Metal Minded: travelling inspiration until the 16th of May in Eindhoven Sheet material with a pattern created through a self organising principle copied from nature. Interactive products powered by conductive metals. The smallest ‘nano-chair’, captured in titanium and bicycle mudguards with images, made from a combination of plastic and aluminium. The Metal Company Brabant (MCB) got inspired by above mentioned and other innovations shown at the travelling exhibition Metal Minded, that they have photographed a selection of the products exhibited. These images will illustrate the next annual report of the MCB. (photography Francois Eyck) Would you also like to get caught by materials innovation? Metal Minded is open for visits until the 16th of May at the Yksi Expo, part of the Design Huis in Eindhoven, and runs in parallel with the exhibition Colour. Open: Tuesday - Sunday, 11.00 – 17.30 hours.
Sustainable growth, sustainable cooperation The exhibition Rematerialize the future by Material Sense welcomed some new materials and products. This time: organic stools by Annette Huizing made from tissue paper and a new implementation of the Gecko-textile by Baumann/Agentuur 99. Allready 15.000 visitors have visited the International Center for Sustainable Excellence at the Lighttower in Eindhoven (ICSE). The exhibited materials (for sustainable product development) are freely watched and touched; the actual purpose of the exhibition. Lots of people are being triggered and get inspired to create new applications! Material Sense carries out the importance of materials in sustainable product development on a wider scale. We have build a huge network involving companies, researchers and designers with great interest in our information. The constant growth of our network strengthens our sustainable goal: sharing and spreading the knowledge of materials and products. That is why Material Sense is deliberately seeking for cooperation with business partners. Would you like to attract attention for your newest developments? And join forces to communicate and design a sustainable society? Team Material Sense would be happy to talk to you about the possibilities. mail@materialsense.com www.materialsense.com 1 ∙ newsletter spring 2010 material sense
New Materials “In the spotlight” Winners: iF Material Awards 2010 Innovation and quality. Key words for the iF awards, the important international design awards with six categories; one of them is the iF material award. Awarded submissions for 2010 in this category are recently presented at the annual iF-booth at the Hannover Fair. Material Sense was there to select the most inspiring materials. “Nook” for example: a folded, extremely light weight stool that makes use of the material characteristics of Varioline in a smart way. Another one: a necklace, existing out of small titanium modules that can be snapped together, made by a laser melting technique. Or: an interesting extern harddisk cover, made out of environmentally friendly plastic with a tactile surface structure inspired by the leaves of baobab plants. The iF winners and material descriptions can be found at Material Sense’s website. Illuminated example: Bioluminescence Living micro organisms emit light activated by human behaviour. This fascinating installation Bioluminescence is a lightning example of the cooperation between the Faculty of Biology from the University of Marburg and the Faculty of Design in Offenbach. Nicola Burggraf designed this installation for her Master-thesis; it was obvious that she received a Light Award too. For more information check new materials.
