In 2012, I hunted the Northwest Territories for 21 days and tagged a dall sheep and moose, but an opportunity on a mountain caribou eluded me. Four years later, I got another chance to return to this incredible landscape and hunt with my 13 year old son, Jackson. We live in Crested Butte, Colorado, so we were able to train hard at high elevations all summer. Each night we honed our shooting skills in preparation for what would be the biggest and most challenging hunt in

We hunted hard for five days before spotting a great bull. Jackson was able to connect, and the next morning we taught him the art of cooking tenderloin on a hot river rock, enjoying our first meat in six days. That afternoon we packed his bull a couple miles to the closest landing strip and waited on the plane to pick up his meat and antlers. As we sat and waited evac, we spotted a huge framed bull about a mile away. Jackson and guide, Andrew Walker, decided to wait for the plane while I headed for the bull. After two river crossings and despite no lack of effort on our end, I was unable to close the distance. As I caught up with Jackson at dark, he told us he had a plan. Instead of hiking two miles back to our tents, he wanted to stay put and sleep on the bare ground. This way we could find the bull again in the morning.

I explained that nights sleeping on the ground were challenging and cold. However, I think he saw it as a rite of passage for a young mountain hunter. Soaking wet from the river crossings, we stripped down, started a fire and settled in for a long, cold night. As daylight approached, I woke shivering in damp clothes, but to my surprise, I spotted a herd of caribou working up the river - and there was my bull! Quickly forgetting about the temperature, I grabbed my bow and ran across the ice cold river to position myself for the shot. It was now or never at 62 yards. I settled my pin and released. The arrow was true, and my team across the river watched in celebration.

Basking in the sun with shoes kicked off is typically the start of a summer beach tale. However, this time the hiking boots were ditched to keep silent, while belly crawling against the dusty, cacti ridden prairies of Big Sky Country with the late summer sun hammering down, all the while creeping inch by inch closer to wary pronghorn. It didn’t take much convincing by my dear friend, Montana native and proficient Big Game hunter, Amanda Caldwell, that I needed to pack up my bow and join her for a DIY spot and stalk antelope hunt. This would be my first big game hunt out west. Right from the first stalk, it was clear, this was going to be a team effort. We were cohesive partners with one of us driving and one scouting the hills or one of us ranging with the other crouching behind some sage ready to draw.

After a few full days of relentless stalks, we each had a full quiver of clean arrows. We had seen plenty of antelope but hadn’t been afforded any shot opportunities. The few bucks that we had become familiar with were getting the best of us. The doubt was starting to build, fatigue was setting in (at least for me), but the mood was kept light with tailgate lunches and cracking jokes. Crossing our fingers, we traveled out further hoping to find a solo buck we could get in on. With Amanda in the driver’s seat and Jordan, our cameraman extraordinaire to my right, we headed towards new ground, exchanging hunting stories and excessive amounts of jerky.

Being used to whitetail hunting back east, managing the varying landscapes of Montana was a success for me in itself. Amanda and I had scaled jagged rock faces with the wind ripping at our faces, crawled through endless prairies of swaying tall grass, darted between farm equipment like agricultural ninjas and made our way through mazes of sagebrush and dried up drainage ditches.
Tricks of the trade.
Mid afternoon, our buck was spotted. We played the wind and bided our time, moving slowly and undetected, within 100 yards. We got to a point where the decision to sit and stay or risk being seen to get closer was inevitable. Luckily, the buck made the decision and started meandering his way toward us. 80 yards, 70 yards, then 65 yards, the questions again were mounting in my mind. “When will he stop? Will he take off? Will he turn and give me a shot?” 60 yards, 50 yards, and then something I couldn’t have predicted happened. The buck bedded down quartering away at 45 yards, presenting me with the perfect scenario. After many stalks, some exhilarating and some exhausting, we had sealed the deal. Amanda and I shared shrieks of excitement and hugs over my first antelope. The feeling was reminiscent of other hunting “firsts,” and the level of gratitude I have for Amanda sharing her knowledge and time with me to accomplish it stands above all. Sometimes after a successful hunt I feel it’s the end of that season or a finalizing feeling. However, this hunt ended with a sentiment of looking ahead, knowing that I would be back again.

Micro plots - food plots that are ½ to 3 acres in size - can be an extremely effective tool for harvesting mature bucks. There are several key components to any successful food plot: location, access, soil, and the food itself. Micro plots serve as a perfect transition area for deer as they head back to bed in the morning and out to feed at night. This is why micro plots are most effective when they are within a couple hundred yards of bedding. In the mornings, 90% of the deer are still out feeding in crop fields, giving you enough time to slip into these stands undetected. In the evenings, you can catch mature bucks on their feet during daylight before heading out to the larger crop fields under the cover of darkness. Shaping these plots in long, narrow rectangles or figure eights allows you to funnel deer into bow range. These elongated plots are typically only 75 yards wide and run east to west, allowing plants maximum sun exposure throughout the day. Strategically cleared access roads allow you to slip in and out without bumping deer, thus reducing pressure. Once your plots are cleared, you will need to switch your focus to soil. As a rule of thumb, I spread and disc three tons of lime per acre, since timber soil can be very acidic from decomposing leaves. Yearly soil samples will help you determine the appropriate mix and amount of fertilizer needed to raise your pH. Remember, the nutrients in the soil is what makes some plants more attractive to deer, so don’t overlook this step.

After dedicating time to the nutrition of your soil, it’s important to consider which plants will be most attractive to deer. I plant a variety of things in my micro plots, but my two favorite are a mix of clover and wheat or brassicas, such as radishes, rape, sugar beets, and turnips. These combinations not only provide significant food tonnage per acre but can also can withstand heavy browse pressure, whereas beans or corn would get wiped out.

As a rule of thumb, I spread and disc three tons of lime per acre, since timber soil can be very acidic from decomposing leaves. Yearly soil samples will help you determine the appropriate mix and amount of fertilizer needed to raise your pH. Remember, the nutrients in the soil is what makes some plants more attractive to deer, so don’t overlook this step.

After dedicating time to the nutrition of your soil, it’s important to consider which plants will be most attractive to deer. I plant a variety of things in my micro plots, but my two favorite are a mix of clover and wheat or brassicas, such as radishes, rape, sugar beets, and turnips. Make a horizontal cut, approximately waist high, 60% of the way through a 6-inch or less diameter tree. Take your time while making the cut to avoid cutting too much of the cambium layer (the pipeline through which food is passed to the rest of the tree). Be intentional with the direction you drop your hinged trees. Keeping passageways throughout downed trees large enough for deer to easily walk through will quickly entice deer to call the new and improved location home. Over 1000 pounds of forage per acre can be created by a well executed hinge cutting strategy. When your cutting is complete, adding conifer species at a rate of 50-100 per acre is a great habitat diversity practice. While hinge cutting is not appropriate for every habitat across the country, it is definitely a viable tool to create attractive daytime habitat for whitetails.

I have been an athlete my entire life and have always been in the gym in some capacity, but about 5 years ago, I refocused those efforts to more intense and archery-specific types of workouts. BACK: This is one of the most important muscle groups for archers. Back muscles help hold the bow steady at full draw, so the stronger the back muscles are, the steadier the shot will be. I try to hold my reps at the end of each set for a second or two to build stamina. Wide-Grip Lat Pulldowns | Bodyweight Pull-Ups | Standing T-Bar Row TRICEPS: Depending on each archer’s form, triceps can be as important as any other muscle group to help your game. The more bend in the bow arm at full draw, the more dependent that person is on the strength of their triceps. In my form, I try to take most of the bend out of my arm. This promotes less stress on my triceps each shot, which gives me more quality shots and better stamina while aiming. Triceps pushdown | Dips | Close grip barbell bench press SHOULDERS: Shoulders are the most common injury to archers. In my shoulder workouts, I focus on mobility. I don’t lift so heavy that I put myself in a position to get hurt. It’s very important to keep the shoulders healthy and strong to maintain longevity in this game. Focus on mobility and don’t overdo it. Side Lateral Raise | Dumbbell Shoulder Press | Arnold Press

CORE / CARDIO: I pair these two on the same days. A strong core will help with aiming and shooting, especially outdoors, where footing is inconsistent. Shooting up or downhill, or anything that puts extra stress on your mid-section at full draw requires a strong core. I also like to get my heart rate around 150-160 and keep it there for about 20 minutes. As archers, we should expect our heart rate to jump on a big buck or in a tournament, so with the right training, it will not affect your shot. Incorporate shooting in with cardio to show yourself exactly what you do right and wrong when you’re shooting uncomfortably. |
