PORTRAIT OF A L ADY

QUEEN ELIZABETH II QUEEN ELIZABETH II OF GREAT BRITAIN (B.1926) ASCENDED TO THE THRONE IN 1953 WHEN SHE WAS ONLY TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OLD. THE ELDER DAUGHTER OF KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MARRIED PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH, WITH WHOM SHE HAS FOUR CHILDREN. IN JUNE 2012, SHE CELEBRATED SIXTY YEARS ON THE THRONE WITH HER DIAMOND JUBILEE. READ ON FOR INTRIGUING TIDBITS ABOUT THE ROYAL MONARCH.
1.
Among the many unique gifts the queen has received are live jaguars and sloths from Brazil. The animals were placed in the London Zoo.
2.
She’s ridden the London Underground, known to locals as the Tube. Elizabeth’s first ride took place in May 1939 with her sister, Princess Margaret, and their governess.
3.
A dog lover, the Queen has owned more than thirty corgis. Her first was Susan, a gift for her eigh-
teenth birthday in 1944. A footman was once reprimanded by the Queen for giving her corgis whiskey.
4.
She has an impressive jewelry collection that includes the largest pink diamond in the world.
5.
She is passionate about horses and racing. Her grandfather, King George V, gave Elizabeth her first pony, a Shetland named Peggy, when she was only four years old.

father to let her join the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. She trained as a mechanic and truck driver, making her the only female member of the royal family to enter the military.
7.
She saved up ration coupons to purchase the material for her wedding dress. The gown was made with ivory satin embellished with 10,000 white pearls.
8.
Though she has visited more than 110 countries, she doesn’t have a passport. She is also permitted to drive without a driver’s license. Her wheels of choice? A Range Rover.
9.
During her reign, Elizabeth has sat for over 120 official portraits. One was a 3-D effect hologram portrait comprised of more than 10,000 tiny images of the Queen.
10.
In 1982 she awoke to find an intruder from a mental hospital sitting on her bed in Buckingham Palace. For over ten minutes the queen calmly chatted with the intruder about his personal problems until a footman seized the unwanted houseguest.

the new registry etiquette
N
avigating the dos and don'ts of the modern wedding registry can be as tricky as crafting the perfect maid of honor speech. Lucky for us, BRIT MORIN, Target’s Wedding Expert, fills us in on the new rules of the registry. Read on for her etiquette tips and gift ideas for engaged couples and wedding guests alike.
1 TIPS FOR BRIDES AND GROOMS-TO-BE
2 26
matchbook
It’s common and acceptable to forgo the formal china, but think about how you actually like to entertain before making your list. If you love summer entertaining, consider stocking your list with outdoor furniture, a grill, and other outdoor essentials. Or if you have a big family and see yourself hosting holiday dinners, you’ll want enough glassware and plates to serve them all.
1
2
Everything on your list should be something you can experience and enjoy together. So clothing and personal items are a nono, but non-traditional gifts – even camping equipment and bikes – are fair game. If you’re all about Scandal bingewatching marathons (like my husband and I are), then register for the big TV and the Sonos speakers. If you’re both travel junkies, essentials like luggage, noisecanceling headphones and a great camera are gifts you can enjoy both on your honeymoon and for years to come.
3
When family and friends visit your home, you should be enjoying your gifts. Gifts should be out of the boxes and used. If you don’t have enough closets and cupboards, think about storage ottomans for things like blankets, pillows, and extra towels.
4
Register early! Not only is it inconvenient for your friends and family to be left guessing about what you’d like, but you might end up with gifts that aren’t reflective of you together as a PRO TIP DON’T BE AFRAID TO MIX AND MATCH YOUR DINNERWARE. IT CAN ACTUALLY CREATE A PLAYFUL AND COLORFUL AESTHETIC ON YOUR TABLE.
3
4 couple, which is what this day is all about!
5
Have a large selection and price range, and remember not all of your guests may shop online. Make sure everyone can access your registry. I like Target because guests can go to Target.com/Registry, use the mobile app, or pick up a gift during their weekly run to the store.
6
The rule on thankyou notes isn’t going anywhere. You should write thankyou notes immediately after receiving gifts, no exceptions! And as much as I love high-tech options for most things, handwritten notes are still a must for this category.

AND A FEW TIPS FOR WEDDING GUESTS 5
1
Going off registry is acceptable as long as it’s complementary to the couple’s registry picks. If a couple has chosen picnic blankets and baskets, consider pairing them with tickets to an outdoor concert you know the couple would like.
"
I HEAD TO THE COUPLE'S REGISTRY AS SOON AS I RECEIVE A SAVE THE DATE.
3
"
Some experts say you have a year after the wedding to send a gift, but I head to a couple’s registry as soon as I receive a save the date. The longer you wait, the fewer gift options you have. That being said, Target maintains registries
7
2
Anything you read about how much is appropriate to spend is antiquated. Thoughtful and personal wins out every time.
7
8 for up to a year after the wedding date, so all of you procrastinators don’t need to fret!
4
Giving money or a gift card is acceptable, especially if it comes with a thoughtful note and suggestion about what the couple might want to use it for – a couples massage, special night out, or even a contribution to the down payment on their new home.

Eccentric styling, a designer wardrobe, fashion industry hair and makeup artists, hand-painted backdrops, and a meticulous set design all work in tandem to accentuate the bride’s natural beauty. The brides are styled by Cynthia Altoriso – a friend, business partner, and creative collaborator. Cynthia’s in-depth knowledge of historical fashion make her a dynamic collaborative force for my chosen medium and style of image making. Our carefully casted hair and makeup artists are fashion industry celebrities in their own right, and take their work very seriously. On a recent shoot, one of our hair stylists, Jerry Lopez, created a wintry Russian hair crown out of the bride’s natural long, blonde hair! The hair, which is only one important element of the fashion portrait, becomes a sculptural work of living art. I love working with brides. They are full of natural vibrancy and exude a peculiar excitement that renders well in the photographs. Brides are going through a unique change in their life, and it is our mission to memorialize this chapter. We are creating museum-grade studio portraits that are deliberate, sexy, edgy, and avantgarde. The private sessions we offer are expensive, bold, and daring. The plates created during the sessions are original works of art, and should be treated and presented like oil paintings or other works of fine medium in your collection.

W H AT M A K E S WILLIAMSBURG AN IDEAL L O C AT I O N ?
Williamsburg is known to be on the forefront of the small-batch, handcrafted, artisan food movement. There are brewers and distillers here, so naturally there should be a winery as well. I’m a real beach girl. I spent my first summer alive taking naps by the ocean out East. My mom says it’s the only place I would sleep.
