SUZANNE LENGLEN JAZZ AGE TENNIS STAR SUZANNE RACHEL FLORE LENGLEN WAS BORN IN FRANCE IN 1899. BY AGE FIFTEEN SHE WAS ALREADY THE WORLD HARD-COURT TENNIS CHAMPION, EVENTUALLY WINNING THE FRENCH AND WIMBLEDON TITLES SIX TIMES EACH. THE MEDIA DARLING WAS THE FIRST FEMALE TENNIS CELEBRITY AND RARELY SHIED AWAY FROM CONTROVERSY. READ ON FOR FUN FACTS ABOUT THE DARING FRENCHWOMAN IN THE SHORT WHITE SKIRT.
1.
Despite her later athletic prowess, Suzanne grew up suffering from severe asthma. The frail child began training in tennis to build strength.
2.
She was the first female player to expose her forearms and calves, scandalizing the tennis crowd. Her risqué attire? Short, white ensembles designed by Parisian couturier Jean Patou.
5.
Her father would toss Suzanne cognac-soaked sugar lumps from the stands during matches. When she was older she would shock the crowd by sipping from a small, silver flask between sets.
6.
She won her first Wimbledon in 1922 with King George V and Queen Mary watching.
During her seven years on the amateur circuit she lost only one match when she defaulted to the U.S. champion, Mallory, in 1921. Lenglen was sick and dissolved into tears on the court. Americans nicknamed her “Cough and Quit" after she forfeited the controversial match.
She drew such large crowds to her matches that Wimbledon was forced to move to larger stands.
A proud flapper, she wore her hair in a cropped bob with a signature wide scarf.

8.
While touring America Suzanne traveled by train and often suffered insomnia. One night the mischievous athlete swapped all the pairs of shoes that had been placed out for cleaning. “Next morning there was pandemonium."
9.
She often held her interviews over breakfast in her hotel
suite wearing black silk pajamas or a negligee. Needless to say, the press loved her.
10.
The vibrant tennis star died at the young age of 39. She had recently been diagnosed with leukemia and soon thereafter lost her sight. She is buried in the Saint-Ouen Cemetery near Paris. matchbook

BEJEWELED V BEDAZZLED PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA STIMPSON
Jewelry designer Loren Barham knows how to make a head-turning bauble.
Since launching her company, Loren Hope, in 2005, the savvy entrepreneur has
bejeweled stylish women around the globe with her colorful concoctions. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, the thoughtful, young designer has chosen to keep all production in America and prides herself on the expertise of her local craftsman. We paid a visit to Loren's darling New England showroom to get a behind-the-scenes look at the jewelry-designing process.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? DID IT INFLUENCE YOU C R E AT I V E LY ?
I grew up in Willow Spring, North Carolina. It's a small town in the country with lots of farmland. I grew up in a house my father built on five acres of woodland. I do think it influenced me creatively. From the time I could walk, I was always outside. My dad would catch bullfrogs and surprise me. My mom would point out

I went to East Carolina University and studied fine arts. I took some classes in metal smithing and fell in love with working with metal.

My parents instilled in me a sense of wonder for the natural world and always encouraged me to be curious. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME LOREN HOPE?

WHEN DID YOU DREAM UP THE IDEA TO L AUNCH A JEWELRY LINE?
In 2005, I moved to England with my husband, Aaron, who was in the U.S. Air Force at the time and stationed at Lakenheath Air Force Base. shipped to our APO address. I used the tools from my metals classes and started making beaded jewelry at our dining room table. One day, a light bulb went off and I thought, I could sell my jewelry and create a business! I get to be creative and make an income. Loren Hope Designs was born. W H AT I N F L U E N C E D Y O U R DECISION TO KEEP THE M A N U FA C T U R I N G I N T H E U. S . ?
There are many factors for why we have continued to make our pieces here. 48

The main reason is simply a moral decision. By keeping our manufacturing here, we are providing jobs to the local people. We work with vendors in the area, which helps the local economy. I get to meet with the local craftsman. Many of them run family businesses and have knowledge that has been passed down through generations. I hear their stories about the industry and what it used to be when it was thriving, back before outsourcing became the norm. I learn about how things are made and
get to see the machines punching out metal parts. It's gritty and fascinating; my father is a master mechanic and I think I got my love for tools and machinery from him. Our relationships have become dear to me. At the end of the day, it's about connecting with people. It's one of the simplest joys we can have in this life and I'm not sure I would experience the same satisfaction if we took our production overseas. L.A. COOL PHOTOGRAPHY BY BONNIE TSANG
Bubbly, northwest native Emily Henderson has legions of fans from coast to coast. After several years in New York City, the designer, stylist, and newlyminted Target style expert has returned west, settling in Los Angeles. She and her husband, Brian, welcomed a baby boy last December and are currently knee-deep in projects for their first home, a sunny fixer upper in Glendale. When I lived in New York I did a mishmash of things before I landed a job working for Jonathan Adler as a shop girl, back when he had a teeny store in SoHo. A couple years later I discovered that crafting and shopping – I mean "prop styling" – was actually a career. I assisted an amazing stylist named Cindy DiPrima for five years, and she taught me so much.
I think making Zooey Deschanel or Snookie’s place awesome, while still reflecting their personal style, would be a total dream. You embrace the chaos, but always have extra bins around to toss it all out of the way when you need to. YOUR BLOG IS SO R E F R E S H I N G LY H O N E S T A N D I N S P I R I N G . I may have sponsored posts and partnerships, I really have full control of everything. I was an English major and love to write. Sometimes it’s a challenge, especially with the bigger design posts that take time, but I love that my blog is a place to connect with others who love design and style or need guidance. I want everything to be either inspirational or informative. W H AT A R E Y O U M O S T L O O K I N G F O R WA R D T O THIS SUMMER?
Anyone who knows me knows about my hoarding – I mean shopping – addiction, and I love spending time at the flea market. Getting there before 6 a.m., coffee in hand, sun rising…it’s peaceful and exhilarating all at the same time. Now I just need to get Sir Charles to love it as much as I do, and I’ll be in total heaven.

EMILY’S TIPS
on Styling Your Living Room Your living room is where you’re going to spend a lot of time, and where guests will likely hang out as well. A few basics, good light, and a sense of humor go a long way. • Get a sofa you love, because most of the time that’s probably where you’re parking yourself. It might be pink, and that’s fine. • Spend less on the other seating. Because when you have people over, you’re probably not having The Sound of Music marathons. You can find cool chairs with personality at the flea, and Target always has amazing ottomans or poufs. Get multiples and then stack trays on them with drinks to be so chic when all your so chic friends come over. • A rug is crucial. It really does pull everything together. If you find a crazy, colorful one you love, then build out 78

everything else from that color palette, but neutrals are great too. • Did I say something about lighting? It makes you look good and helps you see, so get a mix of floor and table lamps for dimension. I love the Room Essentials lamps because of the price, the cool minimalist look, and the soft colors. • Don’t forget your earrings. Framed photos, weird oneof-a kind art, and decorative accessories add personality, and you don’t have to spend a lot. I bought a painting when I was twenty-four and living in New York without a lot of money, and it’s still one of my favorite things.
