“ THE TIN Y SEED K NE W THAT IN ORDER TO GROW, IT NEEDED TO BE DROPPED IN DIRT, COVERED IN DARK NESS, STRUGGLE TO RE ACH THE LIGHT.” — SANDRA KRING —

AT THE BEGINNING. SMALL. It seems to be an impossible journey. Starting so small and ending a part of something so much grander. Greater. Becoming more, being challenged, and glad of the change. Adapting and pushing. Transforming. Learning to embrace the struggle. All from such humble beginnings. But that’s how every journey begins. A cottonseed falls and finds itself in the dirt. It struggles for its survival. Water, light, minerals… time. In an endless field, just one of many. Billions of seeds in the same struggle, on the same journey. The seed survives and thrives. It’s harvested. Distributed. The cotton is purchased; it is culled, woven, cut, sewn. A uniform is made, one of many. An order is placed, and on the truck it goes. Packaged, shipped, delivered, opened. A student, a child, wears their first uniform and finds themselves on the mat. They struggle at first. They stand in their class, just one of many. Millions of students on the same journey. They train and learn. They grow. It seems to be an impossible journey. Starting so small and ending a part of something so much grander. Greater. Becoming more, being challenged, and glad of the change. Adapting and pushing. Transforming. Learning to embrace the struggle. All from such humble beginnings. But that’s how every journey begins. At the beginning. Small.

THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN. BUT THAT IS THE NATURE OF ALL THINGS. THERE IS ALWAYS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN. The students standing on the mat, standing in front of their instructor. They’re in their gear, wondering if they’re ready. They need to be dedicated. They face challenges with every lesson, with every moment. What is new? What is difficult? What is the right way? They learn. They learn that the answers are challenging in their own right. They lead to more questions. More challenges. More excitement. More change. They lead to the constant reminder that there is always more. For anyone, it’s scary. For the dedicated… it’s fun. Of course learning is scary. That’s the point of it all. To challenge yourself. To challenge what you know. What you think you know. What you always knew, only to have it all destroyed and rebuilt with each lesson learned. With every step of the journey, you find out you knew nothing. Nothing compared to what’s ahead. And what’s ahead requires more challenge. More dedication. And it always will. But that’s okay. Standing in front of their instructor, the student is ready. Ready and eager for challenge. For change. They’re dedicated. It’s fun to be dedicated. To be scared, and to persevere. To find those answers. To find the new questions. To learn. There is so much to learn. But that is the nature of all things. There is always so much more to learn.

NUMBERS DON’T LIE.

Math is the language of the universe, and there’s no debating it. That’s what makes it so beautiful. The order of it. The truth of it. From Aristotle to now, it’s the bedrock of all philosophy and the father of modern science: things are either true or they’re not. You either get results, or you don’t. And you just can’t argue with results. That’s what we care about: Results. Good ones. The best. We accept nothing less. And we don’t just test, we invest in testing. Our commitment to quality control is so rigorous that our Quality Control (QC) will tenaciously QC themselves. When the rest of us are on holiday, they are running the numbers on the numbers. When they see the industry standard says a maximum of 10 ppm, then they knock it down to 5. By their account, to merely meet standards is to fail them. Their goal is to always exceed any standard, any goal. No exceptions. And we don’t argue; they get results. They keep everything in perfect order. They have absolute dominion over their universe, and it… is… beautiful. After all, the math is on their side. And numbers don’t lie.

INTERESTED IN OUR TESTING? A variety of Century headgear models have been independently tested at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. Search HGCERT on our website and learn more about our rigorous Quality Standards.

STUDENT

AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING. IT’S MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS. You need numbers, sure. That’s just math. But you need more. The heart of it. You need the how, yes, but you need the where, the why. And, perhaps above all else, you need the who. We make belts, right? Good ones? No, great ones. But that’s just the math. How? We work meticulously to meet (no, exceed) any standard and at the same quality. But you already knew that. Just more math. You need more. Where is the heart? Where? Here, that’s where. Here? The USA. No...where? More specific. Where in the USA? Oklahoma. Where in Oklahoma? Oklahoma City. All within our warehouse in the city. That’s right. At the heart of the heart of the heart of the country. That’s our home. Why? Why does anyone keep anything that close? Because we care. Actually care. We need to know everything, not just the numbers. When a belt gets sewn, we need to know who’s doing it. That they care as much as we do. Here, right in Oklahoma. On the floor, right now—Now, as these keys strike these letters into these words—Lavonne is sewing belts. And she has been doing it for 26 years. She cares. Actually cares. And she is next to a whole crew, day after day, right here in the USA. In Oklahoma. In the capital of this great state. In house. At home. At the heart of everything.

ONE OF MANY.

Pick one out of the crowd, out of millions, and you have a story. A journey. A journey that would surprise you. So surprising, that you soon realize that the word “exceptional” doesn’t hold that meaning that you’ve come to know. The power of a person’s journey, their story, is not an exception to life, it’s the rule. Narrow that down to Century, to our family here in Oklahoma; you won’t be surprised. Meet Robert Campbell. Specifically, Rob. Get too formal with him and his signature booming laugh will set you right. Rob started his journey with Century, as any journey begins: small. In the bag-finishing department of Manufacturing, Rob built equipment utilized by thousands everyday. It wasn’t long before he was a leader in the department, always driving others to excel and smile doing it. Quickly, multiple departments were vying for Rob to join their own part of the crew. He has since become the Associate Product Manager of Merchandising; equipment ranging from uniforms to sparring gear originate from his direction. And, all of this, more impressively, was accomplished simultaneously with his martial arts advancement. During his time at Century, Rob has become a 7th degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo. He owns, operates, and instructs a traditional Kung Fu Soo San school which passes on the teaching of Jimmy H Woo he learned from his Masters Ralph A Latimer and Richard Dinsmore to a new generation; he is (and will, knowing him) on track to be granted Mastery in Kung Fu. But we aren’t surprised. We’ve been privileged to know him, and our lives are better for it. His martial arts mastery is impressive, but that’s just another step on his journey. And in the grand scheme of his life, a small one. One of many.

BECOME MORE. MOVE FORWARD. From such humble beginnings, once on a mat, alone among so many others; the student, always the student, has grown. Is always growing. Becoming more. Moving forward. It seemed an impossible journey, all those years ago. But the others were there, on the same journey, moving forward. Always growing. Becoming more, being challenged, and glad of the change. On that same journey, the others are there. No... it was others, but not anymore. They are one. Together, they work. They train. They’re dedicated. Not just to the sport. Not just to the art. Not just to themselves… to each other. They’re accountable. Obligated to stay dedicated. To show that dedication to their own trials; to strengthen others and be made strong in return. The afraid might beg for help, but the foolish turn it away. And they are no fools. They are each just one of many, and together they have struggled. Teamwork, training, dedication… time. They survived and thrived. They were challenged. Challenged to adapt; to evolve. To become more, and be glad of the change. Honing and never breaking. They sharpen each other. Never too proud to fail. To fail and try again. To stay dedicated. Always learning. Through their connection, they master their sport, their art, themselves… as a team. Moving forward. Becoming more.

A TIME OF CHALLENGE. But that’s what it takes. Challenge to persevere. After all, what does it mean to persevere without challenge. Without adversity. To endeavor and strive and withstand… nothing… is nothing at all. Adversity makes us what we are. Time is a driving hammer swung with every moment. With every heartbeat. And adversity is its anvil. Many crack and crumble. Strong steel is purified by the hammer. Doubt, shame, fear… weakness. These are not the ingredients for forging; they need to be driven out. It is so unfortunate that so many had to deal with so much, only to find that their spirits were as brittle as the broken promises they made to themselves. And then, with all that, connections were broken, isolation mandated, and the support structure of everyone was compromised. It was more than doubt. More than shame and fear. More than mere weakness. What was normal had become a faded memory. Even the dedicated have their limits. But not you. You’re stronger. Made of stronger stuff. Steel on steel. Unbreakable. You. The forged product of unforeseen trials and tribulations. The proven spirit made stronger still by adversity. By a time fraught with difficulty and hardship. By a challenge to persevere. But you knew that’s what it takes. What it takes to be strong. A time of challenge. And we know, here on this side of the equipment, the combat, the stories, and the philosophy, on this side of our world of dedication, that we could not have made it without you. You who have inspired us. Thank you. 34

TRAIN... STAY DEDICATED. SAID WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY. They can do this. It’s more than a hobby now… if it ever was just a hobby. After all, it’s a part of their life. It is a part of who they are. They train because it makes them better… no, it’s more than that. That’s the result, but it’s deeper. They train because they’re dedicated. It could have been anything, and the training would have been there. The dedication. It’s fun to be dedicated. That’s where it lies. The dedication. Staying dedicated. Training. Still a student. There are traditions. Evolutions. New traditions. And new evolutions. They are always learning. But, that is the nature of all things. Maybe that’s the hard truth of it. The fun of it. They realize that they will always be a student. They will always learn. So much to learn. So much challenge. The sport of learning in and of itself. So they stay dedicated. They test their skills. They compete. Sharpened technique versus even keener opponents. Always working. Always honing. Never ashamed to fail. To fail and try again. To stay dedicated. To train. Others seek their guidance. They face challenges with every lesson, with every moment. What to tell them? What is new? What is difficult? What is the right way? What to say? They are still on a journey with lessons learned everyday and with great difficulty. What can they offer another? What can they say with any confidence of truth? Of authority? The only thing they know with absolute certainty: Stay dedicated. Train.

Made in America. Said by so many, even when it isn’t really true. Or not true enough, at least. Made in America is not just some empty phrase; it has weight. So much is implied by those three words—three word phrases tend to work that way. More than the words themselves, but in between the words. Beyond just… made here…. Made by Americans. Made by us. Made by people we know. People who care; people who care for each other. People working toward the same goals, and not just in-house; people at home. Where the heart is, you know? You know. We started in a one-car garage, and we became larger than we could have imagined. But that never changed who was making, testing, and living the work. So, we will say it. Those three words with weight and care. And when we do, you know we mean it. Today, here in the heart of the country, what we make is made here. Made in America.

IN A ROOM WITH A MIRROR AND A MAT. A SMALL START FOR ANY JOURNEY, BUT THAT’S HOW EVERY JOURNEY BEGINS. SMALL. Everyone is on a journey, and that journey starts somewhere. Your first step, the hardest step, walking into the unknown doesn’t need to be made alone. And maybe that’s what scares people the most. So many people, those people on the same journey, who would walk with them… they’ve already started. It’s hard to start on your first step when you know the others are miles ahead. But there is a trick… they aren’t. Yes, they’re still students (and always will be), but you knew that. No, they aren’t miles ahead of you. They’re miles into their journey. And that makes all the difference. You come upon them, upon the path. You see them on their journey as you take your first step. That crucial step. And you take to the path, and walk beside them. They may be far into their journey, but they are right there with you. You want to join them. And there’s the rub. It’s all too common to be new and want the guidance of the experienced. The camaraderie of other journeymen. But what is rarer is finding those on the path. After all, there will always be more who are new, than there are those who are masters. It’s the nature of the way things work. That’s why we have the room. The room with the mirror and the mat. That’s why we will always have it. No matter where life takes us, or how big it gets. There will always be the room. Century wasn’t just founded by a well-known multi-disciplinary master—one quick internet search will enlighten you on that, if you’ve been caught unaware. Lesser known is that the building, right here in our home, is full of dedicated artists (martial or otherwise); many of which are verifiable masters of their craft. Masters who take their role as the perpetual student seriously. And, further still, students who mastered (and even began that journey toward mastery) right here in house. Students who recognized that they were on a journey and had a whole team of fellow travellers who are proud to walk beside them. All starting in the center of that Oklahoma warehouse. In the room. The room with the mirror and the mat.

MASTER

A NEW BEGINNING. STARTING AGAIN ON A NEW JOURNEY. STARTING SMALL. They find themselves on a mat. Their mat in their school. They stayed dedicated. They trained. Having mastered so much, through teamwork, training, dedication… time. A master of their sport, their art, themselves… but still a student. Always a student. There is alway so much more to learn. It seems to be an impossible journey. Starting over so small and ending a part of something so much grander. Greater. Becoming more, being challenged, and glad of the change. Adapting and pushing. Transforming. Learning to embrace the struggle. Just one of many. All from such humble beginnings. Dedicated to continuing the journey. Teaching and learning in return. But where to start? What to say? Will they know the right way? So they start small. A student needs to be ready. Ready to face the struggles they faced so long ago; the struggles they will face again. And again. And again. And so an order is placed. A cottonseed falls and finds itself in the dirt. It seems to be an impossible journey. But that’s how every journey begins. At the beginning. Small.

MIKE DILLARD FOUNDER, CENTURY MARTIAL ARTS 9TH DEGREE BLACK BELT, K ANG DUK WON

ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. THE FIGHTERS BEFORE US. FIGHTERS WITH IRON WILLS. It took strength. It took grit and fortitude. You needed to have iron. It may be hard to picture, things having been so different for so long, but the rules were different then. No gloves, no helmets, no mercy. Competition was brutal and unforgiving. One slip, no matter the style or technique, and your opponent was ready to punish you. They called it the “grab and punch” days. Savage, simple, and to the point. If they got a hold of the lapel, if they got one grab of your gi… you get the idea. In that time of brutality and fervor, gis along with the bodies that occupied them took a lot of punishment. Necessity is the mother of invention, and people needed their uniform to be made of tougher stuff and suit any artform, any combat. Champions like Ron Tripp, Chuck Norris, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, Roger Greene, and Mike Dillard needed their gis to withstand the rigors of combat at the apex of competition. Against the toughest opponents. That’s what we made with function over form; durability above all else. All those years ago, the ultimate gi was made for the giants upon whose shoulders we now stand. And now a new generation of fighters takes up the mantle. The mantle of grit and determination against the most exacting standards and trials of competition. It needed to be tough, as they were, but the Ironman still can only hold strong as long as the fighter that wears it. After all, a gi needs a fighter, but a fighter needs a will of iron.

THE CHAMPION

RETURNS

In 1990, the original Ironman hit shelves as the durable answer to the punishing combat of the time. Its thick, heavy weave made it stronger, resistant to wrinkling and less likely to rip or tear in the heat of competition. Today, we’ve re-introduced the Ironman gi. Like before, it is made with high-quality fabric, now reengineered with modern standards and new features for the new generation of fierce competitors.

FORWARD THINKING. AGENTS OF PROGRESS. That is what we should all strive to be. Without the desire for change, when comfort brings weakness, the ability to advance is suppressed. Traditions should be recognized and respected, but breaks from those traditions are rewarding and require courage. No one knows they are stuck in the stone age until someone shows them iron. At Century, we do believe in reinventing the wheel. Everyone should. After all, how well would a Ferrari drive on wagon wheels? The danger of the status quo is it stultifies the imagination. It is the enemy of innovation. “Good enough” is not good enough. No clearer example is our introduction of the freestanding bag and the first of its kind, the original Wavemaster. Before that, no one had moved beyond the classic, the traditional, hanging heavy bag, because no one knew they needed to. They had not seen the iron. Stone was all they knew. It is because of that danger, the complacent comfort of what works “good enough,” that we have always pledged to respect the centuries of tradition, but we will always find the ways to break from them. To find the iron where others see stone. To be agents of progress. To think forward.

YOU’VE MADE IT THIS FAR. TAKE THAT NEXT STEP. Whenever it seems impossible; like that next hill on the horizon is just too far... Take that next step. Just another step in the journey. The journey that doesn’t end and never really gets any easier. But that’s okay; it doesn’t have to. You wouldn’t want it to anyway. With every lesson learned and every hardship conquered, the path only gets longer as you grow to see further down its horizon. And you wouldn’t have it any other way. Always the student; always learning. The destination is an inflection point, where the journey simply continues. It’s the nature of all things, and you don’t deny the truth. You don’t run from it. You walk with it. Challenges, changes, and obstacles… you meet them, you adapt, you overcome. And you do it in stride. And with your example, so do we. Right by your side. Together, on this never-ending journey, with the horizon growing before us, we will meet, adapt, and overcome every obstacle, change, and challenge. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Whenever it seems impossible; like that next hill on the horizon is just too far... We will take that next step. After all, we’ve made it this far.
