Producteur Open Show Switzerland

Les soirées mensuelles Open Show continuent d’accroître leur popularité en 2013 avec plus de 100 coproducteurs dévoués dans 33 villes de 16 pays à travers le monde. Ces soirées donnent la parole aux photographes et au public afin de créer un espace d’échange interactif autour d’une réflexion engagée et animée sur les projets présentés, dans une ambiance détendue et conviviale.

Les auteurs ont ainsi une véritable opportunité de recevoir de précieux conseils et d’appréhender sous un autre regard leur travail. Le public, quant à lui, a directement accès aux coulisses du processus de création et participe ouvertement aux discussions. Au cours de nos six dernières soirées Open Show Switzerland, vingt-six photographes et vidéastes professionnels, étudiants et amateurs ont ainsi pu s’exprimer et exposer leur projet, dans six lieux et villes différentes de Suisse.

A l’image de l’édition 2012, ce nouveau numéro est un catalogue référençant ces vingt-six artistes. Il est plus riche dans son contenu avec davantage de pages par pho-

Open Show’s monthly evenings have grown in popularity in 2013, with over 100 dedicated co-producers in 33 cities and 16 countries throughout the world. These evenings are an opportunity for photographers and for the audience to engage in a lively interactive debate over the featured projects in a friendly atmosphere. The authors thus have a genuine opportunity to receive precious advice and to consider their work under a different light.

And the audience is introduced to the inner layers of the creative process and invited to discuss openly. Thus, twenty-six professional, student, or amateur photographers and video makers have had the opportunity to introduce their project during our last six Open Show evenings held in six different venues and cities throughout Switzerland.

As with the 2012 edition, this issue features twentyfour projects. It is richer in content, as each project is given a double presentation page. And a prominent actor of the Swiss photography scene, Joerg Bader, Director of

Cette revue est une occasion unique pour ces auteurs d’accroître leur visibilité en Suisse et à l’international, poursuivant notre mission de soutien et d’encouragement aux créateurs d’images fixes et animées. Nous espérons ainsi enrichir la vie culturelle et la documentation de la communauté photographique suisse et permettre à un large public de découvrir et soutenir ces projets.

En 2014, Open Show Switzerland a pour ambition de participer à une réflexion constructive et éducative sur les nouveaux modes de narration visuelle. Ceci dans un contexte numérique totalement inédit où les producteurs d’images doivent s’adapter et se réinventer constamment en suivant au plus près les évolutions techniques et les changements sociaux qu’elles entraînent, notamment sur la façon dont le public reçoit, transmet et consomme cette information visuelle. Le contrôle de leur flux de production de la création à la distribution est maintenant à la portée des auteurs et la fidélisation de leur public devient une valeur ajoutée primordiale dans la monétisation de leurs travaux. L’image du vingtième siècle existait sur papier et représentait un événement qui avait eu lieu. Celle du vingt-et-unième siècle relate le présent, est fluide, sans attache, transmissible instantanément sur toute la planète.

Pursuing its support mission to image-makers, this review is a unique occasion for the twenty-six authors to enhance their visibility in Switzerland and internationally. We hope to contribute to the photographic community’s cultural life and documentation and to allow a larger audience to discover and support these projects.

In 2014, Open Show Switzerland wishes to participate in a constructive and outreaching reflection about new visual narratives. And this, in a totally original digital context in which image-makers constantly need to adapt and reinvent themselves at pace with technical evolutions and the resulting social changes, notably in the way the public receives, exchanges and uses this visual information. Authors now have control over their production flow, from creation to distribution, and their audiences become an essential added value in the promotion of their work. Images in the 20th century existed on paper and reproduced events that had occurred. Those of the 21st century narrate the present, are fluid, without ties, and instantly transferable.

la proposition faite par Natalie Tille, Coup de foudre en EMS, projeté à l’occasion de la session du 13 novembre 2012 à la galerie Focale de Nyon. Venant du travail social et focalisant son activité de productrice d’images principalement sur son lieu de travail, elle nous amène des images bien trop rares pour ne pas les commenter. Elle observe avec pudeur et tendresse les histoires d’amour dans l’EMS où elle travaille. La fraîcheur et la candeur qui se dégagent de ces personnes souvent âgées de plus de 80 ans dévoilent un sujet trop rarement abordé. En ce sens, le travail de Natalie Tille trouve une correspondance avec celui de Almeida et Godonou : l’audace du thème abordé et le passage de l’image fixe aux images en mouvements.

Ces deux positions permettent de dessiner l’arc des positions formelles et thématiques que OPEN SHOW Switzerland permet de découvrir et qu’à mon sens, aucun autre organisme en Suisse ne permet.

Les soirées OPEN SHOW Switzerland en 2013 sont un bel exemple de l’emploi de la photographie dans les temps présents. Bien que la première qualité de la photographie – rendre le réel tangible avec une précision incomparable – domine l’ensemble des travaux montrés à l’occasion des six soirées organisées dans six différentes institutions suisses dédiées à la photographie, la variété des sujets choisis et leur traitement témoigne de la richesse de la production photographique en Suisse en général.

Il est un des mérites de l’association OPEN SHOW Switzerland de s’ouvrir à toutes les propositions possibles.

Ainsi, régulières et enrichissantes sont les découvertes des travaux produits hors des circuits habituels de l’art et de la photographie. Une autre observation pour la cuvée 2013 porte sur un emploi contemporain de la caméra photographique, car depuis le fameux Canon, un seul boîtier suffit pour enregistrer tant l’image fixe que l’image en mouvement. Si auparavant il s’écoulait souvent un certain temps avant que les artistes s’en saisissent, cette analyse ne tient pas dans le cas de Nuno Almeida et Luc Godonou qui à l’occasion de la soirée Open Show Switzerland du 29 mai 2013 au Café culturel de l’anciennegare de Fribourg ont présenté Stop ACTA. Tourné avec un appareil photo, ce court métrage vidéo réalisé et monté comme une course contre la montre sur un rythme haletant, intègre aussi grâce à sa dramaturgie l’image fixe. Mais voilà que les deux compères ne s’arrêtent pas à l’emploi d’un outil justifié par leur récit.

Almeida et Godonou ont aussi le courage de prendre position contre le bien pensant contemporain en attaquant de front la loi ACTA contre le piratage avec leur film/ photo.

Thématiquement et formellement à l’opposé de la « flèche » d’image d’une habilité remarquable envoyé par les deux professionnels Almeida et Godonou, se trouve

The evenings OPEN SHOW Switzerland in 2013 are a perfect example of the use of photography today. While the primary quality of photography – to make the real tangible with incomparable precision – appears from the majority of the works shown on the occasion of the six different evenings held at six different Swiss institutions, the variety of topics and their treatment bear testimony to the richness of the photographic production in Switzerland in general.

One of the merits of the association Open Show Switzerland is to be open to any possible suggestion. Hence, constant and enriching are the discoveries in the works produced away from the mainstream art and photography circles. Another observation about the 2013 submissions deals with a contemporary use of the photographic camera. Indeed, since the launch of the famous Canon camera, both the still and the moving image can be captured with a single camera. While artists seemed to be reluctant to take hold of it, the case does not apply to Nuno Almeida and Luc Godonou who, on the occasion of the Open Show Switzerland session on 29 May 2012 at the Cultural Café in the old train station of Fribourg, presented Stop ACTA. Produced with a photo camera, this short-video realized and edited like a race against the clock at panting pace, also integrates the still image in its dramaturgy. Yet, the two mates went beyond the mere use of a tool justified by their narrative. With their film/photo, Almeida and Godonou also have the courage to take a stand against the actual right thinking, attacking head on the ACTA law against piracy.

Thematically and formally opposite to the remarkably efficient “arrow” images sent by the two professionals Almeida and Godonou is Natalie Tille’s Coup de foudre

S’il n’est aujourd’hui plus possible de séparer les images fixes de celles en mouvement, il devient aussi de plus en plus difficile de vouloir séparer les productions d’images issues d’horizons les plus différents, qu’elles proviennent du monde de la communication ou de celui des écoles d’art, des sciences (humaines et dures confondues) ou d’amateurs. Pas parce que tout se vaut, mais parce que des images porteuses de sens se trouvent à tous les étages de ce grand building qu’est la Culture Visuelle.

BIOGRAPHIE Joerg Bader (1955, Zurich,) artiste, critique d’art, auteur, enseignant et commissaire d’exposition, est directeur du Centre de la Photographie Genève depuis 2001. Il a signé en tant qu’artiste une dizaine d’expositions individuelles et participé à plusieurs expositions de groupe en Suisse et à l’étranger. Ses critiques ont été publiées dans ArtPress, Frog, Lapiz, Kunstforum International, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung et sur France Culture et il a aussi signé des essais sur Balthasar Burkhard, Michel François, Marco Poloni, Gianni Motti, Jules Spinatsch Bruno Serralongue, Patrick Weidmann, Tom Wood et Jeff Wall. Il a été enseignant à la HEAD Genève et à la Schule für Gestaltung Basel et est directeur d’étude à la HEART Perpignan où il enseigne depuis 2002.

Il a par ailleurs monté plus de 80 expositions individuelles et une vingtaine d’expositions thématiques, dont De Coraz(o)n (1999) à Tecla Sala à Barcelone, Représentation du travail/Travail de représentation (2003) et Photo-Trafic (2006) au Centre d’art Contemporain et au Centre de la photographie Genève, La Revanche de l’archive photographique (2010) et fALSEfAKES (2013) au Centre de la Photographie Genève, Open Frame I & II au C.R.A.C. à Sète (2011) et Segue-se Ver O Que Quisesse (2012) à Belo Horizonte.

en EMS, screened on the occasion of the session held on 13 November 2012 at galerie Focale in Nyon. A social worker, she mainly focuses her production of images on her working environment, and the images that she brings us are much too rare not to comment on them.

With humility and tenderness, she captures love stories in the EMS where she works. The freshness and candor that stem from these people, often over 80 years of age, deal with an issue too rarely considered. In a way, there is a correspondence between Nathalie Tille’s images and the work of Almeida and Godonou : the boldness of the issue at stake, and the shift from the still image to the moving image.

Both proposals offer an opportunity to sketch a panorama of the existing formal and thematic positions revealed through Open Show Switzerland, which to my knowledge, no other institution in Switzerland offers.

While it is no longer possible today to separate still and moving images, it has become increasingly difficult to draw lines between the productions of images stemming from clearly different horizons, whether from the worlds of communication, art schools, sciences (both humanities and “hard” sciences), or amateurs. Not because they are all worth the same, but because meaningful images can be discovered in every corner of this great Visual Culture building.

BIOGRAPHY Joerg Bader (1955, Zurich,) artist, art critic, author, professor and curator, is the Director of the Centre de la Photographie Genève since 2001. As an artist, he’s had a dozen individual shows and took part in several groupshows both in Switzerland and internationally. As a critic, he collaborated with Artpress, Frog, Lapiz, Kunstforum International, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and with France Culture and authored essays about Balthasar Burkhard, Michel François, Marco Poloni, Gianni Motti, Jules Spinatsch Bruno Serralongue, Patrick Weidmann, Tom Wood and Jeff Wall.

He taught at HEAD Geneva, as well as at the Schule für Gestaltung Basel and is Head of research at HEART Perpignan where he is a professor since 2002. Your projects, whether in progress or finalized, be they committed documentary or artistically creative, can be submitted in two formats : a series of twenty images or a multimedia film four- to eight-minute long. The series must be coherent and deal with a single theme.

Le Festival des arts visuels Images de Vevey est le premier festival de photographie en plein air de Suisse. Il produit tous les deux ans des expositions inédites de photographie monumentale dans les rues de Vevey. Il propose aussi de nombreuses expositions dans divers lieux de la région dédiés à l’image et présente les lauréats des deux concours qu’il organise: le Grand Prix international de photographie de Vevey et le Grand Prix européen du premier film.

The Vevey Visual Arts Festival Images is Switzerland’s first outdoor photography festival. Every other year, it produces original monumental photography exhibitions in the streets of Vevey, along with numerous indoor exhibitions at various local institutions dedicated to the image. The festival is also an opportunity to introduce the winning projects of the two competitions it organizes: the Vevey International Photo Award and the European First Film Award.

Entièrement gratuit, le Festival Images est à la fois un véritable musée à ciel ouvert et une plate- forme de qualité pour les artistes suisses et internationaux. Pour l’édition de 2012, plus de 60 expositions et de nombreux évènements ont accueilli plus de 47’000 visiteurs en intérieur.

Entirely free, the Festival Images is a true outdoor museum and a quality platform for both Swiss and international artists. For its 2012 edition, more than 60 exhibitions and a large number of events were organized, welcoming over 47 000 indoor visitors.

BIOGRAPHIE Citoyenne suisse née en 1981, Sarah est diplômée de l’Ecole de photographie de Vevey depuis 2003 ; elle vit et travaille en Suisse où elle est membre de NEAR et du Comité de la Galerie Focale.

A Swiss citizen born in 1981, Sarah graduated from the Vevey School of photography in 2003; she lives and works in Switzerland where she is a member of NEAR and of Galerie Focale’s board committee.

Le travail de Sarah Carp part d’une recherche intime et contemplative de son entourage immédiat. Une documentation quotidienne qui laisse une place au doute et à une multitude d’ouvertures possibles. Au travers de séries mêlant portraits, paysages et éléments architecturaux, elle s’intéresse à la nature et au sens de l’humanité. Les images réalisées de manière instinctive se situent à la croisée du reportage et de la mise en scène.

Sarah Carp’s work stems from an intimate and contemplative quest into her immediate surroundings; a quotidian documentation that leaves ample space for doubt and for a large array of possibilities. Through series mixing portraits, landscapes and architectural elements, she focuses on nature and the meaning of humanity. The images are produced instinctively, at the crossroad of reportage and staged photography.

PROJET Glendarragh, la vallée des chênes. C’est là, à 30 km au sud de Dublin que je suis partie à la recherche de mes racines. Ma grand-mère d’origine irlandaise, décédée en 1999, y a vécu quelques années avant d’immigrer en Suisse. Au travers de la photographie, j’ai cherché à m’imprégner de son histoire.

Dans cette Irlande rurale, la vie est rythmée par l’humeur des éléments. Les lieux sont habités par des objets insolites et les personnages semblent sortir d’un conte.

La nature environnante, sauvage et mystique, donne l’impression de détenir les secrets de la vie.

PROJECT Glendarragh, the Oak Valley: this is where I traveled, 30 km South of Dublin, in search of my roots. My Irish grandmother, who died in 1999, lived there for a few years before immigrating to Switzerland. I tried to immerse myself in her story through photography.

In this rural Ireland, life takes its beat from the mood of elements. Unusual objects inhabit places and people seem to be coming straight out of some tale. The wild and mystical surrounding nature seems to be holding within the secrets of life.
