WELCOME TO NEWCASTLE TOWN FC

NEWCASTLE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB OFFICIALS

TALK OF THE TOWN Good afternoon and a warm welcome to today’s visitors Leek Town who have made the short journey to be with us this afternoon. We hope you enjoy your visit and have a safe journey home. This will be our third League game of the season and follows on from our FA Cup game at Romulus on Saturday. If that game ended in a draw the replay will be next Tuesday KO 7.45 pm. The FA have put back the replays this season so that clubs don’t lose their lucrative Bank Holiday fixture as we did last season when we had a replay at Evesham. If we won the tie on Saturday the draw for the next round will take place tomorrow morning will the fixtures released at 1.00 pm. The Reserves have made a good start, winning two and drawing one of their opening three fixtures before going down narrowly at Wolstanton putting them seventh in the table. We did not have a fixture last Saturday so we have a game in hand on most of the teams above us. In the FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round Castle have been drawn at home to Bedworth United with the game taking place in the week beginning Monday 3rd September. Victory for Town would see them at home again in the First Round Qualifying two weeks later to either Halesowen Town or Nuneaton Griff. The actual date of the Preliminary Round will be decided depending on whether we have a FA Cup Replay on the Tuesday. Our thoughts are with Reserve keeper Chris Fletcher who received a nasty injury in the pre-season game against Rocester and after a clash of legs has seen a blood clot appear and so will miss several games as well as having to have time off work. Congratulations go to our Reserve Team Manager Wayne Brotherton who got married last week. We wish them well in the future. Hope everyone enjoys today’s game but keep an eye on our website to see when we are next down here due to the FA Cup. The next game is due for Tuesday 11th September against Prescot Cables but there could be a cup game on the 4th or 8th.

NEWCASTLE TOWN FC v Leek Town

THOUGHTS FROM THE DUGOUT Today we host Leek Town FC at the Red Industries Stadium for our first local derby of the season. Leek Town are looking to push into the play-offs this season after narrowly missing out last time around which makes today’s game a stern test of us this afternoon. It’s always good to see some familiar faces and we would like to welcome Neil Baker, his backroom staff and players as well as the directors and supporters to what we expect to be an exciting and competitive match. Our young squad is quickly adapting to the EvoStik League and we have been encouraged by the performances in the league thus far which has shown us dominating large spells during each game without getting the results our play deserved. We are fully aware that its all about points on the board and winning games will breathes confidence so we are looking for another good performance and 3 points this time around. Hopefully when you read this we will have progressed in the FA Cup. There is always a bit of magic about the Cup at all levels and a good cup run would be good for the club and the supporters. We are saying goodbye to Harry Goode who has left the Club for pastures new at Loughborough Dynamo. We wish Harry all the best for the future. However we are looking to bring a player in to strengthen the squad and hopefully he will be joining us later in the week. We would like to wish everybody a great afternoon of football and hope you enjoy the game. Rob and Dave

PROUD SUPPORTERS OF NEWCASTLE TOWN FC

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LEEK TOWN Although some say the origins of Leek Town go back as far as 1876, the history of the club as we now know it begins in 1946. Starting out as Leek Lowe Hamil in the Leek and Moorlands League and progressing to the Staffordshire County League, where they still hold the record of being the only team to win the championship without the loss of a match in 1949-50. On moving into the Manchester League in 1951-52, they became Leek Town and won the championship at the first attempt. After a brief flirtation with the Birmingham League in 1954-55, they moved back to the Manchester League and eventually back to the Staffordshire County League. It was 1968 when Leek Town started to become the club it is now. The ground was improved adding a clubhouse, small stand and floodlights. Manager Paul Ogden led the team to success in the Staffordshire County League and the Manchester League before joining the Cheshire League in the 1973-74 season and winning that championship at the second attempt. The chairman at the time was the late Geoff Harrison, after whom Harrison Park is named. Leek became founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982, but had little success. When the Northern Premier League was formed in 1987, Leek were again, founder members. After two seasons finishing third, they were promoted to the Premier Division on topping the First Division in 1989-90. This season also saw them reach the FA Trophy final at Wembley, where they lost 3-0 to Barrow. This was a historic achievement, as no other side from that level of the pyramid had ever done so previously. The success, all under the guidance of manager, Neil Baker, continued in the following season in the form of an FA Cup run where they defeated Scarborough in the First Round Proper and forced a replay against Chester City in the Second Round. Leek’s second place finish in 1993-94 should have been enough to see them promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. Instead, they were rewarded by being shunted sideways to the Southern League, as they were denied a place for financial reasons. They enjoyed a fairly successful campaign, finishing in seventh place, but due to the crippling financial

NEWCASTLE TOWN FC v Leek Town

commitment, requested a move back to the Northern Premier League. Success followed shortly as they won the championship in the 1996-97 season and were promoted to the Conference. The club managed to retain its Conference status at the end of the first season, a feat that required them to play six matches in the final eight days of the season. The following season proved one too many and relegation back to the UniBond Premier Division resulted. The relegation saw a complete change in the playing staff, with a side of mainly local players. The team struggled and was relegated again at the end of the 2000-01 season to the UniBond First Division. Following the league restructuring at the end of the 2003-04 season, Leek returned to the Premier Division where they finished in seventh position. In the following three seasons Blues struggled against relegation and after two great escapes they succumbed in the 2007-08 season. Relegation saw a complete rebuilding of the side but under managers Wayne Johnson and Neil Cox they failed to reach the promotion play-offs. Lee Casswell then took charge and has led the Blues to the promotion play-offs three times in four seasons, losing twice in the final including most recently in 2014-15 against Sutton Coldfield Town. Neil Baker returned to the dugout for season 2017-18 after spending 23 successful years with Crewe Alexandra, the veteran boss coming close to leading his side into the promotion play-offs at the first attempt as Blues finished a respectable seventh in EvoStik South. Baker took charge again for season 2018-19 as the Blues kicked off in the newly constituted EVO-STIK League West Division.

MIDLAND FLOODLIT YOUTH LEAGUE It has been a busy start to pre-season for the Midland Floodlit Youth League Under 18s team; trials started in June and a massive 40 players have turned out to try out for the team. The numbers are being whittled down before the pre season friendlies begin. Managers Gavin Appleby and Lee Sherwin have been rocked by the news evergreen Louis Vincent will miss 10 months of football after an operation to fix an ALC injury, the club wishes him well. The side still require one or two additional players to make up the squad and request anyone interested to get in contact with the club. The season kicks off on the 23rd August with an away game at Haughmond.. Entrance to matches this season will be FREE of charge and we encourage you to come and watch our starts of the future!

YOUTH SECTION UPDATE The Youth Section continues to go from strength to strength, after another successful season with a Sentinel Shield and Cup double, and a record breaking 4th Sentinel Cup in a row, there has never been a better time to be involved in the club. Further success came in the signing of some of our youth players to professional clubs; Leo Forlani to Stoke City FC, Henry Hadgett to Stoke City FC and former player Tyler Barnes to Mansfield Town FC, to name but a few. The club would like to say well done to Floodlit player Ethan Cartwright who obtained his first England cap playing for the schoolboys after being spotted through college football. The club will operate 24 youth teams, boys and girls, for the upcoming season across ages from 7 upwards. The players have access to fantastic training facilities at Roe Lane Playing Fields, Newcastle-under-Lyme College and Clayton Hall Academy where they ply their trade. All officials, coaches and helpers with all the teams are fully qualified for their roles and everyone involved with the Youth Section and even the Senior Team Officials who come into contact with the youngsters in any way are all qualified in Safeguarding the wellbeing of our youngsters. This is a main priority of Newcastle Town Football Club. During the school holidays the club runs training camps for youngsters at Roe Lane. Details can be found in advance on our Social Media sites. It’s a great way to occupy bored youngsters of all ages.. If you have anyone who would like to get involved either playing or volunteering then please get in touch. For further information phone Gavin Appleby 07904 511561.
