Principal’s Welcome It is with enthusiasm and pride that I acknowledge Mater Christi College’s performance of the much loved musical, The Wiz. Almost from the moment of its selection for the School Production for 2015, students and staff have been buzzing with anticipation of this enjoyable event. Who could fail to empathise with the lost and forlorn Dorothy, singing her way to Emerald City with the help of friends, especially that ‘brainless’ Scarecrow, the ‘heartless’ Tin Man and the ‘cowardly’ Lion? I commend this team of student performers who have certainly given their all over a long period of preparation, planning and rehearsals to ensure an engaging and excellent performance. I thank the many other students who have worked to provide quality music, sets, sound, lighting and backstage support. We are grateful also to parents and guardians who consistently supported a hectic rehearsal schedule.
Dorothy’s quest was to find her way back home, and she eventually succeeds, through doing what she loves best. I trust that our student performers, cast and crew will experience a similar sense of home-coming after a performance well delivered. However of greater importance are the lessons inherent in the process of preparation around diligence, determination, restorative practice and teamwork. Learning is lifelong and multi-faceted. It is achieved through faith, trust and compassion. I am confident that everyone in the audience will quickly feel at home ‘in Emerald City,’ as we share this wonderful production with the students of Mater Christi College. Enjoy the performance as together we ‘Ease on Down the Road.” Mary Fitz-Gerald, Principal

Congratulations and thanks to many teachers and staff who inspired and supported this fabulous production, especially Director/Producer, Nardia Trubridge, Choreographer Sarah Owen, Musical Director Sandra Waldron, Community Liaison Jacinta Crocker and Publicity Designer Casey Eruvelil. It has been a team effort, with many other staff assisting in ways large and small – with sets, costumes, posters, t-shirts…..oh! and not forgetting the help of one family’s pet!
Production Team: Sandra Waldron, Nardia Trubridge, Sarah Owen
Director’s Note When planning for the 2015 Mater Christi Musical Production, we couldn’t go past the lovable characters and the ‘groovy’ music of the Broadway show ‘The Wiz’. This musical is a new take on L. Frank Baum’s classic ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ where Dorothy ventures in the Land of Oz. But instead of ‘Following the Yellow Brick Road’, Dorothy and her friends, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion, ‘Ease on Down the Road’ with music that is a lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul. Auditions were held at the College in late October 2014 and casting of Year 7 students in February this year. Since then, the students and staff have been developing the scenes, rehearsing complex dance routines and the orchestra has been perfecting the musical score. Behind the scenes, students have taken up roles such as assistant director, assistant choreography, spotlight controller, multi-media development, makeup design and application as well as stage managing, props co-ordination, backstage support, set painting and costume construction. We are particularly grateful to the parents who contributed their expertise with costume making. The dedication of students, cast and crew has been exceptional. This show is the culmination of months of planning and rehearsal and the tremendous commitment of many talented individuals.
The show would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Production Team. Sarah Owen and I spent many hours blocking, choreographing, rehearsing and sourcing the stagecraft to bring the show to life. We also acknowledge Sandra Waldron and the Music staff for their great effort to interpret the handwritten score and create the delightful music. Although there are too many to mention all by name, I would like to acknowledge a few people for their support, including Mary Fitz-Gerald, Julie Feeney, Tim Crowe, Carmel Feeney, Jacinta Crocker and Casey Eruvelil People in show business are advised to avoid working with animals and children. In directing ‘The Wiz’, I have done both. The ‘children’ have been exceptional, dedicated, talented and a pleasure to direct. Jackson Stiff (Toto) on the other hand, is making his acting debut and I’m sure there will be ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ when he enters the stage, but what happens next will be anyone’s guess! ‘So You Wanted to Meet the Wizard?’ Well ‘Ease on Down the Road’ into the Burrinja Theatre and prepare to be bedazzled. Nardia Trubridge, Director
Mater Christi College presents The Wiz
Synopsis ACT 1
On a small, ramshackle farmhouse in Kansas resides a bright, energetic young teenager named Dorothy. She lives with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and beloved dog Toto. A tornado sweeps up Dorothy’s house, and carries it to a strange, mystical land of Oz where it lands on and kills the Wicked Witch of the East. The Witch’s death causes quite a stir among the Munchkins and the Good Witch of the North, Addaperle. When Dorothy asks Addaperle and the Munchkins how to get back to Kansas, Addaperle gives her the Wicked Witch of the East’s silver slippers and directs her to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City where she will find the Wiz. On her travels, Dorothy meets and frees a Scarecrow from his post in the cornfields. He is a friendly and curious creature who is without a brain. Dorothy tells Scarecrow that the Wiz could probably help him and so they travel on together along to the Emerald City. In the Woods, they meet a rusted Tinman, who desires a heart in order to make his life complete. Dorothy and the Scarecrow ask him to join them and they set off to find the Wiz. Then finally, in the jungle, their journey is interrupted by the cowardly Lion who is under the psychiatric care of an owl and decides to go to Oz in the hope of finding courage so that he can be a true ‘King of the Jungle’. Together, they venture forward to gain their wishes. It isn’t all smooth sailing on their way to Oz. The four find themselves in a fight with the Kalidah’s and in the dangerous poppy field. Unfortunately, Lion succumbs to the appeal of the poppies and is only saved when the ‘Mice Squad’ comes to the rescue. Upon arrival in the futuristic Emerald City, they are thrown into a whimsical whirlwind of lunacy and vibrancy where the powerful Wizard lives, a place where they must wear green glasses at all times. The Wiz promises to grant them their wishes, but only if they kill the Wicked Witch of the West, Evillene.
ACT 2
In Evillene’s perfectly dreadful castle, the smelly Wicked Witch of the West rules over her slaves (Winkies) with the help of her right hand man, the sniveling Lord High Underling. She takes great pleasure in striking evil on those she’s unhappy with, including her unfortunate messenger who, to his detriment, reports on the presence of Dorothy and her friends. Evillene summons her winged monkeys to go after Dorothy and her friends, and they are captured. Evillene continues her wickedness and victimizes her captives. In an attempt to save the Lion, Dorothy melts the Wicked Witch with water. The friends and Winkies are all free to rejoice. The four friends then return to the Emerald City and discover that the Wiz is a phony who only accidently came to Oz when a big storm swept his hot air balloon into the middle of a ladies social. Dorothy and her friends are angry and lose hope of ever making their wishes come true. The Wiz explains that the miracle behind the green glasses is what you allow yourself to see and then he reaches into his magic store chest and begins to hand out his miracles and a promise to take Dorothy home to Kansas in his hot air balloon. However, at the farewell launch the balloon accidently ascends without Dorothy, much to her disappointment. Addaperle soon arrives and interrupts Dorothy’s tantrum. She informs the four friends that her beautiful and graceful sister Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, is on her way to help. Glinda appears, with her escorts, and tells Dorothy that the answer was there all along, that with the silver slippers she can go home anytime if she believes in herself. Slowly Dorothy’s new friends disappear, she taps her shoes together three times and finds herself at home in her small farmhouse in Kansas.
