OW do you feel about your chances of winning another gold medal this year? “I’ve had to work really hard just to qualify,

there’s more hard work ahead but hopefully come August I’ll be in the best possible position to achieve my goal. Hopefully I can make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.” Who is your biggest threat? “There are some fantastic sailors in the Finn Class… [and] a number of sailors that on their day will be tough to beat. I just have to make sure I’m in the best condition mentally and physically to perform at my peak.” What have you been working hardest on? “Earlier this year I had an operation on a serious back injury that built up over some time. It was a great success but the rehab has been really tricky with periods of big gain followed by setbacks and it has been a frustrating experience trying to get back to full fitness.”

Whatever type of boat or class you sail, you pick things up that will help you in other situations. Tactically, match racing is full on and tense so I learnt a great deal from getting the starts

What was going through your mind when you jumped in the water to confront the media boat in Perth? “It certainly wasn’t the greatest moment of my sailing career and something I deeply regret, I was extremely frustrated at the time and it was gut wrenching to lose out on being able to compete in the medal race. But we have all moved on and I’m now fully focused on the Olympics.” Would you like to return to racing on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour? “At the moment I’m 100 per cent focused on the Olympics and then come September I will be full time with BAR competing in the AC45 series. The AWMRT is an excellent tour and I really enjoyed my years competing on the Tour, with winning the 2010 title one of my career highlights, I hope one day I will get the chance again.”

STADIUM SAILING

IN THE HEART OF AMERICA

LIKE MANY IN AMERICA’S HEARTLAND, CHICAGO SPORTS COMMISSIONER SAM STARK IS ADMITTEDLY NOT A SAILOR. BUT IN HIS ROLE TO USE SPORTING ACTIVITIES IN THE CHICAGO AREA TO HELP DRIVE TOURISM, SAILING HAS SUDDENLY BECOME MUCH MORE INTERESTING NOW THAT THE CHICAGO MATCH RACE CENTER HAS BROUGHT SPECTATOR-FRIENDLY ‘STADIUM SAILING’ TO THE CITY’S DOORSTEP AT NAVY PIER. THE POTENTIAL TO ADD SAILING AS YET ANOTHER FACET TO THE CITY’S WELL-EARNED REPUTATION AS BEING SPORTS-FRIENDLY – WHETHER ITS PLAYING OR WATCHING – HAS STARK INTRIGUED, SO WE ASKED HIM WHY.

EVEN IN A SYMBOLIC WAY. SAILING CAN COMPLEMENT AND MAYBE EVEN ENHANCE CHICAGO’S ‘WINDY CITY’ LABEL

our visitors are in love with sports of any type, so having a competition will always attract interest; and even in a symbolic way, sailing can complement and maybe even enhance Chicago’s ‘Windy City’ label. Competitive sailing and other watersports just adds to the portfolio of the more popular field and court sports (eg, baseball, football, and basketball) already

Everyone who participates in these activities has a positive economic footprint on the city, directly or indirectly through their use of the city’s transportation systems, support of the events and its vendors, the surrounding restaurants and hotels, and a myriad of other ways. Do you think competitive sailing can add to Chicago’s image as a waterfront city? Yes, for many reasons: because the facilities are available with easy access to the public; it complements the broad public interest in activities on and around the Lake; Chicagoans and many of

enjoyed by so many in non-waterfront venues. In most other sailing events the action is enjoyed only by the participants out of public view (eg, the annual Chicago-Mackinac Race), but the Chicago Match Cup and other CMRC events are held in a stadium-style venue placed at the end of Navy Pier. Given the easy public access, can you foresee increased interest in sailing during this event? We have many festivals on the waterfront where boats of all types are available for tours and boat rides, but this looks to be a unique opportunity to see the sport in action, live and in front of the public. Navy Pier is the perfect setting for this, as there can be tens of thousands of visitors who come for this and all the other Pier attractions. Out of these, there certainly should be some who may see an interest to participate themselves. This could lead to sail training, regatta participation, and even boat ownership, which all has positive economic impact on the city. Given

the

of sailing, can you foresee it growing in importance to enhance the image of the city as the “Greenest City in America”? Yes, in fact, this fits well with city architect Daniel Burnham’s original vision in 1909 of having extensive available parkland in the city, which resulted in the development of the large 26-mile swath of lakefront park we enjoy today. The city has 7700 acres of park, 50 natural areas, over 30 beaches, 16 lagoons, and 3.5 million trees, and Mayor Emanuel has made it clear that green space preservation will remain a high priority, as it has in past city governments. Sailing can be a sport for Chicago that would fit well with that green image, and therefore gain the attention and support of both residents and visitors alike.

T. MORITZ Match Race isn’t just a regatta: it is a festival for the eyes and a unique atmosphere. “This is the only venue where dad can be racing in the

snow while the family is swimming in the pool and watching the racing”, remembers Ed Baird, winner in 2005. Back in 2000, Switzerland was just a small alpine country lost in the middle of the Alps… And then came Alinghi, winning the America’s Cup 2003 and turning Switzerland into a major international sailing nation! St. Moritz Match Race was born on its wake. “I was approached by Roni Pieper, one of the club’s members, in order to help them organize a match racing event”, remembers Christian Scherrer. “That’s how we created St. Moritz Match Race, initially a grade 3 event. MAIN PAGE | UNIQUE VENUE: WHERE DAD CAN BE RACING IN SNOW WHILE FAMILY IS SWIMMING IN THE POOL AND WATCHING THE RACE THIS PAGE | (TOP RIGHT): WORLD’S BEST MATCH RACER: ADAM MINOPRIO, ALPARI WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR 2009 CHAMPION; OPPOSITE PAGE | (CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT) ST MORITZ: A FESTIVAL FOR THE EYES

From that starting point, the event grew each year and steadily built up, becoming a grade 1 event in 2005 and joining the Swedish Match Tour in 2006.” Jochen Schuemann who had been racing successfully with the late Roni Pieper in the 5,5 m JI Class, was also one of the driving forces behind St. Moritz Match Race thanks to his vision, and he also competed in the event. Beryl Pieper, who took over many responsibilities when her father died in 2007, remembers that “whilst St. Moritz Match Race has always been popular amongst sailors, our goal from the onset was to make it a big public and corporate event. That’s why we created the grand stand, as well as a big hospitality tent since the beginning of the event. Thanks to this, St. Moritz Match race has clearly established itself as Switzerland’s most important professional sailing regatta.” In its ten years history, the event has been won by some of the worlds’ best match racers: Ed Baird, Paolo Cian, Ian Williams, Mathieu Richard, Mark Mendelblatt, Adam Minoprio and Torvar Mirsky. For all the top sailors who competed in St. Moritz Match Race, this event meant something very special, much more than just a sailing regatta. The tenth edition will with no doubt live up to its reputation.

OR more than 10 years, Marseilles and the Pointe Rouge Yachting Club have hosted match racing events.

The YCPR, one of the greatest French yacht clubs, is

skilfully steered by its president Christian Tomasini and over the last decade it has become the yardstick club of this discipline in France. Training and advanced training courses, the organisation of competition at national and international level, there are so many arguments which have convinced the AWMRT organisers in 2008 to elevate the city of Marseilles to the top stage for world championship match racing. Since its inception Match Race France has brought together quality sporting facilities. There are very few competitions entitled to welcome the greatest master “helmsmen”! Every year nearly 150 volunteer club members or licensed yachtsmen get together and actively participate in the good running of the event, an unfailing commitment that contributes to the success of Match Race France. The combination of the two circuits, Match Race France Alpari-WMRT and MOD70 European Tour (multi-hulls 21 m long and 17 m wide), as part of a week dedicated to sailing in Marseilles, brings together, in the heart of the Roucas Blanc nautical stadium, the best skippers in the world on the water. For six days, the sailing elite challenge each other in the heart of the south bay as close as possible to the coasts and the beaches to offer an exceptional spectacle to the biggest number of people. And unlike other nations like France and Britain who put their full support behind their chosen athletes early in each Olympic cycle, the US still relies on more of a free-market approach that fosters competition amongst numerous candidates who qualify, with the ultimate Olympian determined only a few months before the Games through race results compute from several important international events. The toughest of these three was Barkow, who was not only an Olympian herself from the Yngling class, but like Tunnicliffe, chose to diversify her match racing portfolio by toughening up in numerous Open as well as Women’s events. Indeed, Barkow’s recent impressive performance at the Chicago Match Race Center’s June Grade 2 Invitational landed her an invitation to the AWMRT Chicago Match Cup this month, proof that when necessary the top girls can even play rough with the boys. And for her top performances in the past three years, Tunnicliffe has collected three consecutive Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Awards in the US, as well as last year’s Rolex World Sailor of the Year award by ISAF. But now is not the time to look back as the Games approach in less than a month. Team Tunnicliffe is currently focusing on learning how to master what could be a difficult but spectator-friendly venue in Weymouth, and keeping Team Maclaren’s eyes on the prize.
