Exhibition Future Footprints

Material Sense

Material Sense presents the exhibition Future Footprints during DDW 2015. Footprints from the past become an important part of the way forward. Selected designers and artists offer their interpretation of this theme. What could you expect under the soaring arches of the ‘Kruisruimte’ (or cross room) in the DDW’s area East? We reveal a little of what you can see.

Material Sense (2002) is an independent organization for materials innovation. The organization plays various roles. They make the world of materials visible and tangible. E.g. in the travelling themed exhibitions, lectures, workshops and through methods by Material Sense directed at experiencing the value of materials. They advise those looking for new materials and technologies, or for the sensorial qualities of products for an optimal experience, within a sustainable society.

Master students, guided by Simone de Waart, at the Faculty of Industrial Design, University of Technology Eindhoven, look how aged products can inspire newly to develop products. In the Unpreventable Agingproject i.e. the designers encased something very temporary – pieces of core fruit – in something very durable; acrylic. With surprising result.

Material Sense LAB What does not comes from a long way off? Material Sense LAB invited Upstyle Industries for Future Footprints. The designers Lizanne Dirkx en Pietro Galgani documented their materials journey from research to design; they have found the right resource for the development of their flat-pack furniture, made from waste streams of local second hand shops. Get inspired!

Hannah Kindlers’ R&D Center for Value Young talent Hannah Kindler, recently graduated at Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, researches during Future Footprints the value of products. Her work R&D Center for Value plays with the exhibited context and the effects it has on the publics’ perception of value. What represents value for you? Drop by and have a dialogue with Hannah!

In Material Sense LAB, Material Sense fulfils a catalysing and connecting role based on their materials expertise and design strengths. Working with a selected group of designers, scientists and innovative companies, Material Sense develops and experiments with the materiality of products for the circular economy. In this way, materials are involved in an early stage in the designs of future products. New co-operations and business models are created, and Material Sense offers supports in order to facilitate a successful market introductions of products developed.
