A dynamic demonstration begins and ends with a troupe of martial artists working together like a well-oiled machine. Reyes trains his performers from day one as if they were a precision-drill team. “When my team enters the arena they look like a drill squad,” says Reyes. “We don’t just walk in and stand around waiting for the music to start. We establish a certain power of presence. With just that discipline alone, we have captivated the audience from the start.” Although the demo team is a unit of one with a bunch of different arms, legs and heads moving in perfect harmony with one another, every show needs at least one star. “When I started the team, I wanted to find someone that was a standout showman who could be a role model of excellence,” Reyes explains. “So, you need to fi st find a student that can execute your curriculum with a high level of excellence, showing speed, power and concentration. At the beginning, Reyes Sr. didn’t have to look any further than his own son, Ernie Reyes. Jr. At age seven, he was a superstar in the making. “I was training him ever since he could walk,” laughs Reyes today. “He had the drive and the talent and the techniques, but he had something else you can’t teach, charisma. The crowd loved him.” Along with Ernie Jr., another budding star emerged. Already a national champion, Cynthia Rothrock moved thousands of miles across the country to train with Reyes, in a quest to improve her already considerable skills. She added her soon-to-be-famous name as a martial arts film s ar to the team’s roster of talent. “Cynthia kind of invited herself on the team, but she was an incredible person to work with,” Reyes recalls fondly. “She was already a champion in forms and fightin . Lots of times, people at that level can have egos, but not Cynthia. She had a good work ethic, a good heart and an open mind.” “I was in awe of their demonstration team,” Rothrock says today. “Back then, they were the only team that really put on a show. Everything was so flash . So, I was very honored to be part of the team. “Training with them defini ely made me up my game. Even though I was number one at the time in national forms, Reyes had a special energy that rubbed off on m . Training with him greatly improved my kicks.” Rothrock fearlessly launched her acting career in the rugged, bone-breaking arena of Hong Kong action films, the first American female to star in that country’s kung-fu movies. Today, she’s a bona-fide movie s ar known as the “Queen of Kung-Fu Films,” with over 50 big-screen credits, and she’s still actively working. She says that her acting skills were honed by doing those early demo skills with the teams.
