N O T E FROM
Katie + Jane
2014
APRIL The two insanely stylish best friends bonded during their studies at the Massachusetts College of Art and followed their dreams to New York. Their edgy take on fashion accessories has us ready to step up our sartorial game.
What's inspiring us this April? Where do we begin... Jane is drawn to your granny's chintz repurposed in a modern way. Katie's having a boho moment and itching for a Moroccan getaway. And Jordan? She's all about welcoming April showers with style. From the eccentric glamour of Edith Bouvier Beale to the tomboy chic Joanna Zamora of East Surf Company, this month we're all about individuality. Each of the women featured in this issue has embraced 8

their own personal style and we love them all the more for it. Jennifer Stocker of Sail to Sable is purebred prep and we can't help but covet her coastal inspired designs. Her cheery Upper East Side apartment will have you longing for a tropical getaway. Take us with you! Meanwhile in Greenpoint, Jill Martinelli and Sabine Le Guyader of Lady Grey Jewelry design with a sculptural eye.
Last but certainly not least, is our cover girl Kacy Lubell of Letters Lubell. The designs of the master stationer (and mother of two adorable young boys) have us head over heels. From custom dinner party invites to everyday correspondence, Kacy never seems to run out of clever ideas. Did we mention her chic Park Slope abode had us ready to move in? Whether your style is preppy, edgy, or somewhere in between, we hope April's stories inspire you to go with your gut and wear and decorate with things you truly love. Cheers to personal style, KATIE + JANE

PORTRAIT OF A L ADY
1 0 T H I N G S YO U D I D N ' T K N OW A B O U T. . .
EDITH BOUVIER BEALE Born in 1917 in New York City, Edith Bouvier Beale, known to friends as “Little Edie,” was a first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Made famous by the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens the eccentric WASP became an American fashion icon, all while living in East Hampton squalor. She died in 2002 in Bal Harbour, Florida.
1.
Edie’s young life was one of great affluence, frolicking between Manhattan and the Hamptons. In the 1920s, her father bought the family a new twentyeight-room summer home called Grey Gardens.
2.
At age nine she had a poem published in a local magazine inspiring dreams of becoming a writer.
3.
A tall, blue-eyed, blonde, Little Edie was known to be a stunner and modeled for Macy’s while in high school at Miss Porter’s. 20

4.
The young Beale had plenty of suitors. She was courted by business magnate Howard Hughes and, rumor has it, refused a marriage proposal from wealthy industrialist J. Paul Getty.
5.
After her father left her mother (known as Big Edie) for a younger woman, Little Edie and her mother sought refuge at Grey Gardens. The home fell into despair and became overrun with stray cats – some say as many as 300. They named one of the cats Tedsy Kennedy.
6.
Left with no disposable income, Little Edie and her mother often ate cat food to survive.
7.
Both Big and Little Edie harbored dreams of the stage. Big Edie sang opera, while Little Edie loved to sing, act, and dance.
8.
In 1971 when Grey Gardens was deemed unfit for human habitation by county officials, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wrote a check for $25,000 to have the place cleaned up. Her generosity allowed Little Edie and

her mother to remain in the residence.
9.
Edie’s trademark head wraps made from scarves, shirts, and towels were not just a fashion
statement. She had contracted alopecia in her 20s and the scarves hid her hair loss.
10.
After her mother’s death in 1977,
Edie moved back to Manhattan, where she sang cabaret at a Greenwich Village club. She had accomplished her lifelong dream of becoming a star. matchbook

TWO STEPS INTO JENNIFER STOCKER'S COLORFUL APARTMENT ON MANHATTAN'S UPPER EAST SIDE AND YOU'LL BE REACHING FOR A MOJITO. The
perfectly preppy decor is a breath of fresh air– an oasis of Bahamas calm among the city's chaos. It's no surprise that the young and talented fashion designer's clothes are as upbeat as her interior. Before launching readyto-wear label Sail to Sable, the fun-loving Connecticut native spent over six years working in the publishing industry. Now in it's fourth season, Sail to Sable's chic tunics have become a mainstay at beaches on both coasts. We caught up with Jennifer to chat about all things spring, hydrangeas, and Jackie O.

My background at CondĂŠ Nast played a key role in launching Sail to Sable. From event planning to social strategy and marketing platforms, I learned so much from each person I worked for and with. I have taken all that knowledge with me into this next venture.

For footwear in a warm climate, I love my Jack Rogers or Stubbs & Wootton espadrilles. Since it is still a bit cold here in New York, I am sporting my Sail toSable with some Roger Vivier closed-toe flats. I don't wear a ton of jewelry with my Sail to Sable because each piece has so much detail, trim, and embellishment. I keep it pretty simple with pearls or some great Gale Grant clipon earrings. My newest and most important accessory is my engagement ring.

Jill: To most people, living with your business partner probably sounds like the worst idea ever, but for us I think it really helped to build a solid foundation for our partnership and friendship. During those first four years or so we were together constantly. We’ve gone through a lot. We’ve essentially grown up together, and I think you can really see that in the evolution of our collections, as they’ve become more refined and more sophisticated over time.

Having a background like ours is crucial to our execution. W H AT D O E S Y O U R D E S I G N P R O C E S S E N TA I L ?

I’ll be wearing them with statement earrings, like our Lattice Lobe earrings or our fall/winter 2013 Cat-Eye Hoops. Sabine: One of my favorite spots to grab a burger is River Styx. Their special sauce speaks for itself!
Jill: I love Tørst; it’s a beer bar on Manhattan Avenue. They have these tasty Belgian-style sour beers that are my favorite. Five Leaves is probably my go-to food spot. Early breakfast meetings there are a great way to start the day. And digging through the racks at People of Tomorrow – it is a new vintage shop near our studio where I’ve been spending way too much money.
W H AT D O Y O U L O V E M O S T ABOUT YOUR DESIGN STUDIO?
Jill: I love the vibe in here. It’s a workspace not a showroom – it’s loud, sometimes messy, and there is always a lot going on, so there is a strong creative energy. We try to keep a nice balance of personal decorative items within all the machinery and tools, so we are surrounded by the things we love. It’s motivation for the long, dirty work days. W H AT ’ S C U R R E N T LY INSPIRING YOU?
Sabine: Spring is on my mind and I’ve become
fascinated by the paper collages by Mary Delany. She started doing botanically correct collages at the age of seventy-two and produced more than 900 before she died. They are really intricate and beautiful. Jill: Paintings by Melissa Carroll inspire me. W H AT ’ S Y O U R M O S T TREASURED PIECE OF JEWELRY?

Paradise s PARK SLOPE
tationery designer Kacy Lubell is as stylish in person as she is on paper. In 2008, after countless design requests from family and friends, she decided to launch her own luxury stationery company, Letters Lubell, and the rest is letterpress history. Inspired by everything from contemporary children's toys to timeless monograms, each of Kacy's romantic yet modern designs are carefully printed on eco-friendly cotton paper with rubber and soy-based inks. From business cards to birth announcements, Kacy does it all and loyal customers have come to love her bespoke, collaborative approach. Matchbook spent a morning with the stationer (and her sweet pup, Lux) at the sunny Park Slope abode she shares with her husband and their two little boys. Welcome to the impossibly chic world of Lubell. PHOTOGRAPHY BY RIMA BRINDAMOUR

When did you first become interested in graphic design? I’ve been interested in design as long as I can remember. As a kid, if I had colored pencils and a blank pad, I was content. It organically evolved into a love of paper, color, and design. When did you become interested in stationery, in particular? Both my grandmother and mother instilled in me early on the importance of showing your gratitude with a handwritten note. It was a requirement in our household. My grandmother was notorious for finishing her thank-you notes (addressed, sealed, and stamped) just hours after her guests left the party. Are there any other fun stationery traditions they’ve passed down?

enough, I’ll do the same. What was your first design? I designed my first set of stationery for my Bat Mitzvah – bubble-gum pink paper, black shiny ink, and a hand-drawn Roger Rabbit holding a KACY sign. True story!
Amazing! Today, how do you work with clients to develop custom stationery and invitations? I always encourage clients to come to the table with some sort of visual inspiration. It can be anything from a piece of jewelry to a wallpaper swatch to a child’s action figure. I can transform
pretty much anything into paper correspondence! What has been one of your favorite projects? I love designing wedding invitations and birth announcements for my friends and family. In the end, it’s a keepsake – a little piece of history. I love being a part of that. matchbook

Where do you look for new inspiration and ideas? Everywhere! Around the city, at the beach in the summer, or while I’m shopping, traveling, or riding the subway... You have two adorable little boys. Have they inspired any creative projects? Of course! Duke requested a yellow party last year for his third birthday. He came up with a list of yellow things for his invitation. Without his direction I wouldn’t have ended up with an invite that had bananas, trucks, and submarines! We share a love of the handwritten note. On what occasions do you send snail mail? I always send handwritten notes and real paper party invitations. I self-address all envelopes by hand. I never print address labels. I value that tradition. What does your personal stationery look like? Currently, it’s gold-foiled monogram on super thick stock with a border. Simple and stunning. We love your style. What is one of your favorite pieces?

When my second son was only a few months old and we were struggling from sleep deprivation, my husband surprised me at the end of a very long day with a pair of Isabel Marant Dicker booties. Needless to say, I love them.
What Letters Lubell style are you most excited about?
Do you have a go-to piece in your wardrobe?
I see lots of calligraphy, foil, and hopefully some new collaborations with other brands and designers. I’d love to reach a larger audience but still maintain the personal service my clients have come to expect and appreciate.
Chambray shirts. What do you love most about your home? The high ceilings and marble mantles.
I’m over the moon about our new foilstamped note cards. They should be available for order by May 1. Trés chic! How do you hope Letters Lubell will evolve in the future?
