EDITOR’S COMMENT

A

s we approach Spring and the beginning of the competition season, in this issue we take a look at what was achieved in 2015, and celebrate the success of those who achieved their goals. The Annual Meeting and Awards dinner was a resounding success, with a real party atmosphere for the presentation evening; all credit must go to Larissa Whiley, Helen Boston and their team for putting on an evening with a difference! A great occasion to dress up, celebrate, collect awards and dance the night away! Congratulations to our new Supreme Champion, Julie Martin and her horse Vic, a great achievement, and an inspiring demonstration of teamwork, as this success was supported by Julie’s daughter Emma and several friends. The AGM itself was also well

supported by attending members, with the new reduced in number Board, being given plenty of food for thought and work to do for the future. Let us hope that with new people on the team, and a fresh insight, EGB will strengthen it’s presence in the equestrian world and encourage many more riders to try endurance. For the coming season, there are several new events on the calendar, and we have previews of some of the early rides, as well as some new competitive challenges for those who like to have a goal to aim at over several rides. Want a different type of challenge? Why not look at travelling a route on horseback over several days? Read about riding the Pennine Way, and see if it whets your appetite for more…there are so many long distance routes to choose from…and what a great way to spend a few days with

your friends and your horse! Or there is the challenge of the multiday ride…how many miles can you achieve with your horse? Alternatively, what about stretching yourself and looking at what you can add to your repertoire? Thought about coaching? Get in touch with Julie Martin and see when the next taster days are, or when the next course will be running. It’s a great way of passing on your knowledge and experience to others, and a great way of learning for yourself too. As we start the season off, and the training begins in earnest, I hope to see many of you out on the trail…and look forward to reading your reports, seeing your photos and hearing all about what you are getting up to with your horses. Keep in touch!.

VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR

VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR Happy New Year to you all! Once again the Annual General Meeting last November was well attended with the usual lively debates. On behalf of everyone who came, I thank Larissa Whiley, Helen Boston and their families for the successful Cabaret Ball and Awards Dinner which followed. Well done also to the large number of trophy and award winners who achieved so much during the 2015 season. Congratulations must also go to those who did not receive national trophies but nevertheless achieved their own goals at a Group or at a personal level. Following the AGM, I welcome two newly elected Directors, namely Andrew Chisholm and John Robertson. Andrew has taken up the role of Vice Chairman and Finance Director, whilst John Robertson is now the International Director. As you will recall, a new governance structure has been implemented following the AGM. The ten members of the new Board have taken up their roles and have now appointed their Committees. This has taken a great deal of time and effort between the AGM and the beginning of the new season. There is still much work to do over the coming months. Increased participation in equestrian sport as a whole is a major focus for the British Equestrian Federation (BEF). Clearly it is important for Endurance GB to play its part. We will be represented on the working party which has been formed by the BEF to promote cross-discipline cooperation in this area. As a result we will look to work together with our counterparts in other organisations, such as the British Riding Clubs, The Pony Club and Retraining of Racehorses and the equestrian world as a whole, to increase awareness of endurance in Great Britain. Animal welfare remains of paramount importance to Endurance GB. We have introduced new rest period regulations within the 2016 Members’ Handbook in order that our equine companions should be given time to recuperate well between rides. So here we stand at the beginning of a new season already. The local Groups will be working hard on our behalf to get the season off to a flying start with social and training rides, helping us to dust off the cobwebs of the winter break. I convey my thanks to all the Group Committees who work so hard at the start of a new season. Thanks also go to our Ride Organisers will also be pulling together their plans for their events in the new season – how quickly it all comes round again! It only remains for me to wish you a successful and safe endurance year; I hope to see you on the circuit.

ENDURANCE NEWS FROM RACING TO ENDURANCE

LYNN HARVEY ROR WINNER

14-year-old Beths Choice owned and ridden by Lynn Harvey from Dorset was named as RoR Elite Endurance Champion 2015. Trained by Milton Bradley Beths Choice ran a total of 15 races on the flat and over jumps winning one race in his career before retiring. Lynn, who has worked in racing yards for most of her life and now works for Harry Fry, is ‘hooked’ on endurance, said; “Over the past 5 years Harry has surpassed anything I could have dreamt of and he shows just what former racehorses are capable of. He has completed four 80km and five 60 plus km rides, winning two of the 80km rides. We have often been out over varied terrain, ground conditions and in appalling weather but this makes it all so worthwhile.” Lynn was presented with her £2500 prize at the RoR Awards Ceremony held in Newmarket on Monday 16th November. The RoR Awards night, which was hosted by guest presenter and RoR Patron Clare Balding, recognises the achievements of former racehorses adapting and excelling in their new careers. RoR is British horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. It raises funds from within racing to provide facilities for the care, retraining and re-homing of former racehorses, and to promote awareness of the suitability of the retrained racehorse for other equine careers. To qualify for the RoR Endurance competition, horses must have raced in Great Britain and be registered with RoR and Endurance GB. The horse must be ridden by an EGB member. All Graded Endurance Rides and Competitive Endurance Rides are eligible to count towards the Trophy. Standard Endurance GB trophy points are used on an accumulative basis for the RoR Trophy. The Trophy is for the horse, not the rider. However, only the best TEN scores count towards the total for the Trophy in any year. Anna Collins, who rides with the Cheshire Group has been competing with her ex-racehorse Diamond Destiny since 2010 explains the pros and cons of ex-racehorses in endurance, “the thoroughbred typically has bags of stamina, a very low heart rate when fit, is used to travelling long distances to an event and is brought up from an early age to understand the routines of every day handling, shoeing, clipping and has good stable manners. The challenge in retraining an exracehorse for any discipline, especially endurance include teaching them to ride in a rhythm or cadence that works them efficiently and simple schooling manoeuvres that will get you safely through a gate, being tied to a trailer rather than attended to in a wagon or standing still whilst you get on but that’s the rewarding part, when it comes together. When introduced to endurance, they can be a little uncertain of their surroundings as they will probably not have seen muddy puddles, low hanging branches or uneven terrain but they soon get the hang of it and seem grateful that they have a new job and the freedom to enjoy themselves. They are used to training in a string so riding in company is great but ask them to stretch out and go alone and it’s like flying! Thoroughbreds can suffer from poor foot conformation but nothing that is too difficult to manage with a good diet and farrier who understands the job that the horse is expected to do. They also tend to be a little taller than the average endurance horse so being able to re-mount on course is vital. Ex-racehorses are so giving, especially when they finally have a person to call their own and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of bringing a new horse into the sport to consider an ex-racehorse. Anna has enjoyed successes with Diamond Destiny including 7th place in the Novice Championships and being part of the North West winning team in the Interregional Championships 2010. Being Placed 3rd in the RoR Championships and winning ‘best shod’ in the 2014 InterRegional Championships. She has just taken on a second ex-racehorse who she hopes will be ready to compete in his novice season in 2016. For more information visit www.ror.org.uk

BRITISH ENDURANCE SPONSORSHIP RENEWED HORSE HEALTH SURVEY The Animal Health Trust, in collaboration with Endurance GB, is conducting a new research study to investigate veterinary problems of British endurance horses. The study will document common illnesses, training and management practices and will assess whether horse, rider or managementrelated risk factors are associated with specific health problems. You are eligible to participate if you are registered with Endurance GB and are the main rider of one or more endurance horses currently registered with Endurance GB. All information will be handled with strict confidentiality and no

personal information on either horses or riders will be published. A summary of the main findings will be published on the Endurance GB website and in the Endurance GB magazine and therefore will be available to all Endurance GB members. The survey will be open until the 29th February 2016. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this study and if you have any questions, please contact Annamaria Nagy by email on: annamaria.nagy@aht. org.uk.

Linda Cowperthwaite had some lovely news over the festive period when TopSpec Feeds confirmed that they are to continue to support her in 2016, Linda said “TopSpec have stuck by me through lows and high of horses and I feel honoured that they have offered their

continued support. I hope to have a busy 2016 with 6 horses all at different levels to compete on the circuit in the coming season.” TopSpec Feeds are also the main sponsors of the Lindum Spirit.

Pictured are the only Arabian horses to participate in the ‘All the Queens Horses’ New Year’s Day parade in London, stallion Mukhtar Ibn Eternity owned by Sasha Melia and advanced endurance mare, Samawi Bint Shalkar, owned by Pam Gates. 64 horses and ponies in total participated to celebrate the 30th year of the parade which goes through central London and has a new theme each year. The theme this year was ‘Magical’, with both Arabians parading in the ‘Unicorn Group’. Testament to the versatility of endurance horses and the Arabian breed. Endurance January/February 2015 7

RIDE PREVIEWS

RIDE PREVIEWS Go Ride in South and West Wales South & West Wales Group’s Pen Ddol Y Gadr ride has always attracted a loyal band of riders but in recent years the numbers have been creeping steadily upwards. More and more people are making the journey to West Wales each May to enjoy the wonderful cantering on the heather-clad Mynydd Llanllwni, where skylarks provide the background music and red kites twist and turn overhead. This is the last lump of respectable height in the great curve of the Cambrian Mountains before they drop off into the lowlands of the west and eventually fall into the sea. The views are magnificent in all directions with the Black Mountain usually living up to its name in the east and the pointed peaks of the Preseli Hills prominent to the west. So how do you make a good ride even better? Well, in 2016, we’ve not only doubled the fun to two whole days but also found a great new home. The former venue was an old quarry, and that was it, nothing there except a great big void where rock used to be. To arrive there on your own felt like you’d been teleported down to a new planet, with nothing to do but wait for the aliens to appear. Fortunately, it was always fellow volunteers who turned up instead, and they were generally much less scary. Our new venue is at Bryn-Llywelyn farm, right on the edge of the open mountain and having all the vital facilities needed to hold a two-day ride. Water and sanitation – two of life’s most essential services – are present on site. Both stabling and corralling is available for the horses whilst camping is on offer for their human slaves. As if that’s not enough, our host will be providing catering and there are even plans for a barbecue on Saturday evening for those staying over. All the ride details are on the EGB website and in the handbook. As well as the usual one-day rides of all distances from 16km to 80km, new for this year will be a choice of four two-day rides: 66km, 80km, 105km and 130km. 8

CATH AND PENNY RAWNSLEY ENJOYING THE GOING IN WALES.

For those without help, this ride is very easy to self-crew: there are numerous stream crossings and the route setters usually remember to leave a jug or two for easy sloshing. So, if you haven’t been to this ride before, why not head west and make this one of your new experiences for 2016? When the going gets good, the good get going.

Coming up in Scotland In these gloomy winter months it is always a boost to the spirits to look forward to what’s coming up on the SERC calendar. Our two biggest rides are, first, Seacliff on 17-19 June and, second, the Championships on 22-24 July. Seacliff has proved popular with riders from both sides of the Border, especially as it offers FEI one and two star classes over flat, fast and varied coastal terrain featuring two spectacular beaches. A new, extended, venue in 2015 gave much more space for parking, camping and corralling and proved capable of coping with unseasonal torrential downpours. For the novice (or even experienced) endurance rider the trap to avoid is that of going too

fast - the terrain is tempting but the going can be softer than it looks, and many a horse has been a little bit too enthusiastic and come home lame or with a high heart rate. This is a ride that deserves respect. A different kind of challenge is offered by the Championships, this year being hosted by Highland Branch up at Brodie Castle, on the south shore of the Moray Firth. It looks like a long way on the map but the roads are good (approximately three and a half hours from Edinburgh), the scenery is dramatic and the welcome will be very warm! Much of the terrain is mixed forestry, often grass tracks. Brodie Castle itself is well worth a visit. An even more accessible event for those south of the Border is the popular Broughton ride (1-3 July) which takes riders into the remote and rolling hills of the Southern Uplands, territory of the Border Reivers of bygone times. While the longest distance on offer here is the 2-day 80k, the challenge lies in the terrain – and very often in the weather! Last year, while the weekend was dry, helpers were cocooned in winter jackets; previous years have seen endless downpours and temperatures in the high 20s. Further information on these and all other SERC rides can be found via the Club website, www.scottishendurance.com. Official members publication for Endurance GB

RIDE PREVIEWS

Concrete Cows Ride 20th March 2016 kindly sponsored by Equidgel

N

ew on the national calendar for 2016; the Concrete Cows ride has in fact been running for many years as a Cromwell Group Training ride with kind permission of Milton Keynes Parks Trust. This ride is unusually urban in its venue, which is about 300 yards from the Centre MK shopping centre – so close in fact, that one year when the portaloos failed, competitors were able to use the toilets in John Lewis! As such, whilst it may not have the rolling hills and fabulous forests of more rural rides, it still has the capacity to present competitors with some unique challenges; offering water splashes, underpasses, canal boats and even a theme park. Not forgetting the famous concrete cows themselves which most horses seems to object to

ranks and is aimed at those golden oldies who maybe cannot go as far or as fast as they once did, but still enjoy an outing. This class has been set officially as a novice GER in order to enable the maximum number of people to participate but entries are also encouraged from veteran open and advanced horses. We also have a Team Challenge running across all the classes at the ride and we have kept it as flexible as possible so that the maximum number of people can participate. Teams are of 3-6 riders with the best 3 scores to count. The Challenge is set at two levels: Open Team Challenge – for teams of

never fails to surprise first time riders here, so come along and support this new event. Who knows, you might also learn to love the city of the Concrete Cows!

“I had a blast on this ride and so did my horse and the people I went with” rather more than the real ones (which we also have). The route runs alongside the canal, through parkland, round lakes and fields; largely along purpose built, surfaced horse trails and bridle ways with a very small amount of road work on quiet estate roads. This ride offers a fabulous training environment for the green horse/rider and because of the very limited road work is ideal for the barefoot competitor. This year the Concrete Cows ride is offering classes for all levels, from a 14km PR to an 80km GER. There are specific classes for Pony Club members, Riding Club Team entries are welcomed and the event also has a couple of special challenges on offer: Class 5 is a Veteran challenge class for horses and ponies aged 20 years or over. It was inspired by the photos EGB has been posting about all the wonderful older horses we have in our

3-6 riders competing inanyclass. Total team distance to be between 200km and 300km. Novice Team Challenge– for teams of 3-6 riders competing in novice GER classes and pleasure ride classes up to 41km. Open to all levels of horse/ rider as long as they are competing in the correct class. Total team distance to be between 100km and 200km. Quotes from past competitors. “Brilliant ride can’t wait for the next one thank you” “I had a blast on this ride and so did my horse and the people I went with” “You were all fab, thank you, it was the perfect day and I thought it went brilliantly. I didn’t even get lost once which was a first for me!!!!! Bravo” “Thank you so much to all for a fab ride our first 40k experience and thoroughly enjoyed” The quality of riding available right in the heart of the city of Milton Keynes

LONGEVITY IN ENDURANCE

Competing at 32 (and a half) After reading the Nov/Dec 15 issue of Endurance, Fiona Thompson got in touch to tell us about her amazing horse:

M

y horse Comfy is the oldest endurance horse in S.E.R.C. I am reliably informed. It would be nice to know if she is the oldest in the UK. She is a 14.1hh Standardbred who is 32 (well 32 and a half now, it all counts at this age) and the oldest endurance horse in Scotland (S.E.R.C.). I have had this mare (Southern Comfort aka Comfy) since she was 2 and we have grown up together. We have done everything from showing, xc, show jumping, driving, PC, breeding etc. She taught my daughter ride and she went on to do P.C. and show jumping on her about 4 years ago. Comfy has now completed her 3rd season of endurance. I got into endurance as my daughter, who had always been my hacking buddy, gave up riding all together. I take Comfy and my other x-racing trotting Standardbred Bailey. Comfy even took my husband, Alan, on his first ever endurance in 2015. He is not a rider but I have been trying to coax him to ride for years. He decided to give it a go and after only riding her 3, possibly 4, times he completed his first endurance ride at Forest of Deer, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire. We took it steady, which Comfy was not happy about.

10

She didn’t want to walk and jogged merrily along the 8km, until Alan had the confidence to canter, which he had never done before. It was a great feeling for us to be out on the course together. This was going to be the start of his season. Bailey then sustained and injury and was out of action, so Comfy stepped in to be my main steed again. She completed a 24km endurance ride on Sunday 26/7/15 in a very respectable time and went on to win the 24km Best Presentation award. Her last two rides of the season were Philorth and Balmoral. Philorth she completed the 20km pleasure in just under 11kmph with Hr39. The last one Balmoral she completed at a similar speed and won the Best presentation award again. This entail’s the following:You are awarded points for the horses behaviour and your horses trot up for the vet, before and after the ride. Then the speed you finished your ride in and the best heart rates. As far as she is showing she has no plans to show her age and slow down. Fingers crossed for her making an appearance for the 2016 season aged 33. This is a massive achievement for such an old horse. She is one in a million and absolutely amazing!!!!

LONGEVITY IN ENDURANCE

THE ENDURANCE GB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING A BRIEF OUTLINE

The Annual Meeting of EGB took place at the Hinckley Island Hotel on 28th November 2016.

I

n the Chair, John Hudson welcomed a good number of members to the meeting, which heralded the inauguration of a new Board of Directors, reduced in numbers to aid efficiency. John told the audience that the result of the election to the Board would be announced at the end of the formal meeting. Following approval of the previous meeting Minutes, and apologies from those unable to attend, the meeting received the Report from the Chair. Membership had remained stable throughout the previous year, and for the first time for several years, had started to rise; a good sign. In the past season there had been 8000 ride entries, with a low accident rates and a high pass rate for horses

competing in graded and competitive events. During the year feedback forms had been issued to both riders and volunteers and the information from those forms was being analysed and assessed. (see Management pages in this issue of the magazine for some of the information extracted from these responses. Ed) 2015 saw the “last Golden Horseshoe event being run by Barbara Wigley and her team, a sad occasion to lose such an iconic event. However, there are possibilities for future organisers, and the event may not be lost in the long term, although it will not run in 2016. In 2015 the Board instigated the practice of sending out a Newsletter to members after each Board meeting. This is to keep members informed of current events and decisions, and to improve

communication across the membership from the top down. John also mentioned that the age for a member to vote on matters within EGB has now been set at 14 years. Mentioning the Meydan Sponsorship that was debated at the 2015 meeting, John said that it had looked like a big opportunity and that EGB had been close to a contractural agreement, however, the deplorable welfare issues that came to light as the season progressed meant that this was something that could not be continued, and the Board are looking to the FEI to enforce the regulations and ethics of endurance within those countries implicated. Following the EGM of EGB held in September 2015, the number of members of the Board will be reduced

AGM

to 10 (from 15) with a specific role for each Director. Committees will have a greater involvement in decisions and decision making. The Plan on a Page (discussed at the 2015 meeting) indicated that a new Board structure would be efficacious, and John thanked the membership for their support in bringing this about. Of the Board that had been in place over the past year (or several) the following members were retiring: Jo Claridge: Served on the Board for 10 years, a former Chair of EGB and latterly Vice Chair. Peter Claridge: Serving as Finance Directed and Vice Chair. Jenni Gilbert: Served on the Board for 6 years as Chair of Rides and Rules and also as Company Secretary. Kevin Hawes: Has worked on due Diligence and been instrumental in the restructure. David Hirst: who has been on the Board for a year, and has worked hard with training within EGB. All these people have worked hard for EGB and their efforts have been much appreciated. Peter Claridge, as outgoing Chair of Finance then gave a short report. Details of the accounts for the year had already been circulated to members. Peter stated that EGB having made a loss for the year 2013, instigated strict budgets for 2014, and worked hard to stay within these. Spending was down for the year by 9% and the organization had recorded a surplus for the year. An excellent turn around, but not one that we could be complacent about, and more work is needed to both maintain and improve this. The accounts for the year were accepted, and Peter says that the Board are focusing on maintaining a small surplus for the coming year. There will be no increase to any fees or charges for 2016, nor any increase to ride fees. The Board will take a careful overview through 2016 and then set fees for 2017 accordingly. Reports were presented from the International Committee by John Hudson. The information from the reports is available on the EGB website, as are the reports from the Rides and Rules committee and the Health & Safety committee, as well a Groups report from Jo Claridge. RIDES AND RULES STATED: • 2162 different horses rode with EGB in the past year

• •

The average pass rate was 89% The successful distance ridden over the year was 237,66kms the equivalent of nearly 6 times around the Earth..

For 2016 there are 74 national rides panned and 9 FEI days, with 6 new rides in the programme. The National Champs will be at Keysoe, theInter Regionals at Lindum, the Southern Champs will be at Boconnoc the Northern Champs at Hexham and the Home International will be in Ireland at St. Patrick’s Coast. Harry Ingram gave a brief overview of what PR and marketing has been in place over the year, and what is planned for the coming season. Currently the Board is looking to increase the presence of EGB on social media and within the traditional horse press, as well as promoting a positive image of endurance within the UK. The current project looks at longevity in endurance horses and this will be structured across several platforms. Proposals from both the Board and from Members were debated with much discussion from the floor. Two of the proposals from the Board were carried, the first relating to lapsed equine qualifications, and the second to lowest allowable speed in a Pleasure Ride. The members proposals that were forward were not carried, and in one case, was withdrawn by the proposer. Voting results for the Board of Directors was announced at the end of the meeting, and the results were: Successfully voted onto the Board John Hudson Sue Box Harry Ingram Andrew Chisholm Anne Dark Jane Tennant Kerry Dawson Brian Floyd-Davies John Robertson

Unsuccessful were: Sue Broughton, Fiona Videla and Marianne Ironside.

The date set for the next Annual General Meeting is Saturday 19th November 2016 REST PERIODS - UPDATE Following on from the Endurance GB Annual General Meeting in November,

the Board undertook to look into rest periods with the aim of implementing them prior to the start of the 2016 season. This involved discussions with the FEI to determine whether their rest periods applied to national horses as well as those registered for FEI competition. The FEI confirmed that their rule was only applicable to those horses registered to compete with the FEI. Endurance GB has therefore implemented the original proposal, which was presented to members during the 2015 AGM. This has been implemented by the Board on welfare grounds and therefore is effective immediately. The full rules are available at :http:// endurancegb.co.uk/main/restperiods The compulsory rest periods will be monitored by the Technical Stewards (TS) at each ride. Following each ride, the TS will mark on your master card when the horse is next able to compete. On arrival at the next competition the TS will confirm you are not in breach of the rest period criteria. For Graded Endurance Rides, EGB has recommended rest periods, which follow a similar structure to those applied to CERs. We hope that those taking part in GERs will adopt a common sense approach to rest periods following rides. Any concerns about your horses’ fitness or ability to compete should always be discussed with your vet, especially when returning to work or competition. For both CERs and GERs, if the horse is eliminated for lameness or metabolics, an additional rest period will be applicable. If you require more information, please email ridesandrules@endurancegb.co.uk

RIDE REPORTS

A RIDE DOWN THE

PENNINE BRIDLEWAY

O

n Monday 7th September 2015, we began our 163 mile journey from Cumbria down the Pennine Bridleway home to Rushop Hall in Derbyshire. Team members Jan, Helen and Sue rode the 12 day journey on their wonderful horses Jan on Finn, a 16.3h, 13 year old Irish/ TB gelding; Helen on Mac, a 17 year old 16.2h, bay TB gelding (borrowed from his extremely generous owner Emma) and Sue on Milly, a 15.2h, 7 year old, bay Arab mare. We had mainly great weather and a totally unforgettable adventure. Jan hatched the plot after a holiday a couple of years ago at Stone Trails in Cumbria, right at the very start of the Pennine Bridleway. Not much hesitation for Helen and Sue to agree to the adventure and we started thinking about things a year before (basically getting excited at the prospect) and the serious planning started in April/May. We had

some essential criteria – it had to be a holiday, not a route march, the horses had to be well catered for with grazing each night and 12 days was the maximum we could be away. Alison at Stone Trials helped us find the first 3 nights’ accommodation (the horses staying with her the night before we started) and between us we then found accommodation at suitable intervals along the way. We rode between 9 and 19 miles each day, averaging 13-14. Sometimes we were at a B&B or pub with horses in a farmer’s field locally and sometimes (less often) at places which were specially geared up for horses and

riders. It took quite a bit of ringing around and following up leads but that was half the fun for Jan and Sue, the pathological planners of the team. We carried all our gear with us, although friends replenished the horse feed and supplied clean numnas and knickers once on the trip. Even with careful planning the journey was not without incident. Most were amusing, some a little worrying but none insurmountable. First day, first problem, we arrived at Stone Trails ready for the off, to find that Finn had slipped a shoe in the field overnight. This was despite careful shoeing planning over the summer so that all 3 horses were shod in the week before we left. Miraculously, the farrier was already on the yard and able to sort us out and off we set with Alison leading the way to the start of our adventure.

RIDE REPORTS

Alison left us up on the moor with a cheery “the first part’s a bit steep just hug the side of the hill and watch the drop”. She wasn’t kidding!! Having negotiated this early initiation we eventually stopped for lunch in beautiful sunshine, amongst spectacular scenery and untacked the horses to let them graze. Helen assured us that as long as you hold one the other two can roam free and will not stray, which proved to be the case…..on this occasion! And so the pattern of our trip developed as we rode from place to place each day, meeting new people and eating at different places gave a particular and

suddenly coming across civilisation in the form of the M62 or mills and factories visible in the distant towns, reminded us of how people and nature had shaped the landscape over the centuries. Along the way we found ourselves staying in some amazing places (not always luxurious but never dull). We learned quickly to assess the likely breakfast quality and ordered accordingly – a task that often had to be completed before bed. Our horses always had good fields with plenty of grass but were not always in the same location as us. We were a little daunted at leaving them to start with but it rapidly became apparent

Coming back into Derbyshire brought us to our much loved familiar landscape. The Pennine Bridleway had allowed us to make this amazing journey and we are very grateful for the vision and work that brought it into being. It falls down a bit in Glossop when some serious traffic has to be negotiated plus the roughest going and trail bikes between Hayfield and Rushop, but the views of Kinder Scout made up for all of that. Each of us felt uplifted by our holiday – the good company with our horses and each other, the landscape and people and places we met and experienced still make us smile each day. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS FOR YOU IF YOU WANT TO DO THIS RIDE:

Read our blog at: www.spareknickersanyone.blogspot.co.uk Sue Mayer, Jan Allcock and Helen Wallis special rhythm to the holiday. The horses were incredibly well matched for pace and we never arrived anywhere later than 4.30 and usually by 3 or earlier, giving the horses and us time to relax and enjoy. All of them were happy in front, the middle or the back and took everything in their stride and we had no major mishaps. We did have a few bits of broken tack (easily mended) and there was one very steep, rocky and narrow ‘off piste’ moment which challenged us all to keep calm. However, other than that all went well and we didn’t ever go more than a few 100 yards off course – thanks entirely to Sue’s brilliant map reading. What was really special was the beautiful and varied scenery and the closeness with our horses. Starting off with the picturesque Mallerstang Valley, we then spent 3 days accompanied by views of Whernside, Pen-y-Gent and Ingleborough as we rode through the limestone landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Rarely seeing anyone else, it was exhilarating to be on the edge of Dent Dale, a bit spooky when the mist descended, then wonderful when the next vista opened up. When we left the Yorkshire Dales, we entered Lancashire and a whole different experience - gritstone moor land with the heather in full bloom, Pendle Hill often in the background and with the historic industrial valleys below us. Often going from remote reservoir to reservoir, then Endurance January/February 2016

that after a long day’s ride they had no intention of leaving one another and their only real priority was eating. We met some wonderful characters at our various stops along the way and all were, without exception, welcoming and helpful but a few special mentions should be made. The first should go to ‘Winston’ who, in fact, we never met but who kindly gave us use of, and directions to, his field on the bridleway near Horton in Ribblesdale. Andrea in Long Preston will not be forgotten for her sterling efforts to find us a field when the one organised by her husband and the pub landlord over a pint failed to come to fruition. The Wycoller contingent were amazing, starting with Parsons Lee Farm where we were provided with free grazing as “the grass needed eating anyway” and continuing with Ursula who picked us up from a local Café, provided B&B in her lovely home and returned us to our horses in the morning, what a star. Shep and Jan at Knowl Farm, Littleborough, who let us use their newly finished holiday cottage and filled it with food and wine; and the final special mention goes to Sir Simon and Cosima Townley whose welcome and hospitality at their fabulous home, Dyneley, was second to none. Mary Towneley, Cosima’s mother and Simon’s late wife, was a driving force behind both the Mary Towneley loop and the Pennine Bridleway so it was a special privilege to visit her home.

Learn how to do gates or take Helen and Mac who are superhuman when it comes to gate opening. Someone on a smaller horse is also handy for the impossible ones! Thoroughbreds can do trail riding as well as native ponies so don’t worry what shape your horse is. Take some cable ties – perfect for mending broken reins, adapting head collars as bridles etc etc. Enjoy the pre-ride training and getting fit – it’s worth it for both yourself and your kit. It is also worth mentioning that this is not the time to try out new equipment. Stick with what you regularly use. You can even get caught out by that new pair of special padded knickers, bought for the long days, which aren’t as comfy as advertised and impossible to change en route. Make sure you pack your sense of humour - it’s essential. Especially when you encounter some of the more quirky B&B offerings. One pair of jodhpurs can last 12 days and you need fewer knickers than you might think.

SCOTTISH ENDURANCE RIDING CLUB

‘… and thanks to Petplan Equine’

I

t’s been an exciting and rewarding year in the Lorna Hogg household for a variety of reasons but also as she was able to secure valuable support from Petplan Equine. This is a synopsis of her journey in what has been a great year. ‘To be shortlisted as a possible Petplan Equine Sponsored Rider was exciting news. The next stage required votes and endorsements from family, friends, work colleagues and professionals. The support that came from the local equestrian community and the wider endurance community was humbling. The news arrived that we had passed the initial stage and that we should provide some video footage covering why I would be a good rider for Petplan Equine. This needed to show the horses and me in action although this would not be in competition or in ‘endurance’ mode as we were out of season. We videoed a lesson I had arranged and some additional footage training in the forest - on a murky misty day. I was delighted to receive the phone call to say I had been successful and to read some of the lovely endorsements that had been made to secure this, so thrilling. Thank you to each and every one of you who helped: it has meant such a huge amount. Petplan Equine’s objective was to secure seven Sponsored Riders who put their horses’ health and welfare at the heart of all they did and to support the riders’ progress in their equestrian careers by offering them sponsorship. Past competition successes with Marco include a Gold Award

at the Golden Horseshoe in 2009, 5th at Red Dragon two day 160km, and two 120km rides - in addition we have represented Scotland on four occasions. At 19 years old he is still competing, having been with me for the last 15 years; this year we reached 5000km of endurance rides together. We have also competed at Elementary level in Affiliated British Dressage, and competed at the British Riding Club National Championships in 2007 as well as other qualifications. Spangle has taken me into the world of FEI Endurance and completed a 1* 80km endurance ride in 2014; she was placed 3rd in the two day 120km at Red Dragon that same year. We also compete at local unaffiliated dressage. I also pride myself on being a volunteer at the Gordon Group of the Riding for Disabled, I am Secretary of Findon Riding Club and I have held the role of Chef d’Equipe of the Scottish Endurance Riding Team with the aim of inspiring others in the way the team competitions have inspired me. I just enjoy advising and helping in any way I can. During my sponsorship Petplan Equine has asked me to support a number of their ideas to help share horse health advice with owners such as the responsible riders quiz. They have provided support with raising my profile and followed my journey as an endurance rider this year in addition to training. The year finished with wonderful news that the sponsorship would continue. Thank you all once again for the support you have given me - I hope that my success will encourage some new riders and members to enjoy endurance which is a sport not to be missed.’

Sunny Days

HAZEL AT BRODIE CASTLE GEORGE MICHIE PHOTOGRAPHER

I

n December 2014 my daughter Shona and I were sitting having a cup of coffee, writes Hazel McCorkindale, looking back on a very successful year we’d had with our Crabbet-bred mother and son Arabs, Sefra and Sefra’s Blue Jewel (Sunny), and tentatively making plans for 2015. I had made the decision to retire Sefra (she is 22 and has done 12 endurance seasons, bred two foals and has over 5000k on her card) and bring out my other mare to do some pleasure rides and 30k competitive rides; Shona’s aim was to get their Gold Thistle award and represent Scotland again at the Home Internationals. Fast forward to February 2015 and time to get serious with the horse fittening programme, but Shona was strangely dragging her heels. When she finally ran out of excuses not to ride she had to tell us we were to become grandparents for the first

time in September (Wow!) and asked would I ride Sunny for the 2015 season as she thought he would turn into a feral elephant (he’s a very good doer) left doing nothing. Eek! Sunny is much bigger and more of a handful than my two wee mares and I’m not the most confident of riders but I said I’d give it a go. Training went well: I boxed him to local forest tracks initially as he’s much better behaved away - he’s a nightmare at home. My ambition for 2015 had been to take part in the Cairngorm 100 when the inaugural ride was first announced but that had been shelved when I retired Sefra. However, now the idea was growing again that if I could do a qualifying 50 mile ride with Sunny perhaps we could do the 50 miles at the Cairngorm. We entered a 50 mile ride at Brodie Castle in May and successfully gained the qualification we needed so put an entry in for the Cairngorm; we also put ourselves forward for team selection for the Home International at the Red Dragon. July saw us realise the dream of riding 50 miles in the Cairngorms through the wonderful estates of Invercauld, Mar and Balmoral on our way to Glen Clova in Angus, with Andrea Mitchell and her beautiful Arab mare Mehdami. We had 12 hours to reach the finish, the day was beautiful, the views awesome and the horses went so well together. We reached our last vet gate just as darkness and the rain arrived so had to complete the final 1000 foot descent in testing conditions and crossing the finish line was just emotional. I was so proud when my homebred boy won the Best Condition trophy in his class the next morning. The next big event for us was the Scottish Championships at Seacliff in August where we were entered for the 80k class and aiming to get Sunny’s Gold Thistle Final - plus it was the final selection ride for the Scotland team. The boy cruised round, getting both his award and selection. September saw the arrival of a future endurance rider (hopefully), my granddaughter Isla, but also my hubby suffered some ill health so I felt I should withdraw from the team competition. My family wouldn’t hear of it and everybody went out of their way to make sure we could go, I can’t thank them enough.

A couple of days before we travelled down to Builth Wells I got a phone call asking if I could move up classes from the 80k to the 2 day 120k. I felt Sunny was more than capable, wasn’t so sure about me but I’d give it a go. We had a ball, the weather was great, though a bit misty on day 1 but the going was just perfect - we finished 13th in the 80kER on day 1 and then to our delight 3rd in the Dragon’s Tail after day 2. The prize giving was very exciting with Scotland finishing in Silver medal position. Who could have known what a brilliant 2015 Sunny and I would have? It wouldn’t have been possible without wonderful family and friends who crewed for us around the country, bearing in mind if we do any rides outwith our own branch this involves a minimum 200 mile round trip on twisty country roads. Thanks Shona, Philip, Sheila, Dougie, Marina and Kenny.

AWARD PROFILES

AND THE WINNER IS….

A LOOK AT SOME OF THE MAIN WINNERS AT THE EGB AWARDS EVENING HELD IN NOVEMBER AT THE HINCKLEY ISLAND HOTEL The evening was organized by Larissa Whiley and Helen Newton, and generously supported by the Pure Feed Company Lane Team Awards and took yet another title – 1st place! Vic also received his 2400km Distance Award this year!

Diana Of Court Congratulations to YR Abby Chisholm and her 17 year old, 13.2hh PBA Diana of Court who collected their 4000km distance award at the weekend. The duo took 2nd in the Cairo Trophy which is awarded to the Part Bred Arabian gaining the most points in all types of rides and also 2nd in the Ragham Trophy which is awarded to the horse / pony ridden by Young Rider(s) gaining the most points in Graded Rides. “Diana has been competing for 6 years now and she has just gained her 4000km distance award. Although Supreme Champion A horse that undoubtedly needs no introduction this year’s Supreme Champion, Ghalib Zafir owned and ridden by Julie Martin. The 10 yr old pure bred Arab standing at 15.3hh is by Blacklord Sirdar out of AJA Ningella and was the leading Pure Bred Arabian gaining him 1st place in the Mesaoud Trophy. Julie been competing in endurance since 1977 and has owned Vic, as he is known at home, since he was a 3yr old. This was Vic’s fifth season of endurance, but not his first time in the ribbons. Vic was Reserve Novice Champion in 2011 and won the Royal Lord Trophy in 2012, awarded to the 7yr old first Open season horse. As well as taking the title of Supreme Champion, with prizes kindly donated by The Pure Feed Company, Vic was 3rd in the Jasper Trophy which is awarded to the horse / pony gaining the most points in their three best Graded Rides. And if that wasn’t enough Vic was 4th in the Senior Championship, ridden by Julie, and Emma, Julie’s daughter. Finally, Vic contributed to the West Riding Riders team in the Green Dragon 24

Photo taken at Wimpole Way in 2005.

Carol Fricker, his owner, was given the gelding as a 3yr old to sell on, and 17 years later he’s still with her. Backed and ridden by herself, the incredible duo have completed 6,877km together in EGB competition. Carol says she’s going to continue to compete Finch until he shows signs of wanting a quieter life, but as to when that will happen who knows, he’s certainly not ready to stop just yet.

she is small she is tough and has the attitude of a great endurance horse. Next year Diana will begin her years as a Veteran and I go into my last year as a young rider. We don’t have any major plans for next year just to enjoy ourselves and have another strong year of competition.”

Silver Linnet. Now aged 20, Finch as he is known at home, is still out and about competing in his 13th season of endurance since starting in 2002. Official members publication for Endurance GB

Daisy Strang and her lovely PBA gelding Ruwais Bolero were second place in the Young Rider championships, beaten by just 50 points! The homebred gelding has been competing in endurance since 2008 and this year took 1st place in the Cairo Trophy awarded to the Part Bred Arabian gaining the most points in all types of rides. Roo & Daisy were also 2nd in the Adonis Trophy awarded to the horse / pony gaining the most points in Competitive Endurance Rides in the current season. Three best scores to count. The pair were also 2nd in the Young Rider Grand Prix Trophy Awarded to the horse and Young Rider combination gaining the most points in Competitive Endurance Rides in the Endurance GB Ride Programme. Best three scores to count. Another brilliant combination!

Warrens Hill Chayze Our very own PR & Comms Director, Harry Ingram and his young Anglo-Arab, Warrens Hill Chayze have had a great 2015 season. Chayze won 1st place in the Windward Best New Horse Trophy awarded to the horse / pony gaining the most points in Competitive Endurance Rides in its first CER season. Harry was 3rd in the Jeffmaur Trophy Awarded to the horse and male rider combination gaining the most points in all types of rides. Chayze, (Chatanz x Cathy De Boisset (ex Dormane)), was also 7th out of the horses sired by AHS premium stallion. This was 7yr old Chayze’s third season of endurance and here’s what Harry had to say; “Chayze is a young horse, and whilst he has not done miles and miles he has spent a significant amount of time being prepared for his first season riding competitively. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in helping put the foundations in place”

Photo taken at Royal Windsor Horse Show by Bret Corcoran

Chayze finished first in both the CEI1* 90km at Haywood Oaks and the CEI2* 120km at Kings Forest this year on his first attempts at each of these distances against competitive fields. We look forward to see what 2016 brings for the winning pair.

competing endurance) is the icing on the cake. 2016 will be Sky’s last year in endurance as she is due to retire as a broodmare at Zayin, hopefully we will be able to add an FEI star to her CV!”

Junior Champion

Photo by kind permission of West End Photography

Junior Champion Maddie Pomroy and her 14yr old 14.2hh mare Zaferan have had a super season and are planning their first competitive race ride season next year. Homebred Zaferan, who is owned by Maddie’s grandmother, Jane Girling, achieved her 4800km distance award this year and was also the highest placed horse sired by an AHS Premium stallion. Zaferan was also 3rd in the Ross Trophy awarded to the most successful horse / pony bred by its current owner who must be an Endurance GB member. Awards were kindly sponsored by The Pure Feed Company. Well done Maddie, another successful combination!

Unregistered 2015’s best unregistered horse is Redwings Milky Way. Standing at 13hh and competing in endurance for three years Lumpy (as he is known at home) is now Advanced and helped secure 2nd place in the Junior Championships for his rider Keighleh Pomroy. Lumpy was a rescue pony from Redwings Horse Sanctuary and has taken to endurance like a duck to water, completing both a 65km and a 80km this year finishing with Grade 2 in each. Lumpy and Keighley also took part in the Inter-Regionals for the Iceni team to take first place. Sadly Keighley has now out grown him but has a new horse called AJ and will be competing at novice level next year. “In the 3 years I have had Milky Way we have had our ups and downs but all together it has been a privilege having such a great pony” What a great turn around story for a rescue pony

Paul Simmons Best EGB Male (Jeffmaur Trophy) goes to Paul Simmons this year, who has been competing in endurance for 5 years, with his mare, Sakeena Sky Zayin. Sky is a homebred Arabian ex-race horse who raced for three years and was placed before starting endurance. Sky also won the G Putnik Trophy for the best exracehorse in endurance this year. “Sky has had a such an incredible year this year winning 3 of her 6 starts in endurance, the highlight being the 120 km Exmoor Stag at the Golden Horseshoe and also winning our first race ride over 100 km at the College ride. Winning best EGB Male and the G Putnik Trophy (best ex race horse

Please put the date in your diary and more details will follow nearer the time. If you have any questions please contact us at youngriders@ endurancegb.co.uk

Beth Stokes - Chair I am 20 years old and this will be my third year as the Young Rider Chair. I was thrilled to receive the ‘Rosette’s Direct National Assistance Award’ at the AGM 2015 for my work as young rider Chair. I thoroughly enjoy helping Junior and Young Riders in endurance, it is my way of giving back to the sport as I have received and still do get so much help and support from others and that is what I love about the endurance community. I am always willing to help others so if you need anything, please just ask me and if I can’t help, I’ll do my best to find someone who can. I have two horses that I compete in endurance, 18 year old Maximillion and nine year old Emir. My aspirations are to compete on team GBR at a European or World Championships and bring home a medal! Outside of endurance I am in the second year of my law degree which I really enjoy. I only have two young rider years left and I am determined to make the best! I have so many amazing memories and experiences from being a part of EGB young riders and I want others to enjoy the sport as much as I do. 26

Katie Bedwin - South I am 18 and I have been competing in endurance for 10 years, with various horses. My greatest achievement was 2nd in the CEI 3* 160km at Haywood Oaks in 2015 and being Young Rider Champion in 2015, both with my 10year old pure bred Arab, Elayla. I also have 3 other horses to compete in 2016; Penhwnllys Samala de Mons, Burfield Goodie Two Shoes and Nahzira bint Chantanz. All my horses have been produced from youngsters by myself and are at different levels within endurance. I am currently studying at College, doing A levels, with the view of going to University in September to study Paediatric Nursing. In 2016 all my horses have different goals, with my ultimate dream being to take Elayla to the European Championships in Portugal in September. I have learnt so much through working with the other young riders, and I am so passionate about this sport; I really want to spread the ‘endurance love’!

Charlotte Chadwick - Midlands I am 15 years old and a member of Derbyshire EGB. I compete 3 horses; two of which at FEI level and the other one at competitive rides. My biggest success during 2015 was winning my first ever FEI2*YR and Best Condition at Keysoe, riding my horse, Hazelcroft Gosens Tsar. My personal aim would be to compete at a World Championships on one of my own horses that I have trained and brought up to that level on my own. I do endurance riding because I love working as a team and this year I was lucky enough to welcome Harry Hall into Team Chadwick. I put myself forward as the Midlands rep because I want to introduce more young people into endurance and help fundraising to help myself and others dreams come true and compete for our country. I was the North rep last year and I really enjoyed funraising at Lindum and meeting new people at the Pony Club Endurance Championships. Endurance January/February 2016

espite it being the off season, EGB South West has been busy during November and December. On Saturday 7th November we held our Annual Group Meeting, Dinner and Prize Giving at Lifton Farm Shop Restaurant, where we were served a wonderful locally produced roast dinner. This was a new venue for the event and a resounding success. Included in the top prize winners were Nicky Sherry and Silver Zourra, Judy Holloway and Aurontes/AA Talika, Young Rider Abby Chisholm and Diana of Court and Novice rider Megan Seedhouse and her pony Tresmeake Bay. The over the weekend of 5th and 6th December the Group attended the Christmas Equine Fair at Exeter’s Westpoint Arena. We had a stand, along with our Wessex neighbours, with our members chatting to the equine public about the joys of endurance with the aid of posters, handout leaflets, magazines and a video showing on a screen. There was a free prize draw for which the first prize was a year’s Associate Membership, as well

as “Introduction to Endurance” CD’s being given away. This had been very successful in the past encouraging engagement with the members on the stand. Our Associate Membership officer Vicky Mosey has been very diligent in following the progress of some of these people that have enquired and later joined as either Associate Members or full Members and thus learning about how we can encourage more people to take up endurance and join the group. EGB SW also held very successful and informative unmounted demos, of 30 minutes each, in the outside marquee arena on the two days of the fair with 3 different types of horses and riders of differing levels, Deborah Duncan did an excellent job as our “interviewer” so that we could inform the audience about the wonders and challenges of endurance riding. Carol Sobucinska with her lovely cob mare Venus told everyone about how she started at Pleasure Ride level and then as an Associate Member and is now competing successfully in GER’s. Abby Chisholm with her Part bred pony Diana of Court talked about how she

“I used my pure bred 7 year old Arab H S Fayrouz in the demo who managed to hold it all together even when the high winds were buffeting the marquee walls!” 28

got hooked on endurance as a child and how she progressed through the levels, explaining the differences between Novice, Open and Advanced and some of the longest and most difficult ones she had completed on her pony Diana. I then went on in my interview to explain about FEI and how you can progress if you have ambitions to ride for your country. I used my pure bred 7 year old Arab H S Fayrouz in the demo who managed to hold it all together even when the high winds were buffeting the marquee walls! We were all asked about our best moments in endurance and why we do it and what we love best about the sport. A brief vetting procedure was explained and also a short description of tack and crewing, with us showing this visually as much as we could in the time allocated. Some members of the audience then asked some very sensible questions which showed their interest and many then went back to the stand to pick up our leaflets with contact details and a list of our 2016 events and rides.

Finally on Sunday 13th December the Christmas Ride organised by Jo and Pete Claridge was held at Lanhydrock Estate near Bodmin by kind permission of The National Trust, Lanhydrock Estates and the Forestry Commission. Thankfully the windy and wet weather held off, and with the mild weather it made for very pleasant conditions. Along with a full contingent of happy helpers the riders fully participated in the Christmas Spirit by dressing themselves and their mounts in many spectacular outfits, and after a delightful jaunt around the estate were welcomed with a glass of warm gluhwein (non alcoholic of course) and mince pies. The prizes for the best dressed rider and horses went to mother and daughter Rose and Suzanne Ellison (pictured left). EGB SW has a full programme of rides in 2016 kicking off with the Hallworthy Pleasure Ride near Camelford on 7th February. All details on our website www.endurancegbsouthwest.com.

Cromwell Challenge Series

N

ew for this 2016, Cromwell Group are offering a special challenge series for competitors attending the 4 national rides they are hosting. It’s set at a level designed to appeal primarily to more novice or associate members but it’s open to all EGB and Pony Club members. It could equally well provide a bit of fun for the older horse (or rider!) who would like to set themselves an achievable goal; or for the open rider who simply prefers to participate in shorter distance classes. The rides in the Challenge Series are the Concrete Cows 20/3; Wimpole 12/6; College 7/8 and Hanslope 10-11/9. Riders simply enter classes as usual at these

events but can then submit their results using the special Challenge Series Record Card for additional awards at the end of the season. The record card and full rules can be downloaded from the Cromwell group website or from the ride website of the Concrete Cows ride, which is the first in the series of 4. The challenge series will run at 2 levels:• Cromwell Challenge Series – Competitors in all classes up to a maximum distance of 50km (+/5%). • Pleasure Ride Challenge Series – Competitors in Pleasure Ride classes only.

Results will be determined by Performance Formula. (for PR’s a final heart rate of 64bpm will be assumed in order to permit the calculation). You do not need to compete at all of the 4 rides in order to take part in the series as only your two best scores will be counted. In order to be eligible for awards entrants must also help (or offer someone to volunteer on their behalf) at one or more of the Cromwell Group events in 2016. This could include group training rides or supporting the inter-regional team as well as helping at one of the 4 national rides. We look forward to welcoming you to our rides!

Tanita: Horse of a Lifetime By Richard Lowe Iceni Group

I

n 1992, the then 54 year old, Jean Merchant was relatively satisfied. She had a job that she enjoyed which offered challenges and satisfactions but she wanted more in the other aspects of her life than a Lotus Elan had provided. Casting about for a wider interest she decided on riding lessons and was hooked on horses. It was hardly any time before she had to have a horse of her own. Knowing what she did about horses it will be no surprise to anyone that her first two choices were mistakes. Poor feet and poor behaviour resulted in a steep learning curve. These horses were kept at a livery yard where she made friends with whom she began to explore further afield, boxing to various parts of the North West. By chance she came across a flyer for the Endurance and Horse & Pony Society and she and her friends entered a number of pleasure rides. So far so good towards a long involvement in Endurance you might think. But three months after buying the second horse she was bucked off onto a concrete yard and broke her hip. Most normal middle aged women might then have taken up Bridge but not Jean. She sold the bucker and well before her hip was healed, in April 1995, she bought Tanita, a three year old Arab filly (by Kazmerek ex.Tantara) known ever after as Bridget. This, just backed, juvenile; the last horse that any knowledgeable person would recommend became a horse of a lifetime. Riding lessons continued and as her hip improved and confidence returned, Bridget began to learn her job. In August 1995 Jean was able to retire and devote herself to the task in hand. Wishing to take care of her own horse she enrolled at her local agricultural college, qualified (NVQ2) in horse management and moved to DIY livery. In 1996 she joined EHPS and spent 2 years or so learning the basics of Endurance. Then, in 1998, things got serious. Ten 40k rides (7 grade 1, three grade 2**) resulted in the combination – both novices – being National Novice Champions. This Jean described to me recently as “one of the most joyful experiences of my life.” Jean acknowledges that she learned a lot in those early years and later from others. She singles out Derek Barlow, Debbie Bennett and Evelyn Hulme for particular thanks. 1999 and 2000 saw Jean and Bridget competing very regularly, travelling the country and increasing the distances ridden. This despite Jean’s hip giving

problems that led to surgery in 2001. In mid-season 2000 because of pain from the hip Bridget was competed by a friend on some five occasions. The same year Jean had a pair of brick stables built next to her house, ripped up the lawn and for the next 15 years she and Bridget were rarely more than a few yards apart. Foot and Mouth in 2001 and the hip replacement, disrupted the progress that was being made towards horse and rider becoming advanced. Although success then came quite quickly: 2002 and 2003 resulted in 19 grade ones of which 8 were for rides of over 60k. In April 2003 came their first ER – 6th in the Lincoln Cup. Many successes followed and are for all to see on the EGB archive but the most successful year for the pair was 2005 notable for Lindum 100k 1st, Cirecester 120k 2nd, Kings Forest 82k 3rd. Bridget’s endurance career effectively came to an end at Ludlow in July 2006 with a grade 2 at 50k. Although she had not failed to complete a ride

sound since July 2004 Jean felt that she had done enough and retired her from competition. She then competed on other horses and briefly owned two others with 5 rides in 2007 and 2008 when her riding career ended with one last ride on Bridget. At Castle Howard in September they got a grade one at 30k. In addition to her riding career Jean has been an active member of Lancashire EHPS/EGB Group as a committee member and ride organiser. She has long been associated with the Croal-Irwell ride and more recently with developing new Pleasure Rides; at Formby (4years) and for this year Medlock Vale. She is currently group Vice Chair, Membership Secretary and Health and Safety Rep. The exceptional partnership of Jean and Bridget finally came to an end, after 20 years, in July 2015. Bridget had lived out her retirement, as she had lived for the preceding 15 years, just a few feet away from Jean’s sitting room window and is missed by all who knew her. A remarkable horse. A horse of a lifetime.

SUCCESSFUL TRIP FOR BRITISH RIDERS IN DUBAI

PRE-RIDE VETTING

T

he 9th January saw the 9th running of the HH Sh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup at the Dubai International Endurance City in the UAE. There were three British riders taking part; Nicki Thorne and Carri Ann Dark who both travelled their horses 4,000 miles from the British winter to enter the CEI3* 160km ride over the deserts of Dubai and Alice Beet who is based in the UAE and rode a locally trained horse. They joined a total of 227 riders from 41 countries in this truly International event, held under FEI rules. Things did not go according to plan ahead of ride day when several of the British contingent came down with suspected food poisoning, Carri Ann being the worse affected and needing hospital treatment. They all rallied for the main event but regrettably Carri Ann had not sufficiently recovered to cope with the major demands of this level of competition. Incredibly, she managed to ride 140 km before she finally admitted defeat. “It was not an easy decision by any means but I could not continue the ride knowing I was not well and not in a fit state for HS Drift, and as we all know 32

the horse comes first no matter what.” Alice Beet and Nicki Thorne fared better both completing the ride in great form in 60th and 80th place, respectively. As Alice admitted when she congratulated Nicki, her local horse, Chupa Chupa, was used to the tough conditions. “I can only take my hat off to Nicki. Bringing her own horse over here and completing this distance in such tough conditions is incredible. Absolutely inspirational.” Nicki was thrilled with her horse, LM Bolena. “I knew it would be terribly hard to prepare a horse through the British winter especially to contend with high winds and flooding and to come to the deep sand of the desert. So many factors from the travelling, to the heat and above all the deep sand made this ride so difficult. My amazing mare Bolena has taken the whole experience in her stride and proven yet again how exceptional she is. We have all been treated with such courtesy and kindness from every person at every level and in particular what has stood out to me is that this is much more than a race - it is more of an endurance convention where people with a passion for this sport and the

horses who compete in it have all been brought together in one.” Understandably, locally trained horses and riders with a knowledge of the terrain were dominant in the top placings. 1st place went to HH Sh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum (UAE) on Ajayeb at an average speed 24.4 kph. His horse was a previous winner at last year’s European Championships in Slovakia under the Spanish rider Jaume Punti Dachs. 2nd was Abdulla Ghanim Al Marri (UAE) on Quran El Ulm and 3rd Saeed Mohd Khalifa Al Mehairi (UAE) on Nabi Du Cassou. John Robertson, Chair of Endurance GB’s International Committee, was pleased with the performance of the British riders. “They rode very sensibly given that they had come from very different conditions in the UK to the heat of the desert. Their results showed that they had prepared well. Endurance GB is very grateful to the Dubai Equestrian Club for this opportunity for members of our International Squad to gain experience of riding under similar conditions to the forthcoming World Endurance Championships at the same venue in December.” Official members publication for Endurance GB

ENDURANCE GB END OF SEASON SURVEY RESULTS Over the 2015 season, the Rides and Rules Committee have been collecting online feedback from Endurance GB ride entrants. Thank you to every one of you who completed your ride questionnaires; over 2000 responses were received and the information gathered has been invaluable. We have feedback stored for every national ride bar the first two of the 2015 season, so if any ride organiser hasn’t received feedback for their ride then please contact the Rides and Rules Committee.

Conclusions On average 94% of riders were happy to recommend their ride to others. Consistently high scoring areas include the ride schedules, helpful officials, and general enjoyment. Weaker areas are missing/inaccurate information on ride or group websites, inaccurate ride maps/ descriptions, unclear car parking and speed of obtaining results. The top scoring rides, with the highest average scores taking all the answers into account were: 1) White Horse Wander (3.91 out of 4) =2) Golden Horseshoe (3.88 out of 4) =2) Long Mynd (3.88 out of 4)

156 questionnaires were sent out to people who had previously completed a post ride feedback survey and who had confirmed that they were willing to be contacted about their responses. 67 questionnaires were completed, representing a 43% response rate.

Rider goals Riders were asked which level(s) they rode at in 2015 and what level(s) they intended to ride at in 2016. Their answers indicate that a healthy proportion of riders intended to ride at a higher level in 2016 than they did in 2015. Over half of the riders achieved their goals for the season and around half were thinking of riding at 80km or above in 2016.

Riders were asked to rate out of 4, with 4 being the highest, how their season went and how likely they were to join/ride with EGB in 2016:

Ride preferences When the riders were asked for their favourite types of rides, smaller local rides and moorland rides rated most highly. Distance wise, rides up to 40km were most popular. Out of the longer distance classes, multi day rides were more popular than single day rides. When asked which ride was their favourite of the 2015 season, the top three came out as: Red Dragon Golden Horseshoe Barbury Castle & Lions Tail

Endurance | January/February 20 35

Ride decisions Riders were asked how far they would travel to a ride:

Riders were asked whether they had a crew when they rode. Nearly 40% of riders either never or rarely had a crew. Riders were then asked how long they rested their horses before working them at home and then before bringing them to another EGB ride. In terms of rest at home, around a third of riders held by the old adage ‘one day off per 10 miles/km ridden’. Nearly two thirds of riders left it at least two weeks before bringing their horse to another ride. Coaching & Development Around two thirds of riders were open to the idea of using a UKCC endurance coach: The main reason riders gave for not using a coach was that they felt that they were riding at too low a level to warrant a coach.

Volunteering Riders were asked how often they volunteered at rides:

The main reasons for not volunteering were a lack of time/busy work schedule, or not understanding what was involved/not knowing anyone. What did you learn? Riders were asked what they had learnt over the season. In the main, riders said that they had learnt to be patient and flexible, to listen to their horses and to never, ever give up.
