Moving materials moves on, with new additions, from Kortrijk to Luxembourg. This upcoming year we will give form to our own innovation: we will start our new initiative Material Sense Lab.

Material Sense
Lecture and workshop for Centro Mexico City Invited by design Education Centro, Simone de Waart travelled to Mexico City in November, to train insight in our way of thinking about sensorial experiences in materialization. She gave an introduction lecture and a workshop for a selected group of students from Fashion, Product design and Interior architecture. In mixed teams the group explored materials around the theme 'Skins'. Skins were taken as a metaphor for the communicative outer layer of a wearable, product or within a space. The students investigated in authentic local natural materials combined with new techniques to value qualities, sensorial characteristics and their meaning. read more>
Moving Materials presents innovative materials at Luxembourg This year, Moving Materials exhibition will be displayed at our partner country Luxembourg for the first time. At ‘Forum Da Vinci’ from the 25th of April until the 22nd of May 2014, visitors can enjoy the entire collection that has grown since 2012. Marjan van Aubel designed an innovative addition: a closet that acts like a battery charger. The charging technology is based on the photosynthesis of plants. The designer constructed a photovoltaic layer of solar cells in each piece of tableware (glasses). The generated power can be used to charge many products, from mobiles to light sources. Other additional projects are the ‘Weld Bag’ by Joris de Groot and ‘Changeables’ by Eva Pannecoucke. More can be read at the end of this newsletter. read more>
Material Sense (2002) is an independent organisation for material innovation. Material Sense researches, develops and experiments with the materiality of products and environment. They make the world of materials visible and tangible through among others travelling exhibitions, lectures, workshops and self-developed methods to experience the value of materials. Material Sense functions as a catalyst within the connection with designers, scientists, educational institutes and innovative companies. They advice in the search for new materials and technologies. Within this search the focus lies on sensorial qualities for the development of products with the most optimal experience within a sustainable society.

Highlights exhibitions 2013 In November and December, Moving Materials was shown at Kortrijk for the 2nd time. The focus of this edition was on new manufacturing processes with lighter materials or less materials usage in general, the revalue of materials or replacement by local sources. (‘Rematerialize the Future’) The 3D printed Cellular Loop chair by Anke Bernotat is the result of the research project Bionic Manufacturing’ in collaboration with Fraunhofer UMSICHT. Kortrijk was the first location to present this chair, inspired by the moebius strip principle. During Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven Moving Materials was centred around laser cutting results of the workshop in Lancaster. Material Sense guided this workshop in collaboration with Snijlab. Participants experimented with surface treatments, joints, and flexibility. Simone de Waart was co-curator of the Bio Based Wunderkammer. In the film you will see the pictured images for the future sprouted from this initiative.
Material inspirations: three fashionable items Weld Bag To find innovation within the existing industry; this ambition drives designer Joris de Groot to reinterpret craftsmanship. He uses pvc materials and combines the folding forms of plastic bags with the industrial welding technique used in rain coats. The result: beautiful bags for sports, beach, shopping and your laptop. read more>
Changeables Eva Pannecoucke designed a do-it-yourself-tool for upcycling of materials. With the modular system to make your own bags, she anticipated future reuse and the use of PLA virgin materials. read more>
Pronkpakken ‘Pronkpakken’ Swimwear for flaunting is not only meant to swim but you want to be seen it the swimwear of Ionie Chamilaki. Her collection is inspired by swim wear dating from the 1920’s. In her designs she made use of laser cutting for the striking rubber elements. read more>
Introduction Material Sense Lab In what manner can materials contribute to our sustainable society? Besides Material Sense’s network function, we admire to provide answers to this question in a collaboration setting. In 2014 we will start with Material Sense Lab. This initiative for research and experiments is made possible by Foundation DOEN.
