The oldest institution in the University of Louisiana System, Northwestern State University has a long tradition of academic excellence in a student-centered environment.

Founded in 1884 as the State Normal School, Northwestern was originally dedicated to the education of teachers. Northwestern gradually added programs to meet the needs of the people of Louisiana. Today, NSU offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Northwestern has nationally-recognized programs in computer information systems, creative and performing arts, nursing, educational technology and industrial technology. The university has put an emphasis on incorporating technology in the classroom, working to provide students with technology that is applicable to the workplace. Northwestern is also home to the Louisiana Scholars' College, the state's designated honors program in the arts and sciences.

The university is also preparing for changes in higher education by aggressively seeking new ways to deliver to courses to students.

Northwestern has taken a leadership role in electronic delivery of classes as students are taking classes via the Internet, compressed video or desktop video. Twenty-five degree programs are available completely online and more may be added in the future.

Enrollment at Northwestern is more than 9,000 students. The university has more than 70,000 alumni in all 50 states and 12 countries.

Students come primarily from Louisiana.

Located in Natchitoches, the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, the university and community value history. Part of the university is entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The university is home to the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, a research division of the National Park Service which uses technology to serve the future of America's heritage through applied research and professional training.

Northwestern seeks to provide a well-rounded education for its students, allowing them to take part in a variety of extracurricular activities.

More than 100 chartered organizations are available to enhance what is learned in the classroom.

Sports Information

Assistant AD/Sports Information Director

In charge of athletic media relations at his alma mater since January of 1989, Doug Ireland coordinates publicity efforts for Northwestern's 14 intercollegiate sports teams through local, regional and national media outlets in print, broadcast, television and the internet.

He also serves in the volunteer role of chairman of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Ireland assumed that post in April 1991.

His 1992 Demon Football Media Guide won "Best in the Nation" in FCS Division from the College Sports Information Directors of America. A 1997 story on Joe Delaney, "The Guy We Called Joe D," won a national second-place award in a COSIDA writing contest.

Ireland has won numerous awards as SID from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He was recently awarded the Distinguished American Award� by the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Several of his assistant SIDs and graduate assistants have advanced to prominence in media fields. Former NSU sports information staffers under Ireland include Bruce Ludlow, assistant commissioner of the Southland Conference for media relations; Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Mike Morrison, co-editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and business manager at Lamar; Erik Cox, SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud, former assistant SID at LSU; Kenny Lannou, SID at Kansas State; and Troy Mitchell, SID at Henderson State. Dustin Eubanks, NSU's director of NCAA compliance, worked in the NSU SID office as a graduate assistant and for two years as the fulltime assistant. And Adam Jonson, NSU’s ticket manager, was a student and graduate assistant in the SID office. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men's basketball program that made three straight postseason tournament appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers' Association.

In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contributions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university's group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural University Planning Council in 1997-99.

A member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a student government senator while completing a journalism degree from Northwestern, Ireland was editor of the student newspaper "Current Sauce" as a sophomore before going to work for the Shreveport Times. He was an all-district baseball player and the student body president at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where he was a wingback for the Tigers' 1977 Class AA state football finalists coached

by Don Shows.

Associate Sports Information Director

Matthew Bonnette is beginning his eighth season as a member of the NSU sports information staff.

Bonnette joined the staff in August 2003 after spending a year as sports information director at Henderson State (Ark.) and for former NSU legendary coach Sam Goodwin.

Bonnette surpervises all layouts and design work for all media guides and game programs and is the primary media contact for the NSU baseball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

A 2002 graduate of McNeese State University, Bonnette is no stranger to the SID field as he is the son of longtime McNeese SID Louis Bonnette, who is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame, Southland Conference Hall of Honor, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the McNeese State Athletic Hall of Fame. Matthew's older brother, Michael, is the sports information director at LSU. While at McNeese, Bonnette served two years as the sports editor of the school’s newspaper. He also worked as both a volunteer and student sports information director while being employed at KPLC-TV as the commercial production manager where he won several advertising awards for his work.

He is a member of CoSIDA, Louisiana Sports Writers Association, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and the United State Basketball Wristers Association. He has been a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee the last two years and directed the voting for the All-Louisiana Women’s Basketball and Baseball teams. His 2009 football media guide placed first in its division in the LSWA sports information directors contest while his baseball media guide placed second in its respective division. He has won eight awards by the LSWA in his career.

He is married to the former Colene Lanier of Lake Charles and the couple has two daughters, 10-year-old Haley, who is a fifth grader, and Katelyn, who is in the first grade and will turn seven in November. Both children attend the NSU Elementary Lab School. Colene is the Northwestern State men’s basketball and women’s soccer administrative assistant.

New leadership brings new attitude for ‘10 season A new era for Northwestern State volleyball gets underway this weekend when the Lady Demons, under the direction of new co-head coaches Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman, takes part in the Arkansas State Volleyball Classic beginning with Friday matches against Louisiana Tech and the host Red Wolves.

After enduring a 3-21 record last season, NSU returns eight letterwinners and five starters while six newcomers join the team to provide added talent and depth.

“We're in a learning mode right now, so there is a lot of teaching going on,” said Hugh Hernesman. “But I really feel like things are going well.

“A coach that I have always admired once said that competition was a time to sit back and evaluate how effective your training has been and what direction you need to go for the coming weeks. There will obviously be teaching moments and opportunities to adjust our tactics early on. But without a real opportunity to scout our opponents and prepare like we will the rest of the season, we're going to have to make it work on the fly at times. We also believe that we've got a number of combinations and versatility in our lineups, so I believe that there will be an opportunity to see different combinations together as well as people in different roles.”

The following is a list of position breakdowns for this year's Lady Demon squad.

Outside Hitter -- Senior Taylor Deering returns to this spot where she played in 18 matches last season and knocked down 48 kills and had 29 digs. She'll be expected to be the team's best on the outside but will need to overcome some injuries. Junior Megan Manning and 10

sophomore Nicole Hajka also return from last season. Manning started in all 24 matches and was fifth on the team with 94 kills while ranking second with 240 digs. Hajka was fourth on the squad with 78 kills last season in 22 matches played. Newcomers Kourtney Adams and Jessica Guttierrez should battle for some playing time.

Middle Blocker -- Laranda Spann and Sarah Jones, two of the top three hitters returning from last year's team, returns and will be joined by junior returner Brittany Fruge and newcomer Holly Moreno. Spann, who will be a senior this year, ranked second in kills last year with 183 and a 2.10 kills per game average. She was also third on the team with a .157 hitting percentage and second with 58 blocks. Jones, a sophomore this year, ranked third on www.nsudemons.com

the team with 122 kills and a 1.40 per game average. She was third with a .130 hitting percentage and 42 total blocks. Fruge added 46 kills and 10 service aces in 21 matches played while Moreno, a junior college transfer, should see a siginificant amount of playing time.

Opposite/Right-Side -- Fruge seems to be the top choice at this spot due to her ability to hit multiple tempo sets.

Other options for the position will be Spann, Deering, and Guttierrez.

Libero -- Returning starter Zanny Castillo was injured on the first day of preseason practices and could miss some time. That will leave the libero position up for grabs among several players, including, who was second on the team with 208 digs and returning Great Tradition • Brighter Future

The newcomers of Sarah Gillis, Lexi Colvin, and Guttierrez are other options as Gillis could be the one to push for the starting position while Guttierrez could be the dark horse of the group.

Setter -- NSU lost one of its all-time greatest setters when Megan Dockery graduated last year. That leaves the position wide open between Peltier, who was second on the team last year with 114 set assists, and newcomer Lauren Joyner. Joyner had an outstanding club season and could be the front-runner to be the opening day starter.

“We've had quite a few highlights from camp so far,” said Hernesman. “I feel as though the group is really continuing to grow as they did the past spring. If I were to point out some individuals that have done it on a consistent basis so far, I would say that Kourtney Adams has probably raised her stock the most. another returner that has made quite an impression. Her strength has always been her athletic ability, but she is soaking up our system and her offensive game is improving almost by the practice.

Lastly, I would say that Brittany Fruge has also left a great impression on the staff. She came into camp in great shape and that has helped a lot; but on top of that, she's been someone that has stepped into the offensive void created with the graduation of Yelena Enwere. We've got to find a way to replace all of those kills and I think that these three in particular have shown that they are up to the task.

“We're real excited with the newcomers and their ability to contribute right away. Sarah Gillis has made a real impression. She's got a real natural touch and the things that I saw out of her this past club season are showing up in our gym. I think our fans will enjoy watching her play, as she's got a real knack for the spectacular play.

“Jessica Guttierrez has also done a great job so far. Pretty much every team has the one 'run through a brick wall' type of player. That is Jess for us.

But on top of that, she's a skilled defender and smart hitter. I believe that those qualities put her into the mix as both a libero/defensive specialist and an outside hitter.

“Lauren Joyner battled a minor knee injury early in camp, but has also let a good impression. She is a natural at the setting position as well as a player with strengths in other areas besides setting.”

The Lady Demons will start the season with 13 matches on the road before the Sept. 23 home opener against Stephen F. Austin.

NSU will play in the Samford Invitational on Sept. 3-4 againg the host team, Tennessee Tech, Syracuse and North Texas. Following that, NSU will www.nsudemons.com

play at the McNeese State Invitational on Sept. 10-11 and will go up against Prairie View, Louisiana-Monroe and UNO. The next weeked puts NSU in Conway, Arkansas to take part in the UCA Sugar Bear Classic against UCA (a conference match), Jackson State and Memphis.

Husband-wife combo of Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman named new leaders of NSU volleyball Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman come to Northwestern State after serving the last three years on the staff of Ball State University of the Mid-American Conference - Hugh as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Cardinals and Stephanie as a volunteer assistant.

"Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman bring a combined level of maturity, experience, and knowledge which will be very beneficial to our volleyball student-athletes and to the proHugh Hernesman gram, in general," said NSU Director of Athletics Greg Stephanie Hernesman Burke. 2005 and 2006 seasons, coached two ASC West Division Players of the Year, two league newcomers of the year, 10 ASC All-Conference selections, and a first team Academic All-American.

He also guided his team to the 2006 ASC tournament championship and the program's first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. His 2005 team won the ASC West Division title and was an ASC tournament runner-up. His program won the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 200405 sports calendar year.

"I think very highly of both Hugh and Stephanie," said John Neese, Director of Athletics at Hardin-Simmons.

"Hugh is very well organized and knows where to look for recruits. He has a quiet intensity which makes him successful. Stephanie is very driven and also brings tremendous organizational skills. She related very well to our players.

In fact, when the Hernesmans left for Ball State, the great relationship that they had developed with our players made their departure especially difficult."

"They (the Hernesmans) turned Hardin-Simmons around mainly because of a tireless work ethic.....technically, they know their stuff," said Julie Jenkins, 25-year head coach at Trinity University and a Division III rival.

and helped coach the 2008 and 2009 teams to the MidAmerican Conference Tournament, where the Cardinals lost to the eventual champions both seasons.

In two years, they coached two All-MAC performers as well as developed two players that were named to the 2008 All-MAC Freshman team. They also were a major factor in boasting Ball State's RPI from No. 254 in their first season in 2007, to No. 152 this past year.

Hugh began his collegiate coaching career at WisconsinWhitewater in 1995 and helped guide the Warhawks to nine consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including four Final Four appearances (1995, 2000, 2001, 2002) and the 2002 National Championship.

His teams won six WIAC Conference titles and posted a 305-45 won-loss record. He also developed and coached eight AVCA All-Americans, including the 2002 National Player of the Year, 10 AVCA All-Region players, and 14 WIAC All-Conference athletes.

Stephanie was a three-time AVCA All-American and AllRegion honors as a player at Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1995-98. She was the team MVP in 1995, '97, and '98 and earned NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team honors in 1995.

During her playing days, she helped guide Whitewater to three conference championships ('96, '97, '98) and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Her 1995 team finished third in the nation.

Her teams posted a combined record of 134-21 for an 86.5 winning percentage. She was also co-captain of her 1997 and 1998 teams.

In addition to her coaching assistance at Whitewater, Hardin-Simmons, and Ball State, Stephanie also assisted the men's volleyball team at Whitewater from 1999-2003; was the USAV Junior Tournament Director from 2001-04; was head coach of the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club from 2002-04 where her 2003 team placed second at the Junior Olympics; was the camp instructor for the USA Volleyball High Performance Program in 2003 and 2005; and was the founder and director of the West Texas Heat Volleyball Club from 2004-07.

Said Stephanie: "We feel fortunate to have learned the lessons of successfully rebuilding programs and feel that NSU has the pieces in place that will allow this sort of program transformation as well. It will take a lot of work from the staff, the support staff and the current players, but it can be done. We've been through the highs and lows and understand what it takes - hard work in the gym and in the classroom, a detail-oriented recruiting plan and a tactical system to go along with solid opponent scouting."

Elaina Kakatolis Graduate Assistant Coach 1st season at NSU Ball State, 2010

Northwestern State co-head volleyball coaches Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman have announced the services of Elaina Kakatolis who will be helping out as a graduate assistant for the Lady Demons this season.

Kakatolis comes to NSU after lettering four years in volleyball at Ball State where she earned her bachelor's degree in accounting this past May. As a player at Ball State, Kakatolis ended her career ranked 14th in the program history with 2,203 attempts; finished as one of the top blockers in program history, ranking 16th in block assists (227) and 18th in career total blocks (249); and her 127 sets played in 2008 tie as the 17th-best single-season total in the program.

"Adding Elaina to our staff is going to be huge for our program," commented Hugh Hernesman. "For all three years that we were together at Ball State, Elaina was a leader and captain for the team. Her teammates gravitated to her and she has a nice, easy calm about her. As a three-year starter, Elaina's experience of playing within our unique systems of play is going make her a great resource for our players. The bottom line is that we are adding another coach that knows what we do as well as we do, that will step right in without any sort of learning curve. On top of that, Elaina is a very organized and responsible individual, which will be invaluable to the day-to-day operations of the program."

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to continue my education and to be a graduate assistant for the NSU volleyball program and the Hernesmans," said Kakatolis. "I have played for them the past three seasons and am very happy to spend the next couple of years working with them and NSU." As a high school player at Franklin Monroe in Ohio, Kakatolis helped guide her team to a 16-7 record her senior year and a 63-26 mark over her career. She led her team to three sectional runner-up finishes and a pair of conference championships and was the conference player of the year as a senior. She tallied a school-record 298 kills as a senior to go along with a .443 attack percentage while recording 100 blocks and 125 digs.

She was named all-area first team her final two seasons as well as first team all-district. She was also a three-time first team all-cross country selection.

Born on Sept. 1, 1986 in Greenville, Ohio, Kakatolis is the daughter of Peter and Susan Kakatolis and has one sister, Kaitlyn.

Leslie Oglesby Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Alabama, 2010 Leslie Oglesby is in his first season as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Lady Demon volleyball team.

A native of Reform, Alabama and a graduate of South Lamar High School, Oglesby graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Alabama in May 2010.

While at Alabama, he worked with the Crimson Tide baseball, football, and women’s basketball teams as well as area high school athletics at Tuscaloosa County High School. In the summer of 2009, he did an athletic training internship with the Xenia Scouts of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball League.

At NSU, he’ll work on getting his master’s degree in science and health promotion.

Born on February 21, 1988, Leslie is the son of Jeff and Donna Oglesby and he has an older brother, Joey. Leslie is also engaged to be married to Anna-Kate Sisson with the date set for June 11, 2011.

University Administration Dr. Randall J. Webb Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State University’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after more than 14 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal.

Under his leadership, Northwestern became the first public college or university in Louisiana to achieve 100 percent national accreditation of all eligible academic programs.

Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as president and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004.

Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the university toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater academic potential and aptitude.

Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the university.

External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its founding in 1884.

Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video.

Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East and West Caspari Halls, and replace the underground electrical distribution system.

Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament.

A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education, Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from

NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research.

Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, VA, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful Freshman Connection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church.

Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwestern. Tamara and her husband, former NSU All-America baseball pitcher Reggie Gatewood, live in McKinney, Texas, with their children Tyler and Ava. Lauren is married to former outstanding NSU baseball player Nick Simokaitis, and they live in St. Louis with their sons Nicholas and Benjamin.

Jerry Pierce Vice President/External Affairs Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player.

Beginning his 46th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year.

Cathy Sutton A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for the Demon football team during his college years, working Ex-Officio Me m b e r s closely with legendary coach Jack Clayton. He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958. He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him to step aside from the volunteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana's higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the Journalism Department faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thousands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and magazines.

Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and Amanda, 21, and Miranda, 10, and two stepchildren, Nicholas and Natalie.

Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions.

Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball's Mike McConathy and soccer's Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since. NSU's 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63.

Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State.

From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women's athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament.

Volleyball set attendance records and made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation's most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women's tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance.

Athletic Administration Jody Biscoe Faculty Athletic Representative Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council.

Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties.

NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference.

Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration.

Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center's (ATTC) Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recognized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee. This past year, Jody was selected to serve on the United States Health and Human Services – Substance Abuse & Mental Health Service Administration Expert Panel concerning workforce issues.

Jody's wife, Veronica (Roni), is an avid runner. Their 16-year-old daughter, Roxy, is a junior on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary's High School. All are devoted Demon fans!

Dr. William Broussard Executive Director - NSU Athletic Association Associate AD for External Relations One of the most accomplished student-athletes ever at Northwestern State (see page 97), two-time football All-America center William Broussard returned to his alma mater in February 2007 as the Director of External Relations, coordinating fundraising activities through the Athletic Association and Demon Victory Fund.

Known for his avid and tireless promotion of NSU Athletics, Broussard has represented the department as Associate Athletic Director of External Relations since 2007 and planned or helped organize hundreds of events to promote Demon Athletics.

After re-branding the annual fund campaign the Demon Victory Fund (DVF) in 2007, the DVF enjoyed its most successful year up to that point. The 2008-09 DVF once again broke the annual record for total revenues, number of Athletic Association members, and Select 100 Members on the way to establishing a new benchmark for annual, unrestricted support of the NSU Athletic Department. Under Broussard’s guidance, the NSU Athletic Association has set four consecutive annual total attainment records, secured the largest scholarship endowment and largest planned gift in the history of NSU Athletics.

In the 2009-10 year, the NSU Athletic Association established or tied several annual records under Broussard’s guidance, including annual records for total operating revenues, gift-in-kind donations, number of commitments to the Endowed Scholarship Program (9), and number of Select 100 members (197). Broussard also assisted in raising more than $100,000 in support for renovations to the Athletic Field House.

Broussard represents Northwestern State as the Southland Conference representative of the National Association of Athletic Directors of Development (NAADD) and is also an Assistant Professor of Journalism at NSU. He is the author of essays and articles on the culture of college athletics and writes a bi-weekly sports editorial for local news magazine The Real Views. He is also the 2010 president of the Natchitoches Lions Club.

Broussard is a 2000 graduate, with distinction, of the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University and a 2007 graduate of the University of Arizona, with his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition. A native of Crowley, he is married to the former Kendra Peters, a Lady Demon volleyball player during the couple’s days at Northwestern.

Alex Cook Assistant Marketing Director Lafayette native Alex Cook is in his second year as assistant marketing director for NSU athletics, joining the staff in late August of 2009.

From his hiring until January, Cook performed duties of both marketing positions before the hiring of Jason Horn.

Before joining NSU, Cook handled sponsorship sales, administrative duties and promo-

tional activities for the 2009 Hall of Fame Induction Celebration featuring NFL greats Will Roaf and Marshall Faulk, golfer Hal Sutton, and women’s basketball coaching legend Sonja Hogg. He arrived in Natchitoches in April of 2009 after graduating the previoius month from Eastern Oregon University, earning a business administration degree with a concentration in marketing and a minor in economics.

He was three-year letterman as a wide receiver on the EOU football team. Cook became the first student invited to serve on the university’s marketing committee and also provided assistance to the director of athletics. While in school, Cook also worked as a sales representative for NXGEN Payment Services, a national e-commerce firm affiliated with many athletics departments, governmental agencies and other entities. He also was an account consultant for Next Step Consulting in his hometown of Boise, Idaho, and was a marketing intern for the 2007 Cascade Collegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by EOU in LaGrande.

An Eagle Scout, Cook is a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America National Heroism Award for Lifesaving. He was a football, basketball and track letterman at Centennial High School in Boise. Born Nov. 15, 1984 in Lafayette, where his father was serving as head women’s basketball coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, Cook is the son of Ross and Sheila Cook of Boise. His mother served as the management consultant to NSU Athletics to establish the Scholarship Auction in 1989 before the family relocated to Boise. He has a sister, Megan, who is a recent graduate of Oregon State now employed in marine biological research and preservation activities based in Hawaii.

Carrie Crowell Assistant Academic Advisor Carrie Crowell, a two-year Academic All-Southland Conference soccer standout for Northwestern State in 2005-06, from Arlington, TX, now serves as an academic coordinator in the Johnnie Emmons Athletic Study Center at NSU. Crowell served as an intern in the Academic Services and CHAMPS/Life Skills program in January 2009, while also completing her second season as a graduate assistant soccer coach and finishing work on her master's of science in sport administration.

She was a magna cum laude graduate of NSU in August 2007 in business administration, and also was a key contributor on the Lady Demons' 2005 NCAA Tournament team that won the Southland Conference Tournament.

Crowell is the academic coordinator for the sports of soccer, women's basketball, men's and women's track, volleyball, and freshman football. She also heads the Enhanced Academic Program which provides additional help for student-athletes and aids in maintaining a healthy and successful balance between academics and athletics.

Crowell served an internship in the summer of 2008 with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, helping stage events supporting a Nationwide Tour golf tournament co-sponsored by the Hall. She also assisted in daily operations of the museum in Springfield, Mo., and helped stage the Missouri High School Basketball All-Stars Game.

Crowell was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honors society from 2005-2007, graduating in three years with a 3.74 grade point average. She made the SLC Commissioners' Academic Honor Roll in the last three seasons she competed for NSU, capped by a 2006 season in which her defense helped the Lady Demons set a school record for least goals allowed per game. Crowell graduated with her Masters of Science in Sport Administration with a 4.0 GPA in May 2009.

Dustin Eubanks is in his 13th year in the NSU athletic department and his ninth year at

Dustin Eubanks Assistant AD/NCAA Compliance Director the helm of the compliance duties, keeping all athletic personnel current and in accordance with NCAA and Southland Conference guidelines.

A 1996 education graduate of Northwestern, the 35-year-old avid fan of all teams that hail from Pittsburgh seized an opportunity to serve as a graduate assistant in the sports information department at Northwestern while beginning the pursuit of his master’s degree in health and physical education (concentration in sports administration), which he obtained in May of 2003, and was impressive enough to earn a promotion to full-time status in November 1998.

Eubanks is married to the former Dawn Hornsby of Branch and the couple has two daughters, Emilie (15) and Taylor Nicole (4). The sisters share the same birthdate.

Dustin and Dawn, who is the Associate Director of Financial Aid at NSU, will celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary this summer.

Roxanne Freeman Athletic Business Manager Roxanne Freeman began working at NSU in 1983 as an accounting clerk in business affairs. She transferred to the athletic department as football/baseball/track secretary and served under Sam Goodwin, Leon Johnson and several baseball coaches for eight seasons before graduating with a B.S. in accounting in May 1995.

Freeman then became the compliance coordinator and academic advisor during a three-year span before leaving in 1998.

She returned to NSU in the Fall of 2000 in her current position as Business Manager where she now serves as liaison between the athletic department and business affairs. She has one son, Aaron Pizani, who recently graduated from NSU.

Athletic Administration Jodie Heinicka Senior Woman Administrator/Academic Coordinator Jodie Heinicka, a nationally-ranked gymnast at Missouri and an acclaimed scholar-athlete before beginning her career in academic support and athletic administration, is the Senior Woman Administrator and Academic Coordinator for Northwestern State athletics.

Heinicka manages academic support activities for more than 300 Northwestern studentathletes, who utilize dozens of computer terminals and study carrels that are among the facilities available in the Johnnie Emmons Academic Support Center in the NSU Athletic Fieldhouse.

During her first year as a Demon, Heinicka was able to make steady progress to increase the services offered to NSU student-athletes. With an additional academic coordinator position filled, the athletic academic services sport responsibilities were divided between two coordinators, allowing for more personalized attention to each sport.

Additionally, the CHAMPS/Life Skills program was ramped up to provide a strong focus on personal and career development by offering career assessments, résumé-writing consultations, and mock interviews as well as monthly workshops covering areas such as personal finances, leadership, nutrition, and professional development. As a unique part of the CHAMPS program, Heinicka also introduced the first ever Etiquette Dinner; a four-course meal at which student-athletes were taught dining etiquette and given the opportunity to interact with fellow student-athletes and local business professionals in a formal setting. In spring 2009, Heinicka was honored as the NSU “Advisor of the Year” for her overall success with these programs.

When she was named the 2006 Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year, it was the first time a Missouri student-athlete earned the honor. Heinicka was a three-time Academic AllBig 12 first team selection and was named a National Association of Gymnastics Coaches/Women Scholar Athlete in 2006. She was named the 2007 Women's Intersport Network Collegiate Sportswoman of the Year.

She was the recipient of the 2006 Prentice Gautt Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship Award and served as Mizzou's SAAC vice president in her senior year, 2005-06.

The Seminole, Fla., native earned a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in May 2006. She received a master's degree in Higher and Continuing Education from Missouri in May, 2008.

Jason Horn, whose extensive career in athletic marketing, events and sales includes

Jason Horn Assistant AD/Marketing and Promotions positions working with the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, has joined Northwestern State as assistant athletics director.

A University of Michigan graduate, Horn has served on the collegiate level most recently at Central Florida and Bowling Green as assistant AD for marketing with previous stints as the director of marketing and promotions for Conference USA and on administrative staffs at Miami (Fla.) and Michigan.

A Detroit native, he also has extensive experience in professional sports, working as director of marketing and community relations for the NBA Developmental League's Mobile Revelers, the Detroit Pistons as an account executive for corporate sponsorships, and the New Haven County Cutters minor league baseball team. He has been a regional manager in Florida for the WPT Amateur Poker League.

From 1999-2001, he was sales and marketing manager for the Salt Lake City-based Winter Olympics, the Winter Paralympics and Team USA. He was part of a sales staff producing $850 million in revenue.

Working in 1995 and 1996 as ticket and sales manager for the Atlanta-based Summer Olympics, he assisted the vice president of operations with the development of the event operations plan for the Games, and designed and directed a comprehensive marketing and ticket sales plan for the Olympic soccer matches hosted at the famed Miami Orange Bowl.

In 1997-99 at Conference USA in the league's headquarters in Chicago, Horn oversaw C-USA's marketing plan including website redesign, championship marketing, merchandising, licensing and advertising programs.

In the NBA-D League in Mobile, he supervised five departments including marketing, community relations, ticket sales, event operations and media relations in 2001-02.

From 2005-06 at Bowling Green, he created and planned season and group ticket sales strategies that created a 40 percent increase in football season ticket revenue and an overall all-sports ticket revenue increase of 21 percent.

In 2006-08 for Central Florida, his marketing team's ticket sales strategies in 2006-07 led to a 21 percent spike in basketball attendance, 58 percent in baseball attendance and 32 percent for softball. In 2007 over 7,000 new football season tickets were sold, generating over $1.4 million in new revenue.

He currently resides in Natchitoches.

Adam Jonson Assistant Marketing Director for Ticket Operations Adam Jonson, a former graduate assistant in the Northwestern State sports information office and assistant SID at the University of North Florida, enters his second year as NSU's assistant marketing director for tickets operations.

Jonson completed his master's of science in sport administration at NSU with a 4.0 gpa in May of 2010 after earning his bachelor's of science in business administration as a

summa cum laude graduate of NSU in 2007.

For part of his graduate degree requirements, Jonson took a position as the assistant director of athletics media relations at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., where he spent 10 months before returning to NSU. He worked in a full-time position at UNF while completing his internship hours, working as the primary contact for Lady Osprey basketball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's tennis as well as leading the event management team for setup of most home athletic events.

In 2007, he was donned the prestigious Ace Higgins Award, given by the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association to the state's top student SID. His 2008 softball media guide also earned second place in the annual LSWA contest.

Jonson has also been very involved in the NSU Baptist Collegiate Ministry, playing drums for two years in the praise and worship band and taking an active role in intramural sports. He now serves as the BCM's faculty advisor for intramural sports and is a member of NSU's Intramural Sports Committee.

Through the NSU sports information office, Jonson has worked closely with the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, serving as Advertising Coordinator in 2006 and assisting with inductee signing activities and inductee hospitality for four years running. Jonson was also recently chosen as an ambassador for the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce.

The twenty-five-year-old was born in Natchitoches on July 17, 1985, and calls his parents residence of Winnsboro, La., home. His father Bill and mother Leigh both attended NSU, and his brother Fletcher graduated from NSU in May 2009 and is currently enrolled in graduate school at NSU. Fletcher also works in the sports information office. Adam enjoys traveling, working out and anything involving sports.

Alan Pasch Director of Athletic Facilities Alan Pasch joined the NSU athletic staff at the outset of 2008 although he’s been a prominent coach on campus since 2001. Pasch was head rowing coach for the club-level crew teams at NSU while he has also served as assistant intramural director.

Pasch, a former Dean’s List student at Northwestern while obtaining his bachelor of arts degree in 2001, picked up his master’s degree in sport administration in 2006 from NSU. The NSU Crew Team was competitive on the national level throughout Pasch’s tenure as head coach. He was varsity team captain from 1997-2000 and was crew oarsman of the year in 1997, 1998 and 2000.

Pasch also coordinated visits to Natchitoches by as many as 16 intercollegiate and club rowing teams each winter and spring, including nationally-ranked squads. He also served as director of the annual Natchitoches Marathon Rowing Championships which attracts up to 500 competitors each year.

His wife Yonna works in the student life office at Northwestern State. Pasch is also an avid tennis player. The couple has a 1-year old son, Amsden.

Rocky Smith Assistant Director of Special Facilities for Events Operations Rocky Smith is in his first year as teh assistant director for athletic facilities and game operations at NSU. Smith began his career as a student worker for Alan Pasch and the department, then moved up as a graduate assistant.

His duties will include providing a safe, functional facility while serving as the game manager for NSU soccer, volleyball, and baseball events while assisting with the other athletic sports.

A native of Bedford, Texas and a graduate of Trinity High School, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies at NSU and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sport administration. At Trinity, he competed on the gymnastics team and took part in both state and national meets in the ring, pommel horse, and parallel bars. In 2002, he was part of the High School National Gymnastics.

As an undergrad student, he was a member of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a bass trombonist.

Born March 9, 1986, Rocky is the son of David and Robbie Smith and has a younger sister, Delayne. He has competed in triathlons, criterium, and mountain races; was an assistant coach for the NSU Crew team; and competed in three rowing marathons in Natchitoches.

Mandy Wamsley Volleyball Administrative Assistant Mandy Wamsley has served as the administrative assistant for Lady Demon volleyball and women’s athletics for 22 years, joining the team in July of 1987.

A 1985 graduate of Campti High School, Wamsley earned a degree from the Natchitoches Technical Institute in October 1986.

A member of Ashland Baptist Church, Wamsley, and her husband Troy, will celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary thisfall.

During her free time, Wamsley enjoys reading and cooking and a little bit of cross stitching.

Now in his 22nd season directing the Eugene Christmas Sports Medicine Center at Northwestern State and 29th year in the profession, Ed Evans has earned the respect of his peers, along with honors from Northwestern State’s athletic letterwinners and the Louisiana governor’s office for his contributions to the field of sports medicine and athletic training in general and to Northwestern State in particular.

Evans was presented honorary membership in the Graduate N Club, the association of athletic letterwinners at Northwestern State, during 2005 homecoming ceremonies. Only four other individuals have received such an honor from the N Club, which paid tribute to Evans’ dedicated, unselfish service in four decades (counting his time as a graduate student) to student-athletes at NSU. In 2004, Evans was named the regional “College Athletic Trainer of the Year” by the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association, which includes members who are in the profession in seven states from Louisiana to Georgia and Kentucky.

Evans served six years as president of the Louisiana Athletic Trainers’ Association and six more as secretary/treasurer. He was enshrined in the LATA Hall of Fame in 2000.

Evans is a member of the Advisory Committee on Athletic Training to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. He also serves on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness, appointed early in 2000 by then Gov. Mike Foster.

Evans worked as a graduate assistant at Northwestern from 1979-82. He earned his masters degree in physical education (1980) and completed 30 hours beyond the master’s with an emphasis in guidance and counseling.

Evans served four years in the U.S Navy as a hospital corpsman and physical/occupational therapy technician. He spent seven years as athletic trainer at Natchitoches Central High School, working the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s All-Star games two years, before joining the Northwestern staff.

He and his wife Chris have three sons, Jonathan, David and Tim. An avid cyclist, he generates donations for the training room in an annual spring bike-a-thon.

Dr. James Knecht 30

Jason Drury joined the sports medicine staff at Northwestern State University in the summer of 2005. Drury came to NSU from Natchitoches Central High School where he was the head athletic trainer for five years. In the spring of 2009, Drury took over as the head football athletic trainer for the Demons, after working for three seasons with the women's soccer team and one season with men's basketball team.

A 1999 graduate of Idaho State University in biology, Drury worked with numerous sports in Pocatello, Idaho including football, men's basketball and track and field. Drury earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Northwestern State in 2001, during which time he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the NSU softball team.

Drury is a native of Paoli, Indiana. He and his wife, Toni, have been married for seven years. They have two children, Maddox and Kenzie.

David Berkeley-Tuchmayer Assistant Athletic Trainer Appalachian State, 2006 4th Season at NSU David Berkeley-Tuchmayer begins his fourth season on the NSU athletic training staff and first as an assistant trainer.

Berkeley-Tuchmayer, a native of Wilmington, N.C., and a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State, is the son of Harry Tuchmayer and Kathleen Berkeley. He has one brother, Jeremy (29).

Berkeley-Tuchmayer received his master’s degree in sports administration last spring.

2010 PRESEASON FIRST TEAM

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization.

The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage.

In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos.

All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington).

The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport.

The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, and volleyball.Southland Conference football ranks among the best Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the league joined FCS in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 89 Division I playoff games in 27 years, winning 42 of the contests.
