EDITOR’S COMMENT

T

his is a difficult time of year to be producing the Endurance magazine; so many things are about to happen, as I write this, but we have to get the magazine to print on time, so we are just missing out on being able to report on important things like the AGM, and the result of the voting for a new Board, and the exciting news about who is the new National Points Champion, as well as who won what in other categories. If it is a bit frustrating for me, it must surely be the same for the reader! However, there is still plenty to tell you about, and lots of things in store for the winter season! As I write this, I have been reading reports of the great time that people had at Your Horse Live, catching up with friends,

getting some Christmas shopping done, treating themselves and their horses to a few nice things…sounds like it was a really good event! Even if you missed out on attending YHL this year, we have a round up of Christmas gifts and some top end clothing ideas for you to consider, in this issue. Maybe it’s time to treat yourself or someone you know…there are certainly some ideas here! We also have a round up of the last few events of the year; a very positive account of the Riding Club Championships, an interesting and informative account of an investigative trip around Breckland, and a photo report from the European Championships are all included. For those who have been in the sport for a long time, there is an invitation to share your memories

and recollections with “Endurance; The good Old Days” a Facebook page set up by Helen Newton. Helen explains all in her article in this issue. Please keep sending in your reports and photos, they are what make the magazine! I am also interested in hints and tips for saving time and effort with riding and in the yard over the winter, and the things that you love about endurance…start letting the world know why you take part in the sport, and what the benefits are. I hope I will have caught up with many of you at the AGM and Awards Dinner, as we look forward to a new phase in the running of EGB. It just remains for me to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope the coming season brings you all that you could wish for.

VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR

VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR

Endurance OFFICE ADMINISTRATION Olwen Bryer Endurance GB Office, Abbey Park, Stareton, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, CV8 2RP t: 02476 697929 f: 02476 418429

Dear Members, As a result of the resolutions passed at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on Saturday 19th September 2015, Endurance GB has now reduced the Board to 9 Directors with SERC continuing to appoint one Director, giving 10 Board Members in total. The results of the election for the new Board will have been announced at the AGM. I am confident that the new Board will be successful in developing and growing our sport next year and in the years to come. A number of the incumbent Directors have decided not to be nominated for re-election. Jo Claridge has served on the Board for ten consecutive years, being Chairman for three, Vice-Chair for two and also undertaking a wide range of other tasks such as introducing and developing the futurity scheme. Her husband Peter is stepping down after three years having fulfilled the role of Finance Director and Vice-Chair. Jeni Gilbert has spent six years working on, and for a good proportion of that time, chairing the Rides & Rules Committee, whilst also fulfilling other roles such as Company Secretary. Kevin Hawes is retiring after three years, contributing especially to the overall strategy and governance of the organisation. David Hirst has advised considerably on training. I am sure the whole membership will join me in expressing our grateful thanks to all those who are retiring from the Board this year. I hope that they will remain involved in some capacity in the years to come. At this time I think we all spend at least some time reflecting on the successes and lessons of another season as it draws to a close. I do hope that most of you have achieved that which you hoped for at the start of the year – and if not that you can use the winter to regroup and plan a new campaign for 2016. Looking forward to 2016, increased participation in the sport of endurance must be our main focus. I ask you all to look for ways of encouraging riders new to the sport to “give it a go” by speaking positively about the enjoyment we derive from endurance riding and the care that we take to ensure the welfare of our equine companions. Finally, on a personal note, I wish to offer my thanks to all the members of Endurance GB that I have met over the last twelve months who have offered me their support in my role as Chairman. The challenge has been great at times, but then so have the rewards. It only remains for me to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a successful season in 2016.

NEWS

ENDURANCE NEWS 5000 KILOMETRE ENDURANCE MILESTONE REACHED AT BALMORAL Petplan Equine sponsored Scottish Endurance rider, Lorna Hogg, had cause for celebration when together with her long term partner, 19 year old De Marco (Marco), she achieved the 5,000K of endurance competitions milestone. Riding at her last area competition of the season Lorna partnered her 15.2hh Thoroughbred cross Welsh into the Scottish Endurance history books at none other than the Balmoral Estate. Following Marco’s post ride vet check, the pair were officially recognised as having reached this impressive milestone, an achievement which will be recognised with the presentation of the 5,000K Award at the end of year Scottish Endurance Riding Club’s AGM. But on the day, the achievement was celebrated with a special Marco 5,000K cake made by Lorna’s mum! Lorna said: “This was a big day for us – the fact that we achieved this fabulous milestone on the Queen’s estate made it all the more special. The privilege of being able to ride around such a special place and enjoy some of what has to be not just Scotland’s but the world’s most breath-taking scenery cannot be overstated. We were, quite literally, parked on the Queen’s front lawn. The views from the venue and the venue itself were absolutely beautiful, the trees were in full autumn colours and the tops of the hills in the distance were sprinkled with snow.” In congratulating Lorna Petplan Equine marketing executive, Kate Hopkins said: “Lorna has had her ups and downs this year, having sustained an injury at the Golden Horseshoe Ride.

Despite this she has continued to be a fabulous ambassador for both her sport and for Petplan Equine and we are delighted she and Marco have ended the season on such a high note – congratulations to them both!”

YOUNG STOKE RIDER CHOSEN FROM HUNDREDS 15-year old rider Charlotte Chadwick, from Stoke-on-Trent, has been chosen from over 250 applicants to be among 10 Junior Riders around Britain to be sponsored by Harry Hall clothing. Charlotte (right), a pupil at Leek High School, is a keen competitor in endurance riding, and hopes one day to compete at the World Championships. She impressed the Harry Hall team with her enthusiasm for horses, understanding of how they think and work with their rider, and her appreciation of team work. Harry Hall will now supply Charlotte with £600’s worth each of clothing and equipment over the coming year to help her achieve her equestrian ambitions. In return, Charlotte will write blogs for Harry Hall, share news of Harry Hall events with her social media followers and report back on how her Harry Hall clothing is performing.

6

“Harry Hall has been a favourite brand with young riders for decades – a tradition we are proudly continuing with some fantastic new ranges,” says Harry Hall Sales and Marketing Director Rachel Bowles. “So we are delighted to support this team of dedicated young riders, not all of whom own their own pony, as they strive to fulfil their goals.” Charlotte says: “I am over the moon to have been chosen as a Harry Hall Junior Rider. Their clothing is brilliant for on the yard, riding and for casual wear.” Charlotte says her role models are Beth Langley, Beccy Broughton and Tricia Hirst because of their success and the fact they never give up; she hopes one day to compete for her country at the world championships. Find out how Charlotte gets on this year as a Harry Hall Junior Rider, by following Harry Hall’s Facebook page, or visiting www.harryhall.co.uk

In the September/October issue of Endurance we published the photo above, with an incorrect photographer credit. The photo should have been credited to Barbara Austin. Many apologies Barbara.

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Welfare Award 2015, sponsored by Blue Cross, has been presented to Miss Johanna Vardon MBE in recognition of her long-term dedication to saving orphaned foals. Johanna Vardon is the founder and owner of The National Foaling Bank in Shropshire. She provides a nationwide service for horse breeders to pair foster mares with orphaned foals and to provide guidance through the adoption process. Johanna has documented involvement in over 20,000 cases of fostering. Without a doubt equine welfare would have been compromised significantly without the practical support and advice provided by Johanna and her team over many years. The award, which was introduced by BEVA in conjunction with the leading pet charity Blue Cross in 2000, is a formal recognition of significant contributions made by veterinary surgeons and others to horse welfare.

Anne Bowditch 1922 – 2015

Anne “Biddy” Bowditch – Dorocina Stud. Anne always sold her young horses and took great interest in their careers with new owners. Harald Harefoot, was her first homebred Arab to race in her well-known green and red colours, with the green fringe on the front. He won and was placed. Then came Nazzerin - although only small, he had the determination of a lion, he won 6 races and was never unplaced, also the sire of many of her famous endurance stock. Phyzelda won the Marathon at Shadwell, Flittermouze also won at Shadwell, Kazelda came 5th the same year, Flittermouze placed 3rd the following year, Flittermouze also won and placed in Arab racing. Drongo was leased from Brian and Andrea Bolton and sired many endurance horses: Bright Dreamer – top 3 novice endurance one year; Bright Vesper top endurance mare, won at Euston Park 160km; Bright Chance, good endurance horse and many more. Herbie, Emma and James Owen all rode her horses. A great owner who never ever complained and would always come to watch her horses compete and loved to crew them at rides. Annes’s funeral was held at Dorchester Abbey on 15th October

T

his year the British Riding Clubs’ Endurance Final, sponsored by KBIS, took place at the Lion’s Tail Ride on 20th September. A large number of teams from all over the country had successfully completed qualifying rides throughout the season and ten of them contested the final with horses and ponies of all breeds and sizes. This is one event where Arabians are definitely in the minority! The course was run over 41km of rolling Leicestershire countryside made up of grassy headlands, bridleways and very little tarmac. An idyllic route which gave the opportunity for all to experience the thrills of riding in open country and for some faster speeds to be achieved. The competition runs under the standard EGB GER format with the results calculated as a PF ride with 13kph taken as top speed. It is open to all British Riding Club’s members whether they are EGB members or not. In fact most participants are not EGB members when they first enter and it has provided to be an excellent introduction to our sport in a very supportive atmosphere. The three ladies who originally joined me on our Cheshire team are now all enthusiastic EGB members. The only difference from a GER comes at the start of the day with the judging of a Team Presentation Award. Marks are given for handling at the initial vetting and trot-up and also for the overall appearance of the team at the start. 8

Once out on course teams may ride as a group or individually as they choose. Our current team, the Cheshire Challengers, has been together for two seasons now so we, and our horses, are getting used to riding together and dealing with whatever situations arise. We consist of an Arab, an Irish Sport horse and two Connemaras with four riders definitely in the prime of our lives! Our main aim was to enjoy the weekend which we most certainly did. In fact enjoyment seemed to be the objective of all the teams which gave the event a really friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The weather was perfect, the ride organisation excellent, the course superb, the marking faultless and our crew most efficient. Our team achieved an overall speed of just over 14kph and all passed the final vetting with flying colours. We then settled down to endure the wait for results. This is a competition for all with lots of awards to be won. First we were mentioned in the Presentation Award with a commendation going to Joy Toomer with her sparkling Connemara, Ervelough Tomas. The winner of this was the team from Newquay who also won the Novice Award for a team with no EGB members. Congratulations to them. Then the Top Horse Award was won by one of our team horses, Magners Gold, ridden by Jane Wyatt. Not bad for starters but then we sat with bated breath as the scores came in reverse order – and we had won!

THE TOP PLACINGS WERE AS FOLLOWS: 1. East Cheshire Challengers - Pat Guerin, Jane Wyatt, Joy Toomer, Jean Spearing. 2. National Forest – Gillian Hasberry, Mary Holland, Carol Portlock, Susan Durman. 3. Swansea – Kathy Pugh, Sharon Jones, Alison Smale, Jane Berry. Looking at all the results it appears that every team successfully completed by getting at least three horses round sound with respectable heart rates which proves that endurance really is a sport for all. Most of the qualifying rides are 32km so for many riders it was the first time they had tackled the longer distance. To be able to do so in a team atmosphere with all the support that was available from the organisers gave them an ideal opportunity to push themselves and their horses that little bit more. Everyone was very enthusiastic on the day and many brought along family and friends to crew which made for an appreciative crowd at the final presentation ceremony. Our thanks go to KBIS Insurance for their generous sponsorship, to Jane and John Hudson for organising the competition, to Vicky Allen, Chair of Leicestershire and Rutland Bridleways Association for presenting the awards and to all involved with the Lion’s Tail Ride for putting on such an enjoyable and well run event. RIDE REPORTS

Beth Langley wins the British Horse Feeds’ Red Dragon This year’s British Horse Feeds’ Red Dragon festival of endurance was accompanied by beautiful weather and was a resounding success. Experienced endurance rider Beth Langley claimed an emphatic victory in the 160km SpeediBeet Red Dragon on board her seasoned campaigner HS Ametista. Beth, originally from Wales but now based in the Midlands, near Uttoxeter, represented the Welsh contingent as she did at her only previous attempt at the Red Dragon, in 2011. However, this year the team were “much stronger and more experienced” and Beth produced a fabulous performance to win the overall title. HS Ametista or ‘Tissy’ is a 17-year-old grey Arab mare who is “a very small” 14hh. Beth has owned her since she was four and together they have competed at endurance for many years. Last year they competed at WEG where they were placed a very respectable 28th out of 166 competitors. Tissy is now retired from international competition and is saved for one competition per year. Said Beth: “Now I like to keep her feeling fresh and enthusiastic and aim to do well in one big race each year.” That ambition was certainly accomplished at the midWales based Red Dragon, as the pair produced a confident and polished performance to fend off the other 17 starters. Although the weather was warm and dry, thick fog on the Saturday seriously impaired visibility and riders were left unable to see more than 10 metres ahead of them. Competitors set off at 8am on Saturday morning and rode 80km before departing at 7.30am on Sunday to complete the remaining 80km. Beth rode at an average of 14.5km per hour throughout the race and led the entire second day but admitted to getting lost on the final loop and dropping back to third for a short while. Beth explained: “I got a bit lost towards the end, but know Tissy so well and was confident that she had a big energy reserve left so could push on and regain the lead. We ended up going at 21km per hour for the last 10km which is the fastest I think we’ve gone!” British Horse Feeds awarded Beth and also the Little Dragon (80km) winner and the Dragon’s Tail (80km) winner, Lesley Nott, with a year’s supply of feed vouchers for SpeediBeet or Fibre-Beet. Beth was delighted with her prize, especially as she already feeds Speedi-Beet with much success. Said Beth: “I am sponsored by Bailey’s Horse Feeds who highly recommend Speedi-Beet and it is great for making sure your horse is hydrated. I’m very grateful for the generous prize.” Beth thoroughly enjoyed the British Horse Feeds Red Dragon as did many of her fellow competitors. Said Beth “I had a brilliant time and it was a race I really wanted to win so it was fantastic to do so. The terrain was challenging and very hilly but Tissy went so well-I’m chuffed.” The British Horse Feeds’ Best Crew Member Recognition Award went to Jess Minett. Said Event Manager John Hudson: “The British Horse Feeds’ Red Dragon Festival of Endurance was, once again, a huge success. The weather was very much on our side,

resulting in perfect riding conditions for all the competitors, but especially for all those taking part in the Speedi-Beet Red Dragon and the British Horse Feeds’ Little Dragon. “It was good to see competitive finishes in both, with the top places being contested right up to the end of each class. We are so grateful to British Horse Feeds for their continued support of the Festival which seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment.” For more information on Fibre-Beet or Speedi-Beet please contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www. britishhorsefeeds.com. Get On And Ride! Report and photos by Lindsay Robinson

As many of you will have read in previous issues, I’ve been cavorting around the countryside benefitting from EGB Pleasure rides run by various awesome EGB groups that are near to me. Whilst cavorting, I realised that if I liked the rides, then there were a lot of people who owned American Quarter Horses who would also like the rides, but again, the word “Endurance” sometimes scares them. So when my partner in crime Pam Heighton (notice I blame her for a lot of things?!) suggested I travel over to go riding with her at the recently opened Park and Ride at Marston Lodge Estate in Leicestershire in June, I didn’t really take much notice of her saying “it might be a good place for a social ride for Quarter Horses”. That is, I didn’t take much notice until I’d ridden around the estate with her, and then I realised she was completely right. The American Quarter Horse Association UK, the association that promotes the Quarter Horse in the UK runs a scheme where as a member you can log your hours spent hacking, or on pleasure rides, or EGB rides, the hours rack up, and you get awards, with the top award for 1,000 hours being a Silver Belt Buckle. After that ride, which we spent discussing how we could encourage more Quarter Horses to take part in EGB rides, we realised we could have our very own “little ride” to give people a taster of what they would find on an EGB ride and Marston was ideal as it was all off road, and we could run it with very few people. We spoke to the manager of the Estate and explained that we wanted to keep the ride small as we were encouraging people who perhaps had never done a pleasure ride to come out to a new place, get out of the arena and have some sensible friendly fun. Marston were fabulous and very welcoming and on 4th October, with a limit of 20 horses, we welcomed our riders. We may possibly have gone a bit overboard on the prizes, as we had what I called Haulage Rosettes (they were rather large) and sparkly trophies for all riders, as well as free photos for all (well I’m not a professional). Pam was secretary and in charge of Cakes, Carrots and Polos (guess which were for horses and which were for riders), and I was up in the woods with a camera but also reporting back on who was where and amusing myself between groups of horses taking photos of my feet, and my car, and attempting to climb a tree (Cindy says we can’t include my artistic photos of my feet – boo!) The ride was a great success, and Pam in particular was able to speak to quite a few of the riders and point them in the direction of Groups who ran rides in their area and how to contact them and get involved. In addition, we’re hoping to run a couple of other rides in different parts of the countryside, again, limited to around 20 horses, we offer double hours for our Get On And Ride members who attend, and we’re looking at ways where we can contact different Endurance Groups and see whether they would run an AQHA UK class at their Social rides and AQHA UK would provide a Get On And Ride Rosette to complement the ride rosette for AQHA UK members. We think it’s a great way to promote our breed, but also to promote Endurance GB.

In 1991 Ellie Head and I rode a 40-mile (64km) Silver Stirrup Qualifier starting at Bridgham Lane in Harling Forest and riding anti-clockwise around Thetford. There was a halfway vetting at Santon Downham in Thetford Forest, after which we continued via Elveden, Kings Forest and Euston Park, back to the finish at Hepworth. This route has not been used since because of the difficulty in crossing the increasingly busy A11, which effectively split Breckland into two as far as horse riders were concerned. When the second underpass, beneath the newly-dualled A11 west of Thetford, was opened recently I had the idea of doing a Breckland trek based on that SSQ route of over 20 years ago. Aided and abetted by Jane van Lennep – she lent me a horse, transported us to the start and back from the finish – a plan took shape. We decided to do it over two days in September: setting off on Friday from Knettishall Heath Country Park clockwise to Santon Downham where we would take part in the Anglian Distance Riders Little Lodge Weekend. Then on Monday, we would return to Knettishall.

HEADING TOWARDS THE UNDERPASS NEAR THE AMERICAN WAR MEMORIAL ON THE A11

On the Thursday beforehand we towed Jane’s caravan, plus supplies for us and the two horses, to Little Lodge where we set up a coral and base camp. On the way back we stopped off on the B1107 Brandon road to check the exit and crossing from the Mayday Farm side over to Warren Wood, which we knew had not been used by horse riders or anyone else for many years. We found traces of the disused trail, beat back overgrown bracken and branches and hoped we would manage to navigate towards the right exit the next day. We then detoured to the A11 Elveden underpass to check the bridleway gate, which had been chained and padlocked by the Estate earlier in the year – we didn’t want to have to carry bolt croppers. Much to our relief the padlock had been removed. On the Friday morning we picked up our good friend Valerie Withers from the bottom of her drive, on our way to Knettishall Heath Country Park. Valerie would take the box back to hers over the weekend and bring it out again on the Monday to meet us at the end of our trek.

Once tacked up we were on our way soon after 11am, lunch in our bumbags, pockets stuffed with cereal bars for emergencies, and water bottles attached to our saddles. We had estimated this first half of our Brecks circuit to Little Lodge would be about 23 miles, with the shorter half on Monday working out at around 18 miles. The first ten miles to Barrow Clump was over territory that had become familiar to us over the previous 20 years of so of competing in endurance events from various local venues. From Knettishall Heath we followed the Icknield Way and the Rushford Belts to Euston. We passed the gateway to Euston Park, through which we have driven countless times to endurance events ranging from ADR and Iceni Group pleasure rides to the World Endurance Championship. Then along the A1088, over the bridge and round the bend before turning off onto the Icknield Way to D-House. Here we crossed the A134 onto the New Zealand Cottages byway.

ALONG THE NEW BRIDLEWAY We rode the northern edge of Kings Forest alongside wide open sandy fields, with belts of pine trees silhouetted on the skyline. At Barrow Clump we crossed the B1106 and headed west towards the A11. This byway is joined by another from across Shravedell Heath up which I had ridden many years before on a hot summer’s day, competing in a 50mile (80km) ride from the Kings Forest ride venue at West Stow. Our horses were unfazed by the A11 Elveden underpass, having both been through it when they attended the opening last winter. Once on the other side we were in unknown territory. The newly-created and fenced bridleway linking the underpass with the Shakers’ Road makes a dog-leg around Weather Heath. There is not yet any official signage but with the help of the Elveden Estate temporary signs we managed to find the right turn onto the Shakers’ bridleway and headed north on a lovely sandy track across Lakenheath Warren. Before long we were entering Wangford Woods at the southern edge of Thetford Forest, still on the Shakers’ Road, which led us to Mayday Farm where we re-crossed the B1106. Our route across to the B1107 was mainly on a fire route – very hard, slow going – and it was now raining.

BACK TO BASE

FAMILIAR TRACKS

After some dodging and diving through stirrup-high bracken we found the exit and crossed the road. We were now on the last lap, north-eastward across Warren Wood to our base camp at Little Lodge farm near the Little Ouse River. We spend Saturday taking part in ADR’s pleasure ride on a delightful route that had not been ridden for many years – along the banks of the Little Ouse and back around Warren Wood. Sunday the horses had a rest day while we did some checkpoint manning for the second pleasure ride. On Monday morning we set off early hoping to get back to Knettishall before the forecast wet weather set in. The first part, through Santon Downham village, across the river bridge and then the level crossing before zig-zagging through the forest to the A134, was fast. But we then discovered that the verges along the minor road to Croxton Heath were so overgrown with bracken and long grass as to be unusable, so progress was slower than expected. When we reached the Hereward Way byway, we found it churned up with deep, wet ruts for much of its length – it is clearly heavily used by offroaders. So it was more slow going to East Wretham Heath where we crossed the A1075 and headed on to Roudham Heath. The nearer we got to the railway line and the A11 the more unattractive the surroundings became. After the Shadwell railway crossing we had to find a way into the forest, through yet more overgrown bracken. The fire tower on the map turned out to be a radio mast on the ground, and here we turned right, towards the A11 Peddars Way underpass near Roudham.

Once across the railway crossing and into the hamlet of Roudham we were back on familiar tracks again – around the fields to High Bridgham, across the little bridge over the River Thet, and on to Bridgham Lane, the wide sandy track that runs through Harling Forest. Having crossed the busy A1066, we sped up the Riddlesworth School drive, on their nice wide grass verge, then across two fields to the crossing of the Little Ouse. In 1992 this ford was on the route a 50-mile Silver Stirrup Final from Euston Park, which I rode in company with Liz Ellesley and Terry Rowe. The three of us had crossed the river but were then faced with a locked field gate. “Not to worry ladies”, declared Terry, as he dismounted and boldly lifted the gate off it hinges for us to continue on our way. I’ve crossed that river many times since then and it always brings back memories of the redoubtable Terry, a hunting man from Devon. But today it was Jane who gallantly dismounted to push open the little-used and overgrown gate down to the river, which was in flood and as deep as I’ve ever seen it. Undaunted Trizeyah gave a lead to my mount, the very hesitant Tzahra. We were very wet indeed as we rode the last mile along the road to Knettishall. And there in the country park was the welcome sight of Valerie with the lorry, offering feed and water for the horses and hot coffee, biscuits and dry clothes for us. Apart from a couple of dog walkers and distant tractor drivers, we did not see a soul on either of the two days – Breckland is still a remote and lonely place to be – you need to read your map because there is no one around to ask.

RED DRAGON – HOME INTERNATIONAL AND CELTIC CHALLENGE Report By Francis Bakker – Two Day 160Km SERC Rider It had been 8 years since I competed at the Red Dragon and I had been keen to get back. The horse was up to tackling a tough 2-day ride so this was going to be the year. The Home InternationaI and Celtic Challenge were going to be in Wales and at the beginning of the year I put my name forward for the Scottish Team with two possible horses. I was absolutely delighted when Aratahnes Aphrodite got selected to travel down with the squad. My trusty crew Rachel couldn’t make it at the last minute but Judith Allan jumped in on the chance to escape normal life for a week and packed her bags, including knitting, to make the journey to the beautiful mountains of Wales. On the 30th of September all the team members started to trickle into the venue, our squad consisting of: Fiona Kirk – Mr Charles (2-day 160km) Francis Bakker – Aratahnes Aphrodite (2-day 160km) Hazel McCorkindale – Sefra’s Blue Jewel (2-day 120km) Helen More – Mellway Silver Storm (80km) Chris McMillan – Coolagary Glen Thunder (80km) Susan Menelaws – Rocco (2-day 80km) Cheryl Wallace – Lindston Kytrina (2-day 80km) Nicola Hamilton- Magic Storm (2-day 80km) Tessa Kilpatrick – Aratahnes Zeus (junior 2-day 80km) Hazel Kirk – 2Blue (junior 50km) Catriona Rowan – Oronsay of Melfort (40km novice) Anne Short – Sirnunn Golden Snowflake (50km novice horse) Donna Hamilton – Abergavenny Unique Lady (40km novice rider/horse) Lucy Simpson – Tessa of Alltnacailleach (40km novice rider/ horse) This was a strong squad, expertly guided by Fiona Henderson (Chef d’Equipe), Diane Michie (Assistant Chef), Nancy Murdoch (Team Manager), Natalie Loh (Team Vet) and Robyn Dunn (Team Physio). A hectic few days was to follow with route reccying, exercising horses and, of course, on Friday afternoon the team parade and team vetting. All the horses looked immaculate with mane and tail plaits and lots of tartan and Scottish flag ribbons. The whole team passed the initial vetting. Phew, first hurdle taken! The team parade was great; Lucy managed to get her hands on a full ghillie outfit complete with deer saddle and stuffed deer, and she led the parade with her Highland pony. Our team mascots were a highland cow and a real haggis; they were a great laugh and kept everyone entertained!! Saturday morning dawned and we tacked the horses up in

the thick fog and were off to the start. Together with my partner in crime, Rachel Sykes with Nedja du Barthas, we very sensibly decided to go a few minutes behind the mass start as finishing was more important than anything! The fog stayed with us until well after CP1 but then it started to clear up and we could enjoy some of the majestic views over the countryside. Aphrodite was pulling like a train and many swear words passed between her and me in the first loop. The first vetgate went in a blurr; both horses vetted fine and although we were nearly the last ones through, we were riding according to plan at a comfortable 11.5-12kmh. Affie started to settle in the second loop, the continuing descents and ascents made her realise that she could run out of energy! We had very little crewing on this loop with only one crew point about 6km into it. A lovely river about halfway and a water point provided by RD saw us through it though, and it wasn’t long until the last hill towards the vetgate was in sight. Another successful vetting and while I sat down and had egg sandwiches, Judith Allan and Jo McIsaac expertly dealt with Affie. Both Rachel’s and my horses were eating and drinking well and we set out confidently onto the last loop with only

20km to the venue. After a quick, successful vetting we could relax into the overnight vet halt only to do it all over again the next day! Sadly, on the Sunday morning Rachel’s horse failed to get through so Affie and I set off by ourselves in a sort of mass start with the ‘go slow’ group (those who had finished more than an hour after rider number 1 on the first day). I was more confident about the ability of my horse to tackle the first gruelling hill and set off at a good pace. I jumped off and ran half way up the hill but after a wee while it looked as though I was slowing my horse down so I jumped back on and cantered the remaining bit to the top! And what a view!! Such a difference after Saturday’s thick fog! We arrived in the vet gate sooner than expected, vetted quickly but then…… Aphrodite was still looking out for her mate, didn’t settle and wasn’t for eating or drinking anything. We set off slowly on the 2nd loop with 3 apples stuffed in my bumbag to feed her on route. She took a bit of water and food at the first crew point but not nearly enough to get her through. At the river she had a good drink but was really missing her mates (I’m afraid I don’t count in her eyes!) so I stopped for about 10 minutes at the next water point and took her bridle off. She ate some grass and half an apple but then wanted to get on. I nursed her through to the vetgate, walking a lot and feeding her on the go. She didn’t look good though, and just scraped through the vetting. We had 30 minutes until the re-present to get her back on track! She was keen to eat grass this time and luckily there was plenty of it. Jo even managed to get her to do a pee - anybody who knows my horse will know this is a major achievement!! She noticeable perked up and passed the re-present with no bother. Only 20km to go! I decided to set off riding in her headcollar as she doesn’t like to eat with her bit and she still needed to munch her way to the finish line. Steering was a bit hampered but luckily she knew where she was going. In no time I was skipping down the steep hill with Affie trailing behind to find a Scottish manned gate with sloshes and beetwater. A quick stop for a banter and further down the mountain I kept running to CP4 where we had another long crew stop. Only 10 km to go!! I again started running up the first hill but soon gave up when the legs started burning. Affie had regained energy by now though, and was happy to carry me the final stretch. Before we realised we were descending down to Builth Wells and the finish line, with the whole Scottish squad cheering us over. What a ride, what a horse - my Golden Girl! Aratahnes Aphrodite has carried me over 3 160km rides this year, the Golden Horseshoe, the Cairngorm100 and the Red Dragon. Team Turn Out - Scotland 1st Home International- Scotland 2nd Celtic Challenge - Scotland 4th

TESSA KILPATRICK JUNIOR 2 DAY 80KM SERC I agreed to try out for the Scottish team for a laugh so I was a bit dazed when I was told I had made it as one of Scotland’s junior riders for the Red Dragon. Unfortunately the horse I was going to ride (Aratahnes Phoebe) went lame a week before leaving but I was kindly lent Aratahnes Zeus (aka Harry) who found himself bundled into a trailer for the 8 hour journey to Wales. When we arrived I slowly got to know the smiling faces of the Scots. There was only one other junior rider in the team and we hadn’t met before. On my first day there I was wondering who she was when I heard someone shout “Tessa!” I whirled around and there was Fiona Kirk standing behind a bemused looking Hazel, her daughter. “This is Hazel. It’s about time you met”. With that brief introduction Fiona swept out of the stables, leaving us a bit bewildered but we soon struck up a conversation and I knew that, for the rest of the time, we juniors could stick together. Hazel was chosen to do the 50k and I was to do the 2-day 84k but before we could get started the whole team polished their trusty steeds and, with ribbons in the hair of both horses and riders, we all passed our first vetting. Next on the schedule was the parade. I’ve got to admit I never suspected that during my time at the Red Dragon I would be marching around a showground behind a haggis and highland cow with a scotty-dog sticker on one cheek and a flag in my hand, but it was great fun! On Saturday, Harry and I completed our first 42k despite all the mishaps and Hazel finished her 50k in style. Unfortunately Harry tweaked a fetlock so I couldn’t set off on my second day. I was gutted but my team were sympathetic and made sure I didn’t feel the need to break down in tears. That evening everyone in the Scottish team got a rosette but afterwards Hazel and I were dragged to the front to tell everyone about our experience as juniors. This was NOT in the job description but we managed to stammer into the microphone and we fled from the stage as soon as we could, to the applause of our team. Everyone then moved to the buffet and disco to celebrate. Little did I know that I would be dancing to Abba and the Proclaimers until 11pm! I really enjoyed the Red Dragon, getting to know the fantastic people in the team and not having the time to think about school. However if the teachers do ask me for the homework they set, I can pull out my handwritten note (courtesy of Judith) with a flourish that says, “Please excuse Tessa from doing her homework; she has been a bit busy competing for her country” above the TESSA AND HARRY. WINTER FEEDING

RECHARGING THE BATTERIES “ALL INCLUSIVE!” If your horse deserves a holiday, he deserves a fully balanced diet to go with it. For any athlete, the process of training involves putting the body under a certain amount of stress and then allowing it to recover. On a daily basis, for example, muscle and other cells are being damaged and repaired as part of the conditioning and strengthening programme. This highlights the importance of the daily provision of the correct nutritional building blocks, to allow these microscopic repairs to happen quickly and efficiently and with sufficient integrity. Problems occur when diet and training do not adequately support the natural repair and rebuild process before stressing the body again, leading to minor and then, potentially more serious, problems or injuries. So, while a day off or an “easy day” allow recovery during training, a holiday may allow more complete recovery from either evident or less obvious niggles. REPAIR AND REPLENISH Good quality protein is essential in the performance horse’s diet and this means protein which provides a range of amino acids – the building blocks of all proteins, including those which make up body cells and tissues. The body can manufacture some amino acids from dietary components whilst others, it can’t, and these “essential” amino acids must be provided in the diet. Good quality feeds contain these amino acids in appropriate amounts and proportions, provided they are fed according to manufacturers’ guidelines. Vitamins and minerals are not just important in their own right but also because of the influence that their presence, or absence, can have on the body’s ability to utilise other nutrients, including energy and protein. Zinc and manganese, for example, are vital components of enzymes which play an important role in the utilisation and metabolism of carbohydrates and fats 18

so, even though a diet may supply more than enough carbohydrates to fuel performance, if these minerals are in short supply, the horse will not benefit. Vitamins A and D plus minerals, like iron, are stored in the liver, just like energy (calories) is stored as body fat, or as glycogen in the muscles. Whilst we may not want a horse to carry excess levels of body fat, especially when competition fit, nutritional reserves are important to allow the body to recover from exertion and to return to work or competition swiftly. A fully balanced diet should allow this during training, whilst continuing to feed correctly through a period of down time will allow replenishment of depleted reserves. JUST CHUCKED OUT - NOT! If a horse isn’t working and is enjoying 24/7 turnout, it’s tempting to believe that, because his calorie requirements are reduced, he won’t need feeding, especially if the grass looks ok. This puts a lot of faith in the nutritional quality of the grazing and research has shown that modern pasture is likely to be lacking in certain minerals, while protein levels and quality, as well as calorie contribution, are unreliable. The nutritional quality and quantity of grazing will wane as autumn proceeds into winter and it will be a matter of careful monitoring of the individual to assess whether calorie and fibre requirements are being met. Whilst there may be the odd good-doer going into the winter with a few kilos of bodyweight to spare, most endurance horses are unlikely to be carrying more than they need and should ideally be kept this way rather than being allowed to drop weight just because it’s winter. NUTRIENTS WITHOUT CALORIES For a horse who naturally holds his condition pretty well, supplementing grazing with the recommended amount of a good quality balancer will ensure he receives those nutrients likely to be lacking in forage but without the calories

The season has come to an end, so many horses – and riders – will enjoy at least a short break from training and competing but this should not mean taking a break from a nutritious balanced diet. associated with a mix or cube. Balancers provide the necessary quality protein to support muscle tone and tissue repair as well as a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals along with a yeast culture to support fibre digestion. CONDITION CONTROL Horses who are likely to drop condition need to be kept warm as soon as the temperature drops and given supplementary hay or haylage in the field when grass quantity diminishes. The hindgut fermentation of the fibre content of forage produces heat so helps keep the horse warm from within and therefore conserve valuable energy reserves. A specially formulated conditioning feed, given at recommended levels, will then provide the necessary additional digestible calories and supporting nutrients to help maintain condition. For many, field rest is not an option, for a variety of reasons, so winter is often a time for training or, at least, ticking over. Whilst work itself may not be so energydemanding as mid-season, depending on the severity of the weather, the “cold factor” may mean calorie intake still needs to be maintained. When turnout is limited and the indoor life makes life more stressful, feeds which are high in oil and fibre may be preferable as these provide slow release energy and keep starch levels down. The option to “step down” a level from a performance feed to a low to midenergy “leisure” feed may suit some but, whichever feed is chosen, it must be fed at recommended levels to provide a balanced diet with the necessary vitamins and minerals. The alternative is to cut back the amount of a higher energy feed and to add a balancer to bring the levels of protein, vitamins and minerals up without extra calories. This allows the control of energy intake but not at the expense of other essential nutrients as well as avoiding the possible upset of changing the diet completely during the off-season. PICTURES TOP LEFT CLOCKWISE: ALTHOUGH CALORIE REQUIREMENT MAY BE REDUCED, A HORSE LIVING OUT MAY STILL REQUIRE FEEDING; GRAZING MAY NOT OFFER ENOUGH SUSTENANCE; ENSURE HAY IS AVAILABLE IN POOR WEATHER CONDITIONS

RECHARGE NOT RUN DOWN Avoiding extremes so a horse approaches the beginning of their new season in good condition means the focus can be on training and building up strength rather than the loss or gain of significant amounts of body weight and condition. Time off competing should be about recovery and replenishment and recharging batteries rather than running them down. A little care taken with the diet during “down time” could pay dividends, helping your horse maintain optimum performance throughout the season.

TIPS/FACTS • If a horse is likely to get upset by a change of routine, forage or yards, consider feeding a prebiotic to support gut bacteria and help maintain digestive efficiency. • If your forage isn’t good or your horse isn’t a great hay eater, try offering alternatives like, alfalfa, soaked beet pulp or high fibre nuggets, as a “haynet in a bucket”. • Don’t forget to take rugs off fieldkept horses to check their condition regularly. • Hoof takes 9 to 12 months to grow down from the coronet to the toe so what you feed today influences the quality of what you will be riding on next season. • Hindgut bacteria don’t just ferment the fibre content of the diet, they also manufacture B vitamins which the horse can absorb and utilise.

WINTER FEEDING

Winter Survival Dengie senior nutritionist Katie Williams, MSc (Dist), provides some handy advice on keeping our horses healthy throughout the winter months. QUALITY FIBRE IS ESSENTIAL FOR A HEALTHY GUT.

A

nother competition season is over and the nights are drawing in, which means we need to change our horse’s rations. Research has shown that changing the forage source, in particular, increases the risk of colic, so careful management is required. We’re all familiar with the basic rule of feeding that changes to the diet should be made gradually, but how long should this process take and why? The rule is vague because the length of time required to change a horse’s diet really depends on what you are changing to and from. For example, if your horse has been stabled 24/7 and you want to rough him off completely for the winter, it is advisable to make the change between 10 days an two weeks, gradually increasing turnout time from about an hour initially. This is necessary because the horse relies on a population of micro-organisms to digest fibre and, if the amount or type of fibre in the diet suddenly changes, the bacteria are unable to adapt quickly enough and digestive upsets such as loose droppings or colic can occur. Endurance horses are typically fed high-fibre and oil rations, which are less likely to cause digestive upsets compared with cereal-based feeds. As they are so sympathetic to the digestive system, fibre and oil can be used to promote weight gain even for stabled horses that aren’t in work. They also provide slow-release

24

energy, so shouldn’t cause over-excitable behaviour. In a study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Behaviour Science (2014), it was shown that horses fed fibre and oil were less reactive to novel stimuli and had lower resting heart rates compared with those fed a cereal-based feed. This makes fibre and oil the ideal basis for winter rations when horses are in lighter work or might unexpectedly not be exercised. THE RIGHT FORAGE FOR YOUR HORSE If you are lucky enough to keep your horse at grass, you might not have needed to use conserved forages such as hay or haylage over the summer. As the grass quality declines, it is usually necessary to provide additional forage in order to maintain your horse’s condition. For poor doers, the better the quality of forage provided, the greater the contribution it will make to their nutrient and energy requirements, thereby reducing the amount of concentrates needed to maintain body weight and condition. As haylage is more digestible, horses and ponies tend to do better on it, so it is ideal for poor doers. If your horse is a good doer, it is still important to provide alternative sources of forage when grass is in short supply because fibre is important for maintaining regular bowel movements and reducing the risk of colic. In these situations, hay and even straw can be used to provide fibre without too many calories . Whichever conserved forage you use, it is important to introduce it gradually because it will be much less digestible than fresh grass. Suddenly feeding large quantities of indigestible material can result in impaction colic, so small amounts should be introduced and then gradually

increased to allow the horse – and the microbial population in the digestive system – time to adjust. For older horses who might struggle to chew coarser late-cut hays, alternatives are required. Studies have shown that horses with poor dentition consumed less than half the amount of forage as those with normal teeth. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Using a combination of different forages has been shown to provide a more stimulating environment for stabled horses, so, as well as short-chopped fibre, you can give your horse root vegetables such as swede and soaked fibres, including sugar beet or fibre pellets, in a snack ball alongside his hay or haylage. These will all help to keep him occupied and, because they’re fibre sources, they will provide slow-release energy that should help to keep him sensible when you do get the chance to ride. MAKING THE MOST OF WHAT YOU’VE GOT Helping your horse to get more out of the fibre in his ration can help to reduce the need for cereal-based feeds, which is beneficial for health and behaviour. Adding yeast to the diet aids fibre digestion, enabling horses and ponies to get more out of the fibre they consume. Yeast is available as a pure supplement or is also included in many feeds and supplements. BE PREPARED! Whatever this winter throws at us, being prepared is the key to surviving it. If you can use a fibre- and oil-based diet, it doesn’t matter if your horse can’t be ridden for a few days. Making the change early will help to reduce the risk of problems in the middle of winter and make sure you have got plenty of good-quality forage in stock so that you don’t have to change supply halfway through the winter. COACHING

SPOOKBUSTING

COACHING ON THE DARK SIDE Article by Julie Martin

A

s part of West Riding’s effort to introduce different elements of training into our endurance programme it was decided, after the successful Trek training day, to have a ‘Spookbusting’ session. This would be an opportunity to get the horses, and riders, used to a variety of frightening objects. We had a block booking for several Saturday afternoons at Snydale Equestrian Centre and allocated October 17th for this exciting enterprise. West Riding is only a small group so if we get 4 members at one of our training events it is almost 10% of our membership. So far this year we have had a flat work session, working with poles, Trek and fun dressage with between 4 and 8 members attending and the occasional non-member. We usually throw the events open to nonmembers so that they can come along and see that we are not too scary, a little bit mad maybe but not scary. On the day we had 4 members and 1 non-member come along to enjoy the fun. The non-member Vicky had a horse that she is taking to the Lord Mayor’s Parade in London in the New Year and wanted an opportunity to see how he reacted to strange objects and noises. We had the loan of various bits of equipment including tarpaulin, plastic sheets, cones, poles, tickling stick, bushes, wings, wooden bridge, umbrella and most important of all several volunteers to be ‘rent-a-crowd’. A variety of obstacles were set up around the indoor school and the riders were invited to introduce their horses to them in hand for half an hour or so before mounting up. Most of the horses were relatively unimpressed and led well over the bridge, tarpaulin, plastic

26

and under the avenue of poles. The umbrella upset a few and the tickling stick was not readily accepted by all, however progress was made by gentle perseverance. There was a short break whilst the riders tacked up and rent a crowd got ready to go through their paces. At first we stayed behind the barrier of the school singing and banging as the horses went past. There were different reactions varying from ‘I will just pretend these stupid humans are not there’ to ‘oh my god, I can’t possible pass that rabble’. The noise was toned down for the more nervous and once they had accepted it we gradually increased the noise and the movement. I don’t think the West Riding Choir will win any awards and the counting in 10 Men Went to Mow and 10 Green Bottles would have left our accountant wondering if we should be trusted. The poles above the avenue were lowered and various items of clothing and toilet rolls and the horses ridden carefully underneath. Most took no notice at all. A crowd corridor armed with things to wave was set up and the horses ridden down the middle. This started fairly wide and gradually narrowed as the horses got used to the noises and flapping

that was going on. We were very pleased that we eventually got the horses trotting through the crowd in a reasonably calm manner. The whole session lasted around two and half hours and lots of fun and learning was had by all. Our guest non-member was very pleased with the day and hoped that we would be running another one soon, so perhaps we might. I have got lots of ideas for more ‘SPOOKS’.

CAMP WAS BRILLIANT THIS YEAR AND EVERYONE HAD LOTS OF FUN AS WELL AS LEARNING LOADS OF NEW TIPS. Thank you to all of the visitors and helpers for offering their time and expertise. Camp is an invaluable experience and one of the few times young riders can get together in a friendly environment and soak up as much information as they can! If you didn’t attend this year, you should definitely mark space in your diary for 2016. A big well done and thank you to all those young riders who attended: Alicia Reeves Amber Sole Annabelle Lyndon Bella Peel Caitlin Theodorou Ella Bunting Ollie Holman Rachel Judson Tess Wheldon And to Beth Stokes, Lorraine Stokes and Paula Lynam for overseeing the week! We are also very grateful to NAF and Baileys for donating goody bags and prizes for the young riders!

Catching Up ON CAMP! MONDAY MORNING’S ACTIVITY WAS A LESSON WITH HELEN BLAIR IN WHICH OUR FAVORITE PART WAS THE POLE WORK BECAUSE THEY WERE SCATTER POLES, WHICH MEANT WE HAD TO THINK A BIT HARDER! THEN AFTER LUNCH WE MET WITH A SPILLERS NUTRITIONIST WHERE IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO HAVE THE HORSES WEIGHED, WITH THE HELP OF LOTS OF TREATS! SHE THEN GAVE EVERYONE SOME INDIVIDUAL ADVICE ON THEIR HORSES DIET AND HOW TO FEED THEM TO HELP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WITH THEIR WORK. - ELLA AND ANNABELLE -

Tuesday was very helpful for all the riders at camp; Rachel Atkinson visited

and gave each group a lesson in the indoor school. The lesson was based on learning about how to communicate and work as a team just as you would within the EGB squad. After the lesson we were set a task in our groups to

make a dressage routine based around working in pairs. Both of the teams

made very good routines, one used music and one did not. The whole session with Rachel was great! In the evening we were put in our social groups and set an orienteering task, to complete the task you had to work out the anagram. Amber’s team which included both of us won! - Rachel and Tess -

Wednesday morning Jackie Lockett came and did a presentation and demonstration about thermography on one of the horses. After the demonstration we were given a challenge to create an endurance test with movements to do that will help us practice skills for endurance rides. Once we had written it down we then practiced it in our social teams. We then performed it and they chose whose test would be performed on Friday. We went on a ride around the grounds of Onley and then some of us went in the school to do some schooling. We then put our horses back in their corals and grouped together for a talk with Carri-Ann Dark about her endurance career. We asked Carri-Ann and Ann lots of questions about their experiences during the rides as rider and crew and they were really helpful giving us lots of tips and pieces of advice. -Bella and OllieOn Thursday morning Harry Ingram, Nikki Thorne and Andy arrived and we all introduced ourselves, we then proceeded to set up a vet gate in pairs. This was to get everyone to work as a team as quickly as possible teaching both members of the pair how to crew. One member of the pair rode a 7km ride at 10kmph and the other members of the pairs crewed, both in a vet gate and out on course. This worked really well and got everyone working as a team. When arriving back after the 7km we treated it like a vet gate and needed to get into the vet as quickly as possible with a pulse below 64bpm. We received points for the task based on calmness, teamwork, the trot up and presentation time amongst other things. After we had completed the vet gate and sorted the horses we then went and had a very inspirational talk from Nikki Thorne and Andy about Tevis. She helped us with preparation for competing and told us about how she prepared for Tevis. We then went round the room and talked about our goals and what we wanted to achieve in Endurance. Later we also got an interesting talk from the Young Rider team vet Tom. He told us about the importance of electrolytes and how the horses bodily systems work. We all learnt a lot from today and can’t thank the visitors enough for coming and talking to us. -Amber and Lissie28

YOUNG RIDERS

Friday was a lovely last day! We had a bit of fun in the school in the morning with the older riders helping the younger ones. Everyone then took part in an endurance ridden test, which was designed on Wednesday. Each team had designed a different test but one was chosen as the winning test so everyone performed this one. It included practice sloshing, gates, mounting and dismounting as well as trot ups and bending! After this we had our final lunch time together before a prize giving. We had some great prizes and a big thank you must go to NAF and Baileys for their donations! Everyone got a goody bag off both companies and the winning team also received a ÂŁ10 Baileys voucher each. Lorraine, Beth and Paula also received some lovely presents from the riders for their help throughout the week. Most people then packed up and headed home. All in all camp was a fantastic week. We are all VERY grateful to all visitors and helpers for making camp such a fun and fantastic week. Roll on next year! - Caitlin -

South East Group Report

S

o, the 2015 season is over. The South East group have had a fantastic year, putting on a total of 8 national rides, 5 pleasure rides and a spring training weekend. We have sent teams to the Inter Regionals, and the South Coast Tournament and had members of the South East group chosen to represent England at the Home International. Several South East riders were successful at the 50th Anniversary Golden Horseshoe ride, including Sally Toye, Susan Hawes, Trilby Herriott, Gail Jupp, Linda Herriott, Rebecca Northover and Carole Portlock. Sally Toye went on to complete the Cairngorm 100, coming 2nd overall and 2nd best condition with her gutsy little mare Emira Bint Letifa. A small band of merry South East Group riders made the long trip to the Lindum Spirit and had great fun, regardless of success, although several members successfully competed on all 4 days!

Iceni Group BOYTON HALL If you can include this ride as part of your programme for next year please do. Fabulous country that inspired our great pastoral painters in the past provided the most favourable going on grassy headlands, and undulating pasture generously allowed by local farmers. Riders had the opportunity to view some of the formidable hunt jumps on the land owned by the Master of the Essex and Suffolk Hunt, Mr James Buckle. There was hardly any road work. The route and venue did not disappoint the participants in any way and the weather was warm and fine. Event to Event photography captured the beauty of the landscape and one of the outdoor schools at the Equestrian Centre made for a brilliant vetting area. The Iceni group wonders why this amazing ride was not better attended when the facilities and route were so up to the mark. The photograph shows a very happy Carol Chapman, out again ( since breaking her ankle) riding her new young horse Sylvan Illusion. His first pleasure outing ably nannied by Peggy Sofley riding Carol’s other horse Silver Prince Sadiq. One only has to look at the feedback 30

Report by Lindsay Sparrow

As everyone knows with horses, there are ups as well as downs, so we are very much hoping that those horses and riders who sustained injuries over the course of the season, are mending well and we look forward to seeing you out on the circuit next year! Our best healing wishes to Sandy Ralph, Lindsay Sparrow, Jane Cook and our surrogate South East Members, Sam Hunt and Sallie Dudley! So, with winter looming, we have our annual Branch Meeting and Awards Dinner to look forward to, taking place on Saturday 5th December at Tilgate Golf Club. A chance to celebrate the season in style and catch up with everyone too! Congratulations and thanks to everyone who made the 2015 Endurance Season such a memorable one. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2016, from the whole of the South East Group!

that came onto the forum after the event to appreciate the quality of this ride and not just take this participant’s view! Ride Organiser Heather Weston looks forward to seeing you there next season. PILGRIM’S TRAIL Once again the sun shone on the Iceni tribe. The forest was fragrant and the going across the farmland favourable. The ride attracted a good entry of competitors and pleasure riders from far afield to enjoy another Norfolk gem. A few pigs towards the end of the ride

provided a level of entertainment for some but all riders and horses have lived to tell the tale! The pigs had been moved at the last minute, too late for the RO to make any changes. This ride closes the competitive calendar for the Iceni Group and at the time of writing, with a couple of pleasure rides to go, the Committee are busily working on training opportunities and talks to inform and entertain through the winter months. We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces in 2016. TRACY CHILVERS AT PILGRIMS TRAIL

Report from Chris Hull

W

hen the National Trust said that we could have a ride in Clumber Park our embryonic group expected 50 or 60 riders to attend. How wrong we were - Lucy Sheriston volunteered to take the entries little knowing what was to come!! As the ride buzz was passed round on Facebook more and more entries came in – Dave, the husband, started to seriously advise and organised Raynet to steward and a really good catering van – he gets his priorities right. Mick Blakesly planned the route and got his route marking team together – Sarah Appleby, Sheryl Symonds and myself, and still the entries came in – shall we put a cap on the numbers? No said my oracle husband – if it tops 200 then think about it!! 217 booked on – poor Lucy worked very hard and produced rider lists in both numeric and alphabetical order. Saturday morning the marking team marked the 20, 15, 10 and 5-mile routes (we used miles as there were a lot of non endurance non kilometre riders booked) So the route was marked, the ford had its bottom scrubbed of algae and all was ready. Sunday morning – early – Dave and Mick went round putting up the venue and warning signs on the park road – the secretariat Becki Pass, Lucy Sheriston,

Sam White, Sarah Davies and Sheryl Symonds with appropriate lists and bibs (some borrowed from West Riding Group) were ready – the catering van was cooking – we were ready !!! Horsebox after horsebox arrived – the car park was brilliantly managed by Ian (never did find out his last name – but he was brilliant) around 170 vehicles ranging from 15 ton monsters to single horse trailers all parked in neat lines – no one blocked in – perfect. I arrived very early and went out before anyone else to check the route marking was still ok – it was – when I left the venue it had been empty – when I got back it was heaving with horses, vehicles and people. We had western riders, dressage riders, hunting types, real top endurance riders, fast cobs and slow ones – the equine and rider range was amazing. Riders came and went – a lot of happy faces – the weather was brilliant – one or two damp riders at the ford – one loose horse that turned out to have come from elsewhere (not one of ours!!) and so it went on. End of the ride – horses loading, vehicles leaving, people waving as they left – it was going so smoothly – then one lorry and one horse that wouldn’t load plus 3 others waiting for their horse taxi…… The lorry left without the horse that wouldn’t load – he had two others on

board to get home – a temporary home was found for the horse in the local livery stable – the National Trust Coordinator, Joelle Summers, was terrific – she walked with the horse and unhappy owner to show them the way to the livery yard. We found out later that the yard had contacted the local “horse whisperer” who turned out at 9 on a Sunday night with his trailer – loaded the horse and took it and the owner to their stables – money did change hands but not bad for late on a Sunday evening!!! The horse taxi turned up and collected the 3 remaining horses in the last of the daylight and they went home ok. All in all 200 horses and riders round various courses mixing in with bike riders, dog walkers and people out for a stroll – it says quite a lot for the competence and demeanour of our riders that they smiled and rode round and just enjoyed themselves without upsetting other park users.

LOOKING BACK

A

squirrel had set up home in our garden shed enforcing a clear out during which I opened a box full of memories. Amongst the hundreds of rosettes, old letters and photos I discovered a journal I had written, from 1974, which contained a write up about a 25 mile sponsored ride I took part in across Dartmoor on my pony, Jasper. This adventure set me on the path to my long term endurance obsession. Scroll forward 20 years, another pony, Tequila, and I have joined the BHS Long Distance riding group, which became the British Endurance Riding Association (BERA). The Endurance Horse and Pony Society (EHPS) was also very active with slightly different rules, so I joined them as well to increase the amount of rides available to me. The endurance bug had bitten hard. I lived and breathed endurance throughout the 1990’s, following the achievements of top endurance riders through books, magazines and eagerly awaited newsletters, whilst sharing transport with friends to compete locally. In 1996 Tikki and I won our Bronze Buckle, another treasure uncovered in the clearout. Sharing a photo of that Bronze buckle with my chums on Facebook created a wave of nostalgia; bringing back memories of endurance from the early days. In order to satisfy an obvious need the Facebook group ‘Endurance, the good old days’ was born, inviting folk from the early days of endurance to share their photos and memories from pre EGB days. This group page has taken off in a big way and is not only of interest for those who were around at the time, but also for anyone who is interested in the history and development of our sport in this country. Not everyone ‘does’ Facebook, but I would encourage all to join in this special group and wallow in the stories from yesteryear......it wasn’t that long ago! It’s for the achievers, the wannabees and the also rans alike, after all I am sure that I cannot be the only survivor from those times who is still chasing their endurance dreams? 32

ue Seddon, a stay at home mother in her forties, was fed up with always losing her keys in the bottom of her handbag… and I am sure we all know how that feels, or worse, as a rider using a large crew bag, losing our keys at the bottom of that bag, and NEEDING to get them out to access the truck or lorry for kit! Her solution was simple; attach the keys to the inside of her bag with a peg. More or less practical, but not beautiful, and not something that was easy to transfer from bag to bag…pegs have a tendency to fall apart. Six years on, after fighting a long battle from design to manufacture, Sue has marketed an ingenious little gadget, KEASE. A smooth surfaced, pretty, key holder that can be clipped onto a diary, a bag, a belt, whatever you need to use it on. It has two rubbery gripper pads on the holder part, and I have found that I can clip it to the inside of a pocket on a jacket, and even onto my jeans pocket, in order to keep my keys to hand. A really useful item, that I would recommend to riders, dog walkers, shoppers, well, anyone who needs to keep track of their keys, really! There are several pretty designs, so matching with a colour scheme is also possible. An ideal gift or just a useful addition to the kit, priced at £7.99 they are certainly worth the money to take that stress away!

2. ARIAT EXTREME PADDOCK H20 INSULATED BOOTS WWW.ARIAT.COM

riat boots are synonymous with quality, in my experience, and these new boots are no exception. Well designed, with great quality leather and a lot of attention to detail. Despite the fact that as yet we have not experienced extremely cold weather, I have been wearing these boots around the yard and when walking the dogs, in order to try out the highlighted attributes! One of my favourite things about the boot design is the notch for the wearer’s Achilles tendon. So often I find that boots rub on that point, and make the back of my lower leg quite sore. Not with these boots; the cut away notch ensures that pressure on the tendon is avoided, so much more comfortable. In general wear, as with any new boot, these were a bit stiff and unforgiving the first few times out, but they soon softened and became attuned to the shape of my feet, and are now very comfortable. The Thinsulate lining means that they certainly keep my feet cozy, although as I have found with other insulated

boots, it is best to put them on when your feet are warm, then they stay that way; cold feet into the boots take a while to warm up. I test the lace up style, as I prefer boots with laces, I can then adjust the amount of ankle support I am using. The laces on these boots are strong, but easily tied, without the tendency to slip, sometimes found with laces. Good sturdy, comfortable, practical, waterproof boots. I expect these to last for years, as long as I look after them a bit! A wipe over and a bit of polish really does work wonders! In winter, it really is important to look after your feet, and these boots will certainly enable you to do that The Ariat Extreme Paddock H20 is available for women only, in black, sizes 3 – 8.5, RRP £149.99.
