Holiday house in Salento Origin of design This house is a holiday house situated in the village of Salve, near the edge of the Apulla region. It has been built in 2013 by the italian architect Massimo Iosa Ghini. He has conceived this home for his vacation on the coast with his family. The house is called masseria since the architect has tried to take references from this typical Southern housings to draw this project.

The house is situated in the village of Salve, in a neighborhood called Salento. This village is situated at 3 km from the sea coast. The region is considered as the edge of the Apulla region and the end of Italy. The name of the neighboorhood could be related to the italian word „salenti“ which means „to take off/ flight“ because of its topography along the coast The surroundings of the house were mainly farmlands during several decades. The region of Apulla is well-known for its olive trees farmlands and cereal crops thanks to the hot and mediterranean climate. The house is situated on one of those former farmland of olive trees, that the architect decided to keep. In the 9th Century, Apulla was regurlaly attacked and plundered by Saracen‘s pyrates coming by the seaside. To defend it, a wall of 5m high was built all around the houses of the city. Other fortifications, which are still standing, were built in the 15th Century to protect the city from the Ottoman raids. To resist against those assaults, the italian setllers have built Masseria.

Pic. 8 Diagram of masseria groupment

Masseria means fortified farms; it is a typical housing with courtyard that we can find in all southern Italy and on Sicilia island. The protection‘s system of those farms consist of a first wall about 1m20 encircling the famrlands and defining the different properties. The second part of the system is a higher wall around the building constituing the farm with the house of the owner and the different farm buildings of storage and workers housings. The owner house often has 1 or 2 levels to look after eventual assailants. The buildings are served by a big courtyard This typology of house has inspired the architect to reproduce it in this holiday house.

The parcel of the property is defined by those historic walls. On the lands, 3 buildings are now standing : an old „magazzino“ at the north, the main house in the middle, circled by a second wall; and an old „pajara“ at the south of the parcel. Contrary to the typical masseria, here the main house only has a ground floor. There is no up-level, apart from the access to the roof top. From outdoor, the house may look like a low but long rectangular- shaped stone in the middle of olive farmlands. The architect Ghini has kept the olive trees that were on the farmlands. He has integrated them to indoor with visual connections. All the buildings are strongly related/open to the outside. This indoor/outdoor relation was one of the key point for the construction of this holiday house. Indeed, the architect sees this house and context, the opportunity to enjoy the place as a retreat from daily life and a interface to connect back with nature. To reinforce the bound to the environment, the house is eco-sustainable. On the rooftop are situated solar panels collecting the best from the hot climate of Apulla‘s region. A great attention was also paid to the material and techniques used to build. To fit in with the context, the new house has been constructed folllowing techniques of the region and using stones extracted from the region“s ground : such as the Lecce stones(20km)used for the fireplace; the acquarica tuff from volcanic ground used for the façade cladding or the Chianca stone of the outside pavings.

The house is organised around the three different buildings accessible by paved ways and courtyards. At the North right after the entrance of the property, the magazzino which was already existing, has ( supposedly) kept its role of storage. In the middle of the parcel, the architect has turned the roof top of its new building into a sollarium to enjoy the sun and the view on farmlands and see. The main house is organised around the big courtyard as the typical masseria farms were. The living room and kitchen are totally facing west to enjoy the afternoon sun. The common rooms are widely open on the terrace hosting an outside living room under the wooden pergolas. The bottom of the window leading to the terrace has been reduced at the maximum to make the transition more fluid between inside and outside without having to even make a step up. In the other hand facing the South, the windows and doors are clearly taking reference of the masseria for their design. Thought at the time to protect the farm from invaders, the openings were closed by grids. The house is then composed of three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The guest house is situated in the „Pajara“ apart from the house. The Pajara is a small oneroom building that was already existing. It is one kind of the typical Matera‘s building : the Trulli. The name „Pajara“ could be coming from the word „Paglia“ that means straw. Indeed those small buildings were mainly used by farmers to store the straw but they were also housings during summer. Massimo Iosa Ghini has chosen to keep the history of this small temporary housing by placing the guest house inside. The truncated-shaped stone building is perfect to naturally regulate its inside temperature in winter and summer.
