Material Sense

This Material Sense newsletter focuses on the Dutch Design Week 2013. From the 19th till the 27th of October 2013 the audience can visit exhibitions and presentations around the theme ‘Now Future’. Visitors can experience how the world of tomorrow is made today. This future perspective fits well the vision of Material Sense as can be seen in the activities they are involved in during this edition of the Dutch Design Week at Eindhoven.

Material Sense (2002) is an independent organisation for materials innovation. Material Sense researches, develops and experiments with the materiality of products and our environment. They make the world of materials visible and tangible through amongst others travelling exhibitions, lectures, workshops and self-developed methods to experience the value of materials. Material Sense functions as a catalyst within the the connection with designers, scientists, educational institutes and innovative companies. Material Sense advices in the search for new materials and technologies. Within this search the focus lies on sensorial qualities for the development of products with an utmost experience within a sustainable society.

Bio based Wunderkammer

Curators Simone de Waart and Jalila Essaïdi catalysed the collaboration between artists, designers, the Green Chemistry Campus and Biobased Delta. Together they discovered various new possibilities of bio based materials. In the Bio based Wunderkammer, you can be astounded by the results presented in the Wunderkammer. Read more >

Collaboration-S: Out of home

‘Satelliet Meubelen’ challenged students and graduates to design a furniture concept with the material Resysta. Resysta is a technical and ecological alternative for wood; made out of rice brans, halite, and mineral oils. The jury, with among others Simone de Waart from Material Sense, judged the submissions and selected the 11 finalists. On Saturday the 19th of October, the winner of the challenge will be announced and the exhibition of the results can be visited.

Moving Materials: The Laser Cutting Edition

What are the possibilities of laser cutting within the world of design? In a master class in Lancaster (UK), participants experimented with engraving, flexibility and the creation of connections through laser cutting. The Moving Materials master class was developed and guided by Simone de Waart from Material Sense in collaboration with the Dutch company Snijlab. Exhibition Taiwanese Design

De creative residency of Eindhoven brings an international initiative to the Dutch Design Week. The textiles - with graphic 3d prints - of the Taiwanese designer Tri Nouio were shown earlier in the Moving Materials exhibition. During the Dutch Design Week 2013 his work and two other Taiwanese designers are on display in the exhibition space ‘Complex’ at the Generaal Bothastraat in Eindhoven (NL).
