Ireland has won numerous awards as SID from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He was recently awarded the Distinguished American Award by the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Several of his assistant SIDs and graduate assistants have advanced to prominence in media fields. Former NSU sports information staffers under Ireland include Bruce Ludlow, assistant commissioner of the Southland Conference for media relations; Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Mike Morrison, co-editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and business manager at Lamar; Erik Cox, SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud, former assistant SID at LSU; Kenny Lannou, SID at Kansas State; and Troy Mitchell, SID at Henderson State. Dustin Eubanks, NSU's director of NCAA compliance, worked in the NSU SID office as a graduate assistant and for two years as the fulltime assistant. And Adam Jonson, NSU’s ticket manager, was a student and graduate assistant in the SID office. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men's basketball program that made three straight postseason tournament appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers' Association. In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contributions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university's group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural University Planning Council in 1997-99. A member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a student government senator while completing a journalism degree from Northwestern, Ireland was editor of the student newspaper "Current Sauce" as a sophomore before going to work for the Shreveport Times. Season Outlook
Lady Demons look to bounce back for successful ‘10 campaign The 2009 season for the Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team didn’t pan out like it wanted to as the team missed out on the Southland Conference tournament for the first time since 2001 and just the third time in school history. Things started out well for NSU as it carried a 5-0 record to start the season and posted seven wins in its first nine games. That type of success bolted the Lady Demons into its first national ranking when it was listed in the Top 60 by TopDrawerSoccer.com. But then injuries began to take their toll and the Lady Demon season began a downward spiral. NSU dropped four straight games, including three one-goal losses, and started the conference season 1-4, also with three one-goal defeats. But despite the gloom of the losing streak the Lady Demons continued to fight forward and won three of their last four games, including a 1-0 win over SLC tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana. And despite missing out on the league tournament -NSU tied for the sixth and final spot but missed out by the points tiebreaker -- NSU’s 11-9 record tied for the most wins in a season since 2007. Fast forward to 2010. NSU has a different look to its team. There are 14 new faces to go along with 14 letterwinners. Of those fresh faces, 13 are true freshmen and one redshirt freshman as several will be counted on to make an immediate impact for the Lady Demons. “We are excited about our freshman class and feel that there will be several that will make immediate contributions, said 12th year head coach Jimmy Mitchell. The Lady Demons return eight players that saw a significant amount of starts last season, including junior forward Kayla King who is one of the team’s top returning scorers. Last season, King tied for third on the squad with four goals and was second on the team with 31 shots. Joining King as one of the top returing scorers will be senior midfielder Sarah Sadler, who had four goals with an assist and 26 shots, as well as sophomore defender Melodie Johnson (4 goals, 3 assists, 9 points). Also returning and looking to make an impact this season will be junior midfielder Rachel O’Steen. O’Steen, an all-conference selection last year, started in 19 games and led the Lady Demons with nine assists. Meanwhile senior forward Meghan Hunter will be in the mix as one of the leaders on the team as well. Hunter started in 18 of the 20 games played, scored three goals and had two assists. The Lady Demons will get the services back from senior defender Heather Burt who missed 2009 season. “Our returners are hungry for success, said Mitchell whose team is the only school in the state to qualify for three NCAA Tournaments. “They all have tremendous work ethic and are quality people. 10
GOALKEEPER This will be one area of concern for the Lady Demons as for the first time in a while, the squad will not be returning an all-conference player in the net. However, NSU will have the services of sophomore Christian Marks and sophomore Sam Furlow, both of who gained valuable experience over the past couple of seasons. Furlow is the front-runner to start in the net and had a very impressive spring season. Marks missed spring training due to a medical issue. Freshman Jessica Danku will make a push for some playing time as well. Danku has great height (6-foot tall) and distribution skills but needs to learn the speed of the college game. DEFENDER Defense has traditionally been an area of excellence for the Lady Demons throughout the years, and even though the defense was hit with huge holes to fill with the loss of three starters to graduation, the 2010 season is expected to be strong. Burt, a two-year starter before missing the 2009 season, returns as well as sophomore starter Kali Hellinghausen. Junior Camerron Mason saw some starting time in 2009 and is expected to take on a larger role this season. The defensive position will look to several freshmen to challenge the returners as Jade Theriot, Ashlea Marler and Danielle Harding all have great speed and quickness and will be expected

Season Outlook candidate to anchor the area while freshmen Taylor Mulnix, Cassidy Browning and Rebecca Furlow will look to be in the mix. “Our midfield is going to be a work in progress, said Mitchell. “We have a lot of talent at this position but we have to find the right mix of players that will give us the best look on the field. I believe that with our work rate, we will put tremendous pressure on opposing teams. I think our midfield could be one of the better area in our program’s history.
to see a significant amount of playing time. “After limping through several injuries last year, we were forced to play some of our younger players a lot of minutes,â€? said Mitchell. “I feel this will pay off for us this season. Mason, Burt and Hellinghausen are a very solid back three. I also think our freshmen will push each day for playing time and could find themselves in the starting rotation early on.â€? MIDFIELD This is the area that possesses the most experience for NSU. With the return of Sadler and O’Steen, the Lady Demons will rarely be outworked. Johnson has the ability to score and create goals from the midfield and is expected to to contend for a starting spot. Haley Cheshier had a good summer and returned in good shape and will see a lot of playing time. Sophomore Theressa Halle found a home at the midfield position during spring drills and has been very effective in the defensive role at midfield. Redshirt freshman Pippi Haase adds flair to the spot while true freshmen Shannon Danku and Katy Gominger will bring a load of talent to the spot. The outside midfield spot will provide an interesting slate of competition. Sophomore Marissa Lees is the leading Great Tradition • Brighter Future SLC Champions - 2000
FORWARD The forward position will be anchored by returner King who is explosive and can score while creating scoring chances. Hunter will be coming back from an ACL surgery and is progressing in her rehab to make a return for 2010. “Meghan getting hurt in the spring was a huge blow for our team, and she’ll be missed early on, said Mitchell. Jeanette Coronel, Ashlee Savona, Yanci Johnson, Alexandria Jackson, and Haley Altenburg will be vying for a starting spot. Coronel, who comes in as a sophomore, has great technical ability as well as the freshman Savona, who has great technical ability, good vision and quickness. Johnson, who is a Natchitoches native, has tremendous quickness and superior work ethics while Jackson has tremendous athleticism. Altenburg has shown the ability to be a pure goal scorer. 2010 SCHEDULE The 2010 schedule is a daunting one for the Lady Demons and perhaps the best in the program’s history in terms of the quality of the home opponents. Things get started on Friday, Aug. 20 when the Lady Demons visit Tulsa followed by a Sunday match against Oral Roberts. NSU opens its home season on Aug. 27 when it host Big 12 member Texas Tech. That will be followed by an Aug. 29 matchup against Southern to help kickstart a string of seven straight home games. NSU will host Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 3 and TCU on Sept. 5, then will host Louisiana-Monroe (Sept. 10), Prairie View (Sept. 12), and Jackson State (Sept. 17) to close out the 3-week homestand.
The Lady Demons will open Southland Conference play on Oct. 1 at home against Stephen F. Austin followed by an Oct. 3 home match against Sam Houston State. Other home SLC matches include: Lamar (Oct. 22) and McNeese State (Oct. 24). PRESEASON POLLS Northwestern State has been tabbed for a sixth place finish by the Southland Conference league coaches and a seventh place finish by league sports information directors in the preseason polls released by the conference office on Tuesday. Texas State, last year's regular season champion, was selected to repeat in both polls while last year's tournament champion, Southeastern Louisiana, was picked second in the coaches poll and third by the SIDs. Stephen F. Austin was picked second by the SIDs and third by the coaches. Texas-San Antonio, Sam Houston State, NSU, McNeese State, Lamar, Central Arkansas, and Nicholls round out the preseason polls.

Jimmy Mitchell Head Coach Gardner-Webb, 1990 • 12th Season at NSU • 19th Overall In 11 seasons at Northwestern State, Jimmy Mitchell has transformed the Demon soccer program into one that is recognized as a serious threat every year in and out of conference play. Bringing a determined mentality to the field, Mitchell is highly regarded by his coaching peers in the Northwestern State athletic department as well as around the Southland Conference and state. In addition to being looked at for his affable demeanor, he is respected for the achievements of the Northwestern State soccer program under his leadership. “For the young women in the Demon soccer program, and for their families, Jimmy has been a strong and steady figure and an outstanding head coach,â€? said Demon director of athletics Greg Burke. “He’s been everything we hoped when we hired him in 1999. He’s a friend to everyone in our department and a supporter of all things Northwestern. He is relentless in his efforts to continue improving Demon soccer and his list of achievements speak for themselves.â€? Mitchell has taken the Demons to three NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure at Northwestern State. This feat makes NSU the only team in Louisiana to earn three NCAA Tournament berths. The first came in 2000 after winning the Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles. Conference tournament titles took the Demons to the postseason in both 2002 and 2005. The 2000 season team that celebrated NSU’s first NCAA tournament appearance also celebrated becoming the only Louisiana team to ever reach the NCAA tournament. That same team also became the first Southland Conference team to win both the regular season and tournament title. With a 15-8 overall record and 10- 2 conference mark, the Demons were defeated in the NCAA tournament by Montana, who went on to beat Washington in the second round. That year, the Demons set Southland Conference records for wins, conference wins, goals (56), and corner kicks in a game (19) and season (129). The 2000 team also set 19 team records and 29 other individual records. Before losing in the NCAA tournament, the Demons won nine consecutive games, matching another school record. They also extended a home winning streak to 13 games, another school mark. 12
The 2000 squad placed five players on the All-SLC first team and four on the All-Louisiana team. Shannon Tenney was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The 2001 season was plagued with injuries to several key players, which caused the Demons to have a losing record for the first time since Michell took over in 1999. In 2002, five first team All-SLC selections again came from the NCAA tournament bound Northwestern State team. The Southland Conference Player of the Year (Katie Priest) and Freshman of the Year (Heather Penico) also came from the Demons. Priest and Penico also represented NSU on the AllLouisiana first team while three other Demons earned honorable mention. After posing a 12-5-5 overall record and taking another Southland Conference tournament title, the 2002 Demons took an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament to College Station to face Texas A&M. Mitchell led the team to a third place SLC finish in 2003 and a second place finish in 2004. The 2004 team also made an appearance in the SLC postseason tournament. In 2005, Mitchell steered the Demons to their third Southland Conference tournament title and third trip to the NCAA Tournament. The postseason was a repeat of 2002, travelling to College Station and being defeated by Texas A&M. In 2006, the Demons posted a 9-9-2 record and finished fourth in the SLC. Mitchell's squad bounced back in 2007 with

Coaching Staff a record of 11-7-2 while playing possibly the toughest schedule in school history. In the 11 wins, the Demons defeated instate rivals Centenary, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls, Southern, and tied SLC champion McNeese State. Mitchell’s team received public recognition from the NCAA for its perfect APR of 1,000 on the multi-year rate in 2004 and 2006 and was well above the national average for the 2008-09 year. The NCAA annually recognizes college sports teams from around the country that achieved an APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes’ eligibility and retention for a pre-determined time period. It essentially measures how well institutions, and individual sports, are doing in advancing their student-athletes toward graduation. Before coming to Natchitoches in 1999, Mitchell slated seven years of head coaching experience with a 73-57-3 overall record. Just one year prior to taking the reigns at NSU, Mitchell led his Belmont Abbey team to a 20-4 record and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance. That team was eliminated from the NCAA field by Lynn University which went on to win the national championship that season. Mitchell also served as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte from 1995-1995 when the 49ers were ranked in the nation’s top 10 first-year programs in Division I. While Mitchell can boast numerous team honors, he also has several individual honors on his shelf. He was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002 and Louisiana Coach of the Year those same seasons. In 1998, he was named Coach of the Year for the CarolinaVirginia Athletic Conference after his team swept regular sea-
son and tournament Mitchell’s Head Coaching Records titles and advanced Year School Record to the brink of the 1991 Gardner-Webb 4-12 NCAA Final Four. 1992 Gardner-Webb 12-6-1 He earned that 1993 Gardner-Webb 7-8-2 same honor in 1996 1995 Belmont Abbey 4-12 when his Belmont 1996 Belmont Abbey 13-8 Abbey team posted 1997 Belmont Abbey 13-7 20-4 a 13-8 record, 1998 Belmont Abbey 9-8-2 improving from 4-12 1999 Northwestern State 15-8 in the 2005 season. 2000 Northwestern State 2001 Northwestern State 6-9-2 Mitchell received 12-6-5 a contract extension 2002 Northwestern State 2003 Northwestern State 9-9-2 prior to the begin2004 Northwestern State 11-11-0 ning of the 2007 2005 Northwestern State 13-6-1 season. His multi- 2006 Northwestern State 9-9-2 year deal joins 2007 Northwestern State 11-7-2 men’s basketball 2008 Northwestern State 9-9-2 head coach Mike 2009 Northwestern State 11-9 188-148-21 McConathy as the Totals 18 years only multi-year contracts in school history. “The high level of performance athletically and academically by our women’s soccer and men’s basketball teams represent the ideal of what we aim for at Northwestern State University, said Burke. “Mike and Jimmy are extremely dedicated, loyal and passionate about the welfare of their studentathletes, and they’re deserving of this token of appreciation from the university. The Demon Soccer Complex has also undergone transformation with Mitchell at the helm. Lights were added to the field before the 2004 season and an improved playing surface was laid. New concession facilities and restrooms were added while new leisure areas along the fence of the playing field spruce up the entire complex. A new entrance area with gates is aesthetically pleasing and provides handicap accessibility. And the latest addition was the construction of a two-level, air conditioned press box. With these and other improvements, the Demon Soccer Complex has become one of the premier soccer facilities in the region. The Mitchells have settled in Natchitoches with their beloved Boykin Spaniels, Mattie, Rusty and Sassie. Glenda, who received her doctorate degree in August of 2003, is a teacher at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, an academically accelerated residential high school serving some of the state’s elite young minds. The Mitchells have two sons - Brody, who was born on March 13, 2006 and Cole, who was born April 30, 2008. When he’s not coaching or cheering for other NSU teams, Coach Mitchell enjoys outdoor sports such as fishing and duck hunting.

The 2000 Lady Demon soccer squad became the first team to capture the SLC regular season and tournament titles in the same year The 2000 season was a historic one for the Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team. In addition to setting school records with 15 wins and 10 Southland Conference victories, the Lady Demons won nine straight games to capture their first Southland Conference regular season title and became the first SLC team to then go on to win the conference tournament title. With their second tournament title in four years, the Lady Demons earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Montana, 6-0, in a tournament play-in game. NSU set school records and led the league in goals scored with 56, assists with 37 and points scored with 150 in the 2000 season. To back up that firepower, NSU allowed just 37 goals with a school record 10 shutouts. League play is where the Lady Demons really stepped it up. NSU set a conference record with 30 goals while allowing only eight goals in 12 games with eight shutouts. After losses to Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana on the road, NSU bounced back to win seven straight regular season league games to capture its first regular season league title, followed by a 2-0 mark in the conference tournament. In the league tournament, which NSU hosted, the Lady Demons defeated McNeese State (4-2) and Southeastern Louisiana (1-0) to become the first conference team to win multiple tournament titles. NSU won the inaugural SLC tournament in 1997 after defeating Southeastern Louisiana by a 2-0 count.

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State UniversitySan Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, and volleyball.Southland Conference football ranks among the best Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the league joined FCS in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 89 Division I playoff games in 27 years, winning 42 of the contests.

University Administration Dr. Randall J. Webb Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State University’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after more than 14 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal. Under his leadership, Northwestern became the first public college or university in Louisiana to achieve 100 percent national accreditation of all eligible academic programs. Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as president and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004. Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the university toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater academic potential and aptitude. Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the university. External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its founding in 1884. Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video. Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East and West Caspari Halls, and replace the underground electrical distribution system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from NSU in 1966. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church. Jerry Pierce Vice President/External Affairs Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 46th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible. He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958. He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him to step aside from the volunteer post. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson. His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later. Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana's higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the Journalism Department faculty. Jody Biscoe Faculty Athletic Representative Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties. NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference. Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration. Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center's (ATTC) - Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recognized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee. This past year, Jody was selected to serve on the United States Health and Human Services – Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration Expert Panel concerning workforce issues. Jody's wife, Veronica (Roni), is an avid runner. Their 16-year-old daughter, Roxy, is a junior on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary's High School. All are devoted Demon fans!
Dr. William Broussard Executive Director - NSU Athletic Association Associate AD for External Relations One of the most accomplished student-athletes ever at Northwestern State, two-time football All-America center William Broussard returned to his alma mater in February 2007 as the Director of External Relations, coordinating fundraising activities through the Athletic Association and Demon Victory Fund. Known for his avid and tireless promotion of NSU Athletics, Broussard has represented the department as Associate Athletic Director of External Relations since 2007 and planned or helped organize hundreds of events to promote Demon Athletics. After re-branding the annual fund campaign the Demon Victory Fund (DVF) in 2007, the DVF enjoyed its most successful year up to that point. The 2008-09 DVF once again broke the annual record for total revenues, number of Athletic Association members, and Select 100 Members on the way to establishing a new benchmark for annual, unrestricted support of the NSU Athletic Department. Under Broussard’s guidance, the NSU Athletic Association has set four consecutive annual total attainment records, secured the largest scholarship endowment and largest planned gift in the history of NSU Athletics. In the 2009-10 year, the NSU Athletic Association established or tied several annual records under Broussard’s guidance, including annual records for total operating revenues, gift-in-kind donations, number of commitments to the Endowed Scholarship Program (9), and number of Select 100 members (197). Broussard also assisted in raising more than $100,000 in support for renovations to the Athletic Field House. Broussard represents Northwestern State as the Southland Conference representative of the National Association of Athletic Directors of Development (NAADD) and is also an Assistant Professor of Journalism at NSU. He is the author of essays and articles on the culture of college athletics and writes a bi-weekly sports editorial for local news magazine The Real Views. He is also the 2010 president of the Natchitoches Lions Club. Broussard is a 2000 graduate, with distinction, of the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University and a 2007 graduate of the University of Arizona, with his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition. A native of Crowley, he is married to the former Kendra Peters, a Lady Demon volleyball player during the couple’s days at Northwestern.
