newsletter summer 2015 This newsletter presents a view on the inspiring visit to an Asian country in transition: Taiwan. The DutchTaiwanese collaboration program, with the successful exhibition Cure & Care, has delivered Simone de Waart the invitation to share her expertise with designers, students and the (manufacturing)industry.
Material Sense
Workshop 'The Value of Materials & Making', Taipei Made in Taiwan. Many of us are familiar with this expression for mass production from the country. But the term 'making' in itself gets another meaning worldwide, for which also Taiwan needs to formulate her own answers. Simone de Waart investigated the hidden qualities through collaboration with Taiwanese designers and representatives of the making industries. read more>
Material Sense (2002) is an independent orga nization for materials inno vation. The organi zation plays various roles. They make the world of materials visible and tangible. E.g. in the travel ling themed exhi bitions, lectures, work shops and through methods by Material Sense directed at expe riencing the value of materials. They advise those looking for new materials and tech nologies, or for the sensorial qualities of products for an optimal experience, within a sustainable society.
Material Sense LAB Dutch Design Dialogue, Taipei The Dutch Design Post acts as a connecter between The Netherlands and Taiwan, for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of design. Together with NTIO (the Dutch Trade and Investment Office) they organise Dutch Design Dialogues. Simone de Waart has given a presentation for the design community in Taipei. Her proven method for sensorial materials experience in design stood central in her lecture. read more>

Agenda Exhibition Cure & Care 31 May 28 June Máxima Medical Centre, Veldhoven (NL)
‘Please Touch’: exhibition about tactile materials experience, Tainan Materials Experience as driver for the design process: the by Material Sense developed teaching method did pay off also at National Chenk Kung University in Tainan. In a three weeks course Simone guided the teams of students and entrepreneurs in the process of designing from a touch (tactile) experience perspective. The results of the teams were presented in an exhibition with the provocative title 'Please Touch'. read more>

Cure & Care exhibition at Máxima Medical Centre On display in the Netherlands, only until Sunday the 28th of June: the exhibition Cure & Care: Quality of Life. Design highlights uit Taiwan: All that glitters is not gold We have brought a visit to the silver and goldsmith Tian Guan. He has worked before with Gijs Bakker and at this moment he is working on refined god crowns used within Taiwanese temples. Every element is made by hand. But that it is not all gold that glitters became clear in the special meeting with Mr Guan. read more>
Big, bigger in the green lung Simone visited the building site of the WeiWuYing Center for the Performing Arts in the city of Khaosiung. The Dutch Mecanoo Architects designed this building – when finished the largest cultural building in Asia. Both the design as well as the construction process are intriguing. read more>
Dipper Designer Whitney Ho brought her design the ‘Dipper’ to the workshop ‘The Value of Materials & Making’. A small and simple design that can be used as a kitchen tool. A stunning example of a design that combines both ease of use and mono materials for a closed loop. read more>
Material Sense on vacation We will be working throughout the summer, but also taking a little time off. We will be back feeling fresh and with a spring in our step, as of August 17. We wish everyone a great summer!
