_brief Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Presentation: 22/02/2014 Two people project
My architectural diploma thesis is an urban design project regarding the future residential extension of my hometown. This is considered a small to medium Greek town (approx. population 35.000). The Greek institutional context dictates the land uses and traffic network when needs of expansion lead to the conversion of farmland into urban space. Objective of the project is to examine the approved institutional design of town’s expansion and suggest an alternative proposal that goes beyond the traditional design practices. In fact, the research of an alternative urban design approach becomes a real-world requirement, as the national and international economical models shift. In order to do that theoretical tools and applied examples of urban development are employed. A comprehensive examination of the town’s architectural characteristics and a thorough site survey that highlights local qualities are the prologue of the design development.
The project follows a linear methodology: site survey, concept development, master planning. Finally, masterplan’s guidelines are developed to residential design.

Site survey at selected edges of the town highlights a significant local quality: most houses/individuals maintain small agricultural gardens which are exploited for selfconsumption or consumption at neighborhood’s level. Apart from other benefits, that activity becomes a point of social interaction, cooperation and animates the street life.
_recorded qualities
Traditionally, Greek towns are the development of older rural villages which grew in population on various industrial opportunities. That model includes a distinctive town center. Retail, leisure, cultural and administration services are accumulated around central, public spaces (squares, parks, etc). The institutional urban design doesn’t focus on decentralizing. As a result, the residents at town edges are gradually isolated from common services.

The concept is to create an urban space that embodies the established local qualities, combines land uses in order to provide a multi-dimensional every day environment and composes a vibrant neighborhood with constant street life. The development of the concept is approached on three axis: the organization of land uses, traffic network and the boundaries of private and public areas. Land Uses: The distribution of land uses aims for an inclusive plan where retail, administrative and cultural uses work as a decentralized town core, generating flow from the wider vicinity.

Traffic Network: The proposal suggests local streets to adopt the design of Netheralnd’s living woonerfs -very low speed roads where surface materials and equipment favor the free movement of pedestrians at all times. Private - Public boundaries: By suggesting the residential block as a shared gardening space we tempt to go a step beyond the traditional approach of private - public space. Without compromising the privacy of residences, we introduce a model where the space between the “house” and the “street” becomes an active, useful and productive space for interaction and activity. Moving away from the concepts of deserted neighborhood parkland or unexploited urban space.

The architectural design of designated public spaces is developed according to the three axis concept. Mixed land uses: administration, cultural, educational, leisure. The introduction of different surface materials aims to reflect the land uses diversion, to create paths between them and to stimulate the users at the same time. Also, the suggested and designed public equipment supports the above objectives.

Living residential blocks Residential areas are developed on the concept axis of revising the conventional connection between private space (house/interior) and public space (outside of the house/ street). It is also developed on the axis of combining a diversity of uses at residential block’s level. The private/public boundaries are re-introduced in a way that doesn’t compromise individual’s private life. In order to do that, the connection between the house (entrance) and the street (woonerf) changes. The entrance is positioned on a boardwalk that runs the back façades of the houses. Free passage in the block via the ring boardwalk is suggested, opening more walking routes in the town. By combining residence and free-time or regular work at the agricultural gardens a constant living flow crosses the blocks. Supplementary smaller buildings accommodate necessary equipment or work as warehouses.

The establishment of an architectural identity is approached through a simple idea: to convert the building’s main hallway to meeting area or productive workshop (i.e. for the processing of crops). Projected to the elevations, this area is architecturally differentiated.

In order to do that the building is divided to sub-volumes that accommodate the services respectively. The total heights are maintained low, except for the central volume which accommodates the main entrance and the reception. All sub-volumes are masked with an extra skin. The materials, white metal and wood, are creating a confident combination that compliments nature’s purity.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece 4th grade design studio Team project
This residential development is an exercise of employing theory and tools of contemporary urban design approaches in order to create a coherent and high quality living space. The site is in the wider vicinity of one of the denser municipalities of the city of Thessaloniki. Part of the project is to survey the existing, dense urban space and highlight dysfantionalities and out-dated design practices that lead to an inefficient urban environment which raises obstacles to the every day life. The new design should include a primary and secondary school, a regulated number of residences (approx. 700) with an average of 150 individuals / hectare. It should also favour and regenerate a green trail than runs parallel to the local river by making it part of the landscape.

To create a living space that favours the green spaces within the urban network, the walking distances and the quality in private life a ‘garden city’ progressive model is introduced. We develop the residential blocks around green areas. Free access points from the street make them integral parts of the urban space. For the local streets the model of ‘woonerf’ is employed, with spacious paved areas, resting equipment and designated parking places. The general planning was developed in order to position common services (retail, cultural) to walking distances from everywhere and to create a paved axis that connects all services and green areas.

The site is a wide coastal area. Site survey records a significant level of underdevelopment and abandonment of the existing sport facilities. Main objective of the project is to regenerate the area by taking into consideration its privileged natural landscape which combines long views to the sea and the mountains. The regeneration should include sea transportation facilities which will serve as a connection between the city bus and train links with the wider coastal area. Also, it should include a marina for small and medium vessels, administration building, restaurant, outdoors sport and leisure facilities. All the above will turn the regenerated area into a portal for visitors from the city of Thessaloniki and beyond.

Sea holds a primary role in Thessaloniki’s architectural identity as it offers a wide south-west open horizon and a long coastline. The concept maintains and highlights that primary role by putting the sea at the center of a smooth lined design which introduces routes parallel with the coastline or routes that are leading to the sea. Buildings’ heights are maintained low and main views are sea orientated.

The owner was looking for an open plan design which unites the living room with the kitchen. Particular requirements were: a spacious bedroom, privacy to bedroom/bathroom access. Also, a potential future bedroom which will be positioned at the back of the house was taken into consideration as well.
_concept Answering the brief’s requirements, the proposal puts the lounge - kitchen areas at the front of the house, taking advantage of the large window. Living room is arranged in two sub-areas: a sitting area in front of the window and a TV area. The bedroom bathroom - future bedroom are accessed by a short corridor and are grouped at the back of the house.

Urban Room - Relax
Organized by DOMES design portal Personal participation
The competition requested an alternative approach of the conventional hotel room in an urban medium budget hotel (4 stars). The design had to take into consideration all the standard requirements for hotel facilities as dictated by the regulations. The designers were called to re-invent the concept of the ‘hotel room’ and create an engaging atmosphere that offers not only accommodation but a unique experience of hospitality to the modern traveller.
The idea was to design a room that invites the guest to experience an absolute relaxation during his stay. The layout, the materials and the equipment contribute to that concept. The bed and a spacious walk-in shower are the dominant features of the room. All the other 3D elements (wardrobe, table, shelves etc) are minimized to their functional, practical parts. Materials and colours are inspired by the urban aesthetics but combined they contribute the concept of relaxation. Natural beton, perforated metallic partitions, white surfaces and green tints introduce the ambience of resting.
