EDITOR’S COMMENT
H
appy New Year to all, although of course we are well and truly immersed in 2017 now! Following an excellent Awards evening, - well done the Williams Familyand the business of the Annual General Meeting, we go forward with plans for the coming season. An overview of the business of the AGM is in this issue. Congratulations to Judy Holloway, our new Supreme Champion with her horse Aurontes. We are planning to run a profile on this combination in the next issue of Endurance. Indeed, congratulations to everyone who took home an award in November, it is great to see so many achieving their goals, progressing towards long held dreams, racking up mileage year on year, and then celebrating together. We have some photos of the major award winners, plus the full list of Award winners in this issue.
As ever, as we head toward the new season, we are looking at planning ahead, particularly at this time of year, with regard to breeding or looking at bloodlines for endurance horses, and how this may affect your choice of stallion, or bloodlines to buy. Many Groups are running Training Days, and there are lots of social and pleasure rides out there for those who are missing the competitive edge of the national rides…but they will soon be upon us. As part of your planning for the coming season, make sure you are aware of the new Hat Rules that have come into force… it may well be that your current hat will not meet the new labeling requirements, so do check to make sure! To help with this we have included a photographic guide as to which labels are required, and given the link to the BHS website and information page, where
you can access more details. Once again, as we start a new season, I am asking readers, riders, crews, ride organisers, route markers, gates stewards, vet writers, Vets! owners, Mums, Dads, Farriers… anyone who involved with endurance to send in photos, send in news items, send in reports, send in anything that you think might be of interest or benefit to readers of the magazine…whether the paper version or the online version…Let the rest of the world know what you are up to. Catriona Moon did! What’s she up to? 100 miles to 1 mile 1 furlong… the Ride of Their Lives… want to know more? Checkout the News Pages. I look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks and months. Don’t let me down! CINDY

VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR
VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR Dear Members Happy New Year to you all! It was good to see so many of you at the Annual General Meeting last November. On behalf of everyone who attended the AGM or the Gala Dinner, I thank Ian Williams, Jane Williams, Anna Williams, Helen Boston and everyone else who was involved in organising the weekend. Congratulations to the large number of trophy and award winners who achieved so much during the 2016 season. Following the AGM, the two newly elected Directors, namely Nicki Thorne and Esther Young have taken up the roles of Quality and Welfare Director and Operations Director respectively. Sue Box has moved from Operations to Finance. Andrew Chisholm, having stepped aside from Finance, has taken on the role of IT Director. It was very pleasing to be able to announce several new initiatives for the new season. The new free Supporter e-Membership is being made available for several reasons. Firstly, if a full member needs to move out of the sport for any reason, then they can keep in touch at no cost by remaining as a Supporter e-Member. Secondly, everyone who wants to take part in national Pleasure Rides should now become a Supporter and record the details of their horse, making entries to all rides very easy. Finally, crews, officials, volunteers and friends of the sport can keep in touch as well by accessing e-versions of the EGB magazine. The new Bring a Friend scheme will enable our existing members to recruit new recruits to full, junior or young rider membership of Endurance GB, receiving an online voucher of £15 for each one recruited as a thank you. So, go out there and sell the sport that we all love so much. At the AGM, we also announced a pilot scheme for some new “levels” of National Championship aimed at those competing at novice, open and advanced level. These new levels will exist alongside the existing senior national championship held over a 160km CER and the young rider championship held over a 120km CER. So now the local Groups will be working hard to get the season off to a flying start with social and training rides, getting us all back into the swing of things. My thanks go to all the Group Committees who work so hard at the start of a new season. Thanks also go to our Ride Organisers will be pulling together their plans for the new season. I wish you all a successful and safe endurance year.

ENDURANCE NEWS BRITISH HORSE FEEDS SPONSOR 40TH ANNIVERSARY Red Dragon Festival of Endurance
British Horse Feeds is delighted to announce title sponsorship of the prestigious Red Dragon Festival of Endurance which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2017. Running from September 29 to October 1, 2017 the Red Dragon Festival of Endurance at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells is always a hugely popular event. Said John Hudson, Chairman of Endurance GB: “As organiser of the British Horse Feed’s Red Dragon Festival of Endurance I am so pleased that we are able to work with the team at British Horse Feeds once again. We are very fortunate to have British Horse Feeds as title sponsor for the very special occasion of the 40th anniversary of the event.” British Horse Feeds will be providing competitors with fabulous feed prizes
in their three sponsored classes; the Speedi-Beet Red Dragon (2 x 80km CER), the Fibre-Beet Dragon’s Tail (80km CER + 42km GER) and the British Horse Feeds’ Little Dragon (80km CER). Said Will I’Anson of British Horse Feeds: “I am very pleased to continue our long association with this prestigious ride. We look forward to the event continuing to grow and become even more popular as a celebration of endurance riding at all levels”. “Speedi-Beet is ideal for endurance horses as it is high in fibre, which helps provide the required stamina for horses to compete over long distances and the water content aids rehydration.” British Horse Feeds will also be running the popular ‘Best Crew Member’ Recognition Award. Details of this will be available in ride packs.

100 MILES TO 1 MILE 1 FURLONG… Ride of Their Lives
On Saturday 17 June 2017, at approximately 5pm, Catriona Moon will be 1 of 12 amateur riders lining up to ride in a 1 mile 1 furlong flat race on the famous Knavesmire at York Racecourse to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Catriona explained why she has taken up this challenge, and what’s involved: “I have never sat on a racehorse before and this race will take place at the end of a normal race day in front of a grandstand full of 25,000 people, with me on board a fully-fledged racehorse! Back in December when I sent off the application form this seemed a perfectly sensible thing to do but the next 5 months are looking pretty daunting just now! Getting to grips with riding in a saddle made of next to nothing with rather short stirrups whilst going at full pelt is just part of the challenge ahead of me. I also need to make sure I can pass the jockey fitness test at the Northern Racing College in early May to be allowed to race. If I mention that a 4 minute plank and achieving level 12 or over in th

the bleep test are required, alongside many other tests, hopefully you will appreciate the magnitude of the task ahead. All this whilst holding down a full time job as an equine veterinary surgeon at Station House Vets. Why am I doing this you ask? In February 2016 I lost my Grandma to pancreatic cancer and during the difficult period from her diagnosis to her departing this world I had close dealings with Macmillan Cancer Support. As she worked for Corals for many years, I decided that as a fitting tribute to my Grandma I would apply for a place in the Best Western Hotels and Macmillan Ride of Their Lives 2017. Sadly 1 in 2 of us will be afflicted with cancer in our lives. No one should face cancer alone and this is where Macmillan provide the most amazing support to anyone who needs it, not just those directly affected, but their family and friends too. They are there for us all should we ever need them. Without fundraising, Macmillan wouldn’t exist. I hope that you will share my journey with me over the next 5 months of intensive training and learning. It could
be rather entertaining as I have never sat on a racehorse before! I will be posting updates on www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Catriona-Moon as well as Facebook. Thank you for supporting me as I go from racing a horse over 100 miles in a day to just over 1 mile in a few minutes!”

RIGHTS OF WAY AWARD
The Second Competition Stallions Awards Presented at the British Stallion Event
Proposal for an award presented by the British Horse Society for the best prepared application for a definitive map modification order (DMMO) by a member of Endurance GB.
The second Competition Stallions Awards were presented at The British Stallion Event on 7th January to the top sires of progeny assessed by the British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity Evaluations 2016. The awards, now in their second year, are the brainchild of Jane Skepper, Director of the Competition Stallions Guide. “It has been exciting to see these Awards develop and the quality of the progeny going through the Futurity which are by these British based Stallions”, said Jane. ‘This year we slightly tweaked the criteria of Awards to come more into line with the current Futurity Awards and highlight Stallions siring high achieving Futurity scores in the Award Year rather than an average score.’ The Awards take place annually, based on the results of progeny presented at the British Breeding/BEF Futurity Evaluations in the single year. To be eligible for an award the stallion must be based in the UK and must have had at least 5 progeny forward at the Futurity Evaluations across any discipline with at least one progeny being presented in the Award Year. The highest futurity score in the Award year determines the winner and awards are made in each discipline: Dressage, Endurance, Eventing, Show Jumping & Sports Pony as well as an innovative Newcomer’s award. The Endurance Stallion Award went to Shuwaiman Al Rais. He is a pure Arab Stallion who competes in Endurance himself and sired the Endurance foal Kamili who received an Elite with the score of 9.25. He was bred and is owned by Jenny Lees of Pearl Island Arabians where he stands at Stud. Competition Stallions has now produced its 6th Edition of the Guide for Graded & Approved Competition Stallions. For further information and to obtain a copy, visit www.competition-stallions.com.
Background In 2026 all unrecorded public rights on routes in England that existed pre-1949 will be extinguished as a result of the Countryside & Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW). This means that every effort is required to identify these routes, to gather evidence – documentary or user – to support the case and apply to the relevant local highway authority to ensure that these routes are not lost for future generations of horse riders. The BHS has collaborated with the Ramblers and the Open Spaces Society to hold training courses across England and Wales on how to systematically research routes. Everyone, whether horse riders, walkers, cyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, or local historians, are encouraged to join in this project. The Award A cup will be presented by the BHS to be awarded each year for the best application sent by a member of Endurance to a local highway authority during the previous 12 months (September to September). Judging The judge will be Mark Weston, Director of Access and Rights of Way for the British Horse Society with the assistance of Sarah Bucks and Phil Wadey, coauthors of ‘Rights of Way; restoring the record’. The application will be judged on the basis of: • The usefulness of the route to local riders • The quality of evidence produced • The presentation of that evidence in the application • Evidence that all the necessary legal requirements have been met eg scale of plan, notification of landowners etc. A copy of the application with copies of the evidence used should be sent to Mark Weston at the British Horse Society, Access Department, Abbey Park, Stareton, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, CV8 2XZ, mark. weston@bhs.org.uk by the 30th September each year.

THE ENDURANCE GB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
An Overview of the Endurance GB Annual General Meeting Held on 19th November 2016 at the Daventry Hotel.
There was a good turnout of EGB members attending the AGM this year, and most appeared to be optimistic about the future, going forward. Cindy Russell gives an overview of the meeting: John Hudson, current Chairman of EGB rounded up the year in his report, reminding us that this is the first full year that the smaller (10 person) Board has been in operation, and this appears to be working well. John also explained changes at the BEF, where Claire Salmon has replaced Andrew Finding, as well as changes in the EGB office, as Olwen Bryer left to go to New Zealand, and her replacement, Emma Darwood took on the role of administrator. Following “thank you’s” to several members who had been put forward by Groups, John went on announce
that the two current Honorary Members of EGB, Des Payton and Brian Smith, are being joined by June Adams. John went on to say that 2017 will be a year of innovation for EGB, with a revised membership structure, a recurring membership renewals system and an extensive ride programme, with a new National Championship (details of this are elsewhere in this issue). Andrew Chisholm in his role of Finance Director delivered a positive report, with structured plans for the coming years, telling members that there had been a continued positive trend, and he had aimed to deliver a small surplus over the year. Exceptional costs in 2015 (explained as being legal fees) meant that there had been a small loss, and in the
coming year, there would be focus on consolidating the income from the Groups. Ongoing costs have to be taken into account, and Nick Walbridge who looks after the IT side is now paid a monthly retainer. In 2016 EGB received £10,000 from the ride held at Royal Windsor Horse Show , with a further £31,000 from events at Euston Park. International activity remains selffunding. £10,000 has been allocated for IT development, including equipment for Ride orgnaisers and Technical Stewards. It has also been factored in that these items will need updating in future years. As from 2017 there will be a recurring payment facility for membership renewal. For 2017 Membership fees will remain at current levels, however, there will be an increase in 2018. Ride entry fees will increase by £1 for all graded and competitive rides, but no increase in pleasure rides. No increase in late entry fees or Temporary Day Membership. Horse registration fees will increase by £1 for initial registration, and £2 for annual renewal. EGB will tender for auditors in 2017. Andy Thorne offered help with IT. Brian Floyd Davies, in his role of H&S director, gave an extremely short report. This was mainly about hat standards going forward (more information elsewhere in this issue) and what would be acceptable, or not. Brian is not standing again for the Board, and he was thanked for the work he has done over the past years. Following a short statement from Ann Dark, Development Director, where she thanked all who had supported development in EGB over the year, the next report was from Groups Director, Kerry Dawson. The highlights of the Groups year were the re-launch of the Nottinghamshire Group, which had
been very successful, and the launch of the Overseas Group, headed up by Carolyn Pacey. 300 events had been held throughout the year, and a great many helpers and volunteers had made this possible, Kerry thanked all who had helped for their generosity and support. John Roberston started his International Report with a list of where the squads had competed in 2016, Development Squad in Brussels, Young Riders in Rio Portugal, and the Elite in Samorin, Slovakia. During the year there had been training, and assessment of FEI judges, and an international forum. All squads are self funded, and the IC have decided that going forwards there will only be two squads; Junior& Young Riders, and the International Squad. In 2017 the JYR Championships will be in Verona Italy, in September, and the Seniors will Contest the European Championships in Brussels in August. Several members of the audience had comments to make about the change in the structure of the squads, and queried how riders would perceive the progression from national rides to international events, and where the support previously received through the Development Squad, would come from. Sue Box, Operations Director summarized the year in her report. EGB held two Volunteers Conferences, a TS workshop, and has arranged a TS mailing list for sharing of queries and best practice. There have been several new TSs but more are needed. Eight rides due to take place were lost over the year due to weather or other circumstances. There was an 88% completion rate across all types of ride. Challenges faced are: Late entries; Rest period enforcement and control and Maps. There are new initiatives in place to offer a new competitive structure over the coming year, and information about this will be forthcoming soon. One of these is a new National Championships pilot, that will run alongside the current championships for the coming year. Harry Ingram as Director of PR & Marketing offered an interesting overview. New initiatives are needed
in order to recruit and retain people in the sport. EGB is considering offering free membership to Pony Club, Riding Club and Retraining of Racehorses members. EGB loses around 20 – 30% of its members each year, and a questionnaire was constructed to discover why this happens. The most common reason is injury to the competition horse resulting in no horse to work with in endurance. The recurring payments scheme will help to ensure retention of members. There will be regular communication in the “down” season, which will help support members. There will also be a new grade of membership, Supporters, which will be a free membership for anyone who is involved in the sport, the sole benefit of which will be an online version of the magazine. This will enable people who are perhaps sidelined from competing, to keep in touch, and allow others such as crew, helpers etc to be more involved in the sport without extra cost to them. The BEF measure participation in sport, not membership and this should help to generate participation numbers, while also increasing awareness of EGB and endurance in the UK. Harry mentioned other initiatives that he hopes to work on further as 2017 progresses. Following the reports, John Hudson welcomed to the Board, Esther Young and Nikki Thorne, who were elected by default as there were no other candidates forward for election this year. John Robertson and Kerry Dawson remain on the Board also. The date of the next Annual General Meeting s 25th November 2017. At this point John Hudson announced that he will be standing down as Chairman from that meeting, He explained that he was announcing this now, to allow for succession planning. There were several questions from the floor and items of AOB, before John Hudson thanked the Williams Family for organizing both the meeting and the Awards Evening, and thanked the members for attending, then closed the meeting.
Proposals were emailed to all members (except those who have opted out of that scheme, to whom they had been posted) and the proposal number with result is all we have space to publish here. HATS
GET A HEAD – GET A HAT Many of you will have heard of the changes surrounding the riding hats regulations. The BHS have issued an article explaining these changes in full. Please note that in ALL cases EnduranceGB members will be required to comply with the new standards. It is also important to note that should you have any accident without an up to standard riding hat then it is likely that your insurance will be invalid. You only have one Head – so “Get a Head – Get a Hat” that complies with the new regulations!
Below is the link to the BHS website with the full details on the riding hat standards. The BHS has also created a very useful leaflet – you simply click on the leaflet link and it will take you to two pages of commonly asked questions, and on page three there is a good document that shows by photos the different type of labels to check so that you can see whether the hat you are looking at is compliant or not.

Alfa-A Oil Powering Performance Nutrition is a vital part of performance and whilst the right diet doesn’t guarantee you will win, the wrong diet guarantees you won’t. Feeding isn’t simply a case of supplying energy and nutrients to meet the demands of exercise – it is also vital for supporting health and general well-being. Things can go wrong if the diet isn’t right and this is often because we feed things that aren’t sympathetic to the horse’s digestive system, such as large quantities of cereals.
Scottish endurance rider Lianna Bourne feeds Retrosketch Ruby aka Holly Dengie Alfa-A Oil. “I wanted to change Holly on to a non-cereal diet as she had become quite excitable when fed mixes and cubes. However, I still wanted her to have enough energy for our endurance rides and was recommended Alfa-A Oil with Alfa-Beet to aid hydration and Alfa-A Balancer to provide essential vitamins and minerals. Holly loves her feeds, she had lots of energy without getting over excited, she’s looks the picture of health and her coat has a beautiful gleam too.”
FUELLED BY FIBRE Cereals contain high levels of starch which is broken down into sugar which may cause peaks and troughs in energy levels and can result in unpredictable behaviour. In contrast, alfalfa and oil can provide the same amount of energy as cereal based feeds but contain much lower levels of sugar and starch. Alfalfa also provides good quality protein which is essential for muscle development and repair and is also naturally abundant in vitamins and minerals. Feed

ADDED OIL FOR ADDED OOMPH Oil is very energy-dense and makes an ideal addition to your horse’s diet if he is working hard and needs extra energy. It also has the added bonus of promoting condition, healthy skin and beautiful coat shine. Dengie Alfa-A Oil is a pure alfalfa feed with a rapeseed oil coating and has the same energy level – 12.5MJ/kg - as a competition mix or cube, but with much lower levels of sugar and starch – on average about 10 times less! It’s ideal for fizzy individuals or those prone to muscle problems, contains no cereal grains and is free from molasses and preservatives. GUT HEALTH Weight for weight, fibre feeds take about three times longer to chew than cereal-based feeds, which helps to produce more saliva to regulate acidity in your horse’s gut. The presence of fibre in the gut also helps reduce acid splashing onto the delicate upper part of the stomach. Feed a double handful of chopped fibre before schooling or fast work to keep the stomach in good health.
TOP TIPS FOR FEEDING THE ULCER PRONE HORSE • Feed plenty of forage to increase chew time and saliva production • Use highly digestible fibre sources like alfalfa with added oil to meet energy requirements rather than cereal based concentrates • Feed a small amount of chopped fibre before exercising to help prevent stomach acid coming into contact with the upper, unprotected non-glandular part of the stomach • Try to avoid stressful situations, which may include reducing exercise activity and competing • Turnout at much as possible • Provide access to water at all times INDEPENDENT RESEARCH HAS SHOWN ALFALFA IS A BETTER BUFFER TO ACIDITY THAN OTHER FIBRE SOURCES DUE TO ITS PROTEIN AND CALCIUM CONTENT Dengie’s Alfa-A Oil and Healthy Tummy both proudly display the new BETA Approval Mark for products suitable for horses prone to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS). Products that have this endorsement have undergone independent testing thereby helping owners to make educated feed choices to improve the health and well-being of their horses and ponies. Rebecca currently has two horses: Zeus (21) whom she owns and Kal Baishakhi (11) bred and owned by Karen Wood. We asked how she got involved in the sport. Some 12 or so years ago I broke my neck and fractured my skull into 8 bits in a hacking accident on Zeus. At the time I was a professional show jumper. This injury combined with my progressive condition EhlersDanlos Syndrome with related arthritis, cardiomyopathy and erythromelalgia means that my mobility is now severely limited and I struggle with pain each and every day as well as memory issues. I began riding some time after my big accident on Zeus (that’s another tale in itself!) and started exploring Thetford Forest where I then lived. Seeing markers on the ground one day I asked around about them, and was told they were for an endurance horse event - I had never heard of endurance riding before (although I have since calculated that I did 2-3 hacks per week of between 50-80km on some of the jumpers!) and set off to my first endurance ride of 40km at the North Norfolk ride - all I knew was a km was less than a mile and it sounded like fun! We were greeted at the Secretary’s tent with helpful happy people who explained what the day was about, I told my carer he should ‘crew’ me and he was sent off with a map and a couple of slosh bottles! It was the best day and I found a sport I loved even more than jumping! We were asked to represent the Iceni team at the inter regionals which was a great honour and so exciting to be welcomed into the endurance family. Jump ahead a few years of being novice and learning
the job, including crewing other people for experience I had moved to the South East where I am now based and was ready to attempt some Open and Advanced rides with Zeus. He was loving the sport and just ate up the miles, but because of my physical issues I had been told I wouldn’t be capable of doing the longer distances with vet gates and sadly I had listened to those people and Zeus’ best years were spent at Novice level where I now know he could have gone a lot further than 80km. Even as a Veteran horse he found that distance easy! So it was time to look for a younger horse to bring on. I was very lucky that Karen trusted me to partner her very special homebred horse, Kal. He came to me in Septmeber 2012 and six days later I took him to Windsor Pleasure Ride. We had a great time and that was it, I was in love with the lad from Devon! We squeezed in a few more PRs including travelling to Derbyshire and camping on a bleak hillside for a 32km PR! 2013 was a fantastic year, Kal was 8 and a good age to be fully grown up physically and my goal was to progress him to open mid season and do a 65 with him, but mentally he just didn’t feel ready so we stayed at novice, doing 40ks with success and lots of Grade 1s! 2 rides from the end of the season someone told me I was doing well in the Novice horse trophy - I didn’t even know annual trophies existed then! So I looked further into it and decided rather than doing a last ride at 65km I’d do 2 at 40 and see how we did nationally - I was over the moon to find out he was National Novice Champion at the EGB gala and awards night! Not a bad result to the year.

THE YEAR AHEAD SERC’s ride calendar for 2017 looks like a vintage offering. Here we feature one ride from each Branch, as chosen by one of its members, for you to consider putting on your wish list.
GRAMPIAN: SPYHILL Carol Potter writes: Grampian Branch area stretches from the beautiful white sand beaches in the east, rising through countless forest tracks to Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms. If I had been asked to write about my absolute favourite Grampian ride sadly it’s one I only did once: my first ever endurance ride, Drummuir, with hills and rugged moorland that just wowed me, I fell in love with the sport. To my delight after years Drummuir is back on the calendar for 2017 - I can’t wait to refresh my memory of the colours of the heather and the rolling hills. Back to 2016 though. I really can’t choose a favourite! I love cracking views and a good old canter so Spyhill was a pleasant surprise. Forestry Commission rides can sometimes be stony, chilly and lacking in views, but these tracks are covered in a strange surface enabling long canters through the tall pine trees; as the track loops around the Burn of Sheeoch riders are treated to fabulous views across the small valley, eerie in mist. Clashindarroch is always a stand-out ride in the beautiful hills with the longer routes taking in the perfect manicured grass tracks of Coynachie. I only did the shorter distance so was on my own for most of the route; while I missed the grassy tracks I was treated to spotting deer and lots of buzzards and kestrels enjoying the sun. However, for pure fun without the challenging hills it has to be

HIGHLAND: BRODIE CASTLE Diane Michie writes: Well, it has to be my own one of course! The Darnaway ride, now known as the Brodie Castle Ride (and Championship venue). The Darnaway ride has run for well over 20 years now so is a well-established route. I took over the running of it about 15 years ago and it has grown immensely from probably a

Tahuna: white sand, crashing waves and lots of smiley faces. It’s almost a fun ride, not endurance, as riders find time for a good old splash in the sea and generally act like big kids. I was joined by Anna Armstrong and Lola on her first ever beach ride trotting in perfect sync with my Welshie, Ollie. I’d highly recommend the trip to Grampian: they offer some tough rides and some beauties that even take in the grounds of Balmoral Castle. Tahuna – 25 June 2017
Pleasure and 30 - 50k to a 2-day 160km and 3-day classes at the Championships. This is also my training ground with Skylark’s Discovery (Disco), incorporating the Culbin Forest side too. It is definitely not a highly challenging route but it definitely is quite a technical route with the mixture of terrains. You have it all from the harder forest tracks (not many!) to lovely grassy canter tracks to sandy, heathery tracks, then a small section of softer but safe leafy areas. Thanks to Lesley Bell and all my helpers on the ground, this year Disco and I decided to enter the 30km Open at the Championships. He is on the lower distances nowadays, no need to do high mileage when he has proved himself 5 times at 2-day 160km. I must admit ... I had a plan … not that we are competitive in any way of course. We watched our class start and waited for the right time to set off. Trot trot trot over to Darnaway Estates, through the heathery tracks and into the forest … I had no brakes! Disco boy knows when it’s a competition all right. Our crew met us at the crossing … never to be seen again! Before we knew it we were approaching the finish at Brodie Castle. Wow, what a great time we both had. My boy just loves his sport. To top it off we won the 30km Open class. So Skylark’s Discovery’s name now joins my old boy Trigger on the trophy which he won at the age of 23. I hope we see many of you come up this year and have a ball at Brodie Castle in July. Sue Rogers writes: For years driving up the A68 my eye has been caught by the distinctive two hills near St Boswells. I often wondered what lay over the other side. Now I know, thanks to SERC Borders, as I have ridden through the ‘gap’ many times. I am not sure that I can separate one year from another. All I do remember is that it is always fun and a moment of revelation as one goes over the top. Golar (Gold Aramis) and I love little twisty paths with hilly and rough going. He is so well balanced he never gives me a moment of anxiety. He decides the pace we go, all set by the terrain. Even though he is now a veteran, his brain sometimes forgets that he is old and he sets off faster than he can really manage. He reluctantly slows down before the top. This is the only way I have been able to monitor his gradual decline through his
ARGYLL: ARGYLL CHALLENGE Hazel McCorkindale writes: Argyll is the smallest branch of SERC with only about ten regular riders, but we are very active with rides running throughout the year so it’s very difficult to pick a favourite as we have some fabulous countryside to ride in. However, this year I am picking Argyll Challenge as my favourite. I am the ride organiser for this ride so don’t normally get the chance to take part, but we hosted the Capercaillie Challenge this year - which is an interbranch competition and I rode my 20-year-old THF Silvallyah in the 50k class as part of the Argyll team. The ride takes place just south of Oban on the west coast of Scotland and as the name implies it’s very challenging with the fastest

Jean Gilbert writes: As a teenager, I was often allowed to exercise my cousin’s horse on the beach where I lived in Ayrshire, and even now, many years later, I love taking Rowan down to our nearest beach for a gallop. This year, for the first time, the Dumfries group put on a beach ride at Powfoot, within easy reach for us in Keswick, so I was over the moon. Jill Templeton wanted to tag on, though her horse Cayenne had never seen the sea, and Jill was a bit apprehensive to say the least. We met up at the flat spacious venue and set off down a track to the beach, past a couple of pigs, which thankfully were at the far end of their enclosure. To start with the going was stony, but we soon reached the
twenties. One day he will tell me that that was one hill too far and then we will know it is time to stop. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful country to ride over, new areas to explore, new terrain to test our horses on, with us all learning new skills every time we take part in a ride. But these opportunities would not occur without the tireless ride organisers and their teams of volunteers and the generosity of farmers and landowners who allow us to ride across their land. We have a lot to be grateful for. The end of the season is the moment to reflect on what we have learnt, to plan for next year and to realise what a difference it made to our lives when each one of us discovered the joys of endurance riding. Each time I ride out I can see the Eildons in the far distance, a reminder that there is a new season just round the corner. Eildons – 13 & 14 May 2017 speed of the day being 11.4kph; the venue is in a beautiful glen (I may be biased as it’s where I live!). The route follows the single track road out of the glen then through rough pasture and very hilly forestry tracks before dropping down to sea level and onto some fab grassy farm tracks where the views out to the islands of Mull, Seil, Luing, Scarba and beyond to Jura are just amazing. Then it loops back over more farm tracks and fields with a big river crossing before heading back up the glen to the venue. The conditions underfoot and overhead were great this year which made it even more special. Riders commented not only about the spectacular views but that even the golden eagles had come out to see what was going on. Argyll Challenge – 10 September 2017
firm sand and I took the lead with a steady trot. I told a tense Jill behind us that I was going to canter, and set off slowly, with a whimper behind, which I pretended not to hear, carrying on regardless. After the first few minutes, Jill relaxed, and by the time we reached the checkpoint at the far end where we had to turn back to come off the shore into a caravan site, she was up for a faster speed. There was a mile or two along quiet roads, through a village, along a path in a wooded glen, and all too soon we were back at the venue, safe and sound. In 2017 the group are putting on a competitive two day ride at Powfoot (within easy reach of Cumbrian EGB members) and, I dare say, Jill will be up for another gallop on the beach… Powfoot – 8-9 July 2017

GLASGOW: DOUGLAS & ANGUS ESTATE
Pam Campbell writes: A new ride for Glasgow branch this year was the Douglas and Angus Estate ride in October. Just off the M74 on the outskirts of Douglas the venue offered great views, including Stable Lake – complete with stately swans, Castle Dangerous (the remnants of the castle built in 1457) and the Cameronian Memorial. Parking was a doddle, even for someone like me who is challenged on the reversing front. After getting my trusty pony Bailie vetted we set off with riding partner Lynsey McLernon and her handsome steed Ben. The first part was along the all-weather path passing Stable Lake and following a river. A few fields and a couple of bridges and we reached a mini
TAYSIDE: LINDERTIS Kirstie Graham writes: When my lovely little mare Bella was getting close to her 5000km milestone, I knew I wanted to log that achievement at one of my local branch rides. Tayside, in the heart of Scotland, is fortunate enough to have a range of fantastic rides, from the beach at Tentsmuir, the hilly forestry of Dunkeld and historic tracks of Scone. My 5000th kilometre stride was taken in March at the Lindertis ride, near Kirriemuir in Angus, a varied ride of estate tracks, quiet lanes and open moorland. My daughter Imogen (then 13) agreed to accompany me on her Connemara Fennela. The weather was chilly but dry, which is the best you can hope for in Scotland so early in the year. I have ridden and helped at many Lindertis rides and have experienced strong winds, icy rain and
LOTHIANS: FELTON Dot Ross writes: I love an excuse to dress up – especially on horseback. For the Felton ride in October I was a witch. A purple one. Two ballgowns that I no longer fitted were sacrificed to make myself a boho witch outfit. Beanie didn’t mind. I opted to ride with a couple of friends on Icelandics who said that they weren’t going to go very fast. That suited me as I have turned into a woosie in my old age. We set off along a farm track, crossed a major road with some roadcrossers and through a farm, turning onto an old drove road where a long, wide grassy track beckoned. As I was towed along at

Stonehenge, large granite blocks perched at a great viewing point. Our journey took us uphill, allowing us stunning views of the lake and land below. After a bit of road work we navigated our way through trees and over a truly man-made walkway/bridge – the two men that made it were still there to oversee all that dared to pass! They were definitely NOT trolls though… Another field and bridge took us back to the main track and we followed the river, then paddled through it, and back to Stable Lake. More fields and then onto some undulating terrain. This part of the ride was home to lots of cross country jumps – they were optional! A leisurely walk home and we were at the finish. Great weather, stunning views, fab ride partner and both horses round and sound – what more could one ask of a
ride, you say? A burger of course! Glasgow Branch had a barbeque for charity – great weather for it so would be wrong not to. Riders were definitely well fed, and proceeds went to local charities. With plans afoot for a two day pleasure ride at the same venue it will definitely be on my wish list for 2017. Douglas & Angus Estate – 1 October 2017
even snow so the weather gods were being kind. The route was so familiar navigation wouldn’t be a challenge and Imogen and I set out to ride the world’s safest steadiest ride. The estate tracks were deep and chewy so we took it steady, rising out of muddy woodland to join a lovely grassy canter track to a quiet road. Turning down a track we passed delightful houses tucked away in the pretty Angus countryside then the village of Kirkton of Airlie. Before long we were heading to Egnomoss moor. In direct contrast to the cosy village scene, the moor has a sense of wild remoteness, with care to be taken over the tussocky, uneven ground. Off the moor, a brief turn around some bridle tracks and through another village before heading back across the moor and realising the 19kms are over too quickly and we are back at the steading. Our cautious riding was repaid with relaxed
sound ponies that vetted immediately and only then did I allow myself to celebrate. 5000km on my pony and I have loved every one of them. Cakes and smiles all round! Huge thanks to ride organiser Jacqueline Walker and the helpers and to Tayside Branch, who welcomed Bella and me at our first ride in 2003 and have supported us every step of the way. Here’s to the next 5000km. Lindertis – 19 March 2017
speed in the wake of two hairy Icelandic backsides, dodging the clumps of turf that were thrown up in my face, I did ponder if this was slow, I wouldn’t like to see fast! Speed changed rapidly when one of the Icey riders had a wardrobe malfunction and her veil flew off, landing at Beanie’s feet. She did a prop stop, snorted and then carried on with barely a break in pace. I can usually depend on my mare to be sensible. Smiling gate openers cleared the way onto more grassy tracks, past the golf course and up into the lowland hills. We were fortunate to have a lovely, bright sunny day, even though it was the end
of October. As we crested the final hill, a spectacular vista opened up of many distant hills clothed in rich autumn colours. Our track wound its way off into the distance, encouraging us to follow. As we crossed this remote moorland section, I was reminded of the far north, with the gorse, heather and coarse grass. The track was stony, but we picked our way carefully back down to lower levels, where the topography became more gentle, back again to open fields of short cropped grass, stone walls and little streams. What a superb route! All too soon we were back at the venue. Time to cool off, vet and consider our next outing. Felton – 22 October 2017

Some Thoughts on Preparing for 2017 From Jean Lloyd
With another season of competition fast approaching, here are some thoughts on preparing for and completing, an enjoyable and successful programme of rides in 2017. Hopefully these notes might inspire some people to aim a bit higher than they originally intended..attempt a longer distance or a more challenging ride…or both!
F
or those just starting out in endurance or maybe returning after a break, I would like to think that confidence and enthusiasm will be boosted if these suggestions are followed, wholly or in part. I began endurance in my late forties with a homebred 7/8 TB 18 year old mare who was a brilliant hunter / team chaser (we also did some eventing, but she thought the dressage was a waste of time!) She had sprained a suspensory ligament out hunting, and the veterinary advice was that she should not jump any more, so I thought, let’s have a go at this endurance lark! We had a great time for three years and the point I make is, don’t let age of yourself or your horse put you off getting started or progressing in competitive rides; neither is it necessary to have an Arab! In those days, nearly 25 years ago, there was a system involving progression to Bronze Silver and Gold level and the awards at each of those levels were a good incentive to progress. My horse and I travelled to rides in an old cattle truck, with 3 or 4 other combinations and this led to people encouraging one another and the attitude of “if she can do 40 miles (64km) then so can I!” CHECKING THINGS OVER Before starting on your horse’s fitness, it is advisable to have him or her checked over by a vet, to avoid problems later and deal with any minor issues. This also can give you the go ahead for your plans, especially if your horse has had problems previously. If you have an excellent equine vet then all should be well, but if you have someone not especially experienced with competition horses, it could be a good idea to get a fresh eye to look at your horse – with permission from your usual vet. You should also ask veterinary opinion on your horse’s shoeing; many Endurance Jan/Feb 2017
farriers fo an excellent job, but again, an alternative expert view can be useful. A change of farrier or change of shoe type can have a major effect on the horse’s way of going, and avoidance of lameness. You could also ask your vet’s permission to have your horse checked by a physiotherapist, but make sure that the one you use has undertaken the necessary training and is fully qualified. If you get your horse’s teeth checked regularly, all should be well, but otherwise do get a check done. I am a member of a racing club, and one of the club’s horses had become wild and dangerous on the gallops. When he stopped eating, the dentist was consulted and a decayed tooth removed – no more crazy antics! Another important check is on the fit of your tack, in particular your saddle, but don’t ignore your bridle, breast plate and martingale! The saddle will need checking at intervals during the season as you horse changes shape. There are some excellent saddle fitters available…look for recommendations. GETTING ADVICE Consider booking a course of lessons with a local BHSI or qualified coach. This will make you aware of any errors in your position in the saddle and use of the aids. Of particular importance is sitting straight and in balance, as it is far more difficult for a horse to carry a lop-sided or unbalanced rider, especially over longer distances, and can lead to back and lameness problems over time. Some of the lessons should be, if possible, taken on different horses. This can be a revelation in showing that while your own horse may accept certain things that you do, others do not understand and either don’t react or actually object! These lessons will help with providing suppling exercises for your horse and yourself, plus sharpen your reflexes and metal agility.
THE FITNESS PROGRAMME With the aforementioned checks in place, it is time to consider the fittening programme. If your horse has been completely turned away for a couple of months, then it will be necessary to do 3-4 weeks of walking exercise, starting with 30 minutes a day in the first week, increasing to an hour in the third and fourth weeks with some short trots included in the latter. Walking up and down hill is invaluable, and trotting uphill also, at the appropriate stage. Do not trot downhill until fitness, balance and suppleness have been re-established. I will say here that I am not in favour of horses being turned away for months at a time, unless unavoidable. This is especially the case with older horses and I prefer that they are kept “ticking over” other than maybe a couple of weeks break. When horses have been completely roughed off it is often the case that soundness problems occur when they are brought back into work, or a historic problem recurs. If a horse has been turned away because of an injury, then extra time and care needs to be taken, and more time spent walking. It is important to stress that with all horses the walk should be a good brisk 4 time pace. My horse, Broadstone Charade, was a TB with an exceptional walk! I normally work my horses five days weekly. Once your horse is at the stage of doing some trotting or has been maintained at a low level of fitness during the off season, you can increase the trot work over a couple of weeks and do some work in the school, either on the lunge or ridden. LUNGING CAN BE USEFUL Lungeing should only be 15 – 20 minutes total, working equally on both reins and ridden schooling should initially be 30 minutes progressing to 45 minutes, again working equally on both reins. Don’t concentrate on the 19
TRAINING
rein that is easiest and feels best! Once or twice a week is adequate for sessions in the school, occasional lungeing is valuable as you can see all the muscles working across your horse’s back (best without the saddle) . You can teach your horse to really stretch over his back and work with a low head carriage (below knee level), which is a valuable loosening and stress relieving exercise. Horses mimic the handler/rider so if you bend from the waist towards the ground and lower your arm, your horse will soon get the message. You can use the word “down” or “low” in drawn out tones and this exercise can then be incorporated into ridden work for short periods, using the voice aid and giving the rein. Remember when lungeing that to slow the pace and /or reduce the circle, step towards the forehand and shorten the rein. To increase the pace, step towards the hindquarters and indicate with your whip towards there the rider would be using their leg. Voice aids can be useful here too. Reducing and increasing the circle is a valuable ridden exercise, using an open rein to reduce the circle and an indirect rein to increase it. Be careful that the hand is always allowing and does not move backwards. Serpentines can also be ridden using the same principles. I learnt the value of such exercises in my dressage days, when training with Stephen Clarke, now famous as a dressage coach and Olympic judge, but they are valuable for all horses. You can now begin to introduce steady canters into the hacking and school work, and one day a week, extend the hack to one and a half hours. In the first week of canter exercise, as always start off with the usual walk/trot routine before cantering for 2 – 3 minutes, then repeat the sequence a couple of times, finishing with a cool down period of several minutes walking and allowing the horse to stretch down as discussed earlier. Observing the same basic rules in the second and third week of cantering, you can increase the canters to 4-5 minutes and extend your hack on one day of the week to two hours. Include some cantering uphill, if possible a couple of days per week and also some bursts of strong cantering for 1 – 1 minutes as part of the 4 – 5 minutes, on the other days. MAKING ADJUSTMENTS It may be necessary to make some minor adjustments to the programme 20
outlined, don’t be afraid to decrease work for a few days as horses are all different, and some will get fitter quicker than others, especially if they have been at the required level of fitness in the past. There is nothing like knowing your own horse and judging condition and enthusiasm for the work as well as fitness level. A heart rate monitor is useful for the latter. If you use the same stretch of land for some of your canter work and note your horse’s heart rate in walk before work and at the end of each canter, then monitor how long it takes for the rate to return to the starting rate. Use the same distance on the same stretch of land when doing ordinary canters and those including the strong canters. You should see improvement by the end of the programme I have detailed and the information obtained will be useful when you wish to progress to competing regularly at advanced level. It is important to remember to work your horse on varying terrain and different going to avoid problems when encountering differing conditions at rides. Make sure your horse will go through water by following a lead horse initially, backwards and forwards if necessary. At rides, be careful to see and follow any instructions for crossing water; I once missed a sign instructing us to keep right…and kept left…nearly submerged! Also make sure you do some of your walking and trotting on the road as you are sure to encounter some roadwork on rides. When you have planned the rides you wish to attend, remember that you will increase your horse’s fitness by competing and you cannot go on making your horse fitter and fitter without over-training and risking a sour, worn out horse, with reduced capacity to continue competing in the future. Therefore, at a couple of stages in the season, reduce work to light exercise for 10 – 14 days then pick up fitness levels again. Many horses have had their careers curtailed through failure to observe this practice.
THE IMPORTANCE OF REST Horses also need rest days after a ride; one day for each ten miles ridden in competition is a rough guide, but I always added on an extra day for the travelling, or longer if it had been a very long journey. Using the information given, you can plan around your main rides, remembering it is not necessary to actually do a 64km or 80km ride at home before tackling these distances in competition. Trainers do not gallop their horses for 4 miles in preparation for the Grand National! A fair guide is that if you do the ride distance as the total work for the penultimate week of training, your horse will cope well with covering that distance in competition. In the week immediately before a ride, I believe in only light work, although others may disagree, veterinary research supports this. Happy training and competing!

FUTURITY
ENDURANCE FUTURITY REPORT
T
he 2016 running of the Baileys Horse Feeds/ British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity saw some very high scoring Endurance young-stock. The highest ever elite Endurance Futurity premium was awarded to a colt foal owned and bred by international rider, Chris Wray. An elite Futurity premium indicates that the horse has the potential and outlook to perform at international level. Endurance evaluators for the 2016 Futurity were Jo Claridge and Rosemary Attfield. Colt foal, Kamili (Shuawaiman Al Rais x Cloud Stepper) took his elite premium score of 9.25 at the Hartpury Futurity. A delighted Chris said: “This result is just fantastic, I was stunned to discover when I got home from Hartpury that Kamili has gained the highest Futurity score ever awarded to an endurance horse. Futurity evaluator Jo Claridge said Kamili is extremely nice and has great potential.” Jane Marson of the Heritage Coast Stud in Norfolk earned a higher first premium of 8.88 with her yearling colt, Heritage Vadel (Vadeer x Khamil) at the Writtle Futurity. Jane bred Heritage Vadel from her third
generation homebred mare, Heritage Silver Delaney. Jane said: “We are very excited about Vadel, he will stay entire and will be broken and compete in dressage and showjumping before going on to have an endurance career when he is six or seven. His sire, Vadeer has become a very successful endurance stallion with medallists at both WEG and the European Championships to his name, including the Spanish team horse, Straw Blade and Carri-Ann Dark’s successful horse, Va Va Voom.” Heritage Vadel has one full brother and former Futurity entrant, Heritage Superman is also out of Heritage Silver Delaney. Rebecca Cross’ two-year-old, Future Inferno (H Tobago x The Outlaw) took the best score of 2016 for his age group. He gained a higher first premium of 8.83 at the Writtle College Futurity. Future Inferno was bred by Julia Hodkin of Future Sport Horses from Julia’s mare, Future Illicit Affair. Future Illicit Affair is in the SHB GB Head Stud book and has won broodmare championships at county level showing. Another British Endurance team rider, Karen Jones did very well at the Futurity. Karen’s two-year-old filly, Seren Sarella (Winged Saint x Hanson) bred by Dominic and Jan Atkinson of Seren Arabians in Cumbria scored a higher first premium of 8.80 at Tall Trees Arena in Cornwall. Karen said: “I am over the moon with Sarella, it is the first time I have been to the Futurity and she was brilliant.

She is a very nice little horse and I have competed some of her family so am really looking forward to riding her in a couple of years. The horses bred by Dom and Jan Atkinson are big boned horses that have lovely movement and can do any job. I went up to their stud in Cumbria to buy a horse called Seren Hanau and bought Sarella too.” Karen recently won the 130km Cirencester Endurance ride on another horse by Winged Saint, Treasured Moonbeam. He is now being aimed at the 160km Red Dragon ride at the end of the season. Colt foal, Cumbria New Dawn (Cumbria Black Beaujangles x Alhaaarth) took a higher first premium score of 8.71 at the Richmond Futurity for Tom Walling from Cumbria Arabians in Selkirk. Tom’s girlfriend Fiona Pearson said; “We are just thrilled with the score, this is the first time we have been to the Futurity.” Tom bred Cumbria New Dawn from his thoroughbred mare, Feminist who won and was placed in flat races. Fiona continued: “We wanted to breed an Anglo-Arab foal and used our stallion Cumbria Black Beaujangles. Feminist is back in foal to Cumbria Black Beaujangles for 2017.” Fiona added: “Cumbria New Dawn is for sale and we are hoping that his good Futurity score will attract good competition riders to come and see him.” Davina Godwin was thrilled with her three-year-old colt, Red House Valentine (Al Hudaydah x Ali Khaziel) who headed his age group for endurance entries at the 2016 Futurity. He scored a higher first premium of 8.63. Davina said, “We are really pleased with the mark awarded to Red House Valentine. Futurity evaluator, Jo Claridge said she will be ‘looking forward to his future career.’” Davina is planning for Red House Valentine to stand as a stallion at stud. She added: “I would like him to compete in all the ridden disciplines – not just endurance. His halfsister, Azalea is a very successful show horse.” Red House Valentine was bred by Dr G von Tevenar. Two horses scored higher first premiums of 8.50 in the endurance section of the 2016 Futurity. First was Dom and Jan Atkinson’s three-year-old, Seren Sadrh (Winged Saint x Silver Fahd). Dom said: “We are planning for Sadrh to stand as a stallion and he will also hopefully go on to have an endurance career. I don’t believe in starting them until they are six as it helps increase the longevity of their careers. Our horses are brought up as herd horses and are left to grow and mature.” Sadrh will go for stallion licensing with the Arab Horse Society. Dominic who is also a trained human and equine assisted psychotherapist uses the horses for his therapy. He said: “As part of the therapy we take people that are both experienced riders and people that have never been near a horse before out onto the hillside to be surrounded by the stallions. It is a wonderful experience and a testament to the stallions’ temperaments.” Reaseheath Futurity entrant, yearling filly, Malala (Mahaala x unknown) earned her 8.50 score for her owner and breeder, Sally Mellor from Lydham in Shropshire. YOUNG HORSE
Words by Laura Pyke
Small Island Breeds Big Talent Two British-bred horses proved that they have what it takes to run with the big boys at the European and World Endurance Championships for Young Horses in the late summer of 2016. Here their owners/ riders share their insights into finding and training a performance horse, and what the future may hold. Georgina Vaughan purchased the 2010 part-bred gelding Vlacq Journeyman (Vlacq Khazad x Vlacq Simbelmyne, by Shah Shadow) as a yearling after seeing some photographs on Facebook. She says, “In the flesh ‘Jonty’ didn’t disappoint; he’s very straight moving and athletic looking, coupled with a loveable temperament. I always look for a youngster with good conformation and straight movement. Keeping a horse on the road is hard enough without starting out with existing problems. They also have to have good bone and be a proper stamp of a horse. Having a bit of pony in them definitely helps with the sure footedness and the quick thinking that is essential in endurance.” Putting your money where your mouth is, so to speak, is always a gamble, and selecting a future competition horse at such a young age tests your commitment to your own priorities. Yes, you can pile all your experience into educating and training a youngster, but you have to believe you are starting with the best blank page you can find. Georgina has been competing in endurance since her teenage years and has years of FEI experience alongside her qualifications as a vet. She goes on, “I was just about to move jobs, head back home to Wales, and move in with my partner (now husband) Stephen. So Jonty’s purchase marked quite a big life change for me. I love bringing on youngsters for the sport. He’s never been the easiest horse as he is full of life and super exuberant. But his trust in Stephen and me is what has enabled us to achieve what we have so far. “As a three year old I took him to the BEF futurity evaluations where he achieved 30
a higher first premium for Endurance, gaining 9’s for his paces. It was good experience for him. I backed him in as a four year old with Stephen leading me out onto the hills, as I didn’t have a school then. He’s always been happy to go out exploring without another horse as we simply have to. And he’s used to the wild ponies now too!” Preparing an endurance horse is about more than simply adequate fitness; a horse’s enthusiasm has to be peaked and channelled appropriately, they must learn to focus, and switch off, as well. Anyone that has worked with youngsters will recognise that sometimes their minds can be on a totally different schedule to their bodies. Good preparation hits the balance between challenging, but not overwhelming, the horse. Georgina goes on: “Being a vet means I work long hours so the horses learn from a young age that when they work, they work hard, with plenty of walk work up hills and strengthening work in the school. They also get plenty of rest; my horses only ever work three or four days a week and get plenty of time off after a ride. I also believe that from a young age they should be conditioned to varied terrain, so they are turned out in hilly fields and spend a lot of time walking over the uneven ground on the mountain. That way they learn to look after themselves and know where they are putting their feet.” “As a five year old Jonty did his Novice season of two 32km rides and two 40km rides, followed by a couple of months off to grow some more. This year he did his two 80km rides at Tilford in March, and Pen Ddol y Gader in May, where he completed 50 miles all by himself in deep mud and pouring rain. He just dug in deep and kept going. It was a hard ride for him, but actually I believe it was the making of him as he suddenly realised what it’s all about. The 80km rides completed his FEI qualifications and upgraded him to Advanced. “He then completed his 1* qualification in July at Euston Park, which he did at 14.47kph coming 12th in the 80km CEI*. He had to cope with a big venue, helicopters landing next to the vetting area, and drones flying over the vetgate. It was nothing like our windy hillside that we train on, but he needs to be exposed to these distractions!” With these solid performances under their belts, and Jonty improving all
the time, Georgina set him one more challenge: The Masters of the Future six year old class, a CEI* 100km, in Brussels, Belgium. This venue will host the Young Horse World Championships for seven year olds in 2017, so the aim was to see how he coped with the extra travelling and the course. It was a tricky urban route and the venue was frenzied but all the British riders there helped each other out. Georgina says: “Jonty was awesome! He finished third at 14.72kph and just took everything in his stride. It was a totally different type of terrain and we all learned a lot from it. He is now having six months off, before coming back into work and hopefully tackling a CEI** 120km ride in Spring next year. If that goes to plan we will be preparing for the Young Horse Championships in August 2017!” It takes confidence to clear thinking to set yourself such goals, especially in a sport where so much of the training is done on your own, just you, the horse and the trail. Nikki Malcolm takes time to explain the journey she embarked upon back in September 2014 that brought her to riding 122km of hills in the South of France in September this year. She says, “I didn’t really want nor need another horse, but there was something niggling at me to bring on a youngster into the sport and aim it for the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2018; simple, right? Well, you have to have goals!” Nikki makes her living backing horses and working with youngsters, from her fabulously well equipped base in Somerset, so the practicalities were never an issue. The challenge was finding the horse that could potentially fulfil her dream. She says, “With limited funds but a wealth of experience and a top team around me, and plenty of proven form behind us, I just had to find the horse and hope it didn’t have a big price tag. I browsed half-heartedly at four and five year olds for sale and nothing really caught my attention until a video came up on a Google search for ‘Arabs for sale’. The video was of the 2009 gelding SG Elegant (SG Spirit of Essteem x Egala by Grandorr) running in an outdoor arena. I could see he was a short coupled, strong type, with obvious attitude as he swung his head around in such a way that could translate as ‘I’m going to be trouble…. But worth it!’ “Having watched the video at least 20 times I was surprised to find myself Official members publication for Endurance GB

YOUNG HORSE
Putting your money where your mouth is, so to speak, is always a gamble, and selecting a future competition horse at such a young age tests your commitment to your own priorities writing an email asking to meet him. I hesitated on the send button but after another glass of wine the message was gone. His breeder Susan George kindly invited me to meet five year old Elegant as well as Egala and SG Spirit of Essteem. It was a big plus to be able to view both parents and assess their conformation and movement too. I took with me my good friend and fantastic endurance rider Christine Yeoman in the hope that she would help keep my heart from taking over my head. She was useless. She fell in love with every horse we saw! To be fair though she really helped me with Elegant’s viewing as he came across much smaller than I expected, almost a bit of a duckling among swans. “His huge amount of bone and hairy feathered legs resembled a hunter type and his head seemed big on his short body. Chris and I talked about how the neck would develop and everything would seem more in proportion once his top line was built. He was in need of a rear end too, but the frame was there perfectly, it just needed the correct muscles and then he too would be a swan. “Elegant hated this assessment process. He didn’t know our voices or faces and yet here we were trying to touch him and move him around in his own stable. 32
I could see in his eye that he didn’t like it; I knew he was a horse that would need ‘his people’. I like these horses, the ones whose trust you have to earn, but they are then forever loyal to you. His highly tuned flight instinct would take some work to channel the right way, but if it could be done he’d be one strong contender for the endurance field.” Nikki is of a similar mind to Georgina on the matter of limbs and functional conformation, saying, “Elegant’s front legs and feet were a perfect pair. That may sound odd but it’s so difficult to find! He had over nine inches of bone, which on an Arabian is a huge amount and, in my opinion, desirable. His chest was wide, plenty of room for heart and lungs, and he had a vibe of self-importance to him despite being extremely green. “I spoke to Susan honestly about my situation, the lack of funds and seeing the quality of horses at the yard it was obvious his price tag would be above my upper limit. She was very fair, saying that she believed that this son of Spirit was the best potential for endurance she had bred. She also knew he wouldn’t be the easiest horse to get going due to his strong character and quirky ways, but believed in me to be the right one to help fulfil her own ambition of Elegant being a success. So, no pressure there then! “The next stage was to ask FEI endurance vet Sarah Coombes to come and see him with me. I’d fallen for the horse but still a small part of me was waiting to be talked out of it. After all, a horse is never a decision to be taken lightly; they are a huge life long responsibility. We watched Elegant move free in the arena and that was Sarah smitten with him too! A free, easy mover with that trade mark head toss and a rear for the finale! He didn’t tolerate much of a vetting and was obviously going to be ‘a bit of a boy’ to back and train. But Sarah knows me very well and she thought we’d be made for each other. She agreed his conformation, bone and feet would be
great assets for the sport, and noticed that as soon as we stopped fussing around him he’d rather greedily tuck into his hay, which was another plus.” With the deal done and Elegant installed at base, Nikki and her partner Nathan set about backing him and bringing him on. Throughout he has had the best of care and the finest of examples to learn from. Nikki’s star horse, Khartoum with a K (Khairho x Drass Lass by Don Carlos), has partnered Elegant throughout training and at his early rides, mentoring the exuberant youngster in the ways of the endurance game. Nikki tells me, “Just 18 months since I first sat on him, Elegant was FEI qualified and completed 120km at the Young Horse World Championships in Negrepelisse, in the south of France. He coped with the journey, the heat, the mass start, and rode like a dream! He finished in 38th place, from 103 starters, from 15 countries. I can’t wait to see what the next 18 months will bring out of him. “The training process and demands on the horse have been carefully calculated throughout his preparation, with regular saddle fits and chiropractic sessions for Elegant as well as vet check ups after every step up in competition and bloods checked for signs that his muscles are coping, that his body is not being put under any stress. So we are two years into the four-year dream of a WEG horse. It’s fair to say it looks achievable but with horses you must enjoy the moment and relish the good days; dream of many more good days, but not expect them to happen; keep focus on the small details and see what happens in the future.” That seems a sound message to close on; that breeders and riders alike should pay attention to the many smaller things that really matter to them, hone them and perfect them, but always with a bigger picture in mind. With such talented young horses and trainers as those above, here’s to the future for British endurance success!

SPONSORSHIP
Working with Sponsors Endurance as a sport, and endurance riders as athletes, are always looking for support and sponsorship, and often not entirely sure how to go about it or how it all works.
S
howjumper and international model Jade Power 22 from Rye, East Sussex was voted from five finalists by the public as the winner of Musto’s Find a Face Competition, launched to find a new rider to represent this world-leading brand. Given the opportunity to interview her, it seemed an ideal way to get a perspective from a different discipline and see how it has all worked for Jade over the past year. Jade kindly took time out of her busy schedule at London’s Olympia Horse Show to speak to me. How did your involvement with Musto begin? I entered the competition that Musto ran last year, to Find The Face of Musto, with the winner becoming a Musto Ambassador. What made you apply? I have always used Musto products, and love them, so it seemed to be the right fit for me. I have to believe in something if I am going to support it, and that works both ways. Musto had to know that I would be promoting their brand, and I already was! What have you given back to Musto over the year that you have been an Ambassador? I have done photo shoots, interviews, been on trade stands, promoted particular items from the range. I have had products on test and written about them. I also have a very high social media profile, Instagram, Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, all these help to keep me in the public eye, and support Musto to support me. I always interact with people who post comments or ask questions. I am a real person, and do my best to help others. Tell me about your riding career I am not from a horsey family, but they have always supported my interest in horses. I learnt to ride at a riding school, and even then I was ambitious. I had great belief that I could become a showjumper, even when my riding instructor told me not to be so ridiculous. Self belief is key to success, because then nothing is out of reach. I used to watch my heroes on TV and think… one day I will be there. It was fantastic when Tim Stockdale presented me with my Musto prize at Olympia last year, as he has always been my role model! I used to watch his Mastercalss videos and learn as much as I could from them. What has the support from Musto helped you to achieve? There has been financial support, as well as equipment and clothing. But really one of the biggest things they have done is shown me Endurance Jan/Feb 2017
that someone else believes in me and thinks it is worthwhile to support me. That means a great deal to me. How many horses have you got in training? At present I have four, but I am hoping to have a new horse early in 2017…we will see! Sadly one of my horses has suffered a couple of setbacks, so will need a bit of time to come right. What are your aims for the future? I want to focus on my younger horses, and I want to work up the levels into International competition…and I have a little ambition to breed my own horse..I would love to be able to use the stallion Big Star…but again we will have to wait and see. What advice would you give other young riders looking for support or sponsorship? Work hard at your sport, always be well presented, always promote yourself, in the press, on social media, make yourself known for good things, help and support others. Then when any opportunity arises, you can already show that you understand how to be a brand ambassador, and that you will be an asset to the company that support you. Why did Musto choose Jade? Picking five finalists from all our entrants was very tough. We pulled together a panel within Musto to help assess who would go forwards, and Jade was one of the lucky ones picked. The thing which stuck out about Jade was her activity on social media, her continuous results and her approachable nature. Jade was always sending us updates of her events, even during the application stage! Ultimately it came down to the public to pick their winner. We have still offered support to each of our finalists, and are proud to offer them some help with their careers. Future for Jade? Jade has been offered another year contract with Musto following a successful 2016 with the brand. Jade recently featured in our Autumn Winter 2017 photoshoot, and will be joining Musto for our ambassador party at BETA International. Jade will also join our newly founded, Musto Academy, which comprises of four of our ambassador who meet to discuss the collections and how we can grow our ranges moving forwards. As part of this, Jade will also continue testing upcoming products, have involvement in developing ranges as well as her other ongoing commitments with the brand. 2017 is a very exciting year for Musto and we are proud to have Jade on the team. 33

Northumberland & Tyneside In December the Northumberland and Tyneside Endurance GB group held their branch Annual General Meeting and awards night. The group’s Chairman, Paul Axcell reported on another successful year for what is one of the smallest EGB branches. Despite some re-routing occasioned by the weather, 5 pleasure/training rides and 2 national rides went ahead. He thanked the ride organisers and committee members and also gave special mention to Katherine Edgeridge who has managed the website for a number of years and Janet Lennard who stores and maintains the group’s equipment as well as playing a major role in sorting out some of the ride routes. The “4 for the North” series of rides had not attracted as many entries this year, after many years of generous sponsorship of the “Cottee Trophy” Viv and Graham Knight of Classic Upholstery and Foam have stepped down. The meeting expressed its appreciation of all they had done for

the group and the trophy series. The series may undergo a “re-vamp” to reflect the current relatively low numbers competing at the higher distances locally at the present time. The meeting also welcomed a new sponsor for this year’s “Urban Horse Trophy”, sales manager Carolyn Hymers who kindly presented the trophy, and expressed their thanks to Gloucester Lodge Farm for sponsoring the new “High Point Trophy” The group enjoyed a Christmas meal prior to the presentations and the guest speaker was Heather Vaulkard, a holistic therapist based at Netherton Park Stables in Stannington. Heather practices a number of human and equine therapies and gave a talk about one in particular, “Equine Touch” giving a fascinating overview of the basics as well as reflecting on how it complements other approaches to horse and rider. A charity raffle was held and the proceeds donated to the Great North Air Ambulance

Heart of England Group - 3 Cs Challenge Cannock Chase on 11 March 2017 New for 2017, Heart of England Group introduces the 3 Cs Challenge. The challenge is based on the Group’s 3 traditional rides:
Centred on Cirencester Park on the beautiful Bathurst Estate, the ride is primarily over bridleways and private tracks and has long been a highly popular keystone of the summer ride calendar. Awards are presented for total distance covered across the three rides for the same horse and rider combinations as follows:
Bronze Award - A total of 80km (PR & GER distance allowed)
Silver Award - A total of 160km (GER & CER distance only) Clent Hills on 9 April 2017 Designated an area of outstanding natural beauty in 1958 because of its beautiful landscape, its wildlife and its history, Cannock Chase is the largest surviving area of lowland heathland in the Midlands. The ride encompasses forest and heathland tracks and bridleways, with no gates and no roadwork and is a lovely early season ride.
Gold Award - A total of 200km (GER & CER distance only)
Platinum Award - As per Gold Award but with completion of the 100km CER at Cirencester Park
As Cirencester Park is a multi day ride distance across the whole ride event will contribute to the award. We look forward to welcoming as many members as possible to our 3 fantastic rides! Cirencester Park on 14, 15 and 16 July 2017 A stunning countryside haven maintained by the National Trust in the heart of the busy Midlands. The ride takes place over the miles of bridleways and easy access trails offering breathtaking panoramic views over the Cotswolds, Shropshire Hills and Welsh borders.
Festive Fun in the Wyre Forest On the 10th December a multitude of Santas and Snowmen descended upon the Wyre Forest for the annual Heart of England Group Festive Fun Ride. 40 riders got into the festive spirit and completed either the 8km or 16km route which both followed completely off road forest tracks around the stunning Wyre Forest. EGB members and non members alike got into theme with excellent fancy dress outfits for horses, riders and even 36
the family dogs! Mince pies and festive rosettes were waiting for all finishing riders and everybody returned with a smile on their face and a little more festive cheer ready for the big day.
