three years ago we were in the right place at the right >me. We were here in the Harbor late summer 2012 when one of those “never been on the market” proper>es came up for sale. We immediately fell in love with the view and the possibility of building our dream home in this beau>ful community.

We knew we wanted a Northwest Contemporary home -‐ something that reflected the beauty and warmth surrounding our home site. AZer collabora>ng with Jeanne Gagliano, a local architect and our builder Ma] Maenhout, we came up with a func>onal design that took advantage of the sweeping views of Vashon Island, Point Defiance and Mount Rainier.

The Windswept Weathered Wood siding, paired with stucco and a Corten Steel accent panel, was the perfect combina>on of unique, >meless exterior materials we had been searching for. Island Rock and Water put the finishing touch on our dream home exterior by landscaping our lot with classic Pacific Northwest plants/ shrubs and anchoring the lot with unique wood sculptures that enhance the overall theme.

By far the most difficult decision on this project was the selec>on of the exterior materials. Since all four sides of the house can be clearly seen, it was important for us as homeowners to choose materials that were both aesthe>cally a]rac>ve, and tough enough to hold up to our Pacific Northwest weather. From the minute we were introduced to Windswept Weathered Wood, we knew we wanted to incorporate this beau>ful material into our design.

Once the exterior materials had been chosen, we wanted to incorporate the outside elements into the interior finishes and accents – effec>vely bringing the outside in. A local steel fabricator, Honan Custom Metal, craZed the handmade pivot front door, the massive hot-‐rolled steel fireplace and the beau>ful steel staircase. The gorgeous wide plank, wood flooring from Avant Garde flooring adds the interior warmth we were looking for. Contemporary custom cabinetry from Signature Design and Cabinetry, seen throughout the home, serves to >e the interior color pale]e together.

It has been a wonderful, exci>ng journey building our custom dream home. We have been blessed to have had a wonderful contractor who helped us achieve our vision and a whole host of highly skilled, local ar>sans work with us on every aspect of our project. We couldn’t be more excited to call this our home and look forward to living here for years to come!
