David Gilmour showed the heart of a champion when he bounced back from losing the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta final to become the first West Australian yachtsman to win the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s prestigious Hardy Cup under 25, ISAF Grade 3 match racing regatta.
“It was revenge for being beaten by Josh in Perth last week.”
Victory was especially sweet for the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club sailor as he defeated New Zealand’s Josh Junior 3-1 in the final in Sydney, a week after losing by the same score to the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club skipper in Perth.
Over the past four years, Australian and New Zealand crews have each won the Hardy Cup twice, with William Tiller from Auckland’s Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron regaining the trophy last year A soaking wet Gilmour, who was tossed into the Sydney Harbour by his elated crew, comprising Ted Hackney and Luke Payne, admitted he had revenge on his mind. “It was revenge for being beaten by Josh in Perth last week,” said Gilmour, son of former America’s Cup helmsman and four-time world match racing champion, Peter. “In Perth, we finished at the top of the round-robin scoreboard and lost the final. In Sydney, Josh won the round-robin, but we won the final and Cup.” The two young skippers are seen as the future of the sport and their developing rivalry will certainly push each other to achieve greater results.

But in a game that is nearly always invitation-only, how can you get started?
by DOBBS DAVIS

This can be a tricky, because invitations to even modest
events are extended to those skippers who have relatively high positions on the world match race rankings list, which is managed by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). The higher the ranking of the skipper, the easier it is for the organising authority to get a high grading for the event, which in turn generates more available points for the participants.
The answer lies in being persistent, flexible, political and organised.
Persistence can pay off if you are good at contacting event
organisers and are willing to do some politicking. Introduce yourself, explain to them that you would be excited at having the opportunity to race in their event, and to please stay in touch with you if an opportunity arises - this is usually because an invited team has dropped out, and when that happens you want to me the first person that comes to mind for them as a replacement. Many famous match race skippers have made their start this way.
MATCH RACING 360° | page 16 | March 2012
MR360° News: Rankings
Many famous match race skippers have made their start this way.
Flexibility may be the most important trait to have when
hunting for invitations, because when an opportunity does present itself, you must be ready to commit. The opportunity might come as much as a few months away or just a few days. Since this often involves travel, you’ll have to factor this in as well. Being organised is critical: map out a strategy for what events are on your list, download and read their Notices of Race, get the right contact data for who to write to or call, and take notes on the conversations, as you may forget any nuances later when you’re time may come. Also track your own ranking as it changes through the season so that you can inform whoever you are writing to with the latest information… don’t make them have to take time to hunt this down.
And while its a great feeling to get a start up the ladder on the rankings, be careful also not to lose what you’ve worked so hard to gain. One of the fastest ways to do this is to commit to attend an event and then back out within two months of the start: besides being discourteous, the ISAF Regulations say this could earn you a zero-point result for that event unless you have a very good excuse. Also, remember your ranking points do not last forever, but decay in value with time: current year points are multiplied by 6; they reduce to 3 after one year, and in the third year get no multiplier at all.
Photo by Chris Davies / Alpari World Match Racing Tour
Another tactic is to be political: get to know some of the big-name skippers, and ask them for advice or any contacts or any leads that may arise. Last (but certainly not least) is besides having yourself ready to go, you must also have your team ready. This is really difficult, because your crew have lives too and may not have exactly the flexibility that you have. But organisers know this, particularly for the bigger boat regattas, and thus may have some local talent to help round out
Go to www.sailing.org/4891.php to get all the details on calculating points for the ranking list, and Good Luck with your climb!
Another way to help organisers (and the public) know who you are is to use: • a good website for your team - essential for updates on your team’s progress • social media, like Facebook and Twitter to give real-time info • regular email updates to your mailing list of sponsors and fans

Malaysia’s Jeremy Koo had mixed feelings after being crowned at the 15th Asian Sailing Championship in Langkawi recently. While obviously delighted to have won his country’s first gold medal in the 15th edition of the Championships, Jeremy lamented that the lack of media coverage is hampering the sport and preventing more sponsors from coming in. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is no coverage, but more can be done. The sport has progressed so much since I first started sailing in the optimist class many, many years ago,” said Jeremy, who is based in Hong Kong.
“The annual Monsoon Cup has also helped create some awareness about the sport in the country but all in all, we are still lacking in terms of media coverage. Maybe with better coverage, it will be easier for the sailors to find sponsors.”
Jeremy is now hoping to raise funds to race in the Korean
Qualifier event in April, the first step towards eventually becoming the first Malaysian to race full time on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. “I would most definitely love to race full time on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, but that is not cheap,” said Jeremy, who was the first Malaysian to compete in the America’s Cup as a member of Team China. “Hopefully, I can get a manager to help me as right now, I have to assist in the marketing and scouting of sponsorships. It would be great if the government is also supportive of my activities.” MATCH RACING 360° | page 19 | March 2012

Second success for Tunnicliffe Anna Tunnicliffe became only the third female to win the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards for a second time, following in the footsteps of Ellen MacArthur (GBR) in 2001 and 2005 as well as Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE) in 2002 and 2004. Tunnicliffe claimed the title for the first time in 2009 and was rewarded in 2011 on the back of another year of achievement in which she became the ISAF Sailing World Cup champion in Women’s Match Racing. Over the 12-month qualification period for the Awards, the 29year old only twice returned from a regatta without a medal. Over a decade long career, English-born Tunnicliffe, whose parents moved to Perrysburg, Ohio, when she was 12-years-old, has mastered Laser, Snipe and Match Racing sailing, collecting medals from all corners of the globe. “It’s so amazing to win ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award again. I truly didn’t expect it this year. I was up against so many great competitors, so many great accomplishments. Bill Hardesty, who was the tactician behind Team GAC Pindar’s

During the ceremony, Hardesty remembered a promise he made to his father in 1990. “After winning the Bemis Trophy, I was named to the Rolex Junior Sailing Team. Well, obviously we didn’t get a Rolex. And when I saw my dad, he said, ‘Okay, let’s make a deal. You can go to whatever sailing events you want, but when you win a Rolex, you have to give it to me.’ I thought, okay, seemed like a fair deal. “So dad, why don’t you come on up and get your Rolex,” said Hardesty, who then presented his watch to the man who has supported his career. Hardesty’s notable performances as tactician included winning the 47th Congressional Cup in Catalina 37s and the CMRC Grade 2 Invitational in Tom 28s, along with top finishes at the Rolex Big Boat Series in Express 37s (second) and the Farr 40 World GOOD MEMORY: Hardesty kept a promise he made in 1990. In 2002, they missed out to three-time winner Ben Ainslie, before Brazilian Robert Scheidt took the plaudits in 2004. Eleven years on from their first nomination, these sailing legends may now, deservedly, see their names inscribed in the list of the sport’s greats. It is the second time a Spanish crew has won the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award following Tornado World Champions Fernando Echavarri and Antón Paz back in 2005. If you could master a new language or a new skill overnight, what would it be? I would like to have night-time infrared vision, sometimes it can help you! What types of people do you enjoy? Keith Swinton is no stranger to the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, but admitted to feeling butterflies in his stomach after learning he earned a full tour card for the 2012 season. Having taken part in the Asian Match Racing Championship and Monsoon Cup as well as several other legs on the tour, the Aussie has finally fulfilled a dream to race full time in the most challenging series of its kind this year. “Obviously we were happy and satisfied to receive the card. Then thoughts quickly turned to getting organised for the year. When you run your own team there is plenty to be done,” said Swinton. “We hope for a set of consistent results. In terms of our sailing we will be looking for improvements across the season. I think we have a good chance of being right up there in the tour. We had a great year in 2011 and confidence is high.” Among the highlights of last season for Swinton was winning the Chicago Match Cup, which put him in an elite group of sailors to have won in America. If he continues his sterling progress, more wins will be on the cards for the charismatic young skipper.
Did you have any sporting heroes when you were growing up? Yes, I looked up to sailors like John Bertrand (winning helmsman 1983 AC Australia 2) & Peter Gilmour. Also ex Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, who was an awesome leader. Is there any other athlete you would like to be? Maybe Roger Federer. If not a sailor, what would you have become? I think I would have followed my father into the building industry. Career highlight? I think winning the Chicago and Berlin grade 1 events last year, is hard to split. We also made the quarter-finals in our first tour event in Bermuda 2008, we raced Ben Ainslie which was great. We lost 3-1 but we sailed quite well, so that was a highlight. … and the worst moment? I think missing the quarter-finals on a count back at Match Cup Sweden last year was hard. We blew so many chances in the round robin then to miss out on a tie was terrible. Losing the Warren Jones Youth Match Racing Regatta final to Torvar Mirsky in 2007 was also pretty tough especially in such close circumstances.

team are fantastic with this. Personally, I try to go to the gym four to five times a week. When in Perth I like to run on the beach and do some exercises there. My brother is a pretty good boxer so recently I have been doing some work outs with him which is even better. Sailing wise, we don’t train that much together, but try to do as many events as possible. I am lucky enough to be involved with a couple of the women’s teams, especially the Swedish team, training for the Olympics. I will often act as a training partner which is great. Your favourite food? Steak. Your favourite holiday destination? Rottnest Island (off the coast of Perth). If you can have a super power or be a superhero, what or who would it be? Laurie Jury has a simple dream ahead of his first full year as a tour card holder on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour – to upset a few of the old guards. The New Zealander will be the first to admit his team will struggle to win races this year, but is confident of giving the more established skippers a run for their money. “This is our first time on the world tour so we don’t have high expectations. We are really looking to improve through the season and hopefully achieve a few upsets,” said 29-yearold Jury, who was encouraged to take up sailing by his parents. “The team has been working hard towards getting a tour card for the past three years and it is a dream come true to finally get the chance.” Jury, who won the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final Open in September, is one of five new tour card holders on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour this season. Little did Bjorn Hansen realise that an act of “robbery” would pave the way for him to become one of the best sailors in the world. “I got my start in sailing at age four when I stole my sister’s optimist dinghy,” recalled Hansen, when asked how he first started sailing. After getting a taste of sailing, there was no turning back and six years later, Hansen won his first race at the Spring Cup, Åmål. Since then, he has been gearing up for the big challenge of racing full time on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, a dream which will become a reality this season. “I was both happy and relieved when I received news that I would be getting a tour card. It is going to be tough, but we definitely have a chance to become champions with this team,” said Hansen, who was born in Sweden, but is now a citizen of Finland. Hansen’s confidence stems from the fact he has regularly competed in what he terms “the world’s leading sailing series.” In fact, Hansen already has two Tour wins under his belt, winning his home race, Match Cup Sweden in 2007 and last year’s Korea Match Race. It will certainly be a “Swede Finnish” if Hansen lives up to his word by grabbing the 2012 Alpari World Match Racing Tour title.

Chicago will blow you away photos by ISAO TOYAMA / CHICAGO MATCH RACE CENTER
The newest stop on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour is at the Chicago Match Cup, the only US event on the Tour. Racing will be held from July 10-15 in eight equally-matched TOM 28 MAX class boats, with a US$100,000 total prize money purse at stake. “We are extremely excited to host the Alpari World Match Racing Tour in Chicago,” said Chicago Match Race Center founder Don Wilson. “This is a great opportunity to show the world how great this city can be as a site for world class sailing, and to showcase the incredible talent that will be here to compete in July.” The CMRC was founded in 2009 to promote and grow the sport of match race sailing by Wilson and Alpari World Match Racing Tour champion Bill Hardesty. As part of its mission to provide the highest-level match racing training facility for professional and amateur sailors in the US, CMRC has a fleet of both TOM’s and Elliott 6M class boats, the type that will be used in the 2012 Olympic Games.

Cashing in With negotiations for six exciting new venues for the Alpari World Match Racing Tour at an advanced stage, Match Racing 360° catches up with Terry by RUPERT HOLMES
Newby from Regatta International who is managing the venue acquisition process.
He says there are five key elements that together produce clearly tangible benefits to host city venues: captivating live TV coverage that’s made possible by radical new boat designs, unique networking opportunities, unprecedented prize money and the skill of the world’s best sailors pitched against each other in one-on-one combat.
Massive TV coverage The extensive worldwide TV coverage reaches a growing audience through the Alpari World Match Racing’s extensive distribution networks. “The key element in this is the spectacle that will keep viewers engaged,” says Newby. “High speed collisions are part of the ruthless one-on-one combative nature of match racing, which makes captivating TV. The fantastic new boats that are proposed will make the TV really come alive – they are the future of the Tour.” The live broadcasts use of multiple cameras on and off the water and on competing boats, as well as heart-rate monitors and microphones on each of the crew. This enables the coverage to zoom to the hottest action, including the inevitable and numerous high-speed crosses and collisions as the teams vie for the best tactical position. In addition to the TV coverage, events take place in stadium settings that maximise viewing potential for spectators and create a fabulous showcase for host cities and other stakeholders. It’s also a wonderful hospitality experience for local businesses to network within the context of a worldclass sporting event. Sailing brings alive the waterfront like nothing else and the Alpari World Match Racing Tour is right there in front of you.

Unparalleled impacts The overall effect of hosting a stage of the tour is therefore to bring the venue to the forefront of global exposure, enhance tourist arrivals and spur local businesses to deliver an unparalleled economic impact. However, there are also many additional ways in which venues can reap benefits. It’s an ideal springboard for revitalising a city’s waterfront. A new venue in Holland, for instance, has a waterfront reclaimed from the sea that they want to become a centre of marine excellence. They see Alpari World Match Racing Tour as a global networking opportunity that will give Photo by Gareth Cooke / SubZero Images
access to top professionals and decision makers in this industry around the world. By contrast, a city in the Middle East has a greater focus on creating an integrated international sailing event that will directly link local communities with the highest echelons of international sport. The Tour’s Argo Group Gold Cup in Bermuda already has a model for this: the Junior Gold Cup is organised locally, with 30 top Optimist sailors from around the world invited to take part alongside 15 top local sailors. Racing is held at the same time as the AWMRT event, on a separate course close to the main racecourse. This has become a very high level event for which young Optimist sailors from around the world try very hard to qualify for.
