Successful projects demonstrating waste as resource within housing, public buildings and civic spaces, are setting a challenge to a traditionally risk-averse industry. Despite common integration in some applications, novel resource use depends on trial, acceptance and implementation, relying on innovators who manage the risks, create networks and attract media and industry attention.
Sustainable public procurement for civic buildings provides opportunities for the public-sector to champion locally produced, recycled content building materials and provides valuable demonstration spaces. Establishing diverse models capable of scalable manufacturing from local waste requires infrastructure investment (beyond Energy from Waste) plus support and collaboration with builders, developers and clients to develop markets. Creating spaces for beta testing models for production, application and demonstration will play a critical role in achieving local and national planning policy objectives and meeting global goals.
