“Practically Perfect in every way

WELCOME It is with excitement and great pride that I acknowledge the combined schools performance of the much loved musical, Mary Poppins by students of Mater Christi and St Joseph’s Colleges. Both Cathy Livingston and I as Principals of the two Colleges are delighted to support this first venture into an annual shared production. Almost from the moment of its selection as the school production for 2017, toes have been tapping in anticipation of chimney sweeping routines, spoons to the ready to sweeten the medicine, umbrellas on standby for flying nannies... all ready for a supercalifragilistic experience! I commend the group of student performers, uniquely combining our two schools. They have certainly given their all over a sustained period of preparation, planning and rehearsals. I thank the many other students who have worked to provide quality music, sets, sound, lighting and backstage support. We are grateful also to parents and guardians who consistently supported a hectic rehearsal schedule. Congratulations and thanks to the staff across both schools who inspired and supported this fabulous production, especially Director/Producer Nardia Trubridge; Assistant Producer Libbie Rogers; Choreographer Sarah Owen, Musical Director Graham Balderstone; St Joseph’s Liaison Teacher Bronwyn Dean; Community Liaison Officer Jacinta Crocker; and Publicity Designer Casey Pipinis. We have witnessed a great team effort, with other staff assisting in many ways – with costumes, posters, t-shirts. Most importantly, a huge thanks to the VCAL students from both Colleges, so ably led by Vivienne Egan, Sara Mugridge and Barry Campbell, for building the sets. A great effort. This is essentially a classic family tale with gentle twists and of course a happy ending. I trust that our student performers, cast and crew will experience a similar sense of happiness and achievement from performances well delivered. However, of greater importance are the lessons inherent in the process of preparation around diligence, determination, restorative practices and teamwork. Learning is lifelong and multi-faceted. It is achieved through faith, trust and compassion. I am confident that everyone in the audience will quickly be delighted and singing along as they enjoy this wonderful production by the students of Mater Christi and St Joseph’s Colleges. Again my congratulations and appreciation to everyone for their part in its journey. Mary Fitz-Gerald Principal, Mater Christi College

Musicals provide a wonderful opportunity for students to stretch their boundaries and achieve things that can, at times, surprise them. This year, Mary Poppins has been just that for dozens of students from Mater Christi College and St Joseph’s College. During 2016, Mary Fitz-Gerald and I made the decision to collaborate in a more formal way with the strengthening of a partnership between our two Colleges for the staging of the annual Musical. Mater Christi College has taken the lead this year, and we have been delighted with the care and comradery extended to us during the many months of auditions and rehearsals. My appreciation is extended to Mary Fitz-Gerald, Julie Feeney, Nardia Trubridge, Libbie Rogers, Sarah Owen, Graham Balderstone and all the members of the Mater Christi College community who have led the staging of the performances. St Joseph’s College students, staff and parents have also played a pivotal role. I am particularly grateful to Bronwyn Dean and Siobhan Duffy for their support as well as the many people who helped build sets and be a presence at Mater College during rehearsals. The renowned physicist, Albert Einstein, was spot on when he said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” I trust that you enjoy the performances that showcase creativity, talent, friendship and “a spoonful of sugar”. My best wishes to all. Cathy Livingston Principal, St Joseph’s College

FROM THE DIRECTOR... In response to the shared vision of both Mary Fitz-Gerald and Cathy Livingston, 2017 marks the beginning of the Mater Christi College and St Joseph’s College communities combining to showcase our talents in the field of performing arts through our yearly musical productions. This year, we have been fortunate to acquire the rights to stage one of the most popular Disney movies of all time, which was one of my favourite films when I was a little girl. Who could go past the catchy tunes of ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’ of the ‘Practically Perfect’ musical Mary Poppins. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins has been a delight to direct with it’s enchanting story, catchy songs, fantastic dance numbers, creative stagecraft and unforgettable characters. The development of the musical production of Mary Poppins has been a unique and exciting journey. Workshops and auditions were held at the end of October and the beginning of November 2016 and casting of Year 7 students in February this year. Since this time, the students and staff have been busy developing scenes, singing the musical numbers with the assistance of Elize Brozgul, rehearsing complex dance routines under the creative eye of Sarah Owen, and the orchestra has been perfecting the musical score under the direction of Graham Balderstone. As I began Maternity Leave in July, we welcomed Libbie Rogers to the team, who stepped in seamlessly and expertly to add the final touches to the performance. It has been a pleasure and honour to work with such a creative and talented team, and I would like to thank them for all of their hard work, dedication and passion.

PRODUCTION TEAM: (L-R) Libbie Rogers, Graham Balderstone, Nardia Trubridge, Sarah Owen

Behind the scenes there has been active student and alumni involvement in roles such as assistant to the director, stage manager, backstage crew, student choreographers, costume co-ordination, prop sourcing, stage-microphone application, set construction and set painting. We have also been fortunate to have the extra support of St Joseph’s staff such as Vivienne Egan and Barry Campbell in the organisation and construction of set items along with an enthusiastic group of VCAL students. I would also like to thank Bronwyn Dean who, on occasions, filled in as Musical Director at rehearsals. The dedication of students - cast, crew and orchestra has been excellent. We would like to acknowledge the extra effort required of the St Joseph students as they made their way to Mater Christi College every Tuesday and Thursday for rehearsals, and the many staff who attended rehearsals to support the students. We are also grateful to parents/guardians for transporting their son/daughter to and from rehearsals and performances, and we are particularly thankful to those who contributed their expertise with costume making and props construction. Although there are too many to mention all by name I would like to acknowledge a few more people for their ongoing support, including Mary Fitz-Gerald, Cathy Livingston, Julie Feeney, Guido Piotti, Jacinta Crocker and Casey Pipinis. We hope that you enjoy the inaugural Mater Christi College and St Joseph’s College combined production of Mary Poppins. Just make sure that if you feel the urge to get up and dance that you ‘Step in Time’ with the music and sing along with the songs. Nardia Trubridge Director / Producer, Mater Christi College

SYNOPSIS ACT 1

ACT 2

Bert, the Chimney Sweep, introduces us to Cherry Tree Lane. He stops in front of Number 17 where Jane and Michael Banks are constantly misbehaving. Katie Nana, the latest in a long line of nannies, has had enough. Mr. Banks asks his wife to place an advertisement in the newspaper for a nanny, but the children take matters into their own hands and write their own ad. Just as Mr. Banks is about to leave for work, Mary Poppins arrives; she fits the children’s requirements exactly. Mary Poppins is strict but fair; she keeps the children focused with a combination of common sense and magic.

The house is bustling again, this time because a nanny is returning to No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane. However, the visitor is Miss Andrew, Mr. Banks’ old nanny, and not Mary Poppins. Miss Andrew is a cruel and harsh woman who believes that children should be punished on a regular basis (Brimstone and Treacle). In a panic, the children escape the house and run to the park where they meet Bert, who explains that the cure for every ill can be found at the end of a kite string. Their kite flies up into the London sky and when it returns, Mary Poppins is on the other end. She returns home with them and defeats Miss Andrew in an epic battle. Mr. Banks has also been hiding from Miss Andrew, and is relieved to see Mary Poppins again.

Against their wishes, Mary Poppins takes the children on a walk to the nearby park. There they meet Bert, who is busy creating his latest works of art. Bored with the park and wary of Bert’s ragged clothes, the children try to escape their new nanny. Mary Poppins urges them to look beneath the surface of every day life to see the magic there; suddenly the park bursts into brilliant colours and the statues come to life and dance with them. The Banks children are not the only ones feeling out of place. Back at Number 17, Mrs. Banks senses that she is a disappointment to both her husband and children. She decides to throw a party for the “right sort of people”, but longs for the days when she was an actress on the London stage. The household prepares for Mrs. Banks’ party, but even with a dose of magic from Mary Poppins, no one shows up. Mrs. Banks is left feeling more lost than ever. Mary Poppins takes Jane and Michael on a trip to visit their father’s office at the bank. Mr. Banks is busy meeting with loan applicants, including a conniving businessman named Herr Von Hussler and the honest factory builder, John Northbrook. An innocent question from Jane prompts Mr. Banks to remember the ideals and values he once held. He decides to take a chance on Mr. Northbrook and gives him the loan. On the way home from the bank, the children and Mary Poppins run into the Bird Woman, feeding the birds in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Jane is still worried about outer appearances and shuns the beggar woman, but Michael gives the Bird Woman money. Mary Poppins, Jane, Michael and Bert meet Mrs. Corry, the mysterious owner of an unusual “talking shop,” where people purchase words, along with gingerbread. The children are surprised to hear that Mrs. Corry knew their father when he was a boy. Things begin to go very wrong for Mr. Banks. Von Hussler goes to another bank and makes millions, and Mr. Banks is held responsible and suspended without pay. Under great stress, he yells at the children. In turn, Jane and Michael are furious with their father and in their anger, fight over their toys. The toys magically come to life to teach the children a lesson they will never forget. Understanding that the children still have a lot to learn, Mary Poppins decides to depart, leaving them a note that reads, “Au Revoir,” or “Till We Meet Again.”

Whisked up to the rooftops, Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael meet Bert and his fellow chimney sweeps. The sweeps dance through the house, giving good luck to Mr. Banks by shaking his hand as they go. Mr. Banks’ boss, the Bank Chairman, wishes to see Mr. Banks immediately. Mr. Banks fears the worst, but Bert reminds him that his family is more important than his ambitions. Mr. Banks leaves for the bank and Mrs. Banks wishes she could go with him. Mary Poppins and the children encourage her to do what she believes in. At the Bank, Mr. Banks defends his actions in front of the Board of Directors, who tell him that he was right all along. Herr Von Hussler’s schemes have fallen through and their competition is ruined, while Northbrook’s factories have made a healthy profit. They promote Mr. Banks, who tells them, from now on, his family comes first. With her job complete, Mary Poppins leaves to help another family in need. Although Jane, Michael and their parents are sad to see her go, they are glad they have once again found each other.
