Sports Information Director

In charge of athletic media relations at his alma mater since January of 1989, Doug Ireland coordinates publicity efforts for Northwestern's 14 intercollegiate sports teams through local, regional and national media outlets in print, broadcast, television and the internet. He also serves in the volunteer role of chariman of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, that was once housed in Prather Coliseum at NSU. Ireland assumed that post in April 1991. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men's basketball program that made three straight postseason tournament appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers' Association. In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contributions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university's group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural University Planning Council in 1997-99.

No longer can the Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team describe itself as young or inexperienced. The 2009 version of the Lady Demons is packed with talent and experience and looking forward to teh coming season. “We’ve been claiming to be young for several years,” said 11th year head coach Jimmy Mitchell. “Now, for a change, this year’s team boasts one of the most experienced groups in our program’s history.” The Lady Demons, who finished 99-2 last year with a sixth place finish in the Southland Conference at 4-4-1, returns 16 letterwinners, nine with starting experience and seven seniors. And this year’s squad appears to be ready to run with the best of them. “This is the most fit group we’ve ever had,” said 11th year head coach Jimmy Mitchell. “That’s saying a lot about them and what they did this summer.” “We have a really strong group of girls this year,” said senior defender Chelsea Brozgold, a preseason AllSouthland Conference selection. “We’ve all been going out and working super hard. Our goal is to win conference and win the tournament. Everybody has high hopes and great attitudes about everything.” “We’ve all worked hard this summer and we’re reaping the benefits of it,” said senior goalkeeper Linday Strahan, and preseason All-SLC selection. “It’s really awesome to see our whole team come together. We’re really looking Page 10 • 2009 NSU Lady Demon Soccer Media Guide

forward to the season.” “This year is going to be a really strong group,” said senior defender Caroline Seago. “Everyone is working hard. The freshmen came in in really good shape and everyone is competing hard.” Joining Strahan, Brozgold and Seago as seniors are forwards Maddy Hall and Chelsey Gibbs, midfielder Missey Oakley and defender Lacie Hughes. Sophomore forward Kayla King returns as the team’s top returing scorer after netting four goals with four assists with 12 points last season. Hall and Gibbs each punched in four goals and Strahan posted three shutouts in the net after allowing an average of just 1.14 goals per game.

GoalKeeper “One area of concern for us lies in the goalkeeping position. We return AllSouthland Conference player Lindy Strahan, however, Lindy is coming off of an ACL injury that she suffered in the last regular season game of the year. “The other two returnees in goal are Christian Marks and Sam Furlow who both redshirted in the 2008 season leaving them with virtually no experience in game situations. “Lindy has been working hard to regain her form. She has special talents that can keep you in games if she is healthy. I expect her to round into form fairly quickly, however, it will take a

ness, craftiness and intellect to form a pretty strong tandem at the forward position. “Maddy Hall could be a dominate player in the SLC if she raises her level of fitness. Megan Husson has the athleticism to be a force as a freshman if she is mentally prepared to compete early, and Jeannette Coronel has tremendous technical ability. “This group, I think, could be the strongest group we have ever had at this position, and that is saying a lot Midfield “This area potentially took the hard- since we have had greats such as Erin est hit after the 2008 season with the Hebert, Brittany Cargill and Julie Zavala loss of several key players and starters. to name a few. “I believe that this group, while not “The midfield will return starter having the one individual that might Sarah Sadler and part time starter Haley Cheshier. I am not opposed to moving someone from the midfield or upfront to the back if necessity calls, but I don't think that will happen. “I believe that we will be very strong in the defense and will put a lot of pressure on people not only in defending but also in attacking out of the back.

If they are thrown into action, I feel as if they can do the job for us.” Defender “Defense has traditionally been a area of excellence for the us and this year should be no different. We return three starters in seniors Chelsey Brozgold, Lacie Hughes and Missy Oakley. Heather Burt will redshirt during the ‘09 campaign leaving a spot open for someone to step in and claim. “The most likely candidates are Camerron Mason if she is fit from the beginning and mentally ready to compete, or incoming freshmen Kali Hellinghausen and Jackie Fink. “We have three very experienced players at this position. Jimmy Mitchell

Head Coach Gardner-Webb, 1990 • 11th Season at NSU • 18th Overall In 10 seasons at Northwestern State, Jimmy Mitchell has transformed the Demon soccer program into one that is recognized as a serious threat every year in and out of conference play. Bringing a determined mentality to the field, Mitchell is highly regarded by his coaching peers in the Northwestern State athletic department as well as around the Southland Conference and state. In addition to being looked at for his affable demeanor, he is respected for the achievements of the Northwestern State soccer program under his leadership. “For the young women in the Demon soccer program, and for their families, Jimmy has been a strong and steady figure and an outstanding head coach,” said Demon director of athletics Greg Burke. “He’s been everything we hoped when we hired him in 1999. He’s a friend to everyone in our department and a supporter of all things Northwestern. He is relentless in his efforts to continue improving Demon soccer and his list of achievements speak for themselves.” Mitchell has taken the Demons to three NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure at Northwestern State. This feat makes NSU the only team in Louisiana to earn three NCAA Tournament berths. The first came in 2000 after winning the Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles. Conference tournament titles took the Demons to the postseason in both 2002 and 2005. The 2000 season team that celebrated NSU’s first NCAA tournament appearance also celebrated becoming the only Louisiana team to ever reach the NCAA tournament. That same team also became the first Southland Conference team to win both the regular season and tournament title. With a 15-8 overall record and 10- 2 conference mark, the Demons were defeated in the NCAA tournament by Montana, who went on to beat Washington in the second round. That year, the Demons set Southland Conference records for wins, conference wins, goals (56), and corner kicks in a game (19) and season (129). The 2000 team also set 19 team records and 29 other individual records. Before losing in the NCAA tournament, the Demons won nine consecutive games, matching another school record. They also extended a home winning streak to 13 games, another school mark. The 2000 squad placed five players on the All-SLC first team and four on the AllLouisiana team. Shannon Tenney was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The 2001 season was plagued with injuries to several key players, which caused the Demons to have a losing record for the first time since Michell took over in 1999. In 2002, five first team All-SLC selections again came from the NCAA tournament bound Northwestern State team. The Southland Conference Player of the Year (Katie Priest) and Freshman of the Year (Heather Penico) also came from the Demons. Priest and Penico also represented NSU on the All-Louisiana first team while three other Demons earned honorable mention. After posing a 12-5-5 overall record and taking another Southland Conference tournament title, the 2002 Demons took an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament to College Station to face Texas A&M. Mitchell led the team to a third place SLC finish in 2003 and a second place finish in 2004. The 2004 team also made an appearance in the SLC postseason tournament. Page 12 • 2009 NSU Lady Demon Soccer Media Guide

Coaching Staff • Coaching Staff • Coaching Staff • In 2005, Mitchell steered the Demons to their third Southland Conference tournament title and third trip to the NCAA Tournament. The postseason was a repeat of 2002, travelling to College Station and being defeated by Texas A&M. In 2006, the Demons posted a 9-9-2 record and finished fourth in the SLC. Mitchell's squad bounced back in 2007 with a record of 11-7-2 while playing possibly the toughest schedule in school history. In the 11 wins, the Demons defeated in-state rivals Centenary, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls, Southern, and tied SLC champion McNeese State. Mitchell’s team received public recognition from the NCAA for its perfect APR of 1,000 on the multi-year rate earlier this summer. The NCAA annually recognizes college sports teams from around the country that achieved an APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes’ eligibility and retention for a pre-determined time period. It essentially measures how well institutions, and individual sports, are doing in advancing their student-athletes toward graduation. Before coming to Natchitoches in 1999, Mitchell slated seven years of head coaching experience with a 73-57-3 overall record. Just one year prior to taking the reigns at NSU, Mitchell led his Belmont Abbey team to a 20-4 record and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance. That team was eliminated from the NCAA field by Lynn University which went on to win the national championship that season. Mitchell also served as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte from 1995-1995 when the 49ers were ranked in the nation’s top 10 first-year programs in Division I. While Mitchell can boast numerous team honors, he also has several individual honors on his shelf. He was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002 and Louisiana Coach of the Year those same seasons. In 1998, he was named Coach of the Year for the Carolina-Virginia Athletic Conference after his team swept regular season

and tournament titles and advanced to the brink of the NCAA Final Four. He earned that same honor in 1996 when his Belmont Abbey team posted a 13-8 record, improving from 4-12 in the 2005 season. Mitchell received a contract extension prior to the beginning of the 2007 season. His multi-year deal joins men’s basketball head coach Mike McConathy as the only multi-year contracts in school history. “The high level of performance athletically and academically by our women’s soccer and men’s basketball teams represent the ideal of what we aim for at Northwestern State University,” said Burke. “Mike and Jimmy are extremely dedicated, loyal and passionate about the welfare of their student-athletes, and they’re deserving of this token of appreciation from the university.” The Demon Soccer Complex has also undergone transformation with Mitchell at the helm. Lights were added to the field before the 2004 season and an improved playing surface was laid. New concession facilities and restrooms were added while new leisure areas along the fence of the playing field spruce up the entire complex. A new entrance area with gates is aesthetically pleasing and provides handicap accessibility. With these and other improvements, the Demon Soccer Complex has become one of the premier soccer facilities in the region. The Mitchells have settled in Natchitoches with their beloved Boykin Spaniels, Mattie, Rusty and Sassie. Glenda, who received her doctorate degree in August of 2003, is a teacher at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, an academically accelerated residential high school serving some of the state’s elite young minds. The Mitchells have two sons - Brody, who was born on March 13, 2006 and Cole, who was born April 30, 2008. When he’s not coaching or cheering for other NSU teams, Coach Mitchell enjoys outdoor sports such as fishing and duck hunting.

Myranda Hill

Assistant Coach Tennessee Tech, 2003 • 3rd Season at NSU • 1st since 2004

Myranda Hill returns to Northwestern State after a four-year hiatus as the Lady Demon soccer team's new assistant coach. Hill was a graduate assistant coach in the 2003 and 2004 seasons for the Lady Demons working for Mitchell, who begins his 11th season as head coach next month. She helped coach the Lady Demons to a second place finish in the 2004 season and a combined Southland Conference record of 15-7-2 in her two seasons. “It's very exciting to have Myranda back in Natchitoches and with our soccer program,” said Mitchell. “I feel that she's going to be a perfect fit for our team. She has a great deal of knowledge of the game. Our players will benefit greatly with her presence. “I cannot say enough about what Mike Baker has meant to our program,” said Mitchell. “He has put in countless hours and has been a great coach and also a great friend to many. We will definitely miss him, but at the same time, we are happy for him as he has moved on to be closer to his family.” After leaving NSU after the 2004 season, Hill did an internship with Auburn in 2005 where her duties included the on-campus recruiting of top players, player development, and goalkeeper training. From 2006-2008, Hill was the head coach for the East Texas Spirit club soccer team. A graduate of Tennessee Tech, Hill demonstrated her abilities both on the field and in the classroom as she earned Dean's List honors from 2001-2003. She was also listed in the school's record book for most consecutive games played. In 2002, Hill made an appearance with the Tennessee Tech soccer team in a Northwestern State hosted tournament and earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She was also honored for her efforts during her senior year by being nominated for the Tennessee Tech Female Athlete of the Year award. In the spring of 2003, Hill gained experience coaching the Cookeville United - a U-14 girls club team in Tennessee. She has worked such soccer camps as the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy, The Elite Soccer Academy at Duke and Auburn, Tennessee Tech soccer camps, and local camps in her hometown of Tyler, Texas. A native of Tyler, Texas, Hill attended Robert E. Lee High School where she lettered in soccer and basketball. She played club ball for the 81 Dallas Longhorns and was a member of the Who's Who Among American High School Students. The oldest of five children, Hill earned her bachelor's degree in biology/health science at Tennessee Tech and received her master's degree from NSU in health and human performance with a concentration in sports administration. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&MCorpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State UniversitySan Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, and volleyball.Southland Conference football ranks among the best Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the league joined FCS in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 89 Division I playoff games in 27 years, winning 42 of the contests.

Dr. Randall J. Webb Northwestern State President

Dr. Randall J. Webb never misses a chance to tell people about the good things happening at Northwestern State University. And Webb has been responsible to many of those accomplishments. Webb became NSU's'17th president in July 1996 and is the second-longest serving president in the university's 125-year history. During Webb's tenure, enrollment exceeded 10,000 students for the first time, peaking at 10,505 students in the fall of 2004. The university also set records for total graduates in an academic year. With the implementation of selective admissions in the fall of 2005, the academic preparation of freshmen students has increased considerably. Overall enrollment initially decreased after the implementation of selective admissions, but has begun to increase again. Northwestern has improved its academic programs while attracting better-prepared students. The average ACT score of students has risen under Webb's tenure, and student leaders are choosing NSU in large numbers. The university has dramatically increased the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen. While Webb has been president, Northwestern has increased the level of active external grant and contract funding from federal, state and private sources to approximately $20,000,000 annually. The university raised more than $34 million from alumni, friends, supporters, and private industry in its first-ever capital campaign, which exceeded its $18.84 million goal by more than $15 million. A new capital campaign, in honor of Northwestern's 125th anniversary, is now underway. The university has received donations or pledges for its first three $1 million endowed chairs. Northwestern also has 34 endowed professorships worth $100,000 each. NSU has also moved boldly to deliver instruction to students wherever they are. Under Webb, the university has become a state and regional leader in bringing classes to students by compressed video and the Internet. The university offers over twenty degree programs via the Internet and is looking to add more programs in the future. More than half of the students at Northwestern take an electronic class. Under Webb, the university has modernized and improved its facilities. A $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation, and Activity Center was completed in the center of the campus on the site of the old Intramural Building. Projects to renovate Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building and Williamson Hall were also completed. West Caspari Hall was demolished and funding has been received to reconstruct West Caspari as a three-story, one-stop center for student services. Plans call for renovating East Caspari Hall in the future. Northwestern has also built University Place Phases I and II, providing on-campus students with modern residence facilities that best meet their needs. Additional projects include replacement of the entire underground electrical distribution system and the steam distribution system and the improvement of drainage and replacement of the turf at Turpin Stadium. A one-time walk-on center for the Northwestern football team as an undergraduate, Webb has been one of the most avid supporters of the university's athletic programs. Since returning to the Northwestern campus in 1989, Webb has been active as a donor and volunteer. In 1994, he oversaw a successful Northwestern Athletic Association board of directors and served on the NSU Athletic Council. In 19951996, Webb was in charge of the Athletic Integrity Subcommittee for the university's NCAA Certification Self-Study. He served on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the prestigious and powerful NCAA Executive Council, which oversees all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. The Board of Directors enacted major academic reforms during his tenure. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research. Webb was a member of the faculty at Longwood College in Farmville, Va., from 1966 until 1974. From 1974 until 1976, he was the director of Higher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education. In 1976, Webb moved to Southeastern Louisiana University where he served as director of institutional research and EEO officer from 1976 until 1983 and as

registrar and a part-time faculty member in mathematics from 1983 until 1989. Webb returned to NSU in 1989 as dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies and professor of mathematics. In that position, he exercised campus-wide responsibility for policy development, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb was in that role, graduate enrollment increased by 35 percent and internal funding for faculty research increased by 200 percent. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU's successful Freshman Connection Program. Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwestern. Tamara and her husband, former Demon All-American pitcher Reggie Gatewood, are the parents of two children: Tyler and Ava. Lauren is married to former Demon baseball player Nick Simokatis, and they have two sons: Nicholas and Benjamin.

Jerry Pierce

Vice President/External Affairs

Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 45th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indeli-

ble. He begins his 20th year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member of USTA teams that have won more than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and one national championship. NSU Athletic Council Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce had already served his alma mater, adopted hometown and state with John Ackel distinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees university operJody Biscoe (chair) ations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media relaDion Boyett Dusty Dischler (student) tions and assists President Dr. Randall J. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the TimesPicayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson. His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later. That same year, Burke also broke new ground by generating private backing for the first longterm guaranteed coaching contract in school history for McConathy. Women's soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell has taken three teams to the NCAA playoffs, making NSU the only Louisiana university to have multiple appearances. Dramatic facility enhancements have occurred in his eight seasons and Mitchell has been rewarded with a multi-year contract. Burke also picked head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Florida, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Wichita State. He recently landed LSU co-defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto to be the Demons' new football coach. Peveto and his staff promptly signed a 2009 recruiting class ranked No. 1 nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision by Rivals.com recruiting analysts. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. 2004-06. Under legendary coach Yvette Girouard, Castle compiled a long list of accolades, including being on the 2006 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List as she served as the Lady Tigers' team captain. She graduated from LSU in May 2007. She has worked in administrative roles with two insurance firms while also working at a drilling company near her hometown of Lafayette. Castle's winning personality and her strong organizational and time management skills have been showcased in her new position, along with her ability to adapt to the constant challenges in managing athletic facilities for a wide range of events. She has assumed the title of assistant director of game operations for NSU athletics, using her ability to interact effectively with visiting coaches, game officials, fans, and NSU staff and coaches to great benefit to enhance the home game experience at Northwestern. Last April, Castle, an outfielder and designated player at LSU, was named to the 12woman All-Lady Tiger Park Team as LSU celebrated its final season playing in that facility. A three-year letterwinner after transferring from UL-Lafayette, Castle earned Easton AllAmerica honors in 2004, 2005, and 2006. A two-time NFCA All-South Region selection, the Lafayette native led the Tigers in walks as a senior with the second most in school history and only one shy of the school record. She concluded her career ranked in the top 10 in LSU history in batting average, on base percentage, walks, hits, triples and run scored. She helped LSU reach the 2004 Women's College World Series. Castle was born Dec. 30, 1983 and is the daughter of Beth and Prent Castle. She has two brothers, Chip and Walter. She was twice the Louisiana Class 5A player of the year while starring at Comeaux High in Lafayette.

Carrie Crowell Assistant Academic Advisor

Carrie Crowell, a two-year Academic All-Southland Conference soccer standout for Northwestern State in 2005-06, has been named an academic coordinator in the Johnnie Emmons Athletic Study Center at NSU. Crowell had served as an intern in the Academic Services and CHAMPS/Life Skills program since January while also completing her second season as a graduate assistant soccer coach and finishing work on her master's of science in sport administration. She was a magna cum laude graduate of NSU in August 2007 in business administration, and also was a key contributor on the Lady Demons' 2005 NCAA Tournament team that won the Southland Conference Tournament. Crowell joins academic coordinator and senior woman administrator Jodie Heinicka as the full-time staff serving almost 350 student-athletes at NSU.
