Material Sense has two scoops during the Dutch Design Week (18 to 26 October). They are introducing Material Sense LAB via the Forging the Future exhibition and they are showing for the first time in the wonderful 'Kruisruimte' in their own Complex. Will we be seeing you this year?
Exhibition Forging the Future
Material Sense
Instigating discussion and amazement; that's what Material Sense wants to achieve with the Forging the Future exhibition. Eight especially selected designers, new talents, manufacturers and researchers have put their hearts into imagining the smart direction products will take in a desirable future.
Material Sense (2002) is an independent organization for materials innovation. The organization plays various roles. They make the world of materials visible and tangible. E.g. in the travelling themed exhibitions, lectures, workshops and through methods by Material Sense directed at experiencing the value of materials. They advise those looking for new materials and technologies, or for the sensorial qualities of products for an optimal experience, within a sustainable society.
We reveal a little of what you can see under the beautiful high arches of the 'Kruisruimte'. Michelle Baggerman has produced wonderful 'Renacimiento' lace with Mexican craftspeople. The yarn is made of recycled plastic carrier bags. 'Ambio' (Teresa van Dongen) is a light fixture that takes advantage of bio-luminescent bacteria. For 'Net-Work' (Interface) locals in the Philippines and Cameroon sell discarded fishing nets, giving the nets a second life as greatlooking, sustainable carpet tiles. Material Sense LAB
Introducing Material Sense LAB Forging the Future is the prelude to a new Material Sense initiative: the Material Sense LAB. In the LAB, we are researching how bio-based plastics can become esthetical, valuable alternatives to products. We want this leads to lead to a new way of thinking and new forms of co-operation; thereby contributing to the development of a circular economy.
In Material Sense LAB, Material Sense fulfils a catalysing and connecting role based on their materials expertise and design strengths. Working with a selected group of designers, scientists and innovative companies, Material Sense develops and experiments with the materiality of products for the circular economy. In this way, materials are involved in an early stage in the designs of future products. New co-operations and business models are created, and Material Sense offers supports in order to facilitate a

Everything is fixable! We have already introduced you to the material 'Sugru'. This rubber-like clay adheres to almost anything and forms a strong and flexible material in a short time. When you visit Forging the Future, bring a damaged plate or cup and give it a new lease on life. Or let your creativity run away with you to turn an existing item into something completely different. You will fix something for a small sum! Read more>
