29. Attributed to Henri Laurens (France, 1885-1954) cast iron Cubist sculpture, ca. 1920. There may be an indistinct inscription on the base. Laurens was the leading Cubist sculptor. His work is in many museums internationally. This cast iron Cubist figure appears to be a maquette or preliminary work for Henri Laurens' 1920 sculpture Head of a Young Woman, terra cotta, height 13" with examples in various museums including the Pompidou Center in Paris (see Sotheby's 5/8/2008 for the sale of one example, photograph above) . The current sculpture is smaller by half and slightly different than the terra cotta so it cannot be a copy. Laurens worked in cast iron, unusual for sculptors who work typically in wood, stone, terra cotta, plaster, bronze, or aluminum. (See Bonham's 11/13/20018 for 3 cast iron figures & 5/28/1986 Sotheby's New York for just one). A series of terra cotta figures and drawings by Laurens around 1920-22 explore the torso and head of young women. (See Galerie Kornfeld 9/3/21 for a closely related, very small drawing). Several days of consulting Laurens books/exhibition catalogues yielded no exact information about whether he used iron for his maquettes or indeed detailed information on his working process. However, most sculptors work their way from initial drawings to smaller experimental figures before arriving at the final artwork. A preliminary work, not intended for sale or exhibition, might not be signed. Probably research in Paris and/ or using French art magazines at that time might yield relevant information. Provenance: Private Pennsylvania Collection. Size: 6.5'' x 4'' x 4'' (17 x 10 x 10 cm). $1400-1800 Start: $700

82. Manner of Robert Winthrop Chanler (1872-1930) "Undersea Life," oil and gold leaf on Masonite, not signed. Framed. Chanler is known for his fantastical folding screens depicting exotic animals in movement, often in combat. He exhibited over a dozen screens in the 1913 Armory Show. A member of the Woodstock, NY art colony, he was known for his eccentric behavior. His home/studio in New York City was named the House of Fantasy due to the unconventional and even surreal decoration and events that transpired there. He is represented in the Whitney Museum, Metropolitan Museum, National Gallery, and the Heckscher Museum. Much of his body of work remains with his descendants or in the homes of the wealthy industrialists who commissioned his art to decorate their homes, notably Vizcaya, in Miami. Size: 17.5'' x 23.5'', 44 x 60 cm (sight); 21.5'' x 27.5'', 55 x 70 cm (frame). Provenance: Joshua Lowenfels; Private Pennsylvania Collection. $400-600 Start: $200 83. Roland Poska was a pioneer of handmade paper in the world of contemporary art. Born in Scotland in 1938 he immigrated to the United States in 1948 with his Lithuanian parents, settling in Rockford, Illinois. The artist's paintings are accumulated works made of cotton fibers churned with pure powdered pigments--colorful arrangements that have sculptural attributes and which he referred to as "Papestries." Poska also created sculptures from his handmade cotton paper called "Sentinels." With the textures and appearance of vibrantly hued felts, these pieces are as idiosyncratic as the process, some featuring pastoral scenery of houses and sunsets, and others with abstractly radiating circles and organic shapes. $200-400 Start: $100 84. Research in the archives at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts yields a magazine clipping indicating that there was either a biographical article on the artist showing this painting, or that it was exhibited at a gallery or museum show. Unfortunately no information as to date or magazine was given with the clipping. Granger was closely associated with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, studying under modernist painters Hugh Breckenridge, whose influence is obvious in this painting. She won travel awards in 1915 and 1916 and this painting surely dates to that time. An annual award for portrait painting is given by the Fellowship of the PAFA in her name. In 1927 she had a joint exhibition with Glenn O. Coleman at the Whitney Studio Club, precursor to the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was best known for paintings of Native Americans. Granger was an art teacher for many years at the Irwin School, Wynnewood, PA. $1600-2000 Start: $800 135. American School, Early 20th C. Hunt Diederich is one of the most prominent American sculptors of the 20th century. A nephew of the famous architect Richard Morris Hunt and painter William Morris Hunt, he grew up in Germany and Boston. Diederich was a close friend of sculptor Paul Manship, the leading American Art Deco sculptor. Diederich studied in Europe but had his career largely in the United States. He is noted for playful figures of mythological personages and above all of horses and dogs; he was a gifted horseman and hunter. He invented a unique style of flat silhouettes in sheet metal or paper cutouts. His designs for wrought iron gates, fountains, fire screens, and window grates were commissioned by many wealthy collectors in New York City and Long Island, including Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. He is represented in museums across the country, including the Metropolitan Museum, Whitney Museum, Phillips Collection, and Detroit Institute of Arts. No other example of this sculpture is known. 151. Cora Richardson (American, 19th C.) Untitled Aesthetic Movement Portrait (The Musician), 1884, oil on canvas, signed and dated. Size: 50.25'' x 33.25'', (128 x 84 cm). Provenance: Rifkin Fine Arts; Collection of Dr. Christine I. Oaklander. Richardson was a student of the sculptor, writer, and anatomist William Rimmer at Cooper Institute's School for Design. Rimmer was director of the school and actively encouraged and shaped the careers of women most of whom are not identified. Since Rimmer died in 1879, Richardson probably studied with him in the 1870s, given the 1884 date of the current figural painting. She exhibited three times at the prestigious National Academy of Design as well as having success exhibiting in Boston. This large painting sits squarely in the period style known as the Aesthetic Movement with its inclusion of Japanese motifs of leaves and flowers. The welldressed young woman wears an expensive silk dress and a lavishly-decorated hat is laid on a table behind her. Depiction of a sitter with a stringed instrument such as banjo, guitar, or the like is also associated with Aesthetic Movement imagery. Richardson would no doubt have been influenced by William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent, known for their lush, confident portraits of wealthy society women dressed in all of their splendor. Accompanied by a folder of printed material chronicling the artist's career. Richardson is a rediscovered woman artist who has unjustly fallen into obscurity. $1000-2000 Start: $500

Published: https://www. christineisabelleoaklander.com/bradleywalkertomlinillustration. Size: 30'' x 22'', 76 x 56 cm (sight); 33'' x 25.25'', 84 x 64 cm (frame) Provenance: Collection of Dr. Christine I. Oaklander. This watercolor fits into a group of paintings commissioned by Conde Nast for the cover of House & Garden magazine (published in 1926). It demonstrates cross-fertilization with Charles Sheeler's mildly abstract paintings of the same period and an experimentation with Cubism under the influence of Cezanne. Sheeler was also working as a fine art and fashion photographer for Conde Nast at that time. Compositionally, this group for House & Garden covers shows bouquets of flowers with one having close parallels: a bouquet sitting on a ladderback chair, with gardening shears balanced on the chair's seat. Colors are similar (with one exception) and the diagonal perspective with the floral arrangement against the backdrop of a window, also are strikingly similar (with one exception) The large size of this painting, along with publishers' marks on the back add further confirmation to the attribution.Although he started out as a talented illustrator during the tail end of the Golden Age of Illustration, Tomlin gradually turned toward abstraction, becoming a member of the Abstract Expressionism period style. His work is found in numerous museums and he has been the subject of two important solo exhibitions, at the Samuel Dorsky Museum and the Hofstra University Museum. $2000-3000 Start: $1000

316. David Shrigley (British, b. 1968) Set of 9 Exhibition posters. Unframed. Each: 31.5'' x 23.5'' (80 x 60 cm). David Shrigley OBE, is an artist and illustrator best known for his mordantly humorous cartoons. Self-branded as an outsider in the art world, Shrigley is known for making flat compositions that take on the inconsequential, the bizarre, and the disquieting elements of everyday life. Like the musings of a very wise child displaying the wit and humor of a seasoned observer of the adult world, his illustrations feature crossed-out words, scribbled, uneven lines, and darkly funny aphorisms about the world. Each size: 31.5'' x 23.75'', 80 x 60 cm. $600-1200 Start: $300 317. Banksy (British, b. 1973) "Greenpeace: Save or Delete," 2002, offset lithograph on semi-gloss paper. This poster was commissioned by Greenpeace to highlight the environmental problem of global deforestation. It features famous Disney characters from "The Jungle Book" bound, blindfolded and facing the axe, set within a photograph of a devastated forest. Once printed, it was never used due to litigation threats by Disney. Unframed. Size: 17'' x 23.5'', 43 x 60 cm (sheet). Banksy is one of the most well-known, if anonymous, street artists working today. Banksy, the pseudonym adopted by the artist, guards his privacy and the details of his life, which remain largely unknown to the public. He initially garnered fame for his graffiti, which combines spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor. His work first began appearing on walls in and around Bristol and London's Shoreditch district during the mid-1990s, and he has since gone on to achieve world-wide fame. Size: 1) 11.75'' x 8.5'', 30 x 22 cm; 2) 16.5'' x 23.5'', 42 x 60 cm. $800-1200 Start: $400 57

318. Banksy (British, b. 1973) Two Di Faced Tenners. Size: 2.75'' x 5.25'', 7 x 13 cm (each sight); 13.5'' x 12.25'', 34 x 31 cm (frame). "Di Faced" is a pun on the word 'defaced' and refers to the fact that here Banksy has altered the familiar £10 British note by replacing the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with that of the late Princess Diana. Instead of 'Bank of England', the note reads, 'Banksy of England'. Under the banner, an inscription reads, 'I promise to pay the bearer on demand the ultimate price', a reference to the fate of the late Princess, at the hands of the media. The reverse side of the print remains mainly unchanged except for the motto 'Trust No One' written in the lower-right corner, beneath the portrait of Charles Darwin. Double-framed together in one frame. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE The property offered and sold through New Material Culture, Inc.’s (hereinafter MC) public auctions (hereinafter the Property) shall be offered and sold pursuant to the terms and conditions set forth below (hereinafter the Agreement). This Agreement constitutes the complete statement of the terms and conditions pursuant to which all Property is offered for sale. By bidding at the auction, whether in person, by agent, in writing, by telephone, internet bid or any other means, the buyer of the Property (hereinafter the Buyer) agrees to be bound by this Agreement. PROPERTY SOLD AS IS. Except as expressly stated below in the LIMITED RIGHT OF RESCISSION, all Property is sold as is, where is, with all faults. Neither MC nor any consignor makes any guarantees, warranties or representations, expressed or implied with respect to the Property or the correctness of the catalogue or any other description of the Property. In no event shall MC or the consignor be responsible for the correctness, nor be deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin or condition of the Property. No statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a guarantee, warranty or representation. LIMITED RIGHT OF RESCISSION. With regard ONLY to descriptions of fine art in which a specific artist is named as the artist, all information contained in the catalogue concerning the authenticity of said Property is guaranteed for a period of 30 days from the date of the sale. If, within that 30 day period, Buyer has complied with all Terms and Conditions of Sale regarding timely payment and collection of said Property and would like to dispute the authenticity of said Property, Buyer can submit, at his own expense, two written professional opinions regarding authenticity by recognized authenticators, jointly approved by both MC and Buyer. In the event said Property is judged inauthentic by both expert authenticators, said Property may be returned if it is in the same condition as at time of sale and the Buyer’s full purchase price will be refunded. Refunds shall not include cost of transportation, insurance or other expenses that Buyer may have incurred. This limited right of rescission is available only to the original auction Buyer and does not extend or transfer to any subsequent owner, heir, agent transferee or any other third party. WITHDRAWAL OF PROPERTY. MC reserves the right to withdraw any Property at any time for any reason and to default any sale in the event of an error or dispute. COPYRIGHT AND REPRODUCTION RIGHTS. MC and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the Buyer will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any Property sold. MC expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the Property sold in the catalogue. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for MC relating to Property, including the contents of the catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of MC and shall not be used by the Buyer, nor by anyone else, without MCs prior written consent. EXAMINATION OF PROPERTY. All Property is available for examination prior to bidding. The Buyers bidding signifies that the Buyer has examined the Property as fully as desired or has chosen not to examine the Property. MC recommends that prospective bidders examine all items in which they have an interest prior to bidding.

BIDDING RESERVES. Some of the Property in the sale is offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and MC below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the low estimates listed. Bidding will begin at a price appropriate in the auctioneers discretion. The auctioneer always reserves the right to withdraw Property for any reason he deems appropriate. ORDER OF BIDS. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue. MC reserves the right to determine any and all matters regarding the order, precedence or appropriate increment of bids or the constitution of lots. ABSENTEE AND PHONE BIDDING. Absentee and phone bidding are permitted by prospective bidders who cannot be present at the auction. Please complete the Absentee Bid and/or Phone Reservation form. Absentee bids are executed competitively and confidentially. All reservations for phone bidding are held in the strictest confidence and must be received by 5 pm EST the day before the auction. No additional phone bids will be accepted at such time including additions when speaking with a staff person on the phone. Written absentee bids may be submitted on the Absentee Bid Form up to 30 lots before the item comes up for auction. Leaving an absentee or phone bid on a lot indicates your willingness to open the bidding at one half the printed estimate, and gives the auctioneer the authority to open the bidding at that level, or to open the bidding on a lot with a printed reserve at the reserve price. In the case of identical absentee bids, the bid received first will prevail. Bids left on liveauctioneers.com are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction and the order in which they are received is not a factor. CUT BIDS. We do not accept cut bids, (bids less than the last interval) from the floor or from absentee bidders including phone and internet bidders. Thus, it is possible that a lot could go to another bidder for less than an absentee bid. For example, if the bids are progressing in $10 dollar increments and an absentee falls at a $5 increment we will not take the bid since it is less than the $10 increment. Following are general guidelines for bidding increments: $0-$100 by $25 increments $100-$500 by $25 increments $500-$1,000 by $50 increments $1,000 $3,000 by $100 increments $3,000-$5,000 by $250 increments $5,000-$10,000 by $500 increments $10,000-$30,000 by $1,000 increments $30,000-$50,000 by $2,500 increments $50,000-$100,000 by $5,000 increments $100,000-$200,000 by $10,000 increments Above $200,000 auctioneers discretion

The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. At such time as the auctioneer has declared Property sold to a given Buyer, said Buyer thereupon assumes full risk and responsibility for the Property, agrees to sign any requested confirmation of purchase, and agrees to pay the full price, plus Buyers Premium, therefore or such part, upon such terms as MC may require. All Property purchased must be paid for no later than 5 pm EST on the seventh business day following the sale. Items not collected or shipped by the 15th day following the sale will incur storage fees at a rate of $5.00 per lot per day regardless of the size or value of the lot. Items not collected by the 30th day following the sale may be sold by MC or sent by MC to a public warehouse at the sole risk of, and charge to, the Buyer and MC may prohibit the Buyer from participating, directly or indirectly, as a bidder or purchaser in any future sale. No Property may be removed from MCs premises until the Buyer has paid in full the purchase price including Buyers premium. MC shall have no liability for any damage to Property left on its premises after the auction. A defaulting Buyer will be deemed to have granted and assigned to MC a continuing security interest of first priority in any Property or money of, or owing to such Buyer in MCs possession, and MC may retain and apply such Property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to MC. MC shall have all of the rights accorded a secured party under the Pennsylvania Uniform Commercial Code. PACKING AND SHIPPING. Buyer agrees that packing and shipping are done at the Buyers risk and that Buyer will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. Shipping is the sole responsibility of the Buyer. MC will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items. Upon request, MC will provide a list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. TAXES. All purchases are subject to Pennsylvania sales tax unless the Buyer possesses a Pennsylvania sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Pennsylvania if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Pennsylvania exemption number prior to the auction. Buyer is responsible for any and all tariffs, taxes and assessments that might be made on the Property. International Buyers are responsible for tariffs, taxes, or assessments of shipped items to the Buyers country. IMPORT/EXPORT RESTRICTIONS. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the United States, such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of Property from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the Buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of said Property. BUYERS BREACH. If the Buyer breaches any of its obligations under this Agreement, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all Property for which it is the highest successful bidder, MC may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the Buyer to the damages caused by the Buyers breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the Buyer has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the Buyer liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. GOVERNING LAW. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The Buyer agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this Agreement may be brought, and any action against MC in connection with the transactions contemplated by this Agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or any federal court sitting therein. The Buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit. AMENDMENTS TO TERMS AND CONDITIONS. No claimed modification or amendment of this Agreement on the part of any party shall be deemed extant, enforceable or provable unless it is in writing that has been signed by the parties to this Agreement. No course of dealing and no delay or omission on the part of MC in exercising any right under this Agreement shall operate as a waiver of such right or any other right and waiver on any one or more occasions shall not be construed as a bar to or waiver of any right or remedy of MC on any future occasion. © 2021 Material Culture, All Rights Reserved
