BALUNGAN (2010) for gamelan slendro dedicated to Ensemble Gendhing Netherland
INSTRUCTION This piece is based on repetition of motif which is called "balungan" in gamelan playing. It is dedicated for Ensemble Gending for International Gaudeamus Festival 2010 which specified for gamelan slendro Kyai antara Bawana lan Bawana. In this piece each player plays indenpendently with stable tempo (q=100) except indicated accel, rall, and other tempo marking. Duration marking should be followed but there is flexibility in the peformance, so it may be slightly changed, but the proportion should be kept. There is some technical expalanation like mute and normale that indicates contrasting sound between these two techniques. Play at the edge in bonang should produce a metallic sound that is expected in this piece. Gender is to be played quite percussive than traditional way of gender playing in this piece to create some metallic sound especially in "tutti" passage.
Play the pattern repeatedly until next figure or end of the line
Play the rhythm pattern with free pitches within the range from top to below note on the left side If indicated tempo ad lib. then the pattern can be played with alternating tempo up to the performer The pitches must be alternated. If there are repetition notes played, it is supposed to be not static and moving forward. There can be little accellerando and rallentando. Notes in the box means short interuption figure within repeated figure which is represented with the line. When there is repetition sign in the box, then the interuption is played in consecutive, alternating between the main figure
Play free pitches with the rhythm given, the pitches must be alternated. If there are repetition notes played, it is supposed to be not static and moving forward.
Slur in the end of note means let the note vibrates
Dotted lines (sometimes with arrow point) means that figure should be played in the same entrance When there is no dotted line between figure than the entrance can be free according to conductor
