How long have you been teaching? I started helping with classes when I was around 12 years old, but wasn’t a paid instructor until I was 15. I’m currently 32 years old. How long have you owned your school? I opened Knoxville Academy of Martial Arts on April 1st, 2011. Why did you begin teaching martial arts? My love of martial arts started when I was around four or five years old and was able to take a free lesson at a school in Atlanta. After moving to Knoxville, I grew up in the dojo and was either taking classes or helping, if I was allowed. I have always had a passion for the martial arts and enjoy sharing that passion with others! What is your school’s motto or student creed? Our motto is, “Building the individual, Strengthening the family, Bettering the community — one belt at a time.” We also have a karate creed we say at the beginning of class and a black belt creed we say at the end of every class.
What do you find most rewarding about working in the martial arts? I love seeing those great athletes come in and excel. But what I find most rewarding is having that one student that works his/her tail off and accomplishes something they didn’t think was possible. That’s whether it’s earning a new belt, winning in a tournament or seeing their parents be proud of them. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. What is your favorite inspirational quote? “Live the life you love; love the life you live.”
What is your personal teaching philosophy? To teach each class as if it’s the most important class I will ever teach. Who or what inspires you? There are so many inspirations out there. In the martial arts world, I look at the multi-school owners like the Kovars and am just amazed and the success they have. Within my school, every single student inspires me to be my personal best for each of them. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do and I am so thankful for each of them.
If you could give one bit of advice to fellow martial arts school owners, what would it be? Be humble, stay hungry and always be the hardest worker in the room.
What is something unique that your school or your student body does well? While we teach great classes, it’s our dedication to our students, their families and our community that truly sets us apart. We are all family, and we strive to be part of the parenting team in every way. We are so proud to be a large, successful school while maintaining that level of intimacy.
