India’s remarkable media growth story 12 sep 2011 Melvin Mayer The year was 1820 when social reformer Raja Rammohun Roy brought out three newspapers in Bengali, Persian and English to counter colonial influences and educate Indians about the need for change. Almost two centuries later, that zeal and idealism has exploded into an industry that has 50,000—60,000 print media news publications and 67 news channels. Further helped by forecast-beating earnings from Google delivered after Thursday’s closing bell, having shrugged off the mixed results of jpmorgan Chase and Alcoa over irst week of the season. However, financial stocks are lagging gains following s&p’s downgrade of several French banks, including bnp Paribas, a large bank by assets. Shares of bnp fell 3.3%, and the broader European banks sector is up only fractionally; the us kbw Bank index is up 0.6%. S&P cited ‘lower earnings due to a difficult environment and higher funding costs' as a common factor for the banks.
