AN INNOVATOR WAY BEFORE HIS TIME “All the teaching innovations we have now, Mike Genova was doing them 40 years ago.” So says Atlanta’s Keith Vitali, an innovator in his own right, and the former number-one-rated national semi-contact fighting champion in the U.S. “Genova was always ahead of the curve,” Vitali points out. “For example, remember how most instructors treated the student who came in late to class? They’d say, ‘“You’re late! Give me 20 pushups!’ “Genova, instead, would ask, ‘Why are we punishing an eight-year-old? He didn’t drive himself to class!’” Vitali recalls. He points out that Genova’s approach has always been to say something like, “Hey, glad you made it. We’re going to learn some great stuff tonight.” Vitali was there when Genova opened his first school. “I believe Mike is one of the very best instructors in the country,” claims Vitali. “Decades ago, he was determined to teach by positive reinforcement. Of course, that is common today, but it wasn’t back then. He had a poster in his school listing the things expected of students before they tested for rank. It cited things like obeying parents and teachers, getting good grades, and so on. “Mike has never been in it for the money,” Vitali adds. “He probably gives away more scholarships than anyone in the country. If a child comes in with the right attitude and wants to learn karate, but, for whatever reason, the family can’t afford it, Mike will offer a scholarship. He could probably double his income with contract agreements, but he doesn’t care. And the thing is, he’s still one of the most financially successful owners anywhere.” Vitali and Genova put together one of the early anti-bullying programs that was expanded into public schools and the community. “No one is more integrated into the community than Mike,” Vitaly concludes. “Everyone knows him. If you go anywhere with Mike, people will come up to say how much they and their kids have benefited from his teaching and his community involvement.”
