newsletter spring 2013 Collaboration in the field of textiles ‘The Consious Designer’ New minor FOOD for Design Academy Next stop for Moving Materials with Masterclass; Lancaster - UK In the spotlight: three different textile views
Collaboration in the field of Textiles How can you tap into the innovative potential of creative people and apply it in a valuable way into your product? How will the idea of crossover cooperation be turned into reality? These questions were put on the table in the inspiring breakfast sessions of Textile campus Tio3 at Ronse, Belgium. Simone de Waart was invited for a guest lecture to share her experiences from the variety of projects she has realized and where the worlds of industries, research and design were connected. Material Sense has developed methods for the different forms of collaboration. These example cases reflect that collaborations are not always easy, but above all challenging and provide great results! In September this session will be followed up by a workshop by Material Sense for Tio3. The breakfast took part in the middle of the first Young Textiles exhibition, presenting a beautiful selection of work by three young textile designers. Read more >
‘The Consious Designer’ Recently the 3rd years students of LAB from Design Academy Eindhoven, have presented their projects. Simone de Waart van Material Sense initiated en lectured this semester this new training for Design Academy. The focus was on specific awareness creation of the materialization process and cyclic thinking about products in general. Students investigated in how processes in product design can be used in an utmost innovative way. This research and explorations resulted in a collection of inspiring possibilities: from a simplified reuse of raw materials for 3D printing techniques, to smart assembly for chairs and completely redesigned manufacturing for a traditional material like sisal. “It appears to be not so easy to redesign a previous designed concept in a sustainable way” de Waart explains. “The more proud I am about the results the students have presented.” A lot of them show great potential for further development. New minor FOOD for Design Academy The cyclic thinking in concept and product design initiated for the Conscious Designer will get a great follow up within Design Academy’s education. Simone de Waart was asked to take part of the development team for the first FOOD minor. Design and Design thinking will lead the investigation by students for the broad, but inspiring subject of Food: aspects like sensorial experience, materiality, consumer behavior, sustainability, rituals and social enhancement will be part of the topic. The first results will be presented by the students, before summer.
Moving Materials with Masterclass at Lancaster - UK Moving Materials will move on to the next location of one of our partners: Lancaster University in the UK. The subtheme of “Smart processing” will be further investigated through hands on explorations in a masterclass around Lasercutting. Designers and engineers will work with familiar and new materials to experiment with the laser manufacturing technology. Material Sense develops this Master class in collaboration with the people of Lancaster University. We look forward to the results, which will be taken on board when the exhibition moves further to the next location. Sound Curtain Diffus Design created an aesthetic modular curtain system, where flat fabric surfaces function as speakers and are covered with LEDs. A new processing technique is used to embroider the soft circuits and make the separate modules interchangeable – and create a curtain according to your own needs and taste.
