Newcomer 2016
Newcomer 2016
The Newcomer award is our way of honouring bold young designers. Every year since 2006 we have chosen a winner whose idea we think deserves to become reality and a part of our range. Perhaps it is you?

This year’s Newcomer Kaja Solgaard Dahl.
The actual aim of Newcomer is to question, think in new ways and make smart designs. And this is what Kaja Solgaard Dahl has done. Kaja is a trained designer at Beckmans in Stockholm and has a master´s degree in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship from ECAL in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her design is based on artistic research with the aim of creating furniture which pushes boundaries. With her newly established studio, AtelierKajaDahl, she is focusing on collaborations with companies and creators who share her passion for characteristic furniture, products and concepts based on a good story. Kaja Solgaard Dahl has just started her professional career, but has already found time
to make an impression on the design scene. As the Materia Newcomer 2016, but also as one of this year’s graduates in Wallpaper Magazine’s Graduation Directory. Kaja’s contribution to the Materia range is called Lean In. This piece of furniture challenges the con ventional way of using the interior and gives form to a natural behaviour – leaning while standing up. Lean In is wall-mounted and forms an invitingly soft support for the body. Lean In is ideal in areas with limited space or rooms where you spend short periods or want to create new ways of moving and interacting.
Newcomer 2016
The piece of furniture is not finished in producing the sketch. It has to be converted into a commercial product adapted for large scale production. This phase is creative too, and re quires active involvement if it is to achieve the best results.
Lean In – from sketch to piece of furniture. Being designated Materia’s Newcomer is more than just the award itself. Besides having the opportunity to launch your design in a global market, you also gain valuable insight into how a product is produced, from sketch to finished piece of furniture. Furthermore, it is our hope that it represents the start of a lengthy collaboration.
Materia’s Product Council determines who will be Newcomer of the Year. The requirement is that it must be a piece of furniture which pushes boundaries and is based on an analysis which challenges ingrained behaviour and conventional interior design. Just like Kaja Solgaard Dahl’s Lean In.
The components which make up the piece of furniture are ordered in different versions in order to test different prototypes. For Lean In there were four, ranging from different hardness of foam to the shape of the cushions. The care we take over the details in the handicraft characterises our furniture. With Lean In, this is particularly noticeable with the upholstery and stitching.
Is your furniture our Newcomer 2017? Apply now. If you have an exciting and innovative idea that suits our product range, you might be our Newcomer 2017 and have your product manufactured by us. At the same time, it will give you a platform to make a name for yourself in the design world. And we hope that the collaboration will continue with more furniture for many years to come. Send in your entry at materia.se/en/newcomer before 1 September, 2016. Good Luck!
