STUDIO LEMApaisajes is a landscape architecture and urban design studio professional and committed to sustainable development, quality of work and customer satisfaction. We work at different scales, designing projects from private gardens, through public spaces, parks and squares, to the scale of the city and the territory. Each project is based on the analysis of the places, their structures and their dynamics. We carry out a landscape reading to understand the landscape, heritage, environmental and socio-economic values of each site. This diagnosis with the highlighting of the values and potentials of the landscape is the driving element of the project. In LEMApaisajes we offer a top quality service always responding to the specific needs of each client.

BREATHE Restaurant Marbella The landscape performance tries to organize the exterior and interior spaces of the BREATHE Restaurant, located in Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain. The landscaping project is understood as a global intervention that works not only on vegetation, but on the whole of space, through architecture, light, water, fire, lighting, materials, etc. for creating its own unique atmosphere.

6

SPIRIT OF THE PROJECT The landscape proposal aims to bring visitors closer to the idea of nature understood as a return to the origins, to the essential. Likewise, a project is developed that seeks an “almost primitive” jungle environment in which the client is immersed, an environment of freshness where green and water from the sources predominate.

IKOS ANDALUSIA*****Estepona Ikos Andalucía has been planning since the beginning of the project as a benchmark of excellence in the luxury all-inclusive resorts in Spain. This is a comprehensive reform of the former Costa del Sol Princess hotel, adapting it to fit the standards of premium products and services of the hotel firm. Located on the shore of a beach of 14,000 square meters, the project carried out by the Gronda studio will have 411 rooms and suites that will be distributed in seven buildings. It will have eight restaurants, sports facilities, a theater, 3,100 meters of both outdoor and heated swimming pools and a spa.

10

The gardens of the complex are considered as a succesion of sequences that present the evolution of the Mediterranean landscape from the mountain landscape to the coastal landscape. Likewise, 6 different gardens are developed in the main areas, linked to each pool, which give each space its own environment. Within the “Ikos Green” sustainability project, it is proposed to regenerate and return the beach to its original state by means of dikes and breakwaters, thus regenerating an area of more than 14,000 m2 of sand.

The concept for the gardens of this project is based on the agricultural structure of olive trees and citric trees that we can find in islamic garden references such as the Agdal Garden or the Menara Garden. This cultural relation with the garden and the water, typical of the Moroccan tradition, is the source of the garden design concept. “Jnan”, Arabic word derived from Janna (Paradise), is a fruit trees garden, most frequent around the cities, and the countryside.

MÁLAGA

HOTEL LA FUENTE***** Málaga Hotel La Fuente is a Holistic Retreat Resort located in Southern Spain, Costa del Sol, at 600 m altitude, next to Montes de Malaga Natural Park, at the Northeast of the City of Málaga. The project seeks to achieve the identity of the original landscape of the Montes de Malaga area, through the recovery of traditional agriculture, as well as the use of native plants. Water, an element of life that is very present in Andalusian culture both in gardens and in agricultural fields, is the main axis of the project.

18

The cultural heritage, linked to the agricultural use of the mountains, as well as the natural heritage, through the series of autochthonous vegetation corresponding to the biogeographic sector in which the project is located, are the two sources of inspiration for landscaping. Likewise, the existing field of olive trees is reconfigured and the terraces of fruit trees and aromatic orchards linked to the old farmhouse are recreated. Moreover, there are areas for walks and recreation linked to the practice of yoga with a system of naturalistic plantations that emulates the surrounding nature itself.

COMMUNITY BY DESIGN Marbella To grant quality and breadth to space, both private and community, to enjoy the experience of Marbella with all the senses. This is the challenge. The proposal raises the integration of the community in its landscape in a respectful manner with the ground and with the Mediterranean culture. Through the search for a balance between landscape and architecture, a development with sustainability criteria that aspires to the consonance with the site is proposed. The implantation is resolved with a double line of houses that follows rigorously the layout of the contour lines. Taking advantage of the marked topography, we achieve that the second line is always set about 6 meters above the first. Therefore, 100% of housing has, on the ground floor, panoramic views. 24

This principle of organization places the housing to the lower levels of the project to release the promontories of any building and concentrate there the community life of the residential complex. Coinciding with the ridge, a green axis is defined, connecting as a large park, the 3 plots with their respective pools, terraces, playgrounds and meeting spaces.

The car stays in the basement to transform the street into a long walk with a garden character, which returns the pedestrian dimension to the whole complex and allows the enjoyment of community spaces. The community space is organized around a pedestrian and bike path that also serve for firefighters intervention. That vial which follows the contour lines is adapted to the topography by a parametric “small wall-bench” whose section changes depending on the terrain profile. This system helps improve the integration of the urbanization and enliven the community space to give a social living character, fundamental to promote neighborhood relationships.

EL CORDÓN DUNAR EN 1956

LAS CHAPAS Marbella The landscaping proposal aims to develop, with sustainability criteria, a garden that highlights the values of the place where it is integrated. Likewise, taking into account the visuals to be promoted and the nearby elements to be nuanced, the garden is organized around the housing blocks, wrapping the buildings and integrating them into the landscape. A garden is projected that is inspired by the dune ecosystem, both by the selection of plants and by the organization of spaces, changing as we move away from the sea. The use of native plants with few water needs favors water savings as well as adaptation to the largely sandy substrate of the land. Likewise, the use of invasive plants that may pose pro26

blems of colonization of the adjacent protected dune is avoided. The spaces are organized as a progression of very unique dune environments: WHITE DUNE The first strip of the project is called the white dune because of its proximity to the sea and the first line of the dune (commonly called the white dune). It has a selection of plants that seeks the integration of the project with the nearby dune, but providing an addition of colors to achieve attractiveness throughout the year.

LOS SISTEMAS DUNARES EN 2020

GRAY DUNE The second strip of the project is clearly inspired by the semifixed dunes located behind the coastal strip called gray dunes. The vegetation of said dune depression has a high ecological value that is intended to be reflected in the proposal, selecting the most attractive plants for their colors and textures. FIXED DUNE / PINAR In the last strip of the plot, the conservation of the existing stone pine specimens is proposed and it is intended to reinforce this own identity. Likewise, this part of the garden is inspired by the pine forests naturally present in the further back of the dunes called fixed dunes.

LAS DUNAS PARK Estepona It is a set of 70 exclusive apartments on the beachfront, whose uniqueness is the importance of the space of the central gardens. Indeed, at the time of its construction 25 years ago, the property wanted some relevant gardens both in size and quality. Over the years, trees and palm trees give the garden a mature appearance, but the treatment of shrubby and herbaceous spaces has become old. The landscaping project proposes the remodeling of existing gardens with sustainability criteria. For this, the reduction of the area of large water consuming grass is foreseen, as well as the use of native plants adapted to the coastal climate. Plant selection is done by searching the play of colors throughout each season of the year. 30

ÚNICO Benahavís The landscaping project tries to organize the free spaces of the plots of action of the project of the residential complex [UNICO] of 24 Houses in 4 blocks. The intervention zone is located in the Urbanization Los Aguilares, Benahavís, Spain. These are plots of approximately 10,880 m2 located between the + 106m and + 119m above sea level, in which a set of 4 blocks with 24 apartments is projected. The landscape area resulting from the management amounts to approximately 6,820 m2 [0.68 Ha].

32

SPIRIT OF THE PROJECT The landscape proposal aims to develop, with sustainability criteria, a garden that highlights the values of the place in which it is integrated. Likewise, taking into account the visuals to be encouraged and the elements that are close to nuancing, the garden is organized around the housing blocks, wrapping the buildings and integrating them into the landscape.

The garden projected is inspired by the culture of this area of the Costa del Sol, which has a strong relationship with Arab culture and agriculture. Likewise, the garden is conceived as a space that integrates elements deeply related to agriculture and heritage, such as stone walls, terracesof plantations, water pools, fruit trees or aromatic plants ... So they organize spaces with Mediterranean environments that greatly promotes water savings with the use of native plants and with few water needs.

Sarai is a new city located on the Cairo Suez road that aims to develop a new way of life. Sector S2 is organized, according to Sarai’s General Masterplan, with a green space in its heart.

SARAI S2 Landscaping Egypt

38

The assignment includes the development of three separate proposals for that vertebrador park, which connects the different neighborhoods of Sarai. The three proposals foresee a selection of autochthonous plants adapted to the climate of Egypt:

Rio seco

Noria

Ribera

The project offers a dry river image, capable of adapting to episodic floods thanks to a width released for rainwater, and a certain rusticity of different project elements. The project provides a modern interpretation of the Egyptian landscape on the banks of its river, with its cultivated terraces.

The obligatory reference that relates agriculture to Islamic culture and water is the ferris wheel. The Muslim agricultural culture is the modernizer of Roman systems of hydraulic exploitation that, renewed with oriental techniques, managed to devise systems of collection, channeling, storage (ditches, ferris wheels, pools). The lines marking this proposal are entirely straight lines, which dominates the artifice executed by the hand of man, with maximum functional logic and optimal use.

The vegetation is raised according to the general image that is extrapolated from the incredible oasis that exist in the deepest of the Egyptian desert in coexistence with the most fertile banks and nourished by the proximity of the water, the freshness of the green fields, the shadow of the groves, or the accompaniment of the color of flowers, make this a provocative proposal, suggestive and daring while demanding control and provisioning, always aware of the strategic value of the water element.

Sarai is a new city located on the Cairo Suez road that aims to develop a new way of life. The CAVANA Sector is organized, according to Sarai’s General Masterplan, with a vertebrate water space in its heart.

SARAI CAVANA Landscaping Egypt

42

The assignment includes the elaboration of three different proposals for said vertebrate space. The three proposals represent a process of densification of the green scenery and drying of water elements:

Laguna

Puentes

Oasis

The central parts of the intervention start from a reality that nature gives us in some parts of the world in which the desert mixes with the water creating fantastic images. That reality is the starting point for the first option of LAGUNA. In it, the patented Crystal Lagoon system has been chosen to create different bathing areas and water games in which the inhabitants of Cavana can enjoy absolute proximity to the water.

The bridges mark a special rhythm in the proposal and define the character of the sheets of water that delimit between them, bathing areas, playgrounds, jets, rivers, ornamental fountains and even ponds with fish are happening as different episodes in which life flows in different ways thanks to the water. Cobra vegetation major role in this proposal not only by its density, but by the succession of scenes that provide the coexistence of different species.

OASIS is the end point in the initiated process of densifying the green and drying the water in which we find the last wetlands. Water is present as large puddles that mark a strong presence in the graphic nature of the proposal and are offered to users as public pools that will delight its users.

THE RESIDENCES Estepona The plot is located in La Antigua, in Estepona. The project proposes to reorganize the urbanization areas of this residential complex, making, above all, a proposal for an interior garden, as well as the landscaping of the exterior areas of the housing blocks. It is a plot of approximately 7,000 m2 located between the + 50m and + 60m above sea level, in which a set of 4 blocks with 40 apartments is projected. Landscape and cultural integration is the main feature of the proposal. The garden is organized around two main axes formed by the position of the buildings. An axis between the access square and the viewpoint, and another axis on the pools of the whole. It is a succession of spaces that allow sequencing and livening up the routes inside the enclosure. The garden is 44

inspired by the culture of this area of the Costa del Sol that has a strong relationship with the Arab culture. Likewise, a garden with Mediterranean environments is projected, which greatly encourages the use of native plants. Reinterpreting the tradition of Muslim gardens with contemporary design criteria, “depressed gardens” located at a level slightly lower than the paths are organized. These gardens are planted with orange trees and low bushes, allowing you to enjoy more intensely the fragrance of the orange blossom and even pick the fruit from the elevated paths. Two main levels are fundamentally raised with a height difference of 55 cm, the pool area being lower.

Likewise, in addition to enjoying this configuration, private gardens can be gained despite their proximity to the main pool. The upper lateral route to the pool area and a promenade area located on the Access square-Mirador axis also benefit from this landscape system.

VIVIENDA BIOCLIMÁTICA Marbella While nowadays, the prestige labels are victims of forgery, and are produced in series to be consumed by the masses, craftsmanship appears as a clear response. Only the tailored and cared for design, elaborated with high quality materials, offers the consumer an exclusive and pleasant experience. These materials are offered to us by the exclusive surroundings of La Zagaleta, where we find valuable elements that distinguish and grant this site an own and unique identity. We are looking at a genuine place in its own, which doesn’t require of extravagant interventions to gain presence. Therefore, far from applying global recipes which could trivialize it, our strategy resides in exploiting the elements which distinguish it: The omnipresence of the stone, the breeze, the panoramic views which 52

open towards a positive orientation and the vegetation, which transcends its mere ornamental component, to provide comfort and captivate the senses. This is the material that supports our project. This is how it is found and this is how it is maintained. With it we present an architectural and landscape proposal, taking into account bioclimatic principals, and which is based on ecologic and sustainability concepts.

PARQUE URBANO Playahonda, Lanzarote The urban park proposes a composition that allows the union -or reunion- between the natural landscapes of the island of Lanzarote and the cultural landscapes that have been impregnated by the footprint of man. Each of these reference landscapes are part of the image - not only tourist but also artistic and social of the island - and give it its own identity. The Park is conceived as a perpetuation of Cesar Manrique’s attitude in that he intends to help the recognition and preservation of Lanzarote’s own values. This value must therefore be done with the vision and artistic freedom necessary to act on our space. The pictorial approach of the park is fundamental from the perceptible aerial view from the planes landing or taking off from the airport: the park is a living painting, a fossil geography capable of treasuring in its interior a large part of the island’s biocultural phenomena.

56

Likewise, aesthetic elements of the volcanoes are united in the same space as their shapes and colors, but also ecological elements corresponding to the flora that is largely endemic that occupy the artificial mounds that house some sports activities and protect against the influence of the airport and of the winds. On the other hand, in the area of contact with the city a park develops with a strong bond with agriculture and the peculiar culture present in Lanzarote. It is about the reinterpretation of landscape systems linked to island agriculture and the use of the island’s natural resources such as sanded crops, pajero or saline.

DÓLMENES DE ANTEQUERA Málaga The Antequera Dolmens Site has been a World Heritage since July 2016. The incorporation in the list of World Heritage entails a series of commitments with ICOMOS for the correct treatment of the Registered Site and to improve its relations, with the near and distant environment both urban and landscape level. The landscape restoration project is part of these measures planned to solve the landscape treatment of Site 1 as well as the circulation problems linked to the public visit. The proposal aims to resolve the landscaping of the Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Complex with the greatest respect for the existing site.

58

The landscape proposal develops specific actions on trees and vegetation, layout and design of pathways, street furniture, lighting, use of water resources, etc. for proper integration and appropriate treatment of the area. In close cooperation with the Regional Agency of Environment and Water of Andalusia, a careful selection of Andalusian wild flora native plants has been developed, adapted to the environment of the project and referring to the dolmens prehistoric times, as they correspond to the natural evolution of the landscape if there were no human activities on this territory.

In addition to the use of native species, the project incorporates some threatened or endangered flora. Indeed, we pretend to use the project as a platform for the conservation of endangered flora through its incorporation into a public park.

RED PAISAJÍSTICA Antequera Given the current context of the city of Antequera with the recent addition to the World Heritage List of the Site of the Dolmens, the Peña de los Enamorados and the Torcal, it is essential for the city to make determinations for the future. Taking into account the unprecedented impulse of being part of the World Heritage Site, a global reflection on the scale of urban and periurban space is essential for the progressive reconversion of the city model. The Antequera Landscape Network is presented as part of the response to these new challenges. Indeed, it is considered necessary to establish a green strategy for the protection and enhancement of the antequeran landscape. This roadmap tries to develop support not only for the tourist enjoyment of our 60

heritage, but also to improve the quality of life of citizens and fight against global change. The diagnosis of the Landscape Network makes it possible to identify heritage and landscape elements with potential tourist or recreational value, as well as existing landscape impacts, sensitive areas and potential risks. It is proposed as a complementary document to the Antequera PGOU that allows setting clear and precise objectives to affirm the landscape dimension of the city. Likewise, the system of free spaces of the PGOU is expanded and consolidated by defining the intervention criteria for each element of the Landscape Network, such as parks, itineraries, or ecological corridors linked to the rivers in contact with the city, or Creation of an agro-cultural park in Antequera.

Sports Halls and Courts Youssoufia Almost everyone knows the vocation of a Corporate Club but if its principle role is to offer a space for leisure and meeting for its members, could we not transcend this function, go further in thinking and break with the image of a private club reserved for an “elite”. Such was the debate within the agency. Designing the project as a showcase for the Moroccan architect was an interesting option, but seemed simplistic to us. Our attention then focused mainly on the concept of town planning and therefore of the relationship between the Club, the street and its environment.

62

Seen from the sky, the abundant vegetation seems to establish an unbreakable balance around the location of the sports complex. Our first challenge was to come and erect architectural structures while respecting this balance. Better still, we were inspired by it to soak up our spirit and to complete the writing. The lines became simple extensions of this flora to determine the volumes, create corridors of circulation and thus breathe life into a place of meeting, family relaxation and fitness.

Actuación de Adecuación de Espacios Libres:

AEL-03.
